Hardware and Tech / Steam Deck is Glorious - Change my Mind
« on: August 13, 2022, 06:08:25 pm »

Anybody here got one?

It’s great and can do far more than advertised.

Retro Arch
Xemu
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate
Epic Game Store
Steam

So far I have played:
Steam:
Ori and the Will of the Wisps (start to finish)
Nier Automata (couple of hours in)
20XX
ReCore
Horizon Zero Dawn
Aperature Desk Job

Steam Streaming from my PC
Crysis

Game Pass
Mortal Kombat

Xemu
Dead or Alive 2 Ultimate
Simpsons Hit n Run

It’s actually gotten me back into PC gaming and tearing through my PC backlog.

:-)

If so, do you do your own repairs/restore work?

Got any favorite sites?

I’ve been spending a fair amount of time on pinside the last couple years.

Off Topic / Talk me out of buying a delorean...
« on: December 16, 2018, 03:13:41 am »
I want to:

  • buy a Delorean
  • convert it to fully electric
  • deck it out like the Back to the Future one (there are shops that do this).

I’d have the electric plug go where the plutonium is supposed to go and rig it up in my garage so that when I plug it in it’s like when they put the hook in in the movie.

It’s a waste of money, a horrible investment, and completely pointless.

Yet I still want to do it.

Fortunately, I don’t have the money to make it happen. This topic is just for fun.

Pretending for a moment that I have the money and desire to pull this off...

Talk me out of it folks! Or share a crazy dream/goal you have!

Off Topic / Establishing meaningful active friendships as an adult
« on: November 04, 2018, 02:05:57 pm »
I remember as a kid interacting with friends outside of school on a regular basis.

While in college, between classes and work on a regular basis.

My parents would also have company over or go to friends houses and play cards, etc.

Now I rarely have company over. _rarely_ get invited to others places. I have a couple of friends but no one I’d say I’m really “tight” with anymore.

Is it society at large that’s become less physically social?

It’s not that I’m a gamer because I honestly rarely game anymore and when I do it’s at hours folks usually don’t hang out.

Do you still hang out with friends often? Have folks you are tight with? How do you keep it going?

Have you ever moved and had to make friends all over again? How do you do it?

I probably sound really lame right now but I’m totally serious.

I’ve been feeling pretty isolated and alone since moving to California 8 years ago.

Folks can’t afford to stay in the same area for long. They are super easily offended. Or crazy busy with the grind of their own lives.

I can’t be the only one wanting some healthy semi frequent camaraderie.

Classic Video Games / Why I’ve Transitioned to Arcades and Pinballs
« on: October 26, 2018, 03:53:54 am »
I’ve been struggling to stay onboard this console generation.

Don’t get me wrong, there are some great games this generation and the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro are impressive pieces of kit. But the now dominance of digital, delisting of top selling games, half done nature of most releases, and scarcity of new product due to underproducing has honestly taken most of the fun out of it for me.

I’m NOT abandoning video gaming, collecting, or anything like that. But I am certainly getting a stronger by the day feeling that there’s no point collecting for this generation and beyond. Most of these discs will be incomplete coasters 10 years from now.

At the same time I’ve been finding some good deals (some locally!) on arcade/pinball machines.

I think I appreciate most that the games are finished.

I also like that I can tinker with the hardware and craftsmanship a bit. Installing a software patch is kind of blah. But taking in a cabinet that’s had some mild abuse and restoring it to its glory days appearance is pretty fun.

Finding the right parts for a good price reminds me of searching for games on my wishlist.

Troubleshooting technical issues takes me down surprise researching rabbit holes where I learn some gaming history or some electronic/software stuff I never knew.

It’s been a fascinating experience.

Not saying it’s for everyone. But a few folks that follow me on twitter and Facebook have been wondering what the heck is going on with me so I figured I would share.

Anyone else on here collect Pinballs/Arcadess?

Marketplace / Looking for an original Area 51 cabinet.
« on: June 25, 2018, 10:09:33 pm »
I am looking for an Area 51 arcade cabinet with the original artwork.

I don’t care so much if the game itself works as long as the cabinet and artwork is intact and in good physical condition.

Been lurking on eBay and craigslist for months and can’t find one. :(

Anybody got a lead?

So it occurred to me today that I can’t think of a single physical game this generation where the physical version is “final and complete.”

By final and complete I mean doesn’t have any kind of required update to be downloaded and installed beyond what’s on the disc.

Are you aware of any physical games released this generation that are final and complete?

I think remakes and compilations come the closest. But even many of those have lots of patches for performance/etc.

10
I now actually count and catalog digital purchases as part of my collection.

In large part because there are so many games this generation that are impossible to find in physical or their physical versions are incomplete without additional downloads/patches/dlc.

Have you succumbed?

Hardware and Tech / My Game Boy Advance SP 101 Resurrection Project
« on: April 30, 2017, 06:22:24 pm »
It happened yesterday, around 1:00pm Pacific time.

We were getting ready to leave for a family get together when I hear a loud crash. It sounded like a Lego creation hitting the floor and shattering apart. This happens regularly.

My 14 year old son, on queue starts freaking out.

But unlike all the other times he's saying something much different this time...

Dad! I'm sorry! I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry.

I turn around and look at the floor.

I do not see Lego's

I see my crystal blue Game Boy advance SP model 101 I bought from theflea a few years ago (the best one I have) in pieces on the floor.

The family get together is for my sons birthday. I'll be damned if I'm going to let it ruin the day.

I look at my son and say "it was clearly an accident. We'll deal with it later."

I pick up the pieces and put them on the table.

Folks, in this thread I'll be chronicling my attempt to turn this tragedy into an upgrade.

Here is what I have to work with:

The case is not salvageable but everything else is.

A quick search on eBay for broken GBA SP's brought up many overpriced broken units ($40 or more!).

A search on Etsy brought up replacement shells for $30. No good.

Surprisingly Amazon brings up some very affordable options. Under $20.

I've ordered a nice looking Zelda replacement clamshell:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01LNJMXC4/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1493590971&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=gameboy+advance+sp+shell&dpPl=1&dpID=41yNst42rhL&ref=plSrch

It should arrive this week. When it does I'll follow up with pictures. Before and after, comment on ease of installation, build quality, and overall impressions.

Update May 2nd
Kit arrived yesterday (2 days later not bad!). It appeared to be shipped directly from Amazon and they send it in an envelope with zero padding. Fortunately it survived the trip unscarred.

What it contains:
A tri-wing screw driver.
All casing parts except the hinges.

I have pictures I will share later.

Build Quality:
I read a handful of reviews on Amazon gushing about this being an OEM quality replacement. Let me start by saying those reviews/comments are dead wrong.

The plastic is observably textured differently, thinner, and cheaper feeling than the original plastic. Period.

That said, it does not look bad. In most lighting and angles it looks pretty good. Look at it up close though. Or hold it for a second and the difference is obvious.

Have a sturdy tri wing screw driver handy. The one included in the kit must be made of tin foil because the bit breaks immediately. Reviewers complaints about it are right on. It's worthless.

The board, speaker and screen all fit as they should.

Getting the hinges out of the old SP is a major pain. I tried to force them out with a screwdriver as shown on all the YouTube videos. I was nervous I would damage them doing that and I was right.

After damaging one of them I resorted to cutting the plastic shell apart to get the hinges out. Cut my finger in the process. It was not fun. Took longer to get the hinges extracted from the old SP than it did to reassemble the new one.

Once assembled it works pretty well. The DPAD sits closer to the case body that the original but it did not seem to negatively affect gameplay. I played through and beat Kirby's Dreamland in about 20 minutes without a problem. The buttons are plenty responsive and work as they should.

The Nintendo logo for the top of the shell looks legit.

Because the plastic is so thin there is some light bleeding through the plastic where the power and battery are.

Overall, I would say it was worth the $18 to bring my SP 101 back from the dead. I would not recommend replacing a perfectly functional SP with this case though.

Comments, suggestions, and condolences from the peanut gallery are welcome.

Video Showcase / What do you think is missing from current game coverage?
« on: September 11, 2016, 04:51:19 pm »
Seems like there are a gazillion gamers broadcasting out there now (and I'm 100% ok with that).

We've got folks covering good games, folks covering bad games, retro, modern, opinion, rumors, playthroughs, the rare and obscure, etc.

Is there anything you feel is fundamentally missing?

What's the "man I would tune in if ya'll had..." For you?

Still bummed we didn't get a new Metriod this generation?

Further bummed no 2D Metriod seems to be in sight?

If you have a PC or Xbox One Moon Studios has you covered.

Ori and the Blind Forest is a georgeous reimagining of what a Super Merriod style game could be with current-gen hardware.

It's timing sensitive and pixel-perfect gameplay sections will have you tossing your controller only to pick it back up seconds later for "one last try".

The story is fantasy and lore rather than sci fi. The music is synth and industrial free but still ambient and forlorn.

Exploration and backtracking are par for the course. Requiring upgrades and stackable power ups to complete any area to %100.

Unlike Samus who is dressed like a walking tank but starts out surprisingly outgunned Ori is a coming of age story. Even as Ori goes stronger the character looks and feels very small and delicate compared to the enemies.

Saving can be accomplished via dedicated places on the map which also serve to teleport you from one part of the world to another.

You can also spawn temporary save points in most places using energy that would otherwise be used for concentrated attacks.

All in all an excellent game for anyone jonesing for a new 2D Metriod game!

update August 21, 2016
Beat the game 99% complete. Gonna get that last 1% if it kills me.

Excellent game start to finish with a touching story.

General / Doh! I know better!

At Wal-Mart tonight. Saw a game at a good price. I checked VGCollect, I don't have it.

I buy it, bring it home. I'm placing it on the shelf...

Dang it.

I already own Shovel Knight for WiiU.

I have no excuse. I've been slacking off on keeping my collection up to date.

Don't let this happen to you. :)
