Video Game Database Discussion / Re: Recent Additions to Database
« on: February 22, 2016, 09:27:58 pm »
I've been going through the Nintendo DS collection to replace any covers with RP, bad quality, or missing cover art.

Just went through the Imagine series.  As a girl and a DS lover, I'm kind of traumatized.

If you are referring to the NDS [NA] section, don‘t loose heart. I’ve been tidying it up, so have another look. Currently, there are only 3 game images that need to be put up. The stock image is very different from the true image of these games:

Imagine: Salon Stylist - RP image
http://vgcollect.com/item/73092

Strawberry Shortcake: Strawberryland Games - RP image
http://vgcollect.com/item/11116

Let’s Play Flight Attendant - no image
http://vgcollect.com/item/25610

Grrr! There is one user that created many 100’s of these games years ago but never contributed any data. There are an additional one or two users who have most of those games in their collections. They evidently don’t feel the need to contribute data either.  >:(

Anyway, I love this section and will continue to improve it, but for now, I need a break.

Have a nice day!  :)

Why do some users feel compelled to create a game’s data several months before its actual release and include the unofficial image? Is it a lack of self control? A desire to boost their edit numbers? Maybe that’s why we amass so many ESRB-RP images that end up being overlooked. It also causes confusion, at least for me. I thought I had missed a couple of releases, but as it turns out, they still haven’t released. And those examples were created in VGCollect several months ago! Anyway, after a day of editing, I tend to get a bit cranky, and I was just wondering about this.

Video Game Database Discussion / Re: Category/Platform Requests
« on: February 06, 2016, 12:21:39 am »
And lastly, time to split up the PC [NA] section like the older micros are done.
- PC 5.25" Diskette [NA]
- PC 3.5" Diskette [NA]
- PC CD-ROM [NA]
- PC DVD-ROM [NA]
At least for [NA] to start and do the same for other countries later. For ease of use, you would probably just rename PC [NA] to PC CD-ROM [NA] and add the other 3 sections as empty categories to move the appropriate items into.

Didn't any PC games utilize the 8-inch floppy? What category does a PC game fall under that came packaged with both 5.25 & 3.5-inch disks? There were many during the diskette-size transition period. I would like to know since I haven't entered my PC games yet.

Site Feedback / Shoot-’Em-Up Subgenre Confusion
« on: February 03, 2016, 07:48:24 pm »
There seems to be some confusion as to what defines a “Shoot-’Em-Up” game. I’m writing because I recently received another unwarranted edit rejection of this genre. In the last 10-15 years, new Shoot-’Em-Up games are created much less frequently than in previous years, and yet I see this subgenre incorrectly given to too many games. Here is an excellent explanation as to which games should be assigned to this subgenre:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoot_%27em_up

Wikipedia also has in-depth explanations with historical context for all the video game genres/subgenres. These articles will be very helpful anytime someone feels uncertain about a genre. Users just interested in game history will find a lot in there too. Depending on what genre you’re searching for, you may have to start typing “video game” after the genre name before it shows in the drop-down list.

While you’re at it, I suggest checking out the definitions for “Adventure”, “Survival Horror”, “Simulation”, “Beat-‘Em-Up”, and “Platform”. I see a lot of misunderstanding about those also, ESPECIALLY “Adventure” and “Beat-‘Em-Up.”

Usually I just shake my head and give up, but I thought I would try a post this time. In a few days, I’m going to resubmit the rejected data and see what happens.  :(

Other than being a retailer, what usefulness does this date serve? I may be missing the point, but off the top of my head, I can't think of one.

Site Feedback / Re: ESRB-RP Images
« on: January 24, 2016, 05:39:12 pm »
I think sometimes people will put up a RP image prior to the game's release because they want to add the item record to the database. Going back and replacing those after release, however, may be forgotten or ignored until another user notices and switches it out.  As far as I can tell, the admin aren't super strict on what image is in there as long as it's not watermarked. Eventually someone comes by to edit it to something better.

The mods have enough to do without checking on every image in the database - I believe it's mainly other users going through and changing those things.  When I do an audit of my collection, I'll try to check for those things and submit what edits I can.  It's always a work in progress of course :)

You make all great points, but I never implied that the mods check for these images. That's our job.  :)

Site Feedback / ESRB-RP Images
« on: January 24, 2016, 05:17:19 pm »
ATTN: Administrators

What is your protocol for dealing with posted NA game images with the ESRB-RP (rating pending) logo? To me they violate the rules, but I need administrative confirmation. Also, I would like all of you to be on board with this decision because, not so long ago, one of you rejected a correct image (and meeting all criteria) to replace an RP one. To avoid confusion, I'm just asking for a ruling and have no other expectations on this matter.*

Recently, I did an image audit for the NDS [NA] section and have a list of the ones that are either non-NA or RP. This was about 3% of the total, and of those, 64% were RP! I will post this list when you settle this matter. When I have time, I plan on doing this for other game types that I’m very familiar with.

On another subject, I would like to recommend that an optional-use field be added to the edit page that could be used by the item editor/creator to cite sources or reasons for certain data entries/changes. Of course this field would be invisible on the item’s display view. I hate having to use the Alt-Name field for this purpose, and because the actual comment is rejected (removed), it adds to my rejection tally. I don’t know, but you guys might keep track a user’s rejection count. Also, I believe a great number of users would appreciate such an addition. Speaking as a former (retired) programmer by profession, this change shouldn’t be difficult to implement.

By the way, does EVERY member of the VGCollect staff read every original post in this “Site Feedback” section? I often wonder about that.

Keep up the great work!
