General / Re: What is The Rarest Game You Own?
« on: August 24, 2016, 04:53:34 pm »
The most expensive game I own is a mint complete copy of Team Buddies for Ps1, I believe it's fairly rare.  I've been able to track down a lot of the rarer ps1 games the last few years and I'm attempting to get more as the prices have begin to jump drastically.  Some games have jumped 200-400% in the past 6 months alone.

Oh and I do have a copy of Rule of Rose for ps2, picked it up for cheap back when Gamestop was clearancing ps2 stuff.  Probably my best score in pure value.

In terms of most unusual/rare item, I have a copy of Blast Chamber for Ps1 that looks normal at first glance, but when you boot it up, the game Street Racer PS1 loads instead.  The disc looks legit but there must have been a pressing error before release that mixed the two games up.  I have not been able to find much information on this disc through google.  I got it through a retro store that didn't even try the game out, otherwise they would have had the same bizarre reaction I had.

General / Re: The Portland Retro Gaming Expo 2016
« on: August 24, 2016, 04:46:18 pm »
I've gone the last few years and it is fantastic.  And in my experience, most vendors price their stuff very fairly and haggling is abundant.  My brother and I have gotten so many incredible deals over the years.  Not garage sale/flea market $1 Earthbound bs but anywhere between 20-40% below or more ebay/vgpc value depending on who you talk to.  And the vendor side is only part of it.  The local barcade Ground Kontrol provides a ton of freeplay pinball and arcade machines, there are tons of old systems set up for freeplay (or test out your purchases from the vendors), there are contests and tournaments and also panels.  Don't expect PAX level quality for panels and guests, mostly youtube personalities and local groups but this year they have the Angry Video Game Nerd and they've had ProJared, Game Sack, Metal Jesus, Pat the NES Punk and others in years past (and maybe again this year, not sure).

To address bikingjahuty's point about the resellers, there is some of that as well.  Some of the vendors and retro stores are really shady.  One store in particular "Retro Game Trader" is the worst offender.  They have a booth set up about their store but don't actually sell anything at the expo.  But they have people go around the expo and buy up stock that they turn around and sell at their retail store in Beaverton.  Which if you've ever been there is the biggest joke of a retro store ever.  I'm talkin' 2x-2.5x ebay for games.  Super Castlevania IV for SNES loose priced at 89.99 kind of bullshit.   Super shitty and every other vendor there hates their guts.

Portland is lucky that we have a lot of decent retro stores in the area (Except Retro Game Trader, seriously fuck those guys)

CD Game Exchange is by the best and most reasonable, they'll haggle up to 10% and usually their prices are below market already.

GameStar is generally overpriced but they often will do a 20% off purchases over 50$ or more so if you catch them sleeping you can get a deal or two.  They don't really haggle though.

Videogame Wizards is super unorganized and often they don't price their games very well which you can use to your advantage.  Which is how I scored a $50 complete copy of Klonoa for Ps1 last year.  Haggling encouraged.

Another Castle (WA vendor) generally way overprices RPGs, (PS1 in particular) but the not as popular uncommon titles are usually priced reasonably and again, always haggle.

Those are the vendors I remember.  There are so many others (a lot of Washington shops that I've never been to) and a lot of Mom and Pop and solo peeps with a table.  Some people will be unreasonable but there are so many tables that it's hard to be upset.

I live in Portland so I'd probably recommend it to fellow Oregonians and Washington residents.  Further than that, I don't know if it's really worth the drive/airfare hotel accommodations but if you are starved for retro gaming, this is a great event.

I'd be down for a VGCollect NW meetup.  I don't really know a lot of retro enthusiasts irl so this would be a good opportunity. I just started law school here in Portland so I have to cut back significantly how much I spend this year but I'm still going to bring some cash and score some great deals.

Got a copy of Rainbow Moon for vita and Shadow complex.  Thought about getting the soundtracks too but my wallet has suffered enough as of late.

Classic Video Games / Re: Games everyone hates but you love?

Knack on ps4! It's a solid brawler/platformer with tons of replay value and collectibles.

Agreed, really nice old school classic gameplay but too much hate from press and gamers.

Yeah I love Knack too.  Gets so much hate and it's just such a fun game as long as you aren't expecting a revolutionary platformer.

For me, I always loved The Grinch for the original playstation.  Maybe I was just really lacking in having better games available when I was a kid but I thought this was a great platformer with really cool gadgets.  I got stuck on 99% so I never got to play the secret mini game that unlocks at 100%.  Still bitter about that.

Just finished Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE

Pretty good game, combat becomes a bit of a slog near the end just watching the combo "sessions" and some of the menu interfaces are clunky for 2016 but I had a lot of fun and the bosses were particularly challenging and required some strategy.  I'm particularly proud of myself for having the attention span needed to actually complete a game of this size.

Offer up has been ridiculous for me lately.   I recommend anyone looking for good deals in their area and if they haven't checked this site, I'd give it a shot.  Lot of people on there that price with eBay and beyond but also a lot of people who practically give it away.

Just got a ridiculous Pokemon find today.  Originally someone had claimed all the game boy stuff but they never got back to the seller so I got all this:

Nintendo DS + 2 game boy sp w/ chargers

Pokemon Soul Silver w/ case and manual (no poke walker)

Pokemon Diamond CIB

Pokemon White 2 CIB

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 days CIB

Pokemon Emerald loose

Pokemon Fire Red Loose

Pokemon Leaf Green loose

Super Mario Advance 2 loose

Almost felt criminal.  They have definitely seen better days but a little cleaning of the contacts and they will be good.

Strategy guides for white and diamond

All for $160

Live a Live...that's such an underrated gem. Does this guy have any more of those for sale?

Unfortunately no.  Those were the only 5 he has.  He's just a young Dad selling off his snes collection so he can take his kids to disneyland.  Nice dude.

Yeah, I might just give it back to the guy.  I just get a black screen and then every 25 times or so it'll flash with color or some dead pixels and then die again.  It could just be that the connectors aren't working or maybe the rom is just toast.  No clue.

The Bahamut Lagoon cart is a bit sketchy as well, it takes a couple tries to boot and it sometimes stops working just after the title screen.  There seems to some weird ghosting or burn in so that could indicate that the rom is failing as well.  I tried it on my brother's mini-snes and it seemed to work a lot better so I'm going to clean my snes guts and see if that will help it play more reliably.  If not, I might try to have him take that one back as well.

The Clock Tower connectors are wonky too but once it boots (5-10 tries), it works pretty well.  Probably my favorite game out of the 5 so far, so I'm hoping once I clean the connectors on my snes, it'll boot and run more reliably.

Live a Live and Star Fox 2 work perfectly.

Super jealous of you getting a boxed Star fox 2 for basically $40.

Ha, well don't be too jealous.  I can't get the Front Mission cart to work at all... Luckily the guy I bought them from is still in contact so I'm not completely screwed over.

But, Star Fox 2 works great though.

The repros I got for $40 a piece.

My SNES hookup came through big.  Particularly excited for Sunset Riders

Found a black label Croc! Also Metal Gear Acid 2 came with a still sealed Solid Eye!

lets put it this way. one of the stores I frequent sells repro carts for games at $40-60 a pop for just the cartridge itself, they also do not have anywhere near as good of games as these and people still buy them. if your apprehensive about it just be up front with him he may drop the price down to where your comfortable buying them.

He accepted my offer. I'm excited to try them all out.  Thanks for the advice everyone.
