Video Game Database Discussion / IBM PCjr Section?
« on: July 08, 2023, 12:32:23 am »
Hey guys,

Just curious if we have a IBM PCjr section? I'm asking because some of the software actually came on cartridges. The one I have is called "Hardware Reference Library - Cartridge BASIC", and I'm honestly not quite sure where to file it under. Thanks!

Site Feedback / Rejected edits and site advancement
« on: February 23, 2023, 01:31:55 pm »
Hey Folks,

So I just wanted to make a small observation about rejected edits. As a member of this community for over 10 years, I take a lot of pride in this site along with everyone else involved. Every time I log in it's like coming home after a long day's work and finally getting to sit down at the dinner table. At this point the site itself is almost as nostalgic as some of my beloved games. It's comfort food really.

Over the past few recent years however I've noticed many of my edits being rejected. I honestly feel this is hindering the progress and maturation of the site, which relies heavily on user submitted information. I put a lot of time and care into researching accurate information before submitting it to the site, and often times it still gets rejected.

More times that not I'll be reading the back of the box in my hands while comparing that to the source of information I find on the web, just to make sure everything lines up 100%. Sometimes I even boot up the game just to make sure the developer and publisher logo's coincide with the facts as well. I genuinely take this very seriously, but with the amount of rejects I receive it's just not worth spending the time anymore.

At the end of the day, I just want to see this site grow and flourish into the best damn video game database in existence.

Thank you for your time,

Site Feedback / What do you consider an official release?
« on: February 21, 2022, 10:05:32 pm »
I've noticed many third party accessories are now falling under the category of "unofficial release", which I believe to be wrong. Are we only considering first party accessories official now?

Because to me, all the old third party brands such as Nuby, Naki, Interact, Mad Catz etc, these were HUGE, well known third party companies producing these peripherals. I truly believe these should fall under "Official".

To me, an "UNofficial release" would be something like this, a special adapter some guy is selling on the forums, or a piece of homebrew software. Now THOSE are unofficial.

Thanks for hearing me out

Site Feedback / User reviews for entire database
« on: August 09, 2021, 08:21:01 pm »
Hey Gang,

Just had a great idea for the site. I thought it would be awesome if we were all able to submit reviews for any item in the database. Obviously you could review games, however this would be extremely beneficial for lesser known swag type items, like statues, strategy guides, carrying cases, etc.  This would allow for users to go really in-depth about a particular item, giving first hand information that may not be available anywhere else on the net.

If we placed another tab at the top of each entry, right in between "Info" & "History", I think this would look excellent.

Anyhow, just an idea I wanted pass on to the team.  Keep up the great work!

Site Feedback / View collection by alphabet drop down
« on: July 29, 2021, 12:41:22 pm »
Hey VGC Team,

I have a feature request I've wanted to ask about for a long time. Having a pretty sizable collection can make browsing for a specific title within my collection quite a chore at times. If we were able to implement a small drop down window with the letter of the alphabet, allowing you to view your collection by the letter, this would make things 10x faster. Here's a perfect example.

I have over 500 DS games. When searching though my DS collection the way it is now, you can only browse by page 1, 2, 3, 25, 26, etc. Now this is fine when looking for a game that starts with A-D or W-Z, but when trying to find a game that say lands somewhere in the middle of the alphabet (J-S) I have to constantly click through multiple pages (5, 7, 9, 11, etc) until i finally find the right page.  This takes an incredible amount of time, that could all be solved with a simple little alphabet drop down box.

Using my own collection, I drew up a quick example of what this might look like.

Hopefully this is something that isn't too complicated. I would love to see this feature, and I think a lot of other users would appreciate it as well.  :)

Hey Folks,

Just wanted to say that if anyone is looking for a box protector for Pokemon Pinball or Perfect Dark for Game Boy Color, I've found a great alternative if you don't feel like spending an arm and a leg to import one from the Netherlands.

I've found that a SNES box protector fits nice and snug on these oversized GBC game boxes. Vertically they actually fit like a glove, but of course horizontally the protector extends about an extra inch on either side. Still though, it fits so perfectly that it won't even slide around in the protector unless you give it a good shake.

It honestly doesn't look half bad, and hey it's much better than box just sitting out butt naked in the wind.  ;D

If you want a protector that's tailor made for these oversized boxes, the ONLY one available is made in the Netherlands, sold here:

There's not too much info out there about this particular box size, so just felt like sharing this with the community here.

Site Feedback / Site Feature Request - Sort by Alphabet
« on: June 17, 2020, 01:08:05 pm »
Hello there VGC Guru's,

I was hoping one day we could perhaps add the option to sort your collection by a chosen letter of the Alphabet.

For example, my PS1 collection spans across 25 pages of entries. As you can imagine, trying to find a game somewhere in the middle (L, M, or N's for instance) takes a considerable amount of clicking and page loading.

I'm picturing a little drop down box to the right of the number pages at the top of the list, where I can choose from A-Z.  I think this would be super beneficial to many members of our community  :D

Cheers,
Retro

General / Welcome to the VGC Arena
« on: April 15, 2020, 02:43:13 am »
Hey Gang,

I was thinking this site needs more camaraderie. In times like were in now, I think it be pretty sweet to have something to bring us all together. Since we all live on opposite sides of the world from each other, I was thinking... We should have monthly game challenges.  Nintendo Power used to do this back in the day called the Arena.  They would post 3 challenges for that month, then you would bust your ass trying to beat the best time, and take a Polaroid picture and send them into to Nintendo Power. Good times indeed  ;D

So I'm thinking we should do that right here on VGC. Post 2-3 challenges a month, and users could submit their best scores via screenshot. This will all be played on real hardware only, with a picture of your setup, score on the TV, and your name somewhere in the picture. This is the best way to avoid any kind of cheating, and makes it a more genuine playing field for everyone involved.

So who's with me?

Site Feedback / Move "Logout" button
« on: December 26, 2019, 05:27:00 am »
Hey folks,

Don't know if anyone else has this issue, but sometimes when trying to search the database for a title on the mobile site, I inadvertently hit the logout button because there so close together. Then I have to log back in, which is kind of a pain in the tush. I'd like to suggest we move the log out button away from the search bar if that's possible. Thanks everyone, and happy holidays.  :D

VGCollect for Android / Starting to feel ignored
« on: April 12, 2018, 01:45:43 pm »
Hey Jason & or other app devs,

As you know the garage sale season is right around the corner. I'll soon be making maps, and going on the hunt for pirates booty.

However, we still don't have a working text based app.  Myself and countless others have asked nicely on the status of the text based app, but have not heard a word back.

Can you PLEASE re-enable the old app?  or aleast make the new app functional with text only?  The current text view is still terribly slow.  The mobile website is functional yes, but not ideal when out in the wild and you need to look things up quickly.

Please for the love of god, get back to us! ;)  we just want text

VGCollect for Android / Any Progress on Android App?
« on: February 22, 2018, 03:29:06 pm »
Hi Jason and VGC gang,

I was just wondering if any further progress has been made on the VGC App?  I would LOVE it if you added a plain old text only view. I have a very sizable collection, and as it is now, the app takes forever to load.

The text only mode that is available now still pulls some form of HTML i believe, as it's incredibly slow to load.

All i really want is for the new app to run like the old app.  God i miss that thing.. it was BLAZING fast.  Gotta be fast when your out hunting for games in the wild  ;)   And man Hunting season is quickly approaching!

Any update you have would be much appreciated.

thanks,

VGCollect for Android / Please re-enable OLD App! :)
« on: July 14, 2017, 10:01:18 am »
Hey Jason and Android Team,

Please please please re-enable the old app. I have a very sizable collection, and I used to be able to fly through the text only app in seconds. This really helped me out in the wild when hunting for games.  I am no longer able to log in. Can you please fix this?  I would really appreciate it.

thank you,

Site Feedback / Move "Submit New Item" button
« on: March 05, 2016, 09:07:28 pm »
Hey gang,

I have a theory as to why some new users might be adding duplicate submissions instead of items to their collection.  I realize now the the "Submit New Item" button is directly above your collection on the left side.... so the brain subconsciously thinks this means "add to your collection".

Can we move this button somewhere else... perhaps switch the "Search Database" button with the "submit new item" button... that just makes more sense to me.

Just some food for thought.   ;D
