Disco Elysium has one of the best game stories I've ever played.  It's too bad the company fell apart, I would have loved to see what future projects would look like.

The only expectation any recipient should have is that you are guaranteed to receive at least $60 worth of videogames or videogame related items before shipping that is not a duplicate of anything you own on your vgcollect profile, is in the region you prefer, and is on your wishlist if that is what you express to the organizer.

If a Secret Santa wants to exceed the $60 threshold- they should be free to do so- but the expectation should not be that everyone has to do so- otherwise what's the point of even having a minimum.

Meant to post this earlier.

Thanks Secret Santa (cartagia)

Some of these game selections might seem a bit suspect but it was upon my request!  I bought a bunch of box/manual only from a friend recently and have been trying to track down the loose carts.  My SS did a great job at helping me knock quite a few off my list.  Glad others enjoyed their gifts, hope you all have a great rest of 2023.

Guys,

I typically open my Secret Santa gift early because I participate in multiple Secret Santas across the internet and want to avoid getting duplicate items. This is what I received:

There was only 1 item that I asked for here (Asura's Wrath). I specifically asked for only items off my given wishlist:

I thought my specified wishlist was varied and included several moderately priced items.

Additionally, I was given a Game Gear game. I don't have a Game Gear and am not sure why my gifter thought I collect Game Gear games.

To top it all off, the insert for the SteamWorld Dig 2 game is a counterfeit. This game's insert is supposed to have a reversible cover. You can check Youtube videos to verify this. Also the feel of the insert is unlike an official Switch insert. This is how I knew for sure it was not authentic.

I always go above and beyond when I do Secret Santas, so it hurts me when someone does less than the bare minimum to fill their quota.

This indeed has been the most disappointing Secret Santa I have ever participated in. There was almost no thought put in the gifts procured. It reeks of laziness.

I would just like to know who my Secret Santa this year is, and what was the thought process behind the gifts he chose?

I'm sorry you are disappointed in your gifts.  I thought your VG collect wishlist and sell list were fair game- so I used both.

Only purchase items from my wish list.

Additional comments:
Despite being listed on my Sell List, the items on there were selected specifically as options for Secret Santa.

I read this as the sell list as additional options for purchasing.

You were not easy to buy for- you wanted a lot of stuff in mint condition/100% complete/new- and a lot of stuff well over the gift limit.  I tried my best.  My local stores had basically none of what you wanted on your smaller sell list- or if they did-not in the condition you were wanting.

Asura's Wrath was from my personal collection.

I saw Steamworld Dig 2 on your larger wishlist so I thought it was fair game.  I didn't realize the art was repro- the local game store that I bought it from usually will identify repro cover art but I didn't check closely.  It was priced at the rate of a complete copy so I was none the wiser.  It probably fooled them as well.  It didn't occur to me that repro cover art would even be an issue with Switch titles.  If I would have known, I would have bought another game.  I am sorry about that.

The other stuff I just threw in as extras as I thought with those two games I was well over the gift limit.  You seemed to like sealed stuff so I thought a sealed game gear game would be a fun novelty for you.  If it offends you so much, throw it away.

Anyways- that's my position on this.  Hope everyone else is happy with their gifts.

Classic Video Games / Re: Super Mario World CIB prices....WTF?!?!
« on: May 07, 2023, 02:57:26 pm »
I don't understand why this is such a shock.  It's a universally loved game and because most copies were sold as a pack-in, the supply of boxes- whether original print or later prints is not high enough to meet the demand of collectors and enthusiasts that want a complete copy.  It's not always some conspiracy- this hobby has become exponentially more popular in the last 5 years- more people want to become videogame collectors- prices go up.

Are you in any national facebook collecting buy/sell groups?  Outside of ebay, I often find buying from other collectors and resellers is the way to go.  Some groups I recommend- Retro Universe, Filthy Games, Collectors of America, Planet Retro, and many more.

Even better- do you have a local/regional retro Fb group?  Living in the PNW, we have two major communities- Portland Retro Gamers and Greater Seattle Area Retro Gamers- I've made some great friends and gotten some great deals on games and consoles over the years.  It's how I got my Vectrex!

A few weeks for me at this rate.  Hard for me to turn down deals for stuff I want.  Today I had gone about 3 weeks since buying any retro games and I just dropped a stack on some sweet boxed SNES that popped up in a fb group.  Can't quit this hobby lol.

My longest purchase pause was just after college- 2011.  Outside of the occasional new release- I didn't buy much retro for over 3 years (bad timing in retrospect).  I nearly left the hobby to pursue other interests.  My brother dragged me to our city's retro expo and got me hooked again.  From 2015 on- it's been near constant outside of the first year of law school where I wasn't working- had to put a pause on purchases then too.

I will sell/trade doubles- but nothing I don't have an extra of usually unless I'm really not attached to the games (like Gamecube commons)

I was able to trade for a CIB Demikids Light Edition at my most recent local retro expo last month- there are definitely benefits to trade when you don't want to fork over large stacks of cash for really expensive games.

Nah fuck 'em.  They have always been a trash business- years before youtubers found it trendy to make videos about them.  They used to spam my inbox with stupid bait and switch promotions that always turned out to be a shit deal- I had to ask to be removed off their mailing list.

This is not an example of a poor "small business" misunderstanding the word "refurbished".  The owner Drew is not innocent nor stupid, he knows what he is doing.  His business model works on taking advantage of the misinformed.  Which fine, many businesses do that- but if you are outright lying and someone calls you out on you shit, you can't blame anyone but yourself.

If you are going to call something refurbished and charge premium prices- you need to provide a premium product.  It's not just cleaning dust out of the console- you have to replace thermal paste, you can't leave broken plastic in the system, you have to actually make sure the damn thing works.

And if I'm paying $400 for a Ps3 you better give me a god damn oem controller- I mean come on- how can you possibly defend these guys.  Until they got called out on it- their website would show a real controller in the product listing but then send you a shitty third party.

No one would give a fuck about these guys if they were just honest about what you get.  If they said as-is, exterior cleaning only- fine- but they fucked around and found out.

And the funniest part is, all they have to do to fix this issue- is not lie about their products or process, and they can't even do that.

Eventually the youtubers will get bored and move on, but it's fun to see them sweat a little.  They've already made some changes to their website (quietly) in response to the criticism so it's clearly working in some respect.

There's just so many solid local game shops to support that don't do this kind of shit, why should we have a lick of sympathy for em?

Open it up- see what contents are in there.  Manuals did not come sealed inside the box- the only valid shrink wrap is on the outer box.  Someone after opening the box put the manuals into shrinkwrap- so it adds no value.

At the moment- I only have 7 Genesis games on my wishlist.  I've done pretty good at tracking down all the Genesis games I've wanted in the past few years.  I may add more in the future.  No particular order on any of these.
