« on: October 21, 2016, 10:08:23 am »
Just want to say that there seems to be an old 200 edits badge with a broken link; I found it on somebody's profile this morning.

Happy Friday! :)

Bought a GameCube case from him. Was excellent in communication and providing pictures and tracking information. The item was shipped very fast and was packaged excellently. I have no complaints!  :)

Site Feedback / "Submit New Item" Button Dissapears with Shelf View
« on: May 01, 2016, 10:31:32 am »
As the title says, the "submit new item" button is gone for me when I view my collection in shelf mode. It's also gone when I view my/other people's profile.

It comes back if I'm viewing a list of games through browse, etc. Or when I change my collection back to normal view. Is this the case with anyone else?

Thanks :)

Video Game Database Discussion / Naming Japanese Games
« on: April 25, 2016, 04:20:32 pm »
NOTE: The following is a discussion on naming Japanese games within the database. Please refer to post 16, as it outlines the most current rules we decided on. The remaining topic is used as reference so people can see what was discussed, and there we some changes from my original post.

Original Post

This is a rather long post so beware!

There seems to be a lot of inconsistency among how Japanese games are named in the database, and the style guide, while helpful in some respects, could use some more information about how to go about doing this. An admin suggested that I make a topic about it to discuss how we go about naming games so it’s consistent and makes sense to everyone. Then hopefully the style guide can be updated when everyone is on the same page.

Here’s what the style guide says already:
Quote
Use the item's regional release title, written in the language written on the case, but in the Latin alphabet (the letters we commonly use). If the title is in Japanese, use the most recognized transliteration.

This definition seems a little vague, especially when there is more than one language on the case.

Here's the problem:
The game used in the style guide as a reference is Dragon Quest VIII. They use a mix of English and Japanese in the database title when naming it: http://vgcollect.com/item/42695
Dragon Quest VIII: Sora to Umi to Daichi to Norowareshi Himegimi

However, Dragon Quest VIII has a full Japanese name on the case as well, so you could also argue that it should be the full transliterated Japanese name instead, according to the style guide, which would look like this:
Doragon Kuesuto VIII: Sora to Umi to Daichi to Norowareshi Himegimi

Because the example uses the first option, it would *appear* that English is given priority when it is on the case in conjunction with Japanese. However, this is not explicitly stated in the style guide. So I've seen games that are all over the place in how they're named. In addition, there are no examples that are all in English or all in Japanese either on the style guide.

So, I'm proposing that the guide be updated to say:

Use the item's regional release title, written in the language written on the case, but in the Latin alphabet (the letters we commonly use). (Kept the same)
+ All English words on the title game box are carried over to the title used in the database. Any Japanese words that are not in English as well on the box are transliterated. (Whether it's part of the title like DQVIII or the whole name of the game)

This method makes sense, because:
1.) We’re still using the title that’s on the box, and maintains the integrity of the name of the release. If the game is written with Japanese, it should have some iteration of Japanese in the title.
2.) It still makes it somewhat easy to search for things as some games will still have English in the title.
3.) It makes things consistent among all games, as we’re not deciding which language to keep or ignore on the box or which title is most recognized.
4.) It's generally what the games in the database are like already, so we don't need to change much

I’m going to put some examples below in a separate post, what do you think guys? Does this make sense? Post your thoughts and put some examples of games that we should look at. I want to hear what you guys think because there's probably something that I missed :)

I bought a game from scarface and it just game in today. Communication with him was a little slow, but the game arrived very quickly, was packaged beautifully, and he threw in some candy as a freebie! Very pleasant transaction and overall process, would definitely buy from him again. :)

General / Games with odd content ratings
« on: December 13, 2015, 10:08:48 pm »
So we all know how modern games have content ratings (E, T, M, for ESRB, etc.), but I was thinking about some of the weird/wrong ratings that have been put out on games over the years. Some of them might have been too lax or too harsh. Are there any games that you think got the wrong rating on release?

One for me in particular was Ace Combat 04: Always made me wonder how it could get an E rating when you shot people out of the skies in jet aircraft. All the other Ace Combat games afterward got a T rating, so I think they got it right after that. Also how Earthbound was K-A on release, but was changed to T when it was re released for the WiiU. That was an interesting change.

What do you guys think?

General / Donating to an archive
« on: September 29, 2015, 10:53:02 am »
So, I think I may have mentioned this before, but my college has a video game archive, and I go there every so often to get a taste of some rarer and more expensive games that I'm interested in, or to just goof around. Anyway, they take donations, so I thought it would be fun to donate a game there! I found and bought a game that they didn't have, which was this:

Not an expensive/rare game by any means, but like I said they didn't have it, so I went ahead and donated it today. It was very cool to give it to them and have them put it on the shelf with the other PS2 games, and it's nice to know that it's going to be a part of a large standing collection for a long time. It was a cool feeling, and I just thought I would share :). I hope lots of people play it!

On the shelf, way up at the top row...

With all the other modern games, from afar....

gf78 mentioned this in the general topic but I thought I would post a thread to make sure others can take a look at it. Sony is having a big sale with up to 60-70% off until Sept 14, 2015.
Here's the link to the list of 122 games on sale.

Video Game Database Discussion / PS1/2 Classics
« on: August 25, 2015, 01:35:48 pm »
I mentioned this a while ago in the Duplicate listings thread, but I don't think it got resolved/it got buried, so I'm going to list it as a separate topic so more people can put eyes on it.

I think some people get confused that PS1 Classics have their own separate category, for example, and so will list the game under the broad PSN category instead, sometimes for multiple PSN platforms. This will lead to a listing in multiple categories.

Here are some examples:
Breath of Fire IV
http://vgcollect.com/item/30738 - PS1 Classics
http://vgcollect.com/item/80716 - PSN PS3

Capcom vs. SNK - Mark of the Millennium 2001
http://vgcollect.com/item/64804 - PS2 Classics
http://vgcollect.com/item/53619 - PSN PS3

Final Fantasy VII
http://vgcollect.com/item/18274 - PS1 Classics
http://vgcollect.com/item/61272 - PSN Vita
http://vgcollect.com/item/61275 - PSN PS3

I feel like these are dupes, but if there is any way to download PS1/2 games without going through the PS1/2 Classics hub, perhaps they should be kept separate? I don''t know if that's possible or not: what do you guys think?

Site Feedback / Receiving additional edit approvals
« on: August 15, 2015, 07:19:39 pm »
Sometimes when I submit an edit for an item, I receive an additional edit approved notification for the "box text" when I didn't edit that field. I think it happens most often when I'm submitting artwork, like for the disc/cart, etc. I don't know if this happens because of a bug or some other reason, but I thought I would mention it. In the end I don't suppose it's a big deal.

Thanks!

So, I was planning on adding a game to the database (Megaman Battle Network 2) which was released on the virtual console this past January. I was confused however, whether to submit the game under the Virtual Console or the WiiU eShop [NA], and was wondering if someone knew what the difference was when classifying entries. I'd like to submit some more games but I'm not sure how to do it.

I didn't see an entry for either platform, so I ended up submitting MMBN2 under the eShop designation. Maybe if I had a WiiU I would know a little better about VC, etc.

Thanks! :)

Off Topic / Summer Stories/Trips 2015
« on: June 29, 2015, 07:57:45 am »
Now that the summer is about a month in (sad :( ), are there any cool things that you've done or trips have you've been on?

I just went on vacation to Myrtle Beach... 14 hour drive ugh. The beach was really great and the water was superrr warm which I was not expecting because I used to go to the Atlantic in Cape Cod or NH, but it was very nice. If only the water wasn't salty  :o

I also did a bridge walk in WV which was fun, it's under the New River Gorge Bridge, which is about 850 feet above the ground. We had hook ups and rappelling stuff, but it wasn't too scary. We took pictures and I'll try to find one of me maybe. The scenery was really nice. I miss the mountains haha
