I'm not going to make edits because it'll just get rejected, but I'll inform folks so maybe Dhaabi can fix it.  All of the PS4 Accessory listings for the 20th anniversary controllers are incorrect in their description

"packaging text in English, French model #: CUH-ZCT1U embossed touchpad with 2, O, X, square, triangle symbols available as a part of the Sony PlayStation 4 20th Anniversary Edition boxed release or as a standalone retail release"

Console release of the controller has the iconography on the touchpad, all standalone retail releases do not have the iconography on the touchpad.  They are different controllers.

So I'm posting this super late, but I'm finally getting around to finishing up writing stuff for last year and building my final stats.

It's the end of the year, so time to build that final stats post.

  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (NS)
  • Atelier Ryza 3 (NS)

Console breakdown
Platform   Count
PC      22
XS      17
X1      12
PS5      11
360      10
NS      9
PSX      7
ARC      5
GBA      5
NES      5
PS4      5
SNES   5
GEN      4
GB      3
N64      2
ZX      2
3DS      1
DOS      1
GBC      1
GG      1
PCE      1

Platform with the Most Beat Games: PC really had a commanding lead this year.  Between Steam Deck, setting up my curator account, and working on backlog stuff in a primarily Steam group, it had a heavy push this year.

Platform with the most unfinished titles: Again I didn't really keep track of abandoned games like last year, I really need to make an effort of keeping track of that somehow... but I think PC probably wins that, as I actually did real good finishing up console games that I started this year.

Current v. Retro v. Mobile/Handheld v. PC v Arcade: 54 - 37 - 11 - 22 - 5. (I am considering anything not PS4/X1/NS/PS5/XS to be "retro").  I considered making ZX and DOS under PC, but I kept it retro, so despite PC's big numbers, modern gaming still has a commanding lead, even retro smashes PC.  I added Arcade as a separate one this year, because I actually played a few arcade games this year and they definitely aren't all retro or modern.

Game that ate up the most time: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom hands down, it had roughly 200 hours logged.  I was thinking about Saints Row because it had nearly 100, but then I remembered TotK came out this year.

Quickest game beat: Another 100 hidden game, 100 hidden birds 2.

  • Best Racing Game: Forza Horizon 5 (XS)
  • Best Puzzle Game: Glass Masquerade (PC)
  • Best Platformer: Super Mario Bros. Wonder (NS)
  • Best RPG: Atelier Ryza 3 (NS)
  • Best Action Game: Lies of P (XS)
  • Best Story: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (NS)
  • Best Soundtrack: Wild Arms/Wild Arms 2 (PS5)
  • Best Shooter: Goldeneye 007 (XS)
  • Best Independent Game: Lies of P (XS)
  • Best Handheld Game: Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice (3DS)
  • Best Xbox Game: Lies of P (XS)
  • Best Playstation Game: Marvel's Spider-Man 2 (PS5)
  • Best Nintendo Game: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (NS)
  • Best PC Game: The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog (PC)

Yeah, the excessively part can make it easy to misinterpret.  Some folks might genuinely feel stick to it, and some might feel it's no pressure to stick to it, but don't send a thousand dollars worth of stuff.

I'm not your mom do what you want, but sending out a thousand dollars worth of stuff, no matter how generous the thought might be, might make the receiver feel guilty for only doing or staying near the limit and it can make the other gifters feel similarly.  I don't think this has really been a problem before on the high end, but it's worth noting that might be the interpretation of excessively.

I will say I have seen in previous years folks not sticking to it as a minimum though.

I started to play the newest (and last) Saints Row game, since it was given free, but I played for an hour or so and it just wasn't feeling great, I know it's been patched up after going through development hell, but it just sorta feels like an outdated, janky, game with a decent character creator.

That got me thinking about how something like Saints Row: The Third still plays, as I had that Remastered version from a few years back, and gotta say...It's not bad.  It's a little old school feeling of course, it's bound to be, but it's not far off from the recent game.  Honestly, Saints Row 2022 feels like it could have come out right around something like Saints Row IV, which was 10 years ago. A real shame as someone who use to really love the series, even when it got with Saints Row IV and Gat Out Of Hell.  It even hit a point with Saints Row 2, where I personally thought it was better than GTA4, a game I think is genuinely not good.

I'll probably keep playing Saints Row: The Third at least for abit, since I haven't played one of these types of games in a long while.
I played it recently and really enjoyed it.  Felt like SR3 to me, which for sure is outdated, but fun.

Mine's going to be real weak because as the days go by, I buy less and less.  I won't get into the whatever of that

In chronological order

1) Death Stranding (PS5)
Got this for like $5 because a store had the PS5 version marked as the PS4 price

2) Call of Duty Vanguard (XS)
Got this for like $3 because a store had the XS version marked as X1

3. WWE 2k23 (XS)
Gamestop had it marked down to like $7, bought two copies, one arrived as the X1 version which traded in for like $20

That's like it.  I got quite a bit this year (looks like I added 151 items to my collection this year, some being items I already had and missed adding, so even less), but nothing really noteworthy.  Lots of stuff free or next to nothing through subsidizing.  Most of my "purchases" this year were steam games, which were all subsidized/free.

bummer, reading about it, it sounds like this year it was actually 20,000$ and 200 transactions.  I could've dumped quite a bit.  Next year is $5k and no transaction limit.

« on: December 27, 2023, 10:46:39 pm »
2023 started me down the "anti-collecting" path and 2024 will seem me continuing this trend.
I understand this is a collecting site.. and I am in no way suggesting others do the same, but as I get older I find the idea of accumulating "things" no longer interests me. Its funny, because while I've been getting rid of all my physical games, and repurchasing the games I actually want to play in a digital format, I also find my wanting to PLAY more games. So with all this said, here are my 3 goals for 2024

1. Finish selling off the rest of my physical collection.
2. Repurchase the select digital games I actually intend on playing and get them cataloged on the site.
3. PLAY MORE GAMES.

That's it, nice and simple.
How are you going about selling things?  I've been thinking about that a lot lately.  I'm at the point that the only games I have out on display are games I actually intend on playing, everything else is boxed away.  So I think about selling off the boxed away stuff (literally thousands of games) but I just don't see any good way to get rid of them.

. Go to local game shop and get pennies on the dollar or less because I would want cash and not store credit
. Sell on ebay, hit the $600 minimum, have to file taxes on the sales, deal with ebay's rising selling costs, shipping costs, potential scammers, and still not be able to sell half of it.
. Sell locally and deal with 99% "Still available? [Yes] Will you take $1 for all of it?"

Same.

I count the game for the year the game is beat.  I've literally counted a game that I beat like 5 minutes after midnight on New Years because that's when I beat it.

bold games are games that have been beaten, previously beaten, or are unbeatable.
italicized games are in progress.
standard games are games I am not currently trying to beat.
strikethrough games are games that have been abandoned.

1. Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered (X1)
Went back to this one again because I needed something I could play in front of my impressionable kid, and this is mostly fine.  I don't remember the grind for level 20 being as annoying in the original, and I certainly don't remember having to play this much online to get all of the achievements.  So I'm not having a terribly good time having to play online, which doesn't earn much xp, or repeatedly playing the same levels over and over to get xp to hit level 20.
Rating: Soft pass

2. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion (PS5)
Been trying to start this one for a while.  Kept booting it up and never starting.  Did the prologue and just didn't come back... and now here I am, trying to play it, and I even took time off work, which partly was going to be used for this, and with this stupid fucking arctic blast I'm dealing with plumbing shit because I don't know what the fuck to do to not have my pipes burst and shit.  Had someone come out today and they super did a temp job and are coming back in a couple of days to weld on a more "permanent solution", and something, I don't know what the fuck it was, did a loud banging noise for like 7 seconds and we have no clue what it was.  Pipes didn't burst because the water main shows no water usage when I turn off dripping faucets, water was dripping not running, so I wouldn't think water hammering is what's happening, my only thought is now something is fucked up with my water heater.  Anyway, I'm on Chapter 2 or 3, I'm really not sure, I'm doing missions which is interesting, especially in the whole doing side quests when there is an uber urgent main mission awaiting my attention.  Played most of the game doing my own thing and not getting too caught up in the game's systems, but then I started getting towards the harder missions and decided to look stuff up, wound up having to look up how to defeat a bunch of duders because they were invulnerable to physical and magic.  Got all the way to the Minerva fight and was just blown away by how BS that fight is.  It's almost RNG to win, but I guess if your stats are just right you can survive anything once so just gotta play right, once I had my stats right I beat it without issue.  Story didn't really answer any questions but just left more, I will say I'm hyped for Rebirth.  It's kinda weird too, I've never been a FF fan, but my wife has, she made me get Remake day one and she played it like crazy, Rebirth is coming out and she doesn't care but I'm hyped.  We'll maybe see if she changes her mind, but she hasn't been about playing games for years at this point.
Rating: Soft recommendation

3. Pokemon Scarlet (NS)
Needed a day time game to play because my kid is too impressionable and I basically can't play anything with violence at all.  Even pokemon is a problem because it has violence which winds up making my kid start hitting me every time the pokemon do anything.  Anyway, this game is pretty awful, like one of the worst pokemon games ever released.  The game crashed multiple times and so much slowdown so frequently.  Game was nearly unplayable at times in handheld mode.  A lot of, if not all, characters seemed, I don't know how to put it other than they seemed like they weren't designed by the Pokemon team.  The entire game feels like it was developed by a western developer.  Again, I don't know how to put it other than that, it just doesn't have any of the same feel as previous Pokemon games, it feels like Game Freak just handed development over to like a 2nd party US Nintendo studio and just let them run with it.  A bunch of stuff makes no sense too, like Toedscool/Toedscruel, why are these new pokemon and not regional variants, and how are they different from these ancient pokemon that are obviously ancestors to current pokemon.  This entire game feels like a fan hack written by a hormonal teenager obsessed with gen 1.
Rating: Soft pass

4. Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name (PS5)
I've had this for a while, but for some reason or another just never got around to it.

5. Simmiland (PC)

Met my goal in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 20202021, 2022, and 2023; with 2021 being 156 games, 2016/2017/2020/2022/2023 being 104 games, and 2018/2019 being 52 games as the goals.  2015 I tracked the info super late and I had another really busy year that year.

2023 saw me spend a lot of time on PC gaming, both in playing games, using sites like Playtracker, Barter, and Steamgifts to get games to play, and working on backlog group stuff on discord groups.  For some reason it also saw me having a really hard time keeping up with my notes on here, using this site in general, and playing less in general.  2022 my kid didn't even start school until August, 2023 my kid was in school full time and for some reason I guess that's making things harder?  I don't know, maybe it's he's older and can do more of what he wants as opposed to just fudging about like a baby/toddler, maybe it's more of I have a lot less I can play in front of him because he's impressionable now, maybe I just don't have time for it because my kid is a handful.  I don't know.  Right now, I'm a bit burnt out after doing a wild double bingo board challenge in December (which ran through Jan 15th) that ended with me "earning" my final bingos, filling out the board, 14 minutes after the deadline, so it didn't count, which is the kind of strict rigid fuckery I'm not about, but I guess also fuck Marvel's Avengers for having such awful RNG that it took over 100 pulls to get a fucking belt, which you'd think would be like 1/4 odds, because there are four gear types.  Anyway, been buying less and trying to play more, but life is stressful and I haven't really played games to play games since like Robocop, so here's hoping I can mange to do that.

General / Re: 2024 Gaming/Collecting Goals
« on: December 24, 2023, 10:59:48 pm »
1. Stay under 8,200 games. - I'm at 8,165, so that really gives me no room to work with, but maybe this goal can convince me to sell stuff?
2. Finish Sonic franchise run. - I still need to get Sonic Superstars, but I'm sure I'll get it by the end of next year.
3. Beat 104 games. -
4. Finish Armored Core franchise run. - I really want to play the new one, but I refuse until I do the franchise
5. Make progress on Assassin's Creed franchise run. -
6. Make progress on Ace Combat franchise run. - This is an AC year I guess
7. Hit top .5% softcore on Retro Achievements. - *gasp* I was under 500 on the ranks, I'm 501 right now.  At least my goal wasn't top 500.
8. Break 250,000 gamerscore on Xbox. - This one might actually be a toughy, I'm at 230,000 right now, but I've been consistently earning over 2k per month, so we'll see.
9. Hit star level 365 on PSN. - Currently 356.  Should be reasonable?
10. Succeed in every season on Playtracker.
11. End the year with a positive progress index on Backloggery
12. Reinventory accessible games. - This is a toughy since most of my stuff is boxed up, but the systems boxed up, I haven't bought new games, so this is a pretty reasonable goal that needs doing
13. Beat a game from every year from year x to 2024. - I didn't actually mark this as a goal this last year, I'm actually 6 games off from the goal and I'm trying to make myself work on it.  I put x because I don't really pick a year from the get go, I pick the year based on whatever the oldest game I play happens to be.

Recap of goals from last year.  Will drop in goals for this year.

Quote

1. Stay under 8,200 games. - Honestly, if GS/Walmart/etc keeps clearancing stuff, I'll fail so hard.
- Success - No chance I'm gonna break 8,200 by the end of the year, so I'm calling this a success.
2. Finish Sonic franchise run.
- Failed - I made some progress to the point I only had 1 game left (Sonic Frontiers), but then a new game came out (Don't own it yet) and I decided to retroactively add a bunch of alternate versions of games I've already beaten to the list, so not gonna happen, but real close.
3. Beat 104 games.
- Success - I'm past 110 games beat so far, so well past succeeded.
4. Start streaming again.
- Failed - I haven't done it yet.  I've been streaming to discord.  I streamed the majority of my playthrough of Lies of P to Discord (which isn't recorded), but it doesn't count.  Streaming really does sully my experience because I feel like I can't play unless I can dedicate at least 30 minutes, which means I wind up not playing at all sometimes.  Lies of P would've been good to stream though.
5. Start Armored Core franchise run.
- Success - Technically, success, because I did start, but once I hit the PS2 games I ran into problems with controls/emulators.  I really want to remap controls, but I can't get any emulator to actually play properly
6. Take new game room pics
- Success  - I'm gonna call this a success, even if for semi-technical reasons.  I merged my game room with my office, so fewer games, but I took pictures once I was done moving games around.
7. Get into the top 1% (softcore) on RetroAchievements (Currently sitting at top 1.23%) - The goal post here keeps sliding, because I hit top 500 already and now I'm pretty close to top 1% will probably hit it in the next couple of days.
- Success - Sitting at 0.88% so I'm good with this.  Next year I think the goal is going to be 0.5%
8. Break 100,000 on Xbox 360 gamerscore (Excludes Xbox One)
- Success
9. End the year with a positive progress index on Backloggery
- Success - Unless fuckery goes on that I'm not aware of, I'm at positive 17 so pretty unlikely that I'll fuck that up with 6 days left in the year.

« on: December 10, 2023, 03:22:28 pm »
It is getting to be that time.  I'll update my post tomorrow hopefully with lots of the same added questions I do every year.

I always look forward to this post every year

Favorite 2023 Release: Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.  Fantastic game, unfortunately it gets a lot of complaints because it's more of the same of Breath of the Wild, which is a fair complaint, but the game is still fantastic even if it didn't move the goal posts again.

Least Favorite 2023 Release: Starfield.  At no point had I been hyped for this game, I'm not big on the sci-fi genre in general, which is a huge reason I never cared for Halo.  But even after release I just never felt the need to spend my time with the game.  I played for an hour or so and I just couldn't get over the fact that the first decision they make you make and you don't have a choice, you must join the foundation or whatever the cult is called.  I will definitely force myself to finish the game at some point, but the game is just horribly mismanaged and does enough to alienate players of previous Bethesda games.

Favorite Game Played in 2023: Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.  It's the top of my list for the year.

Least Favorite Game Played in 2023: Batman Forever (SNES), oh my lawd is this game just absolutely awful.  I almost get anxiety thinking about how awful that game was.

Sleeper Hit of 2023: For games released this year? Lies of P, didn't expect that game to be as good as it was, best non-From Soft Soulslike I've played.  Played in general?  Saints Row.  I heard nothing good about it, people talked shit about it and even after I've played it and Volition got shut down people still shit on the game, but it's honestly one of if not the best entry in the Saints Row series.  I can admit marketing killed the game, but the game is amazing, could've been my GOTY if not for Elden Ring last year, had I played last year.

Favorite Gaming Moment in 2023: Tears of the Kingdom.  Can't really explain, because spoilers, but iykyk based on the title.

Proudest Collection Accomplishment of 2023: None, I've basically gotten out of collecting.  I buy modern stuff I plan on playing and that's about it.  Maybe getting tons of steam games for like nothing?

As usual I'll add some categories

Proudest Gaming Accomplishment in 2023: 100% completing Lies of P.  I'm always proud of beating these tough games, but especially proud when I 100% complete the game.

Favorite Game Revisited in 2023: Goldeneye 007.  Despite it releasing this year on Xbox, I'll consider it a revisit.  100% complete the game in a few days, was an absolute blast to revisit on Xbox with modern controls.  If we don't want to count that because it's new?  Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands  Started replaying this on Xbox recently because I wanted to revisit something, specifically.  Really enjoying my time with it again.
