General / Dealing with spouses. Wait, it's not what you think!
« on: May 25, 2015, 04:15:50 pm »
I saw a post in another thread that gave me a topic idea.

I never sold any of my games back as a kid, I still have everything I owned (which is why you'll see games like Barbie for the NES in my collection) but my husband traded almost everything he owned to get an XBox when they first came out (before we were married, or I wouldn't have allowed it!) ...every time we go buying, we pick up games he used to have.

My wife appreciates and likes video games, but I'm the 'gamer' in the house.  We only have a very few games that we would refer to as 'hers.'  In the interest of simplicity, I list those game in my collection here  (You know, unless I would be embarrassed by it).

Does your spouse game?  Do they have a separate collection from yours, or is it one shared collection?  What about listing it here, are they together or separate?
If amauriel sees this thread, what about you?  I would think that you've listed one large shared collection, but I don't want to assume.  What's it like to collect with your spouse?

Modern Video Games / Help me choose my free game (Wii U).
« on: May 13, 2014, 07:30:39 pm »
As you probably know, Nintendo is offering a free game if you buy Mario Kart 8 for Wii U and register it with Club Nintendo between May 30, 2014 and July 31, 2014.  You can receive a free download code for one of the following Wii U games:

New Super Mario Bros.™ U
Pikmin™ 3
The Legend of Zelda™: The Wind Waker HD
Wii Party™ U

Now as an avid player, collector, and cheapskate, this offer is very appealing to me.  But I am having a difficult time deciding what to choose as my free game, so I thought I would open it up for discussion here.  Firstly, I already own two of the four on offer.  I already have both New Super Mario Bros. U and Wii Party U.  I could argue the merits of getting digital versions of these games to supplement or supplant my physical copies, but I'm not really interested in doing that.  That narrows the choice to Pikmin 3, or Wind Waker HD.

Now this post could devolve into a bit of a lengthy manifesto, so for the tl;dr crowd, I've bolded the main points for easy summary.

One of the main reasons that it is difficult to choose is that I am sure that I would have ended up with physical copies of both games eventually.  I am essentially deciding which game I will 'own' digitally and which game I will own physically.  I am not reflexively opposed to owning digital version of games.  I have given it much thought and contemplation and I find that digital games don't bother me to a certain degree, even with Nintendo's behind the times, system-locked policy.  I already own lots of digital games.  But these have always either been the smaller PSN or XBLA type games, and/or games that are only ever released digitally (or were released physically later, after I bought it);  I have never* bought a full disc released console game digitally.  When there is a choice, I prefer physical copies.  A small part of that preference is the collectable object mentality, a smaller part of that preference is future protecting my purchase, but the largest part of that preference is simply data storage.  I don't have to data manage a physical disc.  I know how I am and my collections grow so large that I have to face deleting games from the hard drive to download new ones.  I hate that process and physical media is still an advantage in this regard.

*almost never.  Price is king and sometimes a game is so cheap that I can't resist.  A low price makes it worth the trade off to me.

I like the Pikmin games, but I am behind on playing them.  That's one of the reasons I haven't bought Pikmin 3 yet.  I want it, but it is a lower priority compared to other games.  From what I've read I think that I will like Pikmin 3 the most, but I was really looking forward to having the game on my shelf, if I found a good deal.

As for Wind Waker, I already own the original release.  Generally, I don't like repurchasing the same game more than once.  This is a tenet of my collection that I don't always adhere to, but with all of the ports and re-releases, I had to draw the line somewhere.  I will just keep and play my original version...but I do have all of the other Zelda games including all of the previous re-releases.  Should I get Wind Waker as a freebie?  This will 'complete' this collection, but I won't have the box to show with the other Zelda games.  But since I would get it for free, I didn't 'buy' the same game for a second time.

Of course I could still buy the physical version of whichever I pick at a later time, but like I said, my cheap ass ways probably wouldn't let that happen.

Between the two, I am more prepared to spend money to buy Pikmin 3.   I am less willing to spend money, or as much money, on Wind Waker HD.  That might seem to push me to get Wind Waker HD for free, and buy Pikmin 3.  But actually it represents more of a financial savings for me to get Pikmin 3 for free, and buy Wind Waker HD for a cheap price later.

Well, what do you think?  Am I missing something obvious?  What game are you getting for free?  How does this mess up your physical vs. digital debate?

Classic Video Games / Your biggest classic gaming accomplishments
« on: February 18, 2014, 02:58:26 pm »
It's no secret that video games and how we play changes over the years.  Games have gotten easier and I might have lost a bit of my edge since the 8-bit days.  But I was thinking about how and what I used to play.  Would I still be capable of beating some of the games from my youth?  Probably not.  This would be due to my changing skill set and also having such an abundance of choice in what I play, there is less motivation to 'power through' a game.  So here are a couple of my gaming accomplishments from the past that I expect I will never complete again.

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link  http://vgcollect.com/item/5375 I beat this game with the help of the NES Game Atlas http://vgcollect.com/item/18069.  This was pre-internet.  I prefer not using a guide, but I don't feel that the design of this game (mostly the dungeons) is intuitive enough without a guide, and I've never liked mapping out games IRL.  After school I had a routine.  I would spend one night only grinding, and the next night tackling a dungeon.  I beat Shadow Link after several attempts with only swordplay, not knowing the crouchy-stabby trick.

Hyper Lode Runner http://vgcollect.com/item/14199  Beat every level.  I don't believe I would have the patience to figure out some of the digging puzzles now.

Boxxle http://vgcollect.com/item/14077  I didn't really care for this game or beat it, but while I owned it I cracked the passwords.  No big deal, only four digits, but I filled out a memo pad with all of the possible passwords.

So what are some of your classic gaming accomplishments?  It could be the hardest game you've beaten, or just a part of a game.  When was the last time you beat an 8-bit classic for the first time?

I have a sealed copy of Darksiders II Limited Edition Best Buy Exclusive with the 3D lenticular cover that I want to trade for the PS3 version of same.  If anyone is interested please let me know, otherwise this is probably going on ebay.

General / What rules govern your collecting?
« on: January 18, 2013, 05:59:48 pm »
Just an advance FYI, I am primarily a console gamer, I don't PC game much at all.  This post discusses my console and handheld game purchasing.

I know people have different ways that they collect video games.  Some collect by genre, system, era, etc., but some of us have a bit of everything.  Like many members here game condition and completeness are important factors.  I try to buy new over used when I can.  But I have other rules that I follow when making buying decisions.  I haven't always had these rules, and I add more when I need to address current trends.  These rules help keep my purchasing manageable for my budget and living space.  These are very loose rules, I can sometimes justify breaking them.

1.  Only buy games that I like or think that I will like.

This seems like a no brainer, but I don't really buy games for their collectability, or because of the popularity of the franchise.  The vast majority of the games in my collection were chosen by me because I found things that I liked about them, regardless of popular opinion or review scores.  I have moved away from buying a game that I don't like much because it is 'significant' in video game culture.

2.  It is okay to abandon a franchise or character.

This is a pretty bitter pill to swallow.  Part of being a completionist is trying to have every sequel, spin-off, or derivative of a game that I love.  Characters such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon have forced me to make an evaluation of game quality before making a purchase.  Which leads me to #3.

3.  It is okay to buy a good sequel without having every game in between.

4.  I try not to repurchase games I already own (ports and compilations).

Games are frequently ported to other consoles and reissued as compilations and I think that's a very good thing.  But I usually own the original releases.  Unless they have added something significant to the re-release, I try to avoid spending money on the same game again.  I am missing out on things like HD textures and trophy support, but I also like the purity of playing a game on it's original system.

5.  As a multi-console owner, I try to buy the 'superior' version of the multi-console game I am buying.

Sometimes it's obvious which version is better due to exclusive features or imperfect porting (see Bayonetta or The Orange Box), other times it's not so clear and each version has separate strengths and weaknesses.  I try to do enough research and pick the right one for me.  This has influenced me on #6.

6.  I can buy a 'Playstation' game on any system I please.

What I mean is that Crash Bandicoot, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, etc, are historically tied to the Playstation.  It feels 'right' to play these games' sequels with a Playstation controller.  But if it makes sense for me to, I'll buy a sequel for a Nintendo system, or a Microsoft system, or whatever (I think this rule sounds lame and obvious, but I have two friends who disagree with me and remain console specific for certain franchises).  On what system will I buy the new Tomb Raider?  I don't know yet!

7.  All other things being equal, I purchase physical media over digital (download) media.

I am not an staunch opponent to digital purchases and I have made many.  But it usually makes sense for me to buy the physical media.

As I think of more rules, I might edit this post.

What rules do you follow for your collections?  Are you in charge of your collection or vice versa?  Does it require this much thought and planning, or are you more relaxed about it?

23
There are so many free to play games currently and more coming all of the time.  Do you consider these as a part of your collection?  Do they only count if you are currently or have ever been an active player of that game?

I don't game much on PC, but I 'purchased' Team Fortress 2 on Steam when it went free to play.  I haven't downloaded it or played it, but I still consider it mine.

By that logic, any freemium game is potentially mine.  Does my collection get credit for League of Legends?

What are your thoughts?  Am I seriously over thinking this?  Regular packaged games are so much easier.

EDIT:  After posting this I sort of realized that this post is also about satisfying the hoarder portion of my brain.  I want to take 'ownership' of these things so they are part of my 'collection'.  Sorry, I don't mean to go all pop psychology on you.

Just to let anyone know I have several items up for auction right now.  Some recent hits and a few unique items.

What VGC members may be most interested in is the few NES game boxes I have for sale.  These are boxes that I don't have the game for and don't really intend to get.  I don't know if any of them are 'rare' but perhaps they'll fill a gap in your collection.

If anyone is interested you can check everything out here:http://www.ebay.com/sch/topspot123/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=50

Thanks!

Site Feedback / Advance search on multiple pages bug
« on: September 25, 2012, 03:20:09 pm »
If my advance search results are on multiple pages (more than 50 items), when I click on another page, the advance filtering goes away and it brings back ALL search results.

For instance, advance search "magazine" for PS1 [NA] and you get 51 results across two pages.  When I click page 2, it returns all 257 results across 6 pages.  The url loses it's &platform filter.  I can manually add it back to the url to get the proper page.  Hope this helps!

BTW Thanks for your help Matt.

Site Feedback / Spelling debate
« on: August 09, 2012, 06:33:54 pm »
In the 'other optional details' field I noticed the Cart/Disk label and it occurred to me that Cart/Disc would be the more common spelling.  I'm not sure if anyone really cares, including myself.  I was just curious about the general consensus and how difficult it would be to change it.

Site Feedback / Batch submit and demo disc question
« on: July 21, 2012, 07:16:52 pm »
I have a bunch of game demo discs to add and was wondering if there was a way to submit an excel page as a batch upload?  I'm referring specifically to the Xbox Magazine demo discs #2-#131 (#1 is just a standard DVD) and PlayStation Magazine demo discs #49, #51, #53, and #55-#112.  The bulk of the info for each would be the same and it would be very tedious to submit each individually.  Just curious.

Secondly,  several of the mid-range Xbox Magazine demo discs have specific content for both Xbox and Xbox 360.  Which platform would it be preferable to list those for?

I've been slowly filling out my collection and I come across a problem.

Should I list my UMD Videos?

pros:  I keep them with my PSP games collection, they have the same cases, they are only playable on the PSP-a video game player.

cons:  They aren't video games, nor are they directly video game related.

They don't currently have a separate category here.  Should they have one added?  If I add them to my collection, should I just list them under PSP?  What does anyone else think?

First off, I am brand new to vgcollect, and I like what I've seen so far.  I have a large and ever growing collection of video games, video game merch., and other gaming related items from the common to the eclectic.

I have 30 ebay auctions up currently that house some of these items.  Here are a couple of the highlights:
a few music/rhythm games for the PS2 (Rock Band, Guitar Hero),
two copies of Personal Trainer: Walking, including two pedometers, new and unopened,
various game holders/cases,
a lot of 28 Official U. S. Playstation Magazine demo discs,
several playable games on DVD format, and an interactive DVD movie,
games for oddball systems like the Gamewave and XavixPort,
and the Club Nintendo exclusive Game and Watch Collection 1 and 2 for the DS system(s).

I collect mostly for my own enjoyment, but many of these items are things that I ended up with multiple copies of and this seems to be the perfect place to find someone who would find these things interesting.

There are other items too so if I have piqued your interest please check them all out:
