Classic Video Games / Re: Turbografx Hardware

I wish I bought a Turbografx system in its heyday. I remember seeing them at Toys R Us for $50 near the end of its run in the U.S.

That's precisely when I got mine. Except I only had Keith Courage and Power Golf, so it got sent away to the back of the closet in record time.

It truly is a beast, though. I'm really glad I never got rid of it.

I had no issue with PC games back in the day, even on a basic computer. I wish I could play Dark Earth again. I have so much nostalgia for it, but I would have no idea how to play it these days.

Well this should get you going: https://archive.org/download/Dark_Earth_1997_MicroProse

4-player Gauntlet would be my pick... such a classic!

That's cool, I look forward to your petty "I told you so."
Don't worry there's millions of those PCE-CD games in circulation it'll be awhile before it affects your anecdotal 5 disc collection.

Lol I'm glad I don't take forum posts personally like you do. Seems a miserable way to live.
Lol strange it sure looks like you do? What's with the angry messages and what's it got to do with what I said? Maybe stay on point?

"Seems a miserable way to live."  I think your projecting about yourself buddy.

I think it's all there for anyone to read. You accused me of using anecdotal evidence (which I absolutely did), then insulted my collection after I said that none of the discs are degrading, then used your own anecdotal evidence (Castlevania). Like a truly miserable person who's just looking for a fight. I'm finished with you.

Disc life is 25 years before it starts eroding.  If you want to see what the process looks like speeded up, look at VHS tapes.

There's no firm, predictable number of years as you're suggesting. I have nearly 40 TG-CD/PCE-CD games that have survived 25 years and not a single one has signs of becoming degraded. The quality of manufacturing and the way the disc has been handled are two factors that you have to consider.
scoobs22, anecdotal evidence means nothing you know? 25 years passing doesn't mean the suddenly break, it means the risk starts to climb from this point onwards.

Yes, I understand that. I also understand that when media manufacturers put a lifespan on their products, they don't really know if it's accurate, and they err on the side of caution to cover themselves. When it comes to how discs are holding up, I guess my collection is all I care about, and my collection is fine.

Nah, I'm not worried.

Seconded.

If we're going to worry about CD based consoles going bad, we'd better worry about disc rot, too. Which is a thing, sure, but just not all that pervasive at this point. Also, humans die after some years. At that point it's very difficult to care.

I've heard the composite only version lets you choose the aspect ratio, which I would suggest is essential here. I might pick up the composite version just for this option.

Wow, I wish I'd known that... I only have one console using S-vid (Goldstar CDO), and I'm going to get rid of it soon because I could use the money. I may have to get the composite only version, too. Thanks for sharing that!

I subscribe to the AtariAge take on necrobumping- if you've got something relevant to add that warrants bumping a thread, how old it is isn't terribly important. Of course, it's something that varies pretty wildly around the net.

Personally, I think for general opinion kind of things ('What's your top 10 games', 'is X system worth buying', etc.) maybe keep it within about a year. For something where the dialog has changed, older can be fine- for example, a thread about Limited Run Games from back at Breach & Clear's release that hasn't been active for a year and a half could reasonably be bumped to discuss adding Switch games to the lineup on a preorder basis- since now there's new information that might make people want to revise their earlier statements.

I'd love to hear the mod's take on this, since it's kind of a divisive thing.

I'm still an utter noob in the forums, but I like this take.

Though kinda rare to find these days. there were a few flat televisions that did both  composite and HDMI I used to own one. But I have no clue of where to find another one

This is true, but one should bear in mind that the HD CRTs do NOT work with old school light guns like the NES Zapper. Just a word of warning--it's still an excellent option for a lot of retro gamers.

Too many games too little time.

Boy oh boy you said a mouthful.

You truly have my deepest sympathy. I've only got one CRT and I'll be devastated whenever it buys the farm. I hope you find a solution that makes you happy sooner rather than later.

In the short term, maybe look at this little device on Amazon https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00V2ULHBS/. I've bought one and used it a bit in my bedroom (no CRT in there), and it's serviceable with the original consoles, if not ideal. Right now I run an AV Famicom (composite) and a 3DO (S-video) through it. For the cost, it's a good temporary solution if nothing else.

Also meant to mention that you can always run your consoles through a cheap-o passive switchbox to send one of many composite or S-video signals to the converter at any given time.
