Marketplace / Help me clear some space!
« on: August 15, 2015, 06:21:35 pm »
I've amassed a fair number of duplicates and other unnecessary bits, and have finally decided it's time to gut some of that so I can free up space for new goodies. Figured I'd offer a few things up to the VGC community, though a lot of things won't be too compelling.

All items are CIB unless otherwise noted, and any associated DLC cards have been redeemed. Black label/original releases only. I'm open to cash or trade, but for trades, mainly looking for stuff off my PS1, PS2, and GC wishlists.

Due to my work schedule, it's likely that I'll only be able to ship on weekends, but will try and coordinate with my roommate to send things more quickly when possible.

Site Feedback / Add PlayStation 4 Asia/China Platform?
« on: August 03, 2015, 01:21:31 am »
I'm thinking this may have just been an oversight, but it'd be great to see PlayStation 4 [CN] added as a platform option. Can't add my copy of DMC4: SE!

Classic Video Games / Best of the worst JRPGs/SRPGs?
« on: October 23, 2014, 02:10:17 pm »
So I've been cutting some things off my wishlist lately in an attempt to focus more on quality over quantity, but I'm finding it a little difficult to trim down some of them. Deep down, I know I could probably skip all of these... but you never know!

Anyone have thoughts on the following?
- Arc Rise Fantasia [Wii]
- Avalon Code [NDS]
- Baroque [Wii]
- Black Sigil: Blade of the Exiled [NDS]
- Blazing Souls Accelate [PSP]
- Brigandine: Legend of Forsena [PS1]
- CIMA: The Enemy [GBA]
- Legasista [PSP]
- Mana Khemia: Student Alliance [PSP]
- Mimana Iyar Chronicle [PSP]
- Monster Kingdom: Jewel Summoner [PSP]
- Mystic Chronicle [PSP]
- Pier Solar [Misc]
- Rainbow Moon [PS3]
- Shining Tears [PS2]
- Spectral Force Genesis [NDS]
- Unchained Blades [PSP]
- Vandal Hearts I & II [PS1]

I'm also curious if any of Compile Heart or Idea Factory's games are remotely worthwhile. Mugen Souls seems kind of weirdly... interesting, but stupid?

Any feedback would be useful!

Site Feedback / Refining PC gaming categories
« on: December 04, 2013, 12:43:06 am »
I've gotten way more into Steam, GOG, and other digital sources for PC gaming over the past year, but I'm seeing some things that I'm wondering if there's any consensus on.

Uplay, Origin, and Steam are really the main digital delivery platforms, with GOG being considered distinct for being explicitly DRM-free and heaping on unique extras, and everything else is basically a generic download of the exe with serial or other forms of protection. Is there any consideration for maybe splitting off Uplay, Origin, and GOG-based games into their own categories instead of just dumping it all under digital downloads?

For instance, it'd be great to see PC games look like:

PC >
  PC - Digital Download
  PC - GOG
  PC - Origin
  PC - Steam
  PC - Uplay

Classic Video Games / Consolized MVS Solutions?
« on: November 21, 2013, 03:57:31 pm »
This might be a question best directed to Kimimi, but after seeing recent prices just on Neo-Geo AES consoles (not to mention the games), I'm thinking an MVS is probably going to be the way I go for my Neo needs. The Phantom-1 + AES setup used to seem pretty reasonable, but prices have absolutely skyrocketed on both in recent years.

Does anyone have suggestions for what's needed for a consolized MVS? I know someone on neo-geo.com does them, but I'd like to avoid that crowd if possible, especially if it's something I can do myself.

I'm mainly looking to snag JP editions if possible, for what it's worth, though I seem to recall reading that the region can easily be changed in BIOS and make the US censorship stuff a non-issue.

Site Feedback / Reproduction carts
« on: November 06, 2013, 01:00:39 am »
I seem to run into a slew of these every time I dig around old console games on the site, but I'm wondering what the official stance is on things like repro carts? To my thinking, they're in the same camp as things like downloaded ROMs, burned Dreamcast games, fake Neo-Geo carts passed off as the real thing, etc. and so they shouldn't be here, but I feel like this may have come up once before and people were in favor of listing them.

Modern Video Games / The popping of the indie bubble
« on: November 05, 2013, 10:47:34 pm »
So I was checking Twitter on my way home from work, as I often do, and some had posted a link to a blog post by Jeff Vogel, whose company develops games like Avadon: The Black Fortress.

It basically boils down to the idea that the craze over indie games will die down, and developers need to adjust both their approach and expectations accordingly. This conclusion seems like fairly common sense to me; the market is oversaturated, except instead of games being shoveled out by the truckload by publishers, we now have guys in their bedrooms with delusions of being "deep" and being "beyond typical game experiences" contributing to the problem.

I brought this up on Facebook though, and one of my friends seems to think indie games guarantee experiences that couldn't possibly come from any sort of codified company, let alone those with an SEC filing. I suggested that it's pretty peculiar that a company like Thatgamecompany is considered "indie" while one like Nippon Ichi is not, despite the strong probability that NIS probably has a much more difficult time securing funding, as evidenced by their not too distant financial struggles.

My own stance is that there are games worth playing, and games not worth playing, regardless of their development model, and the indie "scene" needs to start being held to the same standards we apply to games released by larger publishers. Far too many indie games fall short in almost every respect, but are given a pass or overwhelmingly praised because they're pretty good "for an indie game" but would be considered absolute shit if that safety net were eliminated.

Off Topic / Goblin
« on: October 20, 2013, 04:24:47 pm »
So, I'm not sure how many of you are big horror film fans, particularly giallo films from folks like Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci...

BUT I SAW FREAKING GOBLIN PLAY LAST NIGHT!!!!11

Seriously amazing. Massimo and Claudio are the only old dudes still in the band, but they're also the core people, and everyone sounded absolutely amazing and seemed to be having a lot of fun. This is their first tour in the US ever, and as far as I know, every single show has been completely sold out, which is really gratifying to see, considering they could've easily been playing to empty houses with a handful of socially awkward horror geeks milling around instead.

I think they're in SF next, buuuut I have a feeling it's been sold out for months, same as Portland was :)

Oh, and I picked up a hella sweet shirt, so here is a picture of my torso:

Site Feedback / Character encoding
« on: October 19, 2013, 07:17:42 pm »
I'm not sure if I've mentioned this before, but are there any plans to address wonky character encoding when a game has accented characters? Games like Okami, Fausette Amour, and Wachenroder all technically have them in their titles, but if you try to enter those in, you wind up with gibberish like "Fausseté Amour" and "Wachenröder" instead of what you've entered, even though stuff like umlauts should be pretty well-supported. I'm guessing the site forces standard Western encoding, but wouldn't UTF-8 make more sense?

Classic Video Games / Wild Arms?
« on: October 16, 2013, 11:32:10 pm »
Wild Arms is a series I've been curious about for awhile, but for some reason, I've yet to play even one of them. The general consensus seems to be that the first game (original release, not the remake) is the best one, but what do you guys think of the rest of the series, especially 3, 4, and 5? Roughly speaking, are any of them on the level of other classic PS2 JRPGs like Shadow Hearts: Covenant and Persona 3?

Site Feedback / Most wanted list?
« on: October 08, 2013, 10:12:26 pm »
One thing I'm sure I'm not alone in is that my wishlist has gotten pretty huge over time. So much so that I've found myself needing to keep a list of Most Wanted games, to keep them on my immediate radar and try to focus on those rather than getting distracted by sales and what's easily available new.

What about having a sort of sub-list option for us to keep track of the games in our wishlist that we want to prioritize above all others? Something where we can isolate those titles away from the main wishlist without outright removing them from it.

Off Topic / Finances vs. collecting
« on: May 13, 2013, 11:29:49 am »
So I find myself at a bit of a crossroads lately - pay more per month to live alone, or continue on with the roommate thing, and have more money to burn.

I'll spare the endless backstory, and simply say that now that I'm inching closer to 33, my willingness to be around lazy alcoholics who spend every day smoking pot and pounding through a case of beer a night is basically 0 at this point. On the other hand, I'd be paying out $200-300 more for expenses per month, which means a considerably smaller budget for fun stuff.

Any advice or anecdotal experiences here? I'm mostly curious about who else has decided to live alone, and if you have any tips on keeping your money straightened out.

Edit: I feel the need to point out that I'm not some prudish conservative straight edge dood or anything. I love microbrews and good vodka, smoke cigarettes, hang around in dingy clubs once in awhile, and so on... but spending every single day completely hammered when you're over the age of 25 is just childish and stupid.

So I'm doing my morning coffee routine, and ran across a somewhat enlightening article about SMT4 on Siliconera. They didn't post video or anything, but nestled among some interesting answers about the story and mechanics, there are a couple particularly notable quotes:

"There will be paid DLC. Atlus say that it won’t make you feel as though they’re just trying to make money, and will be worthwhile content."

I'm... really not sure how I feel about this. Atlus has typically done well by its fans, and so I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt, but considering they're already indulging in retailer-exclusive pre-order costumes, it's hard to be optimistic about it.

A bit surprised to see that there's so much resistance to a female lead character in the series, too:

"The possibility of a future female lead wasn’t ruled out, although different development team members seemed to have different feeling towards the idea. Some welcomed the possibility of there being a choice of gender, while others felt that Shin Megami Tensei games are better suited to male leads."

Seems odd, considering that female characters have always struck me as fairly well-written.

General / The losing battle of physical vs. digital PC games
« on: March 31, 2013, 11:05:47 pm »
So I find myself at something of a crossroads with PC gaming: Do I shift to digital distribution only (mainly Steam and GOG), or doggedly stick to boxed releases?

I'm generally a die-hard advocate of having a physical product, but more often than not, I'm finding PC games are increasingly using services like Steam for authentication, which kind of defeats the purpose, and with older stuff, GOG seems to do a pretty great job of making things more stable on modern hardware. Toss in factors like DLC being a bit of a minefield of half-assed, uncertain distribution methods if it's released outside of a cohesive service (I'm looking at you, BioWare), ease of install and re-install, ridiculously cheap sale prices, and multiple options for backup, and I'm starting to wonder if I'm just being needlessly stubborn.

Thoughts? Anyone else with a similar preference for physical releases that's made this switch, or considering it?

Modern Video Games / Ketsui: Kizuna Jigoku Tachi coming to PS3
« on: March 22, 2013, 10:33:35 am »
Mainstream news sites aren't picking up the news, because they suck, but yes, it's finally happening - a Cave shooter is FINALLY hitting PS3, and it's freaking Ketsui.

Japan-only so far, but unless Cave pushes for it, it should be region-free like everything else. I forsee a Play-Asia or AmiAmi pre-order in my future... even though I just bought it on 360 :)
