I've had a few of em early on but I'm glad I broke out of the collection curse real early. they are pretty worthless to me and the costs rack up quick. This is lowkey the smartest dlc in a game ever. People spending over 1K retail on a game withouth feeling bad about it.

It was a pretty interesting time however. I remember during them peak times when amiibo scalping got so bad and you could flip stuff like shulk amiibo's for 100$ etc.

From resellers to retro stores to actual retro collectors everyone was after them wether it was refreshing online or stalking them physical stores.

Meanwhile I was ignoring them and man was the market empty when the good supply entered the market. I got some insane deals for hyped items withouth much competition during those weeks. even things that lasted for 1 day or two including some of the best stuff that would otherwise be gone in an instant.

Scored some of my best snes and sega deals during those few weeks including a pretty minty cib Hagane for cheap Good times  ;D

I'm sure some people on this world dispose of retro stuff cause they hate it. but it's a super minority and it happens with every and anything I wouldn't worry about it.

Crazy folks exist. but it's a more rare scenario with stuff going up in value. so aside from retro fodder that nobody cares about I kinda doubt much of note is getting destroyed these days.

Not Retro but there was this one guy that bought 100's of rosalina amiibo and destroyed them while they where worth a crap ton. That was posted online. The guy was called Mariotehplumber.

For the occasional entertainment vid people destroy a cart/console or 2. DK oldies destroyed a GBA sp IQue on camera once.

Video Game Database Discussion / Re: Mystery Final Fantasy VIII Version
« on: November 25, 2023, 02:31:26 pm »
So I was on Pricecharting filling in / correcting information on games I own when I noticed that the ASIN listed for the original 1999 release of FFVIII was actually the one for the Greatest Hits edition. I changed the information accordingly and then went over to GameFAQs for a higher resolution image of the cover for the display image and also an image for the back of the box. Upon loading the images on GameFAQs I am greeted with this:

This is what GameFAQs considers to be the back cover of the 1999 release of FFVIII. At the time I didn't think anything of it until I decided to change the UPC information on PC to match the UPC on the image; only to discover that the UPC in question belongs to a different game entirely. Specifically: Need For Speed: High Stakes. https://www.pricecharting.com/game/playstation/need-for-speed-high-stakes
Searching the UPC on any sites designed to do so will only bring up NFS, never FF.

After this I think "Huh, that's weird. Who on earth would upload a custom cover to GameFAQs?" Curiosity piqued, I decide to try and find the source of the image. By doing this I find that GameFAQs is not the only place on the internet to think that this is the real back cover, multiple sites are certain that this is the real deal and not a custom cover. Then finally, after digging a little further I come across this page: https://www.tokopedia.com/incursio/kaset-cd-game-playstation-ps-1-psx-final-fantasy-8-isi-4-disc?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=pdp-seo
Which has a physical copy of the game with the image in question UPC and all on full display.

The product also shows custom discs, and a custom cover. Is this some sort of version of the game that isn't recorded? Or am I retarded and someone in a 3rd world country is just trying to sell their cool customized version of the game?

Gotto say pretty fun to see the 2ndary game market in a 2nd/3rd world county, allot of fake stuff but also some sellers with allot of quality legit retro items, ye just don't expect it.

Also while there was allot of fake stuff. there where quite some usa snes consoles for pretty cheap prices, so that's pretty interesting I'd say.

Cool stuff.

Mainly cause of the database being nice but also because of playstation age kinda dying especially the latter made me talk in this forum instead of just using the database. Was a pretty fun small european collecting scene that wasn't just about playstation.

In terms of a gamer I've become more openminded to give more kinds of games a shot compared to what I'd want to play in the past.

At the start when I collected I didn't really have a barrier in what I wanted to collect. But I've definitely made my barriers over the years. Nothing prior to nes/gameboy classic. and pretty much very casually past wii/3ds. I don't really care past those boundries mainly just for the gameplay if I want to play it for modern stuff.

In terms of collecting, collecting definitely ain't what it used to be. investing less time into it these days but good stuff at good prices still pop up from time to time.

I think I lost some of my collecting spirit when I scored a cib alien soldier which was one of my main goals to complete the collection. That is when I pretty much had everything that I really wanted. Felt pretty satisfying when I finally scored that one but also a bit empty at the same time. Collecting has never been the same since covid. What a world of difference it has been in a bad way.

There are quite some other differences for me as a collector now compared to me in the past. Past me would only add stuff for free or for really cheap rarely past 10$. Nowadays if it's a really good price I'll have a decent chunk at a loss with a smile if it's something I want. also in some cases in which I might just buy for good money If I really really want it, still rarely though.

I do wish I was less of a cheap skate sooner cause I missed out on some really cool games for already great deals at the time that way, which now are way more pricy. that being said I only really regret missing out on deals that I pretty much had in my hands busy talking with the owner etc/ had a shot at actually buying before anyone else. being the 2nd guy is kinda pointless imo you didn't miss it you just weren't fast enough in that scenario and thus would never have gotten that deal. also if I didn't even consider it at the time I also don't regret missing out on it even if it was an amazing deal at the time. there was no shot at me buying it than. I would need to be something that I actually considered/almost wanted to buy at the time.

Another thing that changed is that I'm willing to forgive a game not having 100% of the paper work since you can always complete it later as long as you got the box in excellent shape. Finally if it's something quite rare and good and it was super cheap I'm willing to accept german or usa cib versions in excellent shape. Which I wish I did sooner.

Had stuff like a usa megaman IV gameboy or usa metal slug 2nd mission in cib shape multiple times for quite cheap. only sold them for the sake of them not being the version that I seeked but the deals where already paid for by other stuff of said sets. I wish I would have kept those as some examples.

It has been quite a ride overall. In general quite the same as I was in the past Albeit in a less active and picky degree.

Pretty underrated I'd say, He did lose his channel in the past but he has re uploaded most things again. he also got his new channel but them subs and views are all gone. The best stuff is in the archives channel I'd say.

It's about old movies and when it's about games it's usually about sega, The puppet style with them jokes makes for a unique viewing experience.

Site Feedback / Re: Rejected edits and site advancement

So from my understanding you have an issue that some games allow for the stylistic choice on the cover in the alt name department.

Like Mega Man X³  While others with stylistic choices are normal as usual. and you want everything to just ignore the style since you'd otherwise have to do it for all. There is no reason why games such as Mega Man X3 should be an exception in your eyes.

I think in the case of X3 it's done cause it's quite an ez one to do withouth actually altering the name, on top of it looking nice/fun. It doesn't seem that deep. If it's ez enough withouth butchering the true name it can't hurt I'd say. It will stay the exact same while adding a bit of flair, I can see why it was an exception to the rule.

Let's be real aside from it looking nice X³ to X3 changes literally nothing. The number just looks a tad different but it's still the same number at the very end of the day, hence why they probably did it. This isn't some alternate symbol to replace a letter/number it's the exact same thing. If you can make a stylistic choice for the alt name and it literally changes nothing It's fine I'd say. X3 fits the criteria for this.

Classic Video Games / Re: Top 50 Sega Game Gear Games
« on: November 08, 2023, 06:54:01 am »
I have never seen one in Europe, I wonder if it was less popular than the mastersyster :o

Game gear in general or just certain games for it?

I see game gear just a bit less often than master system but still plenty. difference between the 2 is however that there is allot less interesting stuff for it. allot of the same stuff usually compared to other consoles. Seems like quite a limited library even if you include all the fodder.

Fairly sure you just got a european cartridge.

Having pal releases in the usa does happen, opposite aswell.

Hardware and Tech / Re: Saturn Laser Going Bad?
« on: September 23, 2023, 09:13:18 am »

If the laser was starting to go, wouldn't it struggle to read all games and audio CDs, not just this one particular game?

Not really, take ps2 for example. if the laser goes bad, dual layered discs like rogue galaxy or blue/purple discs are the first ones that won't be playable anymore. or ps1 games are also one of the earlier things to go. Anything else would just work fine for quite some time until the laser degrades even more.

Some games are easier to read than others, I've heard for say dreamcast shenmue is one of those games that's the first one that becomes unplayable if the laser degraded to a certain point.

also to be fair you had quite the small selection of games, if you had more, there would have probably been more games that wouldn't work than just the 1 for very simular reasons.

even with cartridge based systems this is a thing. If game uses more special effects it might be glitchy on a snes motherboard that is going bad.

R-type III, pocky & rocky dk country as some examples

will however work perfectly fine with most games that don't do anything special. so might go unnoticed for quite some folks until you use a game that actually has more going on.

no signs of disc rot when I put the disc in front of a bright light. Only thing I noticed was a VERY small piece of the reflective layer was missing by the center of the disc.

CD can't have disc rot. Disc rot only happened with discs that have two protective layers like LaserDiscs, DVDs and HD-DVDs. CDs do not have disc rot. It can have damage to the reflective layer, which if this occurs within the data area it means the disc could be toast. The CD mechanism has the ability to error correct for scratches but it cannot handle any portion where the reflective layer is missing.

Disc rot mainly happens at the factory. if it was a bad batch it will happen soon. if it was pressed properly the odds of disc rot are so rare, gotto store it pretty poorly where them naturaly elements go wild for it to happen than.  it doesn't really pop up out of nowhere.

General / Re: Would you replace a Greatest Hits/Reprint game?
« on: September 11, 2023, 03:41:14 pm »
Just curious what you all think about this. If you had a reprint version of one of your favorite games, like Greatest Hits/Platinum/Player's Choice/Nintendo Selects, would you consider replacing it with the original version? Or would that be too overkill? How high on the priority list would that be for you to do?

I have a bunch of games I really love but unfortunately they are Greatest Hits versions that I acquired when I was younger. I really hate seeing that red strip on my shelf because I can't decide how to organize them (separate them from the black labels or do the whole set alphabetically?). It's genuinely such an eyesore. I'm honestly considering selling them and getting black label copies instead.

I won't even consider keeping platinum/greatest hits versions so I don't really have the option to replace it if I never own it in the first place.

I have one exception, my childhood copy of smash melee but I don't think that's in the same realm since there is allot of nostalgia and memories attached to that original copy. but in that case I now just own both, got a platinum and scored an original release years later. but that's a very wild exception however. wouldn't have a platinum release otherwise.

I might consider hanging on to a plat release if it was an exclusive from another country I guess, since I wouldn't be able to play the game for cheap otherwise so it would have to be something interesting that I had to come across for very cheap. ye can't be to picky in that case since your odds of finding it at a good price are low. but than again in that case, I would probably not be able to replace it.

The one piece live action looks to uncanny to me. I agree that it looks to cosplay but not in a proffesional good way, but than again I find it hard to imagine how you'd do it otherwise, even with improved budget it would probably not look that much different considering how crazy the original is.

Visuals wise the characters that got hit the hardest are the more monstrous characters. Stuff like buggy is nice though but that's a rare exception. Overall though the show to me is in the cheesy so bad it's good category. It looks ridiculous in a funny way, But I don't feel I can compare it to the original it's just to much of a downgrade for me.

Ironicly I feel that characters like zorro felt more like the character in interviews than in the actual show  ::)

But as a one piece fan it's cool to see people enjoy it.

One Piece (Live Action) -
Story hits all the major story beats it needs to, there are definite shortenings, and some changes, characters not included, but this has to happen, they can't follow the anime exactly, or even the manga, it would be way too many episodes and unrealistic, but the story does what it needs to and that's what matters most.  I've seen some folks rag on the differences, but I think some people are just unwilling to admit that some stuff has to be different to make it work as a live action show.  Personalities have to be dialed down, things tweaked, characters and moments dropped that we really liked for the sake of a snappier, better paced story.

it's natural for it to be somewhat different but they didn't condense it as much as I thought

ye had 1035 minutes of the anime condensed into 480 minutes which is pretty much 50% which is quite a bit of content still allot more than I expected.

If they do plan to continue this live action route. I think it wouldn't be a bad idea to cut some of the more monstrous or animal characters perhaps even some main ones like chopper or brook. I don't think those would do the live action much good. Seems like a nightmare to work with to make it decent looking
