General / Finished Halo CE for the OG XBoX Before 20th Anniversary
« on: August 30, 2021, 04:38:28 pm »
Not sure if this is interesting, just shows how pathetic I am, or really means not much of anything.

I finally finished my first Halo game, and I made sure it was the original and that I accomplished it right before the 20th anniversary arrives. There are a multitude of reasons why this never happened in the past and I will detail them now:

1. When the game first came out I was taking 21 credit hours at school and had no time for games or making money to buy games.
2. Soon after I got married and once again found there was no time for games or money to buy them (although I did pickup a Game Boy Advance for Advance Wars and WarioWare - always money for that)
3. Life had moved on and the XBox was old news once I had money and time again. Many years had passed and it felt silly to go back and play yesterday’s FPS.
4. Finally purchased an OG Xbox and copy of Halo CE. Found that my rear projection DLP 65 inch TV (which was cool At the time) was not bright enough to play this game in full sunlight. It was so hard to see in some of the levels. Gave up in frustration.
5. My first child was born and I had a new house, a new TV, and time in the middle of the night while I rocked her back to sleep to play. Made decent progress until I abandoned the game because my job changed and I ended up needing to do more work around the clock.
6. Fast forward to now and I finally beat the game today. That last level sucked. I didn’t realize how terrible I was at driving. Yet, here I am almost twenty years later - finished and game is compete.

What now? I need to find another game that has inspired decades of sequels and media to start. I guess it is time for Uncharted. Yep, never beat that one either.

Modern Video Games / Most Modern Games too Easy?
« on: February 01, 2018, 02:54:07 pm »
I was curious what people thought about modern games being too easy.

1. Is this a true statement?
2. If so, does this make a statement about current gamers?
3. Are games that are more difficult passed over in our current environment, or altered to achieve universal success?

General / Miss Final Fantasy XIV 1.0?
« on: February 01, 2018, 02:07:35 am »
Does anyone else miss Final Fantasy XIV 1.0?

I understand there was a lot of frustration with the beta, but towards the end before ARR showed up it was really fun to play. I'm kind of a masochist in the gaming department though. I like games that don't hold your hand and you have to work at it. Some of the fundamental menus and ideas were broken when it first launched and I think the team knew that and management pushed for the set release date. The arguments against it not being WOW and some of the subsequent changes make it frustrating to me.

Im glad the changes brought in new players, but there is a piece of me that wishes the old game returned.

General / Bravely Default Friends?
« on: January 13, 2018, 02:28:10 am »
I searched for a thread, but didn't find one. I also know this game is three years old, but I am just finally getting around to playing it due to my 70 hour work weeks, two young kids, and the million other things happening in life.

Anyone willing to friend up on 3DS to pass me some Bravely Default assistance?

My friend code is:
3024-8662-2444

Let me know your code back and I will get you added.  :D

General / Gamestop and UPS Teamed Up to Destroy Sonic
« on: August 15, 2017, 05:54:58 pm »
Just received my Sonic Mania Collector's Edition and it is all smooshed. Am I overreacting or does gamestop need to provide full refund of item and shipping? I hate mashed stuff.

Marketplace / Animal Crossing Amibo Cards Trade Thread
« on: March 13, 2017, 02:05:18 pm »
Anyone interested in making some Animal Crossing Amiibo card trades? I have a lot of cards I can trade from series 1.

If anyone is interested I could post the cards I need and what I have available. I just didn't want to go through the trouble if no one is interested.

Video Game Deals, Sales and Promotions / Target: Buy 2 get 1 free
« on: March 07, 2017, 03:55:14 pm »
Just a reminder for hunters: Target has a Buy 2 get 1 free promotion.

This works for Amiibo too (picked up all the new Breath of Wild ones this way). Also some Targets are getting low on Wii U games and they are not looking to restock. So pick up any now before prices get wacky from resellers.

Note that the promotion does not work on Switch titles.

They taped up the whole box and shipped it. All the corners are now dinged and the box is trashed with tape.  :( :o

General / VideoGaming Personal Timeline (Everyone Share!)
« on: October 06, 2016, 06:34:37 pm »
I thought this would be a fun thread for people to engage in. I was going to share a short videogame timeline for myself. Consoles and games that stand out in my decades of gaming in a historical timeline fashion. Hopefully everyone will share their own!

As you will notice I didn't detail every console or game that I purchased throughout the years otherwise this would be a 1000 page timeline. I tried to just pick out key events that stand out to me when I look back over time.

1980's

Tapper - First arcade game that really fascinated me and I loved playing.
Caveman by Tomy Tabletop Game - First in home video game
TRS-80 - First Computer I played games on (Magic Carpet is the only one I can remember)
Atari 2600 - The first console I ever played games on.
Q-Bert for Atari 2600 - The first two video game cartridges I chose on my own to be purchased.
Video Pinball for Atari 2600 - The first video game I received for a birthday present.

Legend of Zelda for NES - The first video game I borrowed from a friend to play.
Baseball Stars for NES - Created a league in my neighborhood to play through season mode.
Mega Man for NES - First time I bought a video game with my own cash at the store. ($20 at Toys R Us)
Dragon Warrior for NES - My first JRPG

1990's

Super Mario Bros. All-Stars for SNES - Religiously played this game while listening to 90's alternative rock everyday after school

Nintendo 64 and PlayStation - First two consoles I purchased all by myself. Drove myself to the store, pulled out my own bank card and paid. I remember being so upset that I had saved enough money to buy them both and then when I went to buy them I realized you had to buy memory cards or they were worthless. I ended up getting the N64 first and saved up a little bit more to pick up the PS1 a week later.
PS1 - First console I pirated games for (I had pirated games on IBM platforms before). I ended up taking the pirate chipset out when my legitimate copy of Legend of Dragoon wouldn't play when it detected it in my system.
Final Fantasy VII for PS1 - First video game that I couldn't stop playing. I would even dream about this game when my body couldn't stay awake any longer and fell asleep as I grinded levels.

Dreamcast - First console I picked up at launch.
Dreamcast - First console I played online with.

2000's

Super Smash Bros for GameCube - Used to play strip matches with my girlfriend (now my wife). Smash Bros has never been so much fun.

PlayStation 2 - First console that my girlfriend (now my wife) bought me. She also picked up Final Fantasy X for me. Surprised we still got married after she saw how many hours I poured in to gaming.
Dynasty Warriors 3 for PS2 - The first game that my girlfriend (now my wife) and I really got in to. We used to play this game all the time because we didn't have any money to do anything else.

Neo Geo AES and Sega Master System - First two retro consoles I purchased that I did not own from the original release time period.

Famicom Disk System - First foreign console I purchased (I know it is an add-on...)

Xbox 360 - Achievements. Changed how I gamed. I didn't want it to, but it did. I live with it and seek counseling.

PlayStation 4 and Xbox One -  The first generation of gaming that I have had a hard time coming to terms with. I feel like either the video game market or I have changed too much to appreciate the new generation of gaming. It looks amazing though, but my systems are collecting dust.

Wii U - First console that I shared with my daughter. Super Mario World 3d was the first game we played.

3ds - First console that I shared with my son. He checked out Mii Plaza the first time he played it.

Ok - someone else share, please!

Video Game Database Discussion / Image Not Showing Up
« on: February 17, 2016, 01:17:38 pm »
Referencing: http://vgcollect.com/item/97804

I have added a few items on this site and this is the first that the item image came up as blank when I was done. Not empty as though an image was not added, but it just shows up as a black square.

The file is a PNG file from the Nintendo.com website and it shows up fine on my computer. I tried editing the image a second time. Maybe once the edit is approved it will show up?

Any thoughts or help would be appreciated!

General / Nintendo NX and Achievements/Trophies
« on: February 01, 2016, 12:23:48 am »
What is everyone's opinion if Nintendo should include achievements/trophies for their new console(s)?

My personal choice is that they should. It would be cool to see a unique spin on it, but I'm sure that is hard to get third party publishers onboard.

I always thought it would be nice to show things I have accomplished in my Nintendo games with more than just a screenshot using Miiverse.

General / Game Systems You Wanted But Couldnt Buy
« on: January 26, 2016, 03:50:50 pm »
I wanted to start a discussion about game systems that you had wanted but could never get for some reason. This applies mostly to systems from your childhood but maybe it still applies to some.

I had always wanted a PC Engine (TurboGrafx with cd rom peripheral) when I was young. I could never afford $700 for the unit and cd drive so I pined for the system and read up on it. I loved all the Japanese games, cd games sounded amazing, and I swear the box had Saved By the Bell character Zack Morris. Actually that last one is probably reason not to want it.

General / Sony Interactive Entertainment (Dedicated Playstation Business)
« on: January 26, 2016, 11:53:41 am »
Anyone read the news today that Sony is merging Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Network Entertainment International in to Sony Interactive Entertainment.

That moves Shawn Layden to the head of Worldwide Studios at Sony Interactive Entertainment and bumps Shuhei Yoshida who will now report to Shawn.

Shawn will be reporting to Andrew House directly.

Hierarchy - if I understand it correctly:

Andrew House - Global CEO
Shawn Layden - Chairman of Worldwide Studios
Shuhei Yoshida - President of Worldwide Studios

Discuss here if you think this will be a beneficial move for Playstation, or if it will be business as usual.

My personal thought is this is a good move by Sony. It will bring some cohesiveness between the units and enable them to have better collaboration and discover ways to benefit each other. They were already working together (obviously they had to), but this will give them the incentive to work hand in hand since success of the company will only be obtained if they both succeed.

General / Buyee? Do you use?
« on: January 25, 2016, 03:17:43 pm »
Does anyone here use Buyee for Japanese auctions?

I was looking to pick up some more obscure Japanese games and it has been awhile since I have purchased from Japan directly. I read about a service called Buyee that was not around when I used to purchase. Are they worth using for Japan local auctions? Some of the stuff I am looking at it is hard finding international shippers currently.

Thanks for any feedback out there.

General / Games that Everyone Loves Except You
« on: January 25, 2016, 01:13:14 pm »
Thought this would be an interesting conversation. I searched the archive (still wiping the dust off) and didn't see any old threads - feel free to merge or kills this one if so.

Paraphrased from a post by haloofthesun: The thread is not about offending anyone who likes these games. What's most important about games is that you personally enjoy them. It doesn't matter what other people think about them.

Ones that come to mind for me are the following:
1. Call of Duty games (I like FPS - just not Call of Duty. I'm even really good at them - they just don't float my boat)
2. Pac-Man (No love here - never was. This might be for us older gamers who lived through the arcade/atari scene)
3. Grand Theft Auto (Don't understand why it is so loved)
4. Assassins Creed (Puzzled, confused, utterly bored)
5. Halo (at least I understand its significance in the online kill each other world we live in now)
6. Batman Arkham City (I loved Arkham Asylum and hated Arkham City - where most people praised City for opening up the gaming world)
7. Fallout series (did I play a Chinese knock off game that was sold at my local Target?)
