Modern Video Games / Persona 5 Take Your Heart Edition: Back in Stock!
« on: April 12, 2017, 06:27:21 pm »
Hey all!

Atlus had a notification a few hours ago that limited editions are back in stock at Amazon, at the standard 89.99 price! If you've been wanting one, now's a great time to pick up a copy!  ;D

As of the time of this posting, Amazon says they are still in stock.  :D

Too bad they didn't add TR: Anniversary to it, I preferred that one over Legend (except for the damn quick-time achievements you have to get right the first time... got all of 'em but one, nyah. Dx ).

General / Quick question: RE Mercenaries on XB1 and RE4
« on: April 07, 2017, 08:59:02 pm »
Hey all! A quick question.

One of my favorite parts (er, well... probably my favorite part, actually) of RE5 was the unlockable Mercs Mode. I saw that it got a Gold Edition release on PS3, and it appears that the PS4/XB1 port is basically the same thing. But I had a few questions about it that I was hoping someone could help with...

The wiki says "The Mercenaries United is a minigame available in the PS4 and Xbox One release of Resident Evil 5. It is a combination of the game's The Mercenaries and The Mercenaries Reunion. All characters and stages from both modes can be selected from the beginning.[1]" So is Mercs mode unlocked from the start (i.e. I don't have to finish the campaign again)? Are the alternate costumes also unlocked, or do those still have to be unlocked again before they are usable?

As for RE4, I had never known until perhaps some time ago that there was even a Mercs Mode in it. Does anyone know if/how it differs between console versions (GC/Wii/PS4)? Just curious.

Thanks!  :D

I think it's kind of unfortunate that these extra modes were kinda flushed down the toilet as they were, in favor of the newer design in RE:R/2. I really liked Mercs Mode as it was presented in 5 & the 3DS version (the touch screen inventory is a great addition), and I wish I knew why they felt it needed to be changed (or, rather, replaced) in later releases. The new enemy levelling (i.e. either being two shot kills if you're too experienced or bullet sponges that make winning impossible if you're too inexperienced) is kinda offputting to me at the extreme ends. I liked the weapon loadouts/level design present in RE5/Mercs3D, both which felt pretty balanced to me.

Modern Video Games / Re: Streaming and new video games
« on: April 04, 2017, 06:59:33 pm »
To keep it short and simple, my initial reaction:

I'm totally fine with them encouraging people not to share spoilery-content.

I'm totally not fine with content ID claims as a result, which not only limits freedom of showing/streaming content, but may also negatively impact reviews and have potential consequences if other games follow suit ("I'd like to show you how buggy the second half of the game is, but content-ID makes that near impossible"). Not to mention gaining access to certain in-game content for re-watching purposes, limiting VIDEO LENGTH (really???), etc.

I don't blame Atlus USA, though, they seemed to have stated that it wasn't their choice; as with Nintendo, it kinda sounds like it's the Japanese side of the business that's dictating these shitty-ass policies. YouTube obviously isn't helping, as usual.

Video Showcase / Re: Senran Kagura: Estival Versus - DesignSection
« on: April 02, 2017, 06:32:22 pm »
Here's another DesignSection, I previously did Shantae if some of you recall.  Bit of an oddball find however this time, seems suitable, considering the 'nature' of this series.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiQbcZgWiBo if you don't want to watch the whole thing, give it a skip to about (12:52) https://youtu.be/tiQbcZgWiBo?t=12m52s to get the gist of what I'm talking about.

Does anyone know of any games that have this sort of thing related to its soundtrack? Because this was an unexpected find for me.

Unfortunately, no, I don't think I've ever seen comments like that on an OST (either included on or off disc). It's definitely a nice addition! Music is still one of those things that feels a bit under-appreciated to me when it comes to games, so it's nice to see those little tid-bits included.

As for the Switch: I'm agreeing with what others have implied, which is that the Switch has no reason not to be successful... it's just that it's a matter of time. Comparisons have been made to the 3DS, which also started slow, but eventually went up in sales due to increasing support. I know it's kind of a simplistic/cop-outy answer, but it really just depends on Nintendo. People want Metroid and old IPs revived, and it needs 3rd party support; if it gets those properly this time around, I think it should do just fine. And especially with the way Xbox/PS4 stuff has been going, Nintendo really needs to work on differentiating itself and putting out console exclusives that are worth picking up a Switch for. Obviously, from a tech perspective, it won't be competing with an Xbox/PS4, so it has to compete in other ways.

Fun note, Ben Heck did a breakdown of the switch, and found that the RAM (I think? It was some component) was made to be easily replaceable; He suspects we'll see a Switch with upgraded hardware in the near future. Others have noted that Nintendo had patents or copyrights or something like that mentioning VR-esque tech. So it's very possible that the Switch could also act as Nintendo's VR-esque machine, which (at it's price point) could help to sell it and make it very competitive, with the proper game support.

As for the 3DS: business.financialpost.com says here that "Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima went on record last fall saying that while the company's upcoming hybrid console, dubbed Switch, will presumably succeed its home console, the Wii U, it will not replace its portable game machine, Nintendo 3DS.Jan 25, 2017." That's from Google, and just one source, but it is a statement from the President, himself. I think they will continue to have a completely independent, portable platform. The *new* 3DS hasn't released all that many titles geared toward it specifically, but as Indenton said, playing games like Pokemon Sun on an old 3DS XL has resulted in really noticeable issues. Sony hasn't spoken a word about a follow-up to the Vita, and they were basically the only competitor this generation for mobile stuff (aside from tablets/phones obviously). Until this happens, I think Nintendo may be comfortable with releasing games for the *new* 3DS, as we are seeing with Fire Emblem titles.

Now, I guess it always *could* happen that the Switch becomes so successful that they decide to focus on just that, but I find it unlikely. Despite it's portability, I'm not exactly sure that it can replace the portability a 3DS has in an urban environment like Tokyo, etc. They also still own the GameBoy name; could be the next installment is a new GameBoy after the 3DS. Who knows?

TL;DR - *New* 3DS doesn't have any competitors, and graphical power (not to be confused with presentation) has never been Nintendo's strong point or concern, for the most part. Fire Emblem indicates it still has some life left it officially, and unless Nintendo feels compelled to replace it, there's not really any reason to for now. I don't think the Switch will effect that much, if at all.

Someone mentioned 2018... that sounds pretty good to me. I guess it's just a question of where will they go from here? Who knows, maybe it will be a sort of Switch companion; a much smaller version that uses the same controllers, perhaps? Imagine a GBA SP, but the bottom are the two detachable controllers... could be interesting haha.

Though now I'm starting to seriously wonder what we might see integrated, either in philosophy or shared components, from the Switch in a new portable console. I could definitely see cross-platform capabilities/play.

Marketplace / Re: DS Games for Trade
« on: March 14, 2017, 09:42:16 am »
Hey everyone! It's been a while since I've posted, but I'm back around again with a little list of DS games to trade and also a few I'm looking for!
...
There are quite a few other DS Games I'm looking for, this is just a list of some of the titles! Lemme know if you have other DS games to offer! :)

Are you wanting these if we find them at a store? I think one of my GameStop's use to have Rune Factory, but they may have sold it, it's been a long time.

And damn, our collections have a lot of similar stuff haha. xD But I also like SMT, so no surprise I guess. :P

(Hey all! Just posting a last call on this. I'll be returning it in a day or two if I don't get any more notices, so make sure to let me know if you're interested before then!)

39
FYI, the pictures didn't load for me... I might have a friend who's interested. Once pictures are added, I'll pass it on to him!

Hey there!

Sorry! The pictures showed up the day I posted it, but I checked it today and they were gone. :/ I'll try editing the links and see if it happens again. Thanks for passing it along!

Hi everyone!  :D

I'll keep this short: I picked up a copy of Breath of the Wild for a friend (since my Walmart still had one and his were all out), but it ended up that He already bought one. So, instead of returning it to the store, I thought I'd offer it on here first. I'm letting this sell for the retail price ($99.98) plus tax and shipping (rounded up to the nearest dollar), so all my costs are covered. It's never been opened, just bought it yesterday and brought it home. You can see a few pictures below!

I would like to explicitly state these things first though, to be clear:

*If you want the package insured, that can be tacked on to shipping for you. Otherwise, unless it's free, I won't insure the package. Insurance is like $2 I think.
*Will be sent via USPS. Shipping will probably be about $15 - $20 it looks like.
*No scalping, please. I totally understand keeping something unopened and deciding to sell it off later, but my intent on selling this, for this price, is so that someone
doesn't get scalped. Don't make me come kick you in the noggin' on Ebay.  :P

Pictures below! If you have any questions, just PM me or ask in the thread. Additional pictures will be made available on request! First come, first served. Thanks!

I haven't sped run before but I have been binge watching speed runners and I want to try to dedicate myself to a game and speed run it.  I was thinking Mario 64 or Breath of the wild because I have been playing those two lately. :)

Does anyone here speed run or have been to speedrun conventions like AGDQ?   :D

I might suggest starting with something less lengthy, like as was mentioned before, the original super mario bros. What you're going to run into with speedrunning a game like BotW/Mario 64 is that you have to input a LOT of time for a single playthrough (assuming you're doing a full run, not these 5 minute deals), while having very little experience. Progress will probably be a bit slow, and you may not see improvements in great strides due to the length a single run requires.

Instead, start with something much more simple. If you begin by speedrunning the first level of super mario bros. (as was mentioned), or even just completing all of world 1, there are several benefits.

1. A single playthrough requires very little time. Therefore your rate of improvement has the potential to be much greater than having to spend 2 hours just to finish a single speedrun (if you can finish and learn from 10 speedruns in the time it takes to finish 1.5 mario 64 speedruns, you're potentially seeing many more small improvements in the same amount of time). This will be much easier on the morale, and for someone just starting out, it's important to have more steady improvement, I imagine.

2. If you fuck up a speedrun completely in a short game, no big deal, a very small investment. Fuck up your Mario 64 speedrun 45 minutes in and you wasted a lot of time. That's going to feel like a big setback, I imagine. Again, morale.

3. I think starting small is going to teach you more about speedruns faster than a marathon. After all, speedruns (in games like Mighty Switch Force at least) are all about shaving those little seconds; games with shorter runs demand that every millisecond be saved. You'll have to pay attention to details, and get really tight on the controls; one mess up in any game is going to potentially cost you a lot of time. These transfer well to longer runs I imagine. as they demand the same strategies over a longer period.

3.5 - Also consider that with something short, there are only a limited number of ways it can be ran at the fastest time. This means it's very easy to watch a speedrun (or your own) and take notes, or even read another person's analysis. What techniques do they use to shave off time? Are they conventional or unconventional? What kind of skills do they require to perform well? Are there any methods of practice they use to perform consistently? Consistency for longer speedruns is key, so you also have to focus on perfecting the basics as well.

TL;DR - I feel as if tackling a game like BotW/M64 is like trying to run a 50 mile race when you've never ran a marathon before. Instead, start with a 5K. Work your way up. Of course, only you know what games you like and don't like, and to what degree you can handle these learning curves, how fast you learn, etc. I would just think it would be better to start with something small, short, and sweet, then build upon it.

Of course, again, I guess these games can be completed in a short amount of time depending upon what is achieved in the speedrun, if there are glitches, etc. But I'd highly advise starting small if you can help it. I like Mighty Switch Force; levels don't take any more than like 3.5 minutes, and controls are limited and tight, so you can very quickly learn how to shave time off your runs as you practice over and over, and learn to hone technique (learning how many shots different enemies take for instance, and using the exact amount as to not waste any extra time, for example).

Hardware and Tech / Re: Original Xbox: Disk Drive Replacement/Fix?
« on: February 20, 2017, 04:59:06 pm »
Give me your address, I'll send you a working drive. :)

I have 9 xboxes for exactly this reason (parts).

Also Stone Age Gamer sells replacement drives. I bought one from them to fix my first faulty drive.

I soon discovered though that I can find complete consoles at the thrift store for the same price. :)

Was yours also a Thompson drive? Holy crap though, 9 of 'em??? xD

It'd be much appreciated.  ;D I'll contact you on Facebook haha.

Though, if anyone else has ideas for fixing it in the meantime, still feel free to post, as it'd be good knowledge to have!

Hardware and Tech / Original Xbox: Disk Drive Replacement/Fix?
« on: February 20, 2017, 01:20:30 am »
Hey all!

So, quite some time ago, I posted that my original Xbox was having issues. It would either...

1. Come up with an error message when a disk was inserted, saying it wouldn't read. OR...

2. Would read the disk, it'd play for 10 or 15 minutes, then stop and show a disc read error.

Well, I tried cleaning the laser lens, tray, and spinner. Loaded up Tenchu, plays fine for about 15 minutes, then suddenly the music stops, and we've got the error message. I assume this means that a dirty lens isn't the issue, and the disc drive is. For the record, I have cleaned the disk, and the error persists. I tried a different game and it wouldn't load at all, but that one is very damaged. The Tenchu one looks fine to me.

I was wondering if anyone has repaired a disc drive, or knows a place to get a replacement *cheap*? Ebay wants $50 for a used or new drive for the original Xbox; the price I could basically buy a new console for. I wouldn't have a problem fixing the old one for the most part, except I don't know what's wrong, and trying to find info on the internet hasn't helped much.

If you are going to buy the video game version of bashing your head against the wall, try the Atariage marketplace first. Ebay is a crapshoot and when a seller describes a 5200 as "working" it doesn't mean it's working well. I'm not going to bash the 5200 but I went with an 800XL computer over a 5200 as it had mostly the same games, plus several hundred more, and you could use standard 9 pin joysticks, a genesis pad, etc.

For you, I'd stick with the 2600. Unless you're really jonesing for a 5200 exclusive title to play, you're not really missing anything with the 5200 library and a console that will need more maintenance than a 20 year old car.

Shit, I totally forgot about the controller port issue. :o

In any case, let us know what you pick up!

45
I don't have experience with the 5200, but from what videos I've watched, it seems like they have a problem with shitty controllers. So check for that on listings.

As for the console... well, it just depends on what you want. Are there particular games you want to play that are only available on the 5200? If so, are they affordable for you personally? Are they worth the price of entry (price of console)? And, since I'm not familiar with 5200s, does the console tend to have any hardware problems etc. that it's infamous for or prone to? Also, keep in mind that Ataris are very, very easily emulated too. Obviously most of us like to have physical merch, but that's another thing to consider as far as price of entry goes.

Personally, unless you have some specific games you really want a 5200 for, I might pass on it. While it's true that you'd save money down the road by buying a system that plays 5200 and 2600 games, you may also come to realize that you do or don't particularly like that console/it's games as you collect more of them. Hell, for $65 buy it now on Ebay you can get a 2600 jr and 10 games (approximately 1/3rd of the maximum you're willing to spend right now). I also found this 2 port model of the 5200 for a much cheaper buy it now price than you were looking at. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Atari-5200-2-port-model-with-ac-adapter-and-3-games-/282353327838?hash=item41bd91dede:g:kr8AAOSwo4pYmekO

Hell, here's two of 'em haha.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-ATARI-5200-4-PORT-SYSTEMS-TESTED-WORKING-4-CONTROLLERS-8-GAMES-/332116781716?hash=item4d53b3ea94:g:haIAAOSw44BYd~Qa

So in a sense, i guess since 5200s are around the same price, you could go with one of those if you really want. But remember the above questions, and also look into the controller situation. I don't know how popular garage sales are around your area, but I guess it's always possible you could find a system at a pawn shop or something for cheaper, too (probably not a 5200, but a 2600 maybe).

In any case, I'd lower my budget. Looks like you should be able to get started for under $100 easily.

Personally, I'm not an Atari guy, so maybe others will chime in. I have a 2600 and will pick up a game for a buck now and then (Atari game art is among my favorite kind), but I usually just emulate since it's more convenient.

*EDIT: And obviously, call/check out your local (nor not so local haha) retro shops! Even if they don't have the system, you can see if they have games (that way you can buy locally/semi-locally, Ebay prices can suck it lol). It's good to have a source instead of having to buy off the internet all the time. My not-so-local Game X-Change mostly had 2600 stuff, but there was a 5200 game or two popped in there as well, I think. And maybe an Intellivison and/or pong system, I'm gonna have to check it out next time...
