I have more preorders, and specifically CE preorders, right now than I can remember ever having!

In order of release:

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2
Tales of Symphonia Chronicles CE
Dark Souls II Black Armor Ed.
Final Fantasy X-X2 HD Collection CE
Final Fantasy X-X2 HD Collection - Vita
Deception IV: Blood Ties
The Witch & The Hundred Knight
Demon Gaze CE
Drakengard 3 CE (x2)
Elder Scrolls Online Imperial Edition
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle

And I still plan on preordering Watch Dogs, Dying Light, Destiny and probably Wolfenstein.  That 20% discount from Best Buy's Gamer's Club Unlocked makes it harder to pass up games I want on day-1, especially when they combine that with a $10 credit-back preorder bonus.  Luckily, I've been selling a lot of unneeded/unwanted items on ebay lately so I've been able to cover everything so far with those profits.

I don't know if I played either Battletoads or TMNT on the NES - I think those may have come out after I sold my NES & games to get a C64.  But I played enough of TMNT in the arcade to give that my vote anyway.

I stumbled across a used copy of Dark Souls at lunch at a nearby GS in the Prepare To Die tin.  Was only $11, so I snatched it.  Tin looks to be in pretty good shape, but it needs cleaning - I'll know better tonight how much is clean-able and how much (if any) is damage.  Unfortunately that & the slipcover is all it had - no artbook, and not even the actual game case/manual.  But that's ok, I'm gonna trade just the disk in to Best Buy after work where they'll give me $10.50 for it.  So .50 for the tin, and then I can grab a new copy of the game at another GS for $15 this week.  I'm very happy with that find.  :)

Putting Skyrim on pause for the time being. Tonight - Monday is an all Castlevania weekend!

Awesome.  :)  I'm working on clearing my currently playing queue before next Tuesday, because whatever I haven't finished by then will get shelved while I play LoS2! :D

Hrm, off the top of my head I'd say:

Deception IV: Blood Ties
Demon Gaze
Drakengard 3
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle

Or, if you specifically mean indies:

The Witness
Fez (Vita)
Cuphead
Hotline Miami 2
Rogue Legacy (Vita)
Everybody's Gone To The Rapture
Rime

There are more too.  I like AAA games, but "off the beaten path" games have always been my bread & butter.  :)

I'll get a strategy guide for any RPG for collection purposes.  I'll also pickup CE guides for games that I really like, for the same reason.  I usually end up using the RPG guides, but the others are just for collecting.

1) Castlevania - I love Super Metroid, it's my favorite in the series by far (still haven't played the GBA games but want to).  However, I play through SotN at least every other year and adore it every time.  It's possibly my all-time favorite game.

If you're a fellow Castlevania fan, I would suggest playing Aria of Sorrow on the GBA, Dawn of Sorrow or Order of Eccelsia on DS. All three of those are excellent.

Thanks, I have the DS Castlevania's in my backlog and have been casually on the lookout for the GBA games.  I'm a huge fan of the series but I'm more of a console gamer in general than handheld.  Prior to my 3DS pickup last year I didn't even have anything that would play standard DS games, so I've been playing catch-up with that massive library.

Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon is a great Rogue-like, if you're into those.

I liked both the XMB and the new dashboards, but then again...  I don't play multi-player games.

Third'd.  Tho I'll say that it seems to me it's only a matter of time before they let you organize installed games into folders or something.  When I first saw how that was handled my first thought was "this could get out of hand quickly."

Thank you, you're a gentleman and a scholar.  ;)

2) Zelda, never had a SMS or even knew anyone who had one - my area was 100% NES.  Don't think it would have mattered, I was crazy about the original Zelda as a kid and it still holds a special spot for me.

3) Shinobi - Ninja Gaiden was just waaaay too hard, and I beat the original Mega Man as a kid.   :P  Used to love playing Shinobi in the arcade and later on the C64 I believe.  The PS2 Shinobi is also an overlooked gem, tho it's insanely hard as well.

4) I don't know that I've ever played either, so I'll abstain.

5) Chrono Trigger, tho it's a mark of shame that I've never finished either of these games.  I've played through at least 3/4's of Chrono Trigger several times but always trailed off at the end without finishing.  FF3 (6, 127, whatever :P ) I've barely started.  Didn't catch the FF bug until 7.

Bouncing between stuff ATM.  Mainly focused on DMC, but also playing some Dishonored and Rayman Legends (and Outlast sporadically, as my heart can take it  ;) ).  Add me to the list of people who haven't started Bravely Default yet.  I was determined to finish Y's: Memories of Celceta first because I knew if I didn't it would likely get forgotten.

Really looking forward to the new Castlevania next week.  :)

So far this year:

  • Bioshock Infinite: Burial At Sea Pt. 1
  • Bravely Default demo
  • Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
  • Y's: Memories of Celceta

I typically don't count demos, but since the BD demo took 8 hours and is supposedly unique content not found in the final game I felt it was worth listing.  Hope to add DMC to the list by the end of the week.

Working on grabbing some of the more obscure JRPGs I missed on the PS3 before they start getting hard to find.  Picked up the first 2 Hyperdimension Neptunias along with a copy of Deadly Premonition, all like new, using a b2g1 coupon at Gamestop last week.  Ordered the CE of Hyperdimension Neptunia 3 from someone on ebay since the price hasn't gone up from what it started at yet (I think I paid $9 over the original price) and it was also complete & like new (the game itself & soundtrack are both still sealed).

Question, what's the code for putting the last 5 you added in your sig?

General / Re: Tips for New/Newer Collector's
« on: February 19, 2014, 04:31:32 am »
I'm relatively new to the site but hardly new to collecting, so I thought I'd throw in my .02.  ;)

I completely agree with everyone who says pick a system you love.  It seems like there are "cool" systems to collect for (in the circles where people consider video game collecting to be cool...) and a lot of people seem to feel like if they don't collect for those they aren't real collectors.  That's silly.  I'm 38, grew up on Atari 2600 and NES, and I don't really care for collecting for any cartridge-based console.  The PS2 is my system of choice.  I have a few old games, mainly ones that I have a nostalgic connection to or that I just stumbled across at a yard sale or flea market for so cheap that I couldn't pass them up, but I don't go out of my way looking for them because I don't enjoy playing that type of game anymore.  I had my fill as a kid.

Also don't feel like collecting means getting EVERY game for a system.  It can mean that, and if you enjoy it and that's what you choose to do then more power to you.  But it's also perfectly acceptable to feel that games like Superman 64 lower the overall quality of your collection.  I straddle the fence a bit in this area.  I enjoy collecting JRPGs and I'll admit I'm pretty indiscriminate in regards to game quality if it's a JRPG for a system I collect for.  At the same time, I'm trading in Modern Warfare 2 for a whopping $2 tomorrow, because that isn't my kind of game and it bugs me to see it on my shelf.  It's YOUR collection, so the only "rules" that apply are yours!

Finally, something I haven't seen mentioned, if you enjoy collecting for current systems and have a habit of trading or selling games after you've finished them with the intention of buying them again later once they're cheaper (I'm guilty of this) - or if you're the type to wait for them to get cheap to begin with - then try to be aware of what types of games typically become hard to find.  It's easy to plan on picking up a game but because you seemingly see it everywhere you put it off & forget about it.  Then by the time you do remember it, it's suddenly very difficult to find and the value has skyrocketed.  You have no idea how many times I've regretted not picking up Suikoden II back in the day, but at the time I wasn't a collector and was fine with having borrowed a friend's copy and beaten that.  On a related note, if you go to trade in a game at a major retail chain and they seem to be giving an unusually high value for it then you might wanna check around & see if the game hasn't become rare without you knowing it.  ;)
