In my region we have various Facebook pages where people give away free stuff. People simply put whatever they have on there, if you want it you can comment on it, and after a while the poster announces a winner. A few days ago someone posted a box filled with CD-ROMS. I commented, and I won. It was a big hassle getting it home by bike, but I now have it!

Most of the software is for Windows 95. A lot of it was either burned at home, or was for educational use (like Encarta). There were also a ton of burned copies from a series named 'Twilight'. I never heard of it, but apparently it's a collection of multiple PC games? I don't know.
After going through it, along with some other software discs, I got these games (all of them original and not burned at home):

  • AIRLINES
  • Verover de Oudheid (Ancient Conquest)
  • Exciting Moments of Nature: Videopuzzles
  • FlipperMania: 4 Verschillende Flipperkasten op uw PC (FlipperMania: 4 Different Pinball Machines on your PC)
  • Legpuzzels 3: voor de kids vanaf 4 jaar (Jigsaw Puzzles 3: for the kids ages 4 and up)
  • Looney Tunes: Back in Action (promotional CD-ROM) [NL] 2x
  • NASCAR Racing
  • PC-Gamehits! vol. 34: Platypus
  • PC-Gamehits! vol. 10: Waveball
  • Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc (promotional Demo disc)
  • Redline Racer
  • Road Rash
  • Screamer
  • Top 60 Racing

Clearly the previous owner was a fan of racing games. I gave all the burned copies and other discs I didn't want to my grandma. She frequently has some creative afternoons with retired elders where they craft all kinds of stuff. You'll be surprised what nice things you can make with two CDs pasted together. :)
In the meanwhile, I now have 14 Windows 95 games to try out. I just finished my exams, so I have some time to kill. Perfect timing!

Modern Video Games / Re: Disney Infinity discontinued.

This drop in consumer interest isn't just limited to Disney Infinity and Skylanders. Intertoys, one of the largest toy store brands in the Netherlands, recently dropped the prices on all amiibo from €15,99 to €7,99. And while they advertise this as a discount on their website, the regular stores treat it like it's the regular price. This has also been the price for a few weeks now, so I think they dropped the price permanently. I honestly haven't checked the prices on Skylanders, Disney Infinity or Lego Dimensions, since I don't care about those series. And while other stores have been lowering prices (they go on bol.com, the largest online warehouse in the country, for 10-16 euros on average), this is the first huge price drop that I've seen.

Good on ya.  I'm a positively ancient old fart (30 years this year...there's literally nothing older ever), so my first proper console was the Nintendo 64, but we were gifted a NES in 1990, so I've been playing Nintendo since the beginning.  It's why many of my top ten games are N64 related.  Cool to see the young folk who never grew up in an era of "bits" diving back into the old classics.

Same reason why most of my favourites are still on Wii and DS. It's what I grew up on, it's what I experienced the most of, and of course it's nostalgia. But as a huge Nintendo fan, of course I'd go back to the classics. And more often than not, older games are still a lot of fun to play today (either from Nintendo or in general). I started with the Wii, but I still love me a round of Tetris, Pac-Man or Super Mario Bros. Heck, I personally enjoy a quick game of Pong when I have to kill some time! There just are many amazing titles on older consoles, just like there are on newer ones. While they didn't make my list, I still love Paper Mario and Super Smash Bros on N64, or Excitebike and Super Mario Bros or even Duck Hunt on NES. And while some of those 'best game ever' titles like Ocarina of Time and Super Metroid are games I still either have to buy or come around to playing, it's just a fact that classic games can still be a lot of fun, even if they're old. Here in the Netherlands we have a saying: 'Old, but gold'. :)

A few disclaimers: I have only owned a DS, 3DS, Wii, (very bad) PC and now since a few months a PS3. And there are many supposedly amazing games that I haven't been able to play yet. If you're wondering why your favourite isn't on my list, check whether it's in my collection. If not, then it's probably not here because I haven't played it. Also, I know everyone knows this is based on personal opinion, but I'm saying it again because my opinion can be very unique sometimes.
Second disclaimer: I'm only adding one game per franchise. That seems like the most fair thing to do.
Also, I find it very difficult to make lists like this. However, I did my best. So my top 10 favourite games of all time is:

Surprised to see someone that's only owned something at the 7th generation.  Just didn't get into gaming in your early days or are you just young enough that mid 2000 was the time you got into gaming?

Whoops, I forgot to mention my NES. I now also have a PS1, but I have no games for it.
But yeah, I'm 17 years old, and my DS Lite and Wii were my first consoles ever. Since then I upgraded to DSi, and then 3DS, and my cousin gifted us his PS3 last christmas. He did also give us his NES about a year ago, and I got the PS1 very recently (though again, I don't have any games for it yet). As for PC, I've always been stuck with bad PCs. I'm going to do study Communications and Multimedia Design in a few months though, so I'll finally get a good PC soon. But yeah, the seventh generation was my introduction into gaming, and I grew up on Nintendo with the Wii and DS. I am a fan of retro gaming, but I haven't played many of the amazing retro games yet. I'm working on it though :)

  • Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS (3DS)
  • Bayonetta (PS3)
  • Pokémon White 2 (NDS)
  • Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS)
  • Super Paper Mario (Wii)
  • Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)
  • Mario Kart Wii (Wii)
  • Plants vs. Zombies (PC)
  • Wii Sports (Wii)
  • Kirby Super Star Ultra (NDS)

Honorable mentions (because, again, I suck at these lists):
  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky (NDS)
  • Wii Party (Wii)
  • Mario Party 8 (Wii)
  • Tomodachi Life (3DS)
  • Super Scribblenauts (NDS)
  • Kid Icarus: Uprising (3DS)
  • Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures (3DS)
And a ton of other games because I really suck at making lists and I love so many games!

The only ones that I could place right away were the top 3. There's no doubt in that top 3 at all. But after that it became VERY difficult. I went of the enjoyment I get and got out of the game compared to the rest of the games, and of course nostalgia is a factor as well.

I'm running a bit short on money, and there are some games coming out I really want to get, so I decided to sell my Graphite PAL Game Boy Advance SP.

EDIT: The GBA SP has been sold. Pokémon Pinball is still available though.

I'm also selling my PAL copy of Pokémon Pinball for the Game Boy Color.
EDIT: This one is sold as well. In other words, everything has been sold.

Oh god KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!! lol I have no idea the exact one you have but most rip off consoles are extreamly cheap and as such experience so many issues caused by shitty low quality hardware. Just think of the main goal of a ripoff console. to either make more money than you get sued for or to make it extreamly hard to track your company so it is impossible to get sued.

Its actually a great find and Im glad you got it! I have 2 wii ripoffs and 3 other ripoff consoles. most of them retail for ~25-35 USD but they are the systems you usualy are unable to find outside of retail, so its kind of weird someone was selling it.

That's what I love about flea markets. Anyone can sell anything. I've found stuff on flea markets that was way weirder than this :)

I remember seeing a console very similair to this at my local warehouse when I was a kid. I was intrigued by it, probably because of my huge love for the Wii, but I never got it, until now. :)

You're right though, the quality is terrible, even the on-button feels somewhat broken. Heck, even the battery slot and AV-cables don't work right! But I'm a huge sucker for obscure and unique (or "unique" in this case) gaming hardware. I don't know what it is, but it has a certain kind of charm. Maybe I just like this one due to my love for the Wii, who knows. But for €3,50, I did get some good laughs out of it. I definitely don't regret buying it. :)

Yesterday was King's Day here in the Netherlands, so I managed to snag some great deals. King's Day is a national holiday in the Netherlands where we celebrate the king's birthday, and one of the most beloved traditions is the flea market. Almost every city and village in the country has a flea market on King's Day, so it's the perfect day to snag up some great deals.

I had to do some voluntary work during the day, so I missed a deal on an original Xbox for €5. Luckily, my brother got that one. As for me, this is my King's Day haul:

Apart from the non-gaming related Guy Fawkes mask and magnetic tabletop game, I got a universal remote control for my two tv's, since neither of them still has the original remote (and one of them doesn't even have the minus-button anymore).

As for actual gaming stuff, I got Lego Racers on PC for just €1, and Sonic Unleashed for €2, both still in really good shape and Sonic Unleashed is complete with the manual. Even for King's Day, that's a great deal.

But the most notable thing is obviously that console. I have no clue what it is. Obviously it's a Wii rip-off console, but all I know is that it was probably created by a company called Hamy, that the 18-in-1 game is obviously trying to copy Wii Sports, and that it's probably called Digitron (even though there's absolutely no labeling on the console whatshowever). I paid €3,50 for the console, the 2 cartridges that came with it, and all the controllers and plastic accessories.

To put it bluntly, it's horrible. I won't go into detail here, but just watch ProJared's video on the worst console ever if you want to know more. I have different games with it, but the console seems to be almost identical. But I did get a few good laughs out of it, just from the pure random things it threw at me (a complete 16-bit remake of the Wii Sports menu, completely fake motion controls, batteries that won't fit because the spring is wáááy too strong, a bootleg Ariel from the Little Mermaid, and that's just the tip of the iceberg), so I can't complain too much. At least it's something unique in my collection :)

Also, my local toy store was having a huge discount on amiibo; 50% of all figures. So I got Link and Fox, which now puts me at 26 amiibo in total.

So now I'm up to 26, namely:
Smash series:
Peach
Rosalina & Luma
Bowser Jr.
Yoshi
Pikachu
Jigglypuff
Charizard
Pit
Palutena
Marth
Robin
Captain Falcon
Zero Suit Samus
Meta Knight
Wii Fit Trainer
Duck Hunt-duo
R.O.B.
Mr. Game & Watch
Mii Gunner
Sonic
Mega Man
Pac-Man
Link
Fox

Other:
8-bit Mario - Classic Colours
Shovel Knight

And then there's the Humble Friends of Nintendo Bundle. Now that I can actually get it, I got it, so now I also have Retro City Rampage DX and Shantae and the Pirate's Curse (3DS).

So to summarize, in the last two days, I got:
  • Lego Racers (PC)
  • Sonic Unleashed (Wii)
  • Digitron console bundle, including:
    • The console
    • A regular controller
    • Two motion controllers
    • Two games;
      • 18 in 1 Sports Game
      • Sports Game 69 in 1
    • A bunch of plastic accessories for the motion controllers
  • Retro City Rampage DX (3DS)
  • Shantae and the Pirate's Curse (3DS)
  • Link amiibo
  • Fox amiibo
I must say, I'm very pleased :)

Video Game Database Discussion / Re: Duplicate Listings 2016

Whoops, looks like I accidentally created duplicate entries for the Digitron console. Sorry, I didn't mean to, but my wifi was acting weirdly and I though the first entry didn't get through. I know they're in different categories, but that's because I made a mistake with the first one. Sorry, I'll be more careful next time :3

Modern Video Games / Re: Kickstarters and you
« on: April 19, 2016, 04:09:50 pm »
Here's a new Kickstarter for a game called Use Your Words.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/559253918/use-your-words

This game is co-created by Brentalfloss, the popular YouTuber who adds lyrics to video game music, and Smiling Buddha Games, a company I've never heard of before.

It's a party game that's kind of like an expanded version of Fibbage, mixed with some elements from Cards Against Humanity. All players use their phones, tablets, etc, while the game is played on a laptop or TV. The basic idea is that the TV gives you something (like a sentence with a missing word, or a hashtag, or a photo, etc), and you have to fill something in on your device that'll be funny with the situation on TV. Players then vote for the funniest answer and that answer wins.

It's currently in development for PC and Wii U, with other systems included in the stretch goals, ranging from PS4 to Amazon TV. It looks like it could be quite fun if it's worked out a little more. I love Cards Against Humanity, and Fibbage looks like a lot of fun too (though I don't own it), so this could be good!

Hardware and Tech / Re: DSi XL not responding to anything
« on: April 04, 2016, 06:09:52 am »
Yeah, turns out the screen protection stickers were just applied badly, just like you said. She bought protection stickers for smartphones, cut them into shape, and put them on. That didn't work out...
Maybe I should look at the obvious things next time before jumping on here. Thanks for the help though!

Hardware and Tech / DSi XL not responding to anything
« on: April 02, 2016, 08:20:44 pm »
My grandma has a DSi XL, the first version of it (the Wine Red one). She enjoys occasionaly playing Brain Training or Germ Buster on it, or at least, she enjoyed that.

A few days ago her DSi XL almost completely stopped responding to any interaction. It hadn't been used for quite a while at that point. It'd turn on just fine, and we'd see the main menu without any issue. Music played, photos appeared on the top screen, nothing out of the ordinary. However, we soon realised that the D-pad wasn't working. We couldn't move around the menu or select a different game or app. We tried the touch screen, but that didn't respond to anything either. Swiping, tapping, nothing worked. We turned it off, put in a game, and turned it back on, and we did see the icon of the game. However, the A button didn't work either! Both the A-button and the Touch Screen do work on the Safety Precautions screen, but after that they stop working. Eventually we found out the L and R buttons do work, but again only once. You can open the camera with the L and R buttons, and cancel out of it with the B button, but after that those buttons stop responding too.

The battery probably isn't the issue. It said it was fully charged and even if it wasn't then it wouldn't have booted up on the brightest screen settings without issue. It also can't be the game that's inserted into the system, because we were having these same issues without a game inserted into it.

So here are the problems we're having listed out:
- D-Pad doesn't work at all
- A-button and Touch Screen don't work past the Safety Precautions screen
- The L and R buttons (and presumably also the B-button) stop working after using them once.
- The main menu shows up fine without any issue, and it seems to be running flawlessly.

We've never used any illegal devices (like the R4 or mod chips) with it. It's a completely clean system in pretty good shape (since she doesn't play on it that often). During my life and my three DS systems (the DS Lite, the DSi and the 3DS) I have never seen something like this, so I'm completely clueless as to what could be the issue. I'll do some research online, and we'll probably also contact Nintendo soon, but maybe one of you has had these issues before? Does anyone have any idea on how to fix this?

Recently bought a Dualshock controller and a 3rd party memory card for my PS1. Now I just need a game for it  :P
Also managed to get More Brain Training from Dr. Kawashima: How Old Is Your Brain? with it for free. Sadly, it's without its original box, which makes it my first DS game without its box, but hey, it's still a fun little piece of DS history.

Also went to my local library today, and got an idea. Libraries here in the Netherlands also have certain games available to rent. Sadly, the selection is rather limited, especially in the smaller libraries. Usually they have nothing but licensed games and shovelware. But I went in there today, and wrote down every title of every Wii, DS and 3DS game they had on the shelves. Then I went to the computer and checked the online catalogue. Turns out one game was missing from that catalogue: Titanic Mystery on DS. So I took it to the counter, the lady scanned it, and indeed, it was taken out of circulation and then by mistake put back onto the shelves. Normally the library sells books and other media that have been taken out of circulation for 50 cents a piece, but the lady was just like 'Take it and don't come back'. So now I got myself Titanic Mystery for free :) . No idea whether it's any good, but we'll see. The more important thing is that I should go check on more libraries now!

You are a pinball machine owner, you can call them flippers now. ;)
I wasn't entirely sure whether that was the correct word in English, but if it is, then I will :)

Never mind my previous post, now all the flippers on the left side don't work. All three of them don't respond to anything. I guess we'll just call in the mechanic, but if anyone knows any solution please do tell me!
