Modern Video Games / Re: Play-Asia experiences
« on: August 19, 2015, 07:13:04 pm »
I've had great experience with them. Only once did I have to wait on a restock. Everything else has been on time whether it was a pre-order or had been out for some time. I can say you'll need to wait about a week before it gets to you unless you pay more for shipping.

I've bought

Final Fantasy X-2 HD Remaster (Asia, No Region Protection)
Rune Factory Oceans (Europe, No Region Protection)
Atelier Bundle Vol. 1 (Europe, No Region Protection) - Arland Trilogy
Atelier Rorona Plus: The Alchemist of Arland (US, No Region Protection)
Valkyria Chronicles II (PSP Essentials) (Europe, No Region Protection)
Genkai Totsuki Moero Chronicle (Chinese & English Sub) (Asia, No Region Protection)
Short Peace: Ranko Tsukigime's Longest Day (Europe, No Region Protection)
Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines (English) (Asia, No Region Protection)
Steins;Gate (Europe, No Region Protection)
Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment (Chinese & English Sub)

I had a few others, but that's all that's listed anymore.

FYI, Summon Night 6 was just announced to be in development for the PS4 & Vita. No word on a localization yet, but it seems to me that most PS4 JRPGs are getting localized these days so the odds are probably pretty good. :)

I get excited every time I see a new JRPG released on PS4 and Vita. My Vita collection is growing by the month...would be by the week, but my wife seriously limits my binge spending. Someone linked this from cheapassgamer.com earlier.

Round 2 of the UMD designs are up now. As of now, they're pretty close to even in terms of retweets. The one on the right is winning by two at the moment.

I voted for the one on the left. I'm a fan of alternate gaming artwork. I hate to admit it, but I'm a sucker for anything Limited Release, so more than likely will be buying anything these guys release.

Phantasy Star III - Was probably the worst of the series as far as storyline, and character growth, but was the first RPG I really got into and played to the end. My mother bought this for me at a place called Software Etc during a random visit to our local Mall. It was in the bargain bin for $14.99. I had to agree to not ask for anything else for awhile, and not gripe when it came to chores. As straight forward as any RPG of its time. You'd recruit people for a common goal to kill some boss terrorizing the land, and then would have a choice of two women to marry at the end of each generation. Depending on who you chose, you'd get any number of characters and storylines. Two faithful cyborgs were by your side the entire trip. I can't say I'll ever go back and play this again, but my heart holds a fond place for this game as it introduced me to RPGs, and it kept me busy while I saved up money for FF6, and a SNES.

Final Fantasy VI - I can't say enough about this game. I'm one of those old guys who rants and raves about this one. If PSIII was the first RPG I played start to finish, FFVI was the first I completed. My first glance into this game was at my friend's house for a sleepover. He had just gotten it and was only a few hours into the initial scenario split from the Returner's meeting. I was immediately hooked. I guess you can say this was the reason I purchased PSIII. My first play through was 60+ hours. There wasn't a part of the map I didn't investigate. I bought gaming magazines that had tips & tricks, game art, whatever I could fine. Every year I still play this game at least once.

Chrono Trigger - This was the first game I had ever anticipated. I never really was an avid gamer until I bought a SNES. I started seeing advertisements in magazines for this new "Squaresoft" game coming out. Much like PSIII, I found this game and begged my mom to buy it for me as a Christmas gift. If she bought me that game, I wouldn't ask for anyone else. I meant it, too. She reluctantly agreed, and sure enough, it was my main gift, though, I did get other things. Sadly, I wasn't the perfect son as I located where she hid the game and put about 4 hours into it before feeling guilty and putting it back...after deleting my save. I don't go back and play CT as much as FFVI, but I do revisit it often. Most recently last year. I've seen every ending, and all of the extra cutscenes you can setup. SEE: Saving Lucca's mom. This will forever be in my top 2 games of all time. Chrono Trigger, and Final Fantasy VI helped me through some dark middle school times of my life. I wasn't a tragically bullied kid, and had a wonderful home life, but these games allowed for me an escape.

The Legend of Zelda - I never have beaten this game, and to be honest, I watched my brother play this far more than I ever will. My first gaming system was a NES. I couldn't tell you how excited my 8-year old self was whenever I saw this unwrapped. I had my very own NES...I just didn't have a TV. So I either played this on the livingroom tv, which was normally kicked off by my sister, or my brother's tv, which was normally him playing. I watched him play this from start to finish. Witnessing every battle, every boss, and seeing Ganon vanquished. The final dungeons music still creeps me out. I can't think back on my childhood and not think of my brother playing this.

Sonic the Hedgehog - If I could go back, I would have asked for an SNES rather than a Genesis. Of course, I can't say I didn't enjoy the crap out of Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic was the first side-scroller I had ever beaten. And beaten. And beaten. I only had about six games for Genesis and they were mostly sports games. So Sonic was something I could zone out into and play for hours. He was the mascot for Sega, and went head to head with Mario for a time.

Honorable Mentions - Joe Montana's Sports Talk Football, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy 8, Xenogears.

FF7, FF8, and Xenogears could have easily been on my list, but the ones listed were responsible for directing me to these games.

I completely flubbed on the Saturn Dreamcast part, lol. The Dreamcast, by far, had the worst controller setup of all the consoles I ever played.

This is one of those questions that the answer is going to be very biased per person. Most of us have a certain timeline where we got into gaming and that's normally about the time we're going to see as the best gaming generation. If you look back, every few years whenever the new gen consoles are released. I'd say the best time is when the competition started to heat up. I started really gaming with Sega Genesis/SNES/TurboGrafx-16/Neo-Geo. Right after that is when the the PlayStation, N64, and Sega Saturn were released. I think that's when competition really picked up and the console wars started.

My vote would go to the 6th gen as gf78 mentioned. The 128-bit era gave us the PS2, Xbox, GameCube, and the Sega Saturn was still a legitimate machine. That's when I really started seeing competition between the companies and them jockeying for games exclusives. Before, it was primarily developers releasing games per console as they were paid. Seems like, at this time, is when bidding wars started for developer's services.

I think any gens 4th, and on, could all be argued to be the best ones to be alive during.

Strangely enough, the biggest scare/jump I ever got from a game happened to be from my most favorite game of all time. I remember getting Final Fantasy 6 December of 1994. Of course, this meant I got to play my brains out during the Christmas holiday. I was 13 years old and had all the time in the world. Anyone familiar with FF6 is familiar with the scene that follows the fight with Kefka in Narshe. It was about 3am and the sound was up on my tv. I watched with anticipation as the Returners approach the frozen esper...then in the silence, Terra turns into an epser and lets out a shriek that made me jump, and fall out of my chair. MY tv was up louder than I realized. It was safe to say, my room being located above my parent's room promptly woke them and I was in bed soon after. To this day,  still cringe with the memory when I replay that game. It's my all-time #1 game, and that's my all-time jumpy moment.

There's one game that I have to look up and remind myself of the name, EVERY year, at least once. That game is, "MegaRace." I remember playing the crap out of this game on my Aunt's Windows 3.1 PC. No matter how much I played it, I could only get to a certain track and then would lose. One of these days I'm going to fire an emulator up and beat it.

This guy was creepy.

Cool idea! Mine might be a tough one. This one was from a top down view and you played as a cockroach or some similar kind of insect. It was basically an action/puzzle hybrid as you had to make your way through some kind of dirty garbage heap. The setting was really dark and creepy, the graphics were pretty realistic for its time (early to mid 90ies), the background music consisted of primitive dark ambient/noise, like Fallout but even more stripped down. Scenes I remember: rummaging through a crushed/bloody dead rat, the first boss fight was a spider you had to lure into a lit cigarette butt to kill. As a kid this game royally freaked me out and I couldn't sleep afterwards. Now I still think about it sometimes as it was a pretty interesting and unique concept. I don't know the exact format but I'm 100% sure it was a PC type, either DOS/early Windows or Amiga.
Never heard about this game again so I don't think it was popular at all.

Was i possibly a game called "Bad Mojo?"

I've gotten to where my "awe" turns into "awe hell am I going to play all of these?" I've been slowly going through them in recent months, though my purchasing has slowed considerably since I realized that I don't have to try and buy EVERY release that comes out.

Plus, getting married and sharing a bank account with my wife makes it harder to just buy whatever I want.

This is the only one of my "Big 3" (FFIII, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana) I still need to get a cart for. Which is unfortunate, because Chrono Trigger is always swapping the #1 spot w/ Final Fantasy III. I do own it for the PS1 and DS though, as well as the OST, so that's a plus.

I think this is one of the first games I can remember discovering it having different endings too, which blew my young mind.

I imported a copy from Japan.  It looks nearly new.  There is just something about the Super Famicom games.  I love the way they look, the art, the shape and size of the boxes...I also really like the original Famicom boxes.  They are so tiny compared to their NES counterparts.

I agree, I own Final Fantasy 4,5, and 6 for the Super Famicon and sometimes will just pop them out just to look at the box art. I like that some games are coming out with the reversible box art so you can have the alternate art.

Seeing Chrono Trigger being 20 years old makes me feel ancient, lol. Of course I'm 34 now and can remember playing that game non-stop. Kills me now that I'm an adult, I have all of these games to play and can't decide, but when I was 14 I had four games and played them like mad. I think Chrono Trigger was the first game I started playing and beat it all ways possible without stopping or playing another game as a buffer.

Chrono Trigger was the first game I actually read about and bought gaming magazines just to get a few pages of info or pictures. I never was much of an RPG fan until a good friend introduced me to Final Fantasy 6 aka III on the SNES. I was immediately hooked and actually saved up any money I could scrape together to buy a SNES and FFVI. This, of course addicted me to RPGs, and Square games in general for awhile.

During Christmas shopping the next year, my mom and I happened to be in Best Buy where I saw my holy grail, Chrono Trigger for sale. I begged and begged my mom to buy it for me. She did, but only as a Christmas gift, which was a solid month and a half/two months away. Being a 14 year old, RPG addicted, teen, I found where she had stashed the game. So I swapped it for my copy of FFVI, and played all the way to the future where you meet Robo...This was normally when I got home from school, and before she got home. An hour or so at a time. I ended up feeling guilty about breaking our deal and deleted my save.

Christmas break came, and I finally got my game, per our deal...I played it for 17 hours straight before I passed out. I still own that game, box, guide, posters and all.

I'm going to have to go with the Halo series. Granted, I'm not a huge fan of FPS games and a lot of it has to do with I don't like playing online very much, but it kills me sometimes how unrelentingly some of the Halo fanboys/girls can be. My coworker, and friend, speaks like it's the gospel of all gaming. I've played them, but I usually end up getting bored after an hour or so and just can't seem to keep up a good gaming pace.

I also have to mention that I'm a big Gears of War series fan, and a lot of Halo fans dog on it as well.

I was in the middle of playing Stella Deus whenever I found out that my cousin had passed away. Not trying to be a downer, but that game allowed me to be focused on something else and like folks have mentioned here, it never got a lot of love.

Another game I always wished they released more DLCs for, or a sequel was Lost Odyssey. I spoke to more people who had something negative to say, then good. I found it to be absolutely great and would have 100% achievements if not for the treasure trove AP, lol.
