How should we go about adding games that have been removed from the Google Play Store or App Store?

As far as I understand, once a game has been removed from the store, it can't be redownloaded if it's then deleted off of your phone, but they should still be tied to your account I think (can someone confirm this please?). Technically you could still have them in your digital collection. Should they even have entries at all? There are a lot of huge games that've been taken down over the years like the original Angry Birds, Flappy Bird, and Fortnite that I'm looking to add entries for.

Similar question for online-only games that have reached end of service, such as Pokemon Duel and others that I can't recall at the moment, which you cannot redownload OR play if it's installed on your phone. Should these be added to the database?

Site Feedback / New genre suggestions
« on: May 27, 2023, 10:18:37 am »
Here are some genre suggestions I found that could fit well into the existing genre field. They are slightly more specific than what we have right now, similar to the FPS and TPS/Action-RPG, etc options that were added a few years ago.
  • RTS (Real-time strategy)
  • MOBA (Multiplayer online battle arena)
  • Card game
  • Battle royale
  • 2D Platformer/3D Platformer
  • 2D Fighting/3D Fighting
  • Sandbox (For games like Minecraft, Terraria, etc)
  • Turn-based Strategy
  • Hack and Slash (this one is the least necessary, imo. Most hack and slashes would fit as one of the action genres.)
  • Virtual Life (for games like The Sims, Animal Crossing, etc.)
Possibly some others, will edit this post when I come across them while making new entries.

Video Game Database Discussion / Pokemon Mystery Gift Cards
« on: October 28, 2022, 07:27:01 am »
I have been amassing a small collection of Pokemon code cards since around 2016 or so. For anyone unfamiliar with what these are, you take a trip to GameStop or another store during a limited time period and get one for free from the register. It's a one-time use code for a rare Pokemon. Do these have a place in the database? I was thinking maybe they could go in Swag - Retail Code Cards but those are a bit different than what I'd be trying to list, since you have to pay for those, they give an entire game or subscription, and they're usually not just a flimsy piece of crappy cardstock paper like the Pokemon codes are.

Video Game Database Discussion / Controller naming conventions
« on: October 18, 2022, 09:42:17 pm »
I've been working on editing the DualShock 3 series of controllers for a couple days now. With the help of the mods I was able to figure out the current naming convention which is to name it as "Sony DualShock 3 Wireless Controller" followed by the individual item code, as well as another item code if there are variants of it. I don't really have a problem with this setup, but I have to ask, is there any way to fit in the color as described on the packaging?

When trying to submit a new item, if you were to attempt to submit the name as "Sony DualShock 3 Wireless Controller Metallic Blue" or a variation of that, the prompt won't warn you of the already-existing "Sony DualShock 3 Wireless Controller CECHZC2U MB". Also, most people probably don't keep their controller box, which is the only place the full item code is listed (under the barcode, on the bottom of the box). Someone new to the site will probably search the color first, which is only included in the Alt-Name field. I don't really know if it should be considered an alternate name if it is the actual name of the color as described on the box. So I suppose my proposed name convention would be something like "Sony DualShock 3 Wireless Controller (color) [Item code] [additional item code if needed]". What are your thoughts?

Site Feedback / Developer edits not going through?
« on: July 12, 2022, 04:59:23 pm »
I've submitted a few developer edits the past few days but none of them got accepted or rejected when every other edit seemingly went through. Not sure what's going on. (Desktop browser)

Site Feedback / Can't delete or edit games in Finished
« on: December 09, 2021, 01:26:16 pm »
I put this in another thread a couple days ago instead of making a separate topic which is my bad. Basically, I can't edit the notes on my items in finished. It will say "Updated!" but won't stay when I refresh. So I tried to get around this by simply deleting the entry and adding it again with the correct notes. Unfortunately, that didn't work either.  ;D Even though you can delete a game and it'll go away, when you refresh the page, the game will come right back.

Been loving the new feature and I'm planning on taking full use of the notes section by filling it with my completion statuses.  :)

(Edit: Some error listings keep popping up in my Currently Playing and Finished? I think that's just a result from someone merging entries though)

Site Feedback / Finished games list
« on: October 07, 2021, 03:21:33 am »
I've been enjoying the Backlog and Currently Playing lists quite a bit but once you take a game through the backlog and then fully play through it, there's no satisfying place to put it afterwards! That's why I think a "completed" list would fit right in with the others. Right now, I use Google Sheets to track my finished games, but I'd much rather keep track on this site with all my other gaming-related lists. Thoughts?

Site Feedback / Backlog sidebar does not link properly
« on: July 03, 2021, 11:47:29 am »
(Desktop website) On the backlog page, the sidebar shows the platforms and categories of games in your backlog, but when you click on one of the links, it redirects to your collection page. So, I keep accidentally deleting games from my collection instead of my backlog. Not sure if this has been posted about already.

General / Protective game cases?
« on: November 19, 2020, 01:49:20 pm »
I'm interested in getting a couple protective game cases for PS1-sized games to help prevent scratches, dirt, and whatnot from affecting the actual case (Like PSA-style boxes but without the grading). I haven't really considered getting them in the past but now that the quarantine has happened, some of my collection is really going up in value, so I'd like to take the extra effort to protect them. Does anyone have any advice on some good quality cases to buy or have any experience with these?

Video Game Database Discussion / PSN PlayStation Hits Images
« on: December 29, 2018, 11:17:55 am »
I'd like to poll and see what everyone thinks of this.
Earlier this year Sony unleashed their Greatest Hits branding (now labeled as PlayStation Hits) for their bestselling PS4 games. For physical copies this just means a new production line of those exact same games but now with a discount and a red banner on the artwork. However, for the PlayStation Store entries, all existing pages for these games are now sporting a red banner on their official store page image. There are no separate pages for non-PlayStation Hits copies.

For the PlayStation Store games on this site, they've all generally been using their newest official store images as their front cover artwork (unless the store image is low quality, common for older games). So my question to you all is, should we update the images for these PlayStation Hits games with their new PlayStation Hits branding, or keep the old ones? Below are two examples of the change.

General / Do you buy games you know you probably won't play?
« on: October 04, 2017, 10:42:20 pm »
So here's something that I feel we could discuss (I'm not sure if there was already a topic like this). Since we're all collecting games here, do any of you ever purchase games that you know you probably won't ever get into and play? It could be because you don't have the time to play, you're tired of a genre, or something to that degree.

The past month, my SO and I have been binge-buying games, especially more modern titles for PS3 and 360. He liked to pick up any games he thought had interesting cover art, even if he's never heard of them. But really, we both doubt that either of us will ever play them, or, if we do, it won't be but for a few minutes to try it out. A lot of them were incredible deals at pawn shops, so it was hard to resist adding them to our collection. Some of the games that come to mind are Lair and Clive Barker's Jericho - not exactly shovelware, but not really games that come to mind as some of the most noteworthy games of the last generation. We've decided to slow down though, mostly because we're quickly running out of shelf space for all of them, but also because it does seem a bit wasteful to be buying things that are almost only there to look pretty.

I think a majority of us are guilty of this, especially some of us with massive collections - certainly you don't have time to play all of those games, right? How do you feel about this subject?

I love editing entries but there's some confusion I have with digital games. Recently I've submitted a large chunk of edits for PSN NA games, a lot being for official store descriptions that I pulled straight from the PS Store itself, which got rejected (because it's plagiarism). That's fair, but some entries I found had that exact official PS Store description in the box text section, which I tried to remove and replace in the description category but that got rejected as well. I assumed that the store description is best off labelled as the literal description and not box text because, well, there's no "box" here when the games are all digital. A notable example of this would be Jet Set Radio https://vgcollect.com/item/38262 - what are the guidelines for this if there's any?

I've also taken the official PS Store images from their store page and tried to add them for some games, such as Dead Space Extraction, which currently has a very ugly image on its entry page https://vgcollect.com/item/13301 - however it was rejected (because the store image has no logo or text I presume). There's also other games like Dragon Age: Origins which also has an outdated picture on this site, but the image on the PS Store is absolutely no better. But what's worse, the outdated, pretty blurry image in use right now (https://vgcollect.com/item/61622) or the low res image on the store coupled with awful cropping? There's no way to win either way you go. There's quite a few other games like this out there.

I tried to resolve the issue once before with Jak 3. On the store page the official image is a low res, zoomed in, badly cropped picture of the official PS2 NA artwork.

So instead, I just made a better crop of the PS2 artwork myself of what I believe the PS Store image was supposed to be and submitted it - it looks decent enough. Only problem is that it's not technically official anymore.

The Steam category is pretty consistent as far as images go. PSN NA could be consistent too, I'd say it would make the database look a lot more clean. But when there's a lot of hideous official pictures on the PS Store, I don't know what to trade-off - cleanliness and consistency or straight accuracy?

Classic Video Games / Is Raystorm really that rare?
« on: August 09, 2017, 11:15:44 am »
So I was browsing rare PS1 games that I could add to my collection then I saw a site listing Raystorm as an expensive/rare game... what? I bought this game for six dollars or so 5 years ago and I had no idea it was worth anything. Heck, the only eBay offer for it right now on that page has it listed for almost 200 dollars. There's a few different disc versions too. Apparently the whole "Ray-" series is rare after looking it up a bit, but I can't really find any more information besides that. Does anyone know more about this? Why did the price spike so hard?

General / Skylanders
« on: December 25, 2011, 07:26:39 am »
Everyone knows about Skylanders, right? Theres those little figurines that you buy-- uh, well, I was wondering if they should be part of our collections or not. If so, what category would they be under when you submit them?
