News / UPDATE - Few bug fixes
« on: January 28, 2015, 06:45:30 pm »
Hey all!

It's Wednesday VGC work night again! I just pushed out a fix for an issue that has been around for...forever. You can now see the correct field names on item history! I know it's small but it's one of those that has lingered.

I've also patched two other small bugs. One in regards to the Amazon pricing never updating and another which should help with some of our forum login issues. Going to be working on some more stuff tonight and will update this thread if / when I push out anything new.

Thanks!

Video Game Database Discussion / Re: Mass delete my Steam items?
« on: January 28, 2015, 06:16:42 pm »
My concern with having this option for general user is at some point someone will delete everything and will be asking matt/scott to put it all back.

Yeah and it's a one way street. We do have daily backups but there is no easy way to trudge through it.

Site Feedback / Re: VGC Subreddit?

If you look at the sidebar of /r/gamecollecting you'll see a link to VGC. I pretty much a post in that sub and a post on Digit Press to launch VGC way back when.

Interesting situation. Not sure if we have a good solution for this yet. Let me think it over and kick it around with other admins. Feel free to continue the discussion.

News / Re: UPDATE - Developers and Publishers are back and more.

Hi Matt,

When im on the site or forum, you still see that 'im not finished sign' above in the Tab page circling. I use Chrome as a browser

Now with writing this post, you see the NES cart, as it should be.

I hope it makes sense.

Edit:
Its wating for c.statcounter.

Yeah I'm noticing that too on some pages. We use them for our Analytics. I'll see if something is going on .

Yaaaay! Thanks! ;D

Quick question, since it doesn't seem to be listed in the style guide. What should be use for games that have more than one developer? Should we list all of a game's developers in the developer section, separating them with a semicolon or a comma? Or should we only add one main developer for each entry?

Don't have a solution for this yet. We may add a 2nd field.

Site Feedback / Re: Links timeout and then redirect to feed
« on: January 21, 2015, 08:33:02 pm »
One of the issues if that the Feed query is ridiculously slow. The other issue is that the original link you clicked on isn't honored and you are sent back to your feed no matter what. These issues are on my list to look at sometime.

A shelf view would be fantastic.  The ability to toggle info on/off would be nice too and as someone already mentioned, publisher/developer data.

Otherwise, I think everything is pretty nice.

Devs and pubs are back!

News / UPDATE - Developers and Publishers are back and more.
« on: January 21, 2015, 08:15:25 pm »
Hey all,

We just finished testing and pushing out an update to bring back the developers and publishers. For now this is only available when you edit an item as we are in the process of cleaning up the database. The old system allowed anyone to create a new entry which caused loads of duplicates and typos. We are using that list as our starting point but will be cleaning it up over the next few weeks. Once we feel like we have a good handle on it we'll roll out the devs and pubs to the create screen.

For now - new developers and publishers will have to be requested through the forum.

I also pushed out a fix for a login issue some people were having. If you've ever updated your email address on the site chances are your forum login / settings were screwed up. This updated corrects this and will keep things in sync going forward.

Let me know if you have any issues!

Thanks,
Matt

Yay Matt! Glad to see you're back around and gearing up to get back on track! Hopefully that means your life has settled down a bit. Congrats Pacpix!

Really looking forward to seeing the site grow even more.

Thanks! It's been busy but all for good reasons. The homebrew shop has been doing really well so it feels wrong to complain. Just more difficult to find spare time.

News / UPDATE - New staff and more
« on: January 14, 2015, 08:28:11 pm »
Hello all,

As you've hopefully noticed, we've been trying to get back in the swing of things around here. Scott and I are back to our weekly VGCollect work nights each Wednesday which will allow us a dedicated night to knock out a ton of updates and maintenance items. I'm working through a back log right now but we have a bunch of features / fixes and updates in the works that we'll be slowly rolling out.

VGCollect is continuing to grow at a great rate. In order to help with these, we've decided to promote pacpix to a staff position. Believe it or not but he has had an account with VGC since August 21st of 2011. He will be helping us with approvals, forum moderation and other site duties. Please welcome him aboard!

We'll be pruning the admin positions in the coming weeks and hopefully adding another new face to the team. Stay tuned...

As for other updates my current focus is on 3 items:

1. New grid/shelf view
2. Reimplementing devs and pubs
3. Better category organization

More news coming on those fronts within a week.

Thanks!
Matt

Site Feedback / Re: items

This is a feature that I have long been waiting for on this site.  We have so many other improvements that I am content to wait patiently, but "Custom user lists - this will allow users to create custom lists within their collections" was the number one item on Matt's to-do list 1.0.  My ideal list would look like this:

1.  Collection
     a. Hardware
     b. Accessories
     c. Physical Games
     d. Digital Games (Steam, PSN, OnLive, etc)

I'm holding off of adding anything else because I like that my collection only has my physical games currently (plus a few hardware/game bundles).

I like this as well.
