Site Feedback / Allow clearing of Developer/Publisher fields on edit page
« on: October 12, 2023, 04:25:55 pm »
Currently there's no way to clear an already-submitted developer/publisher and send it for mod approval, the mods have to go in and remove those fields manually. Please add a way for regular users to submit blank fields for these too.

General / Would you replace a Greatest Hits/Reprint game?
« on: September 11, 2023, 05:32:28 am »
Just curious what you all think about this. If you had a reprint version of one of your favorite games, like Greatest Hits/Platinum/Player's Choice/Nintendo Selects, would you consider replacing it with the original version? Or would that be too overkill? How high on the priority list would that be for you to do?

I have a bunch of games I really love but unfortunately they are Greatest Hits versions that I acquired when I was younger. I really hate seeing that red strip on my shelf because I can't decide how to organize them (separate them from the black labels or do the whole set alphabetically?). It's genuinely such an eyesore. I'm honestly considering selling them and getting black label copies instead.

Site Feedback / Changing digital games to Official Release
« on: July 01, 2023, 04:09:42 pm »
After the recent change to digital categories and release fields being hidden, it has become impossible to change the release type from "Official Release (Upcoming)" or "Unreleased (but official)" for games that have since been released. This data is not visible on the game pages, but is still viewable in Collection pages or in searches.

Here is a WIP list of games that need this field changed:
If you find any more, feel free to add them to this thread.

Site Feedback / Advanced Search suggestion + Linking Devs/Pubs
« on: June 21, 2023, 04:15:17 pm »
This is a two-step suggestion, so bear with me here. I noticed that you can select from all developers and publishers on the advanced search page, but you can't proceed with the search without entering text in the name field. If we could avoid entering in the name field to just search the database for companies, it would show every listing with that company selected. If this change was implemented, we could then have the developers and publishers hyperlinked to these advanced search query pages. The code for scanning for developers/publishers seems to be present already as evidenced by the advanced search working as intended right now, would it be possible to tweak the coding slightly to allow for this?

So if you were to click on Nintendo EAD on the Super Mario 3D World page, it would send you to the page that shows up when you would search Nintendo EAD in the Advanced Search.

Site Feedback / Release type field missing
« on: June 04, 2023, 11:53:59 am »
Trying to edit https://vgcollect.com/item/232129 to change the release type to Official Release since the game came out a few days ago, and I noticed that the release type field is missing on the edit screen and game page. Don't know if this is an intentional change or not.

Video Game Database Discussion / Epic Games now has a category!
« on: May 30, 2023, 01:26:57 pm »
Great week for PC collectors, the Epic Games Store now has a separate category under PC! The mods/admins who want to take credit for this change, please feel free, I just wanted to spread the news because I haven't seen it shared yet. I accidentally stumbled across the new category while scrolling through browse and that's the only reason I knew about it. ;D
  • All games currently marked "Epic Games" in the description field with no other categories are currently being merged into the new category.
  • Any games with "Epic Games" among other categories will probably have to get new listings under the new category.
Unfortunately the free dates have to be removed because they are no longer necessary, but if you are one that likes to use this information it will always be available under the history tab for games that had it in the past.

Please check your PC collections and make sure everything is accurate after this ongoing change. There may be some errors, as not every game has every release listed in the description field, but it will be a good start to cleaning out the massive PC - Digital category.

PS: Thank you mods!

For mobile games that have multiple download sources, how should we navigate this in making listings? For example, Fortnite has seen many different releases, first being an APK launcher download, then it was released on the Play Store from April to August 2020 which it was then delisted, then finally re-released as an APK and also ported to the Samsung Galaxy Store.

I believe the way we were doing it with the PC Digital category was one listing per game, I don't know if this is still the case but we could implement that with the mobile categories too. We could make one listing that combines all of the sources, or have one listing for each source. In the description field we could list what the source is with something such as "Released on the Google Play Store" for clarification's sake.

Just doing a quick skim of the Galaxy Store and I'm seeing a lot of overlap between it and the Play Store. My personal opinion would be to just have one listing per game so it doesn't become a total mess of duplicates. But then what about when you have games that were permanently delisted on one store and kept up on another...? Are collectors going to be picky about having only the "rare" delisted version in their collection? What do you think should be done?

How should we go about adding games that have been removed from the Google Play Store or App Store?

As far as I understand, once a game has been removed from the store, it can't be redownloaded if it's then deleted off of your phone, but they should still be tied to your account I think (can someone confirm this please?). Technically you could still have them in your digital collection. Should they even have entries at all? There are a lot of huge games that've been taken down over the years like the original Angry Birds, Flappy Bird, and Fortnite that I'm looking to add entries for.

Similar question for online-only games that have reached end of service, such as Pokemon Duel and others that I can't recall at the moment, which you cannot redownload OR play if it's installed on your phone. Should these be added to the database?

Site Feedback / New genre suggestions
« on: May 27, 2023, 10:18:37 am »
Here are some genre suggestions I found that could fit well into the existing genre field. They are slightly more specific than what we have right now, similar to the FPS and TPS/Action-RPG, etc options that were added a few years ago.
  • RTS (Real-time strategy)
  • MOBA (Multiplayer online battle arena)
  • Card game
  • Battle royale
  • 2D Platformer/3D Platformer
  • 2D Fighting/3D Fighting
  • Sandbox (For games like Minecraft, Terraria, etc)
  • Turn-based Strategy
  • Hack and Slash (this one is the least necessary, imo. Most hack and slashes would fit as one of the action genres.)
  • Virtual Life (for games like The Sims, Animal Crossing, etc.)
Possibly some others, will edit this post when I come across them while making new entries.

Video Game Database Discussion / Pokemon Mystery Gift Cards
« on: October 28, 2022, 07:27:01 am »
I have been amassing a small collection of Pokemon code cards since around 2016 or so. For anyone unfamiliar with what these are, you take a trip to GameStop or another store during a limited time period and get one for free from the register. It's a one-time use code for a rare Pokemon. Do these have a place in the database? I was thinking maybe they could go in Swag - Retail Code Cards but those are a bit different than what I'd be trying to list, since you have to pay for those, they give an entire game or subscription, and they're usually not just a flimsy piece of crappy cardstock paper like the Pokemon codes are.

Video Game Database Discussion / Controller naming conventions
« on: October 18, 2022, 09:42:17 pm »
I've been working on editing the DualShock 3 series of controllers for a couple days now. With the help of the mods I was able to figure out the current naming convention which is to name it as "Sony DualShock 3 Wireless Controller" followed by the individual item code, as well as another item code if there are variants of it. I don't really have a problem with this setup, but I have to ask, is there any way to fit in the color as described on the packaging?

When trying to submit a new item, if you were to attempt to submit the name as "Sony DualShock 3 Wireless Controller Metallic Blue" or a variation of that, the prompt won't warn you of the already-existing "Sony DualShock 3 Wireless Controller CECHZC2U MB". Also, most people probably don't keep their controller box, which is the only place the full item code is listed (under the barcode, on the bottom of the box). Someone new to the site will probably search the color first, which is only included in the Alt-Name field. I don't really know if it should be considered an alternate name if it is the actual name of the color as described on the box. So I suppose my proposed name convention would be something like "Sony DualShock 3 Wireless Controller (color) [Item code] [additional item code if needed]". What are your thoughts?

Site Feedback / Developer edits not going through?
« on: July 12, 2022, 04:59:23 pm »
I've submitted a few developer edits the past few days but none of them got accepted or rejected when every other edit seemingly went through. Not sure what's going on. (Desktop browser)

Site Feedback / Can't delete or edit games in Finished
« on: December 09, 2021, 01:26:16 pm »
I put this in another thread a couple days ago instead of making a separate topic which is my bad. Basically, I can't edit the notes on my items in finished. It will say "Updated!" but won't stay when I refresh. So I tried to get around this by simply deleting the entry and adding it again with the correct notes. Unfortunately, that didn't work either.  ;D Even though you can delete a game and it'll go away, when you refresh the page, the game will come right back.

Been loving the new feature and I'm planning on taking full use of the notes section by filling it with my completion statuses.  :)

(Edit: Some error listings keep popping up in my Currently Playing and Finished? I think that's just a result from someone merging entries though)

Site Feedback / Finished games list
« on: October 07, 2021, 03:21:33 am »
I've been enjoying the Backlog and Currently Playing lists quite a bit but once you take a game through the backlog and then fully play through it, there's no satisfying place to put it afterwards! That's why I think a "completed" list would fit right in with the others. Right now, I use Google Sheets to track my finished games, but I'd much rather keep track on this site with all my other gaming-related lists. Thoughts?

Site Feedback / Backlog sidebar does not link properly
« on: July 03, 2021, 11:47:29 am »
(Desktop website) On the backlog page, the sidebar shows the platforms and categories of games in your backlog, but when you click on one of the links, it redirects to your collection page. So, I keep accidentally deleting games from my collection instead of my backlog. Not sure if this has been posted about already.
