Yeah for a while after college, I stopped playing and collecting for the most part.  Almost ended up selling my whole collection.  Just developed other interests.  Then my brother convinced me to give it another go, and I started dating a girl who liked gaming and I decided to get back into it.  And then I got really into it.  Once I start working full-time after the bar and start having kids, I'll probably have to slow down significantly again, so I'm enjoying this while it lasts.

PS1 is my favorite system to collect for, easy to find and I don't have much competition since everyone around me just has a hardon for nintendo.

I enjoy collecting for a lot of other systems but snes is probably my least favorite.  Too expensive and since I like CIB stuff, it's really too expensive.  I still like the system but it's just not fun to collect for.

Just completed a trade.  Transaction was smooth, communication was great.  Would happily deal with again! Thanks.

I think this is the original^^^^^- it's the title on the spine and the manual refers to it as "Open Ice"

There are a few more ps1 dupes I've come across as I've continued to determine what I need for a full set. I'll add more if I can remember which ones

PS1 is my main focus, but I enjoy collecting for all sorts of systems.

« on: January 03, 2019, 12:22:51 am »
I started collecting when I was young, around 11 or 12.  This was around 2002-2003.  I would babysit and mow lawns in order to buy as many games as possible. While all my friends frequently traded in their games, I always loved collecting and rarely traded or sold any games I had.  I however only collected PS1 and PS2 games for many years.  I did not have a very big collection but I would spend hours cataloging and organizing the games I owned, I still have some of my handwritten lists.  When I learned to drive, that helped me add more to my collection and by the time I was 17,  I had around 50 PS1 games, 300 PS2 games, 50 PS3 games and some GC and other miscellaneous titles.  When I went to college in 2008. my collecting slowed down quite a bit as I was not working but I was able to continue building up my ps1 and ps2 collection.  I nearly stopped collecting around 2012, I was working and living on my own and I did not find much time to game or collect.  I sold off some of my collection and most of the rest was stored in bins in my closet.  My brother who had also had a strong interest in games had started collecting extensively and convinced me to get back into it by dragging me to the local retro expo in our town.  I loved it though I was still strictly a playstation collector at that point. Around 2013-2014 is when I really started collecting and began to expand to new systems and when I got a major pay raise, I began to expand into new systems.  My brother also left the scene and sold me all his boxed N64, DC and boxed GBA stuff which led me into looking for those systems too. I began to start collecting for cartridge systems, DC, Saturn, TG 16, Genesis, and this last year I even got a 3DO and a Jaguar!  Now I collect for a ton of stuff.  I love this hobby!  I've met so many great people, have gotten a lot of great stuff and I can't wait to finally own a place so I can display it all.

So I would say I have desired to be a collector since I was a kid- 2002-2003, but it was not until 2013-2014 where I began to collect on the scale I do today.

I've never considered shipping part of the cost but it would probably good to clarify.

I like the idea of having each person fill out a short questionnaire before participating.  Maybe that can help mitigate disappointment.

Personally I love receiving stuff not on my wishlist, as long as I don't already own it.  And I guess if I already own it, I can just trade it to someone else for something I want.  And for my giftees, I like to go on and off the wishlist and use the wishlist as suggestions and not necessarily as required.  I also like finding most of my stuff locally, just ordering everything off ebay is not very fun.  Reading these responses though has made me second question this method.  Both of my giftees in years past have enjoyed my gifts but if I was to do the same for someone else, it might be disappointing for them.  A bit more information about my recipient and what they like would better inform me how strictly I need to follow the list.

Merry Christmas, everyone. I opened my gift from my SS a while ago; I forgot to tell Soera that I received it until yesterday. Apologies for the delay.
I was going back and forth about posting something because I didn't want to sound ungrateful, but after seeing FlashBack's post...well...I'll just say it: my gift was not good.

It's unfortunate that your Secret Santa so clearly half-assed this, and it completely defeats the purpose of this exchange in the first place.  And worst of all, it was so bad that you no longer want to participate, and the whole exchange suffers because now we lose someone here who clearly made an effort to give great gifts.  Not everyone is always going to be completely satisfied but IMO, the people who gifted kashell and flashback should not be allowed to participate anymore.

All depends on the group in my experience.  I really enjoy the Collectors of America FB groups and the local groups in my state and city.  I have met some good friends and gotten some great deals. There can be lots of needless drama and politics but often easy to ignore/mute.  There's usually more drama and scamming in the national groups too.

My Secret Santa did an incredible job!  Many of these games have been on my wishlist for a while and I am so excited to finally have them. Assault Rigs and Robo Pit in particular are so much fun!  Also pictured is a Crash Bandicoot Micro Figure, I'll have to try to put this together over the break. Not pictured, some Jolly Rancher candy that I have also been enjoying.

Favorite 2018 Release:  Dragon Quest XI.  This is the most fun I had with a game all year, excited to finally finish it over winter break. I enjoyed God of War as well.

Least Favorite 2018 Release: Far Cry 5.  By no means a bad game, I was just severely disappointed.  I loved 3, but it seems like every game after has just tried to capture the magic of 3 and copy it instead of evolving into better gameplay and narrative experiences.  So much potential and it was so boring... Far Cry 4 was a bummer too

Favorite Game Played in 2018:  Dragonforce for Saturn.  This game truly hooked me and was so different than anything I've ever played.  I loved the 100 v 100 battles and the strategy involved.  I did not have a Saturn as a kid, so it's been a lot of fun checking out all the best games for the system and see what I missed out on.  Hollow Knight is a close second.

Least Favorite Game Played in 2018:  I played a lot of games that I didn't care for this year, but hard to think of one that really left a sour taste in my mouth other than Far Cry.  Okay I thought of one- Chasm.  Also a game that I was supremely disappointed in.  A metroidvania procedurally generated game sounds awesome, but this game is just not fun.  It was delayed for over 5 years, and it shows.  If this game would have come out 3-4 years ago, it would have likely played a lot better, but now it just feels so dated compared to games like Hollow Knight and similar.

Sleeper Hit of 2018:  Astrobot Rescue Mission- This is the best VR experience available, on any system right now.  Anyone with PSVR must check this out.

Favorite Gaming Moment in 2018:  Booting up and playing Spyro Reignited Trilogy for the first time.  Wow, they did such a great job and it was so much fun to get to experience some of the best games from my childhood with updated everything.

Proudest Collection Accomplishment of 2018: I got so many amazing things this year for my collection but my best find was probably getting an Atari Jaguar and a working CD attachment with a bunch of complete in box games in immaculate shape.

My goals:

Participate in the 52 game challenge again
Finish my ps1 longbox collection- only need 14 more
Make further progress on the ps1 complete set- just about 400 to go- i think i can get down to 150 by end of next year
Reorganize my collection so it looks less cluttered, get some higher quality bookshelves
Have fun and play lots of games!
