This will be a forum series where I'll talk about the history and my experience with the gaming consoles I own and I figured why not start with the first gaming console that was ever released.

The Magnavox Odyssey

This will be my 8-bits (instead of my 2-cents)  :P

History:
In the late 60's a man named Ralph Baer created something that was like nothing on the market, a box that you can hook up to a TV and play as a game. He called it “The Brown Box”. He tried to sell his prototype to many electronic companies and everyone turned him away til Magnavox saw it and took his idea and made what we know as the Odyssey in 1972.
Not only was this the First console but the first to use a Light Gun and changeable games (sort off).

How did it do?
Not well,  people where mislead by their ads that the system could only be used on Mangavox TVs because in every ad it was used on a Magnavox television. Guess people of the 70s where not to bright. (lol)  The system was discontinued by 1975 due to horrible sales and the Pong revolution. Only 300,000+ where sold.

Graphics:
Well it's pretty much a light square on the screen and you place a light plastic overlay over the TV screen to get graphics. There's no score, no boundaries and players pretty much could move where ever they want. The games are simple cards that tell the console how the lights should react. Most all the games require a second player, the only one you can solo on is the Light Gun games.  (soft off)  :P

Is this system still fun to play?
Not really, other then good laugh on how simple and primitive the games are the System is more of a novelty then anything else. Mostly you're showing someone how simple the first gaming console was.
The system has the weirdest controllers, its basically a box with three knobs and a reset button.

What games are worth playing?
Um... The Light Gun games and messing around with a friend is fun, but nothing stands out as a must play on the Odyssey.

How many versions are there?
Two main ones, Run 1 and Run 2. There is other models made over seas and even fake versions made out of the US. But we'll stick with the main two. The Run 1 and Run 2 models do have different versions mainly from the parts inside. (this is why some collectors look for certain serial numbers) But for Most collector's they mainly want a Run 1 model. How can you tell the difference?
Run 1 has a sticker on the bottom that says “run 1” and they don't have the Magnavox logo on the front of the console. Run 1's are the most sought after by collector's and usually fetch a higher price.
Run 2 has a “Run 2” sticker on the bottom and most (not all of them) have the Magnavox logo on the front of the console.

What do I need to know if I start collecting this system?
Well first that there's two main versions of this console, known as Run 1 and Run 2, and again Run 1's carry a higher price then Run 2 models. Many of these systems yellow with age and most have issues working. Make sure to check the battery compartment, one to see if there's any corrosion. This system was mainly powered by batteries and people leave them in the console. Also I find many of the buttons that hold the cover shut break off easy. But the biggest problem is finding a complete system. There's a ton of extra's that come with this console. The Overlays, 6 game cards, several decks of cards, a pair of dice, a cardboard football/roulette board, a score board, stickers, poker chips to name a few. The system didn't come with an AC Adapter instead it came with Batteries. Good luck finding the original batteries sill intact. (lol) You can buy an Adapter to use on it. Also the system requires a RF Box that was only used with older Odyssey consoles. If this is missing you wont be able to hook the system up to a TV. A complete System can run well over $200 if not more. Games for this system can be really hard to find complete especially the Light Gun. While you might get lucky and find one in the wild, the best bet is unfortunately Ebay.

My Experience with the Console
I didn't get an original Odyssey til about five years ago. My first was a Run 2 model and it was near complete. Then I got a Run 1 model a year later and it was missing the overlays and a few other pieces but between the two I have a complete set. I have hooked up the Odyssey to my HDTV with no problems (other this a slightly fuzzy screen and the overlays wont stay up) It's Weird, this is the only console I know off that when you put a game in the system it automaticly turns on. There is no power switch of any kind on the console. I honestly had fun messing around with it with other people who love classic video games, you can cheat by messing with one of the knobs on the controller and this gets some laughs. I tried playing with a casual gamer and they didn't get the charm and thought it was stupid. (lol) It's definitely a collector's piece and only collector's get any fun from it.
Then I got a Light Gun, I was surprised to see that the first light gun will work on an HDTV. But it will also react to any light source. (lol)  Its also kinda cool that you have to cock the gun like a real shotgun between shots. It's fun to show people the first game console and I love owning it but it's not something I play often.

Final Thoughts
This is a console for the collector who loves gaming history, someone who wants to experience what the first primitive games where like. This isn't for everyone just those who want to own a piece of gaming history.  8)

Let me know what you think, should I continue with more reviews and what console would you like me to do next? I may pick one you guys pick or I might just do it in a somewhat order of how they came out. I don't know yet how often I'll have the time to write one of these but I'll have one up as often as I can.   :D

Also do/did you own an Odyssey? If so reply with your experience with it. If not would you like to own one? ;D

by the numbers: 11 people own a Run 1 model and only 3 own a Run 2 on VGcollect.

Classic Video Games / PAL NES games
« on: February 10, 2014, 07:12:34 pm »
I have been collecting the PAL exclusive games for some time now, I'm not sure who here is even interested in collecting PAL NES games but I thought I'd let you guys know which ones work in a US NSTC Top Loader and which ones have issues.
Most all of mine are PAL B, i've heard conflicting stories if PAL A or B work better but maybe this will help someone know that if they buy this game that it will work in their Top Loading NES.

Aladdin – The titles and cut scenes play fine but the game itself freezes up and crashes.

Asterix – Titles and cut scenes play fine, but game is a glitch fest, you can play the character and see bad guys but background is glitched beyond playable.

Banana Prince – Plays great (only issue the text is in German)

Corvette ZR-1 Challenge – Starts off good but once race gets to first person view it glitches pretty bad. Pretty much unplayble.

Crackout – Plays fine no issues.

Dragonball – Plays fine no issues. (only issue is text is in French)

Dropzone – Plays fine for the most part, the score area in the middle is a little glitched. But game is playable.

Duck Maze – Plays fine no issues.

Konami Hyper Soccer – Plays fine little issues.

Legend of Prince Valiant - Plays fine no issues.

Les Chevaliers Du Zodiaque – Plays fine no issues (only issue is text is in French)

Lion King – Game plays like its having a seizure, background flips out really bad. Funny thing if you pause the game its a clear screen.

Little Red Hood – Plays fine no issues.

New Ghostbusters 2 – Plays fine no issues.

Noahs Ark – Plays fine no issues.

Parodius – Plays fine no issues.

Smurfs – Plays fine no issues.

Trolls in Crazyland – Plays fine no issues.

These are the only two games that where released in the US that I have PAL version

Digger T. Rock – Game backgrounds are glitched barely playable.

Mario & Yoshi – Plays fine no issues. (this game is Yoshi in the US)

If you have a PAL NES collection and a US Top Loading NES then please add to this list. Its nice to know which ones work.

General / Guess the Game System!!
« on: October 20, 2013, 01:39:08 am »
This is a pic I put together, it has most every console made worldwide (there's a few I missed)  :P
Including Variations, but not color or minor changes to systems like the buttons, hooks up etc. They gotta look different. Also I saved everyone naming hundreds of pong consoles. Only the first and the changeable Cartridge ones are in this picture.

There's 173 systems in this pic, see how many you can name a few are kinda cheating but are still a console.  :P Try not to cheat  ;)

Sorry about the numbers, some are hard to see, they looked fine before I downloaded it, just do the best you can. And have fun!  :D

Classic Video Games / Classic Game Party
« on: August 09, 2013, 05:16:42 am »
My friend is throwing a Cos-Play/Gaming party and wanted me to host a Classic Game Party, So we got several TV's playing nothing but retro game systems and I put up a display of some of my console collection. People are coming dressed up as characters from video games, movies, comics, cartoons you name it. lol

I just spent the last 8 hours packing up, transporting  and setting up a basement full of classic game consoles.

She decided to throw this party when we found out that the Chicago Comic-Con was charging $60 now just to get in, and most of the our group couldn't afford to go. Last year is was like $35 and before that it was like $25 to get in for one day now its $60? geez and that doesn't cover parking, signings, events, panels those all cost extra. I used to take $200 and still walked out with a bags full of goodies. Now I'd be broke before I even hit the vendors.

At least at this party people can drink.  ;)
I'll try and post some pic's of the game set up later.

Modern Video Games / Picked up an Ouya, here's my thoughts on it.
« on: July 04, 2013, 02:08:31 pm »
I picked up an Ouya last Monday, mostly out of curiosity then anything else.
I asked the guys at the store I bought it from, "can the games downloaded to this be played offline?" They all said yes.
This was important to me because I really don't think this system will last, and in time the servers will shut down.
After hooking it up and getting a long update the system ran.

The first thing I noticed was the controller lags pretty bad when scrolling through menus and games. Also I found the buttons kinda stick at times, and the Trigger buttons creak with their springs inside. But it's comfortable to use.
So I download a few games, then after a few downloads the system wouldn't download anything.
I was thinking wtf? Everything was "in queue" so I looked up online and it seems to be an issue with this system.
So I had to reset the system to original factory status and had to start over on all my downloads. (ugh)

So then I went through the game menus and was looking at what games I wanted to buy. And all of the games have no prices on any of them. You have to download the game before you can find out if its a free game or you have to pay for it. (ugh)

So After downloading Final Fantasy III I played the demo and thought, "this is pretty cool, guess I'll pay the $15 for it" So I hit the purchase button and payed for it. Then after downloading many other freebie titles, I disabled the internet and checked on how it would play. It booted up and I saw the buttons on the games I downloaded and tried to play FF3, and I got an error message that said I had to be online to play it, $15 wasted.  >:( (ugh)
But I only found two of the 20 games I downloaded has this issue. So test it offline before you click buy.

Next I downloaded the emulators. There's emulators for NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, Atari 2600, Neo Geo, Game Boy, NDS, PC, PS1, and I'm sure more later. So I downloaded some roms to test the emulators and after much trail and error. I got the them to read the roms and played some games. and the controls are so laggy it's really though to play. Kinda nice to sample the games I don't have in my collection, but it's weak compared to the original carts.

Most of the games I played where simple games you can play on a tablet or smart phone and if you already have one, whats the point of an Ouya? In conclusion the Ouya is a doomed system. The controls are laggy, the games are just smart phone aps, and the emulators are barely playable due to it's laggy controls. Games that are DMR and will become worthless once the servers go down. I have to say the Ouya is not worth the $100 investment. I only recommend one as a collectors item because I really don't see this thing lasting long.

Classic Video Games / Mystery NA PS1 Games
« on: May 18, 2013, 07:57:27 pm »
I was going through the PS1 list here figuring out what PS1 games I need and other then finding out I missed two games on my list. (whoops) there's two games listed here and on other complete PS1 game lists that I swear do not exist as a NA title.

- Attack of the Saucermen
- Global Domination

Other then pic's of their NA covers, I can only find them online as Pal games.
Does anyone know if ether of these games really came out in the USA?
If not I wanna take them off my list of missing PS1 NA games.

Hardware and Tech / Old 70's console issues.
« on: March 06, 2013, 06:52:49 am »
I just bought a Coleco Telstar Arcade, it was in its box in really good shape. It was only missing the original AC Adapter (but an old atari 2600 one seems to work) I hooked it up to several televisions of all kinds. (even an old B&W) and all I get is an black static screen.

It does react when i switch it on, but no game on screen. I'm wondering if the atari adapter is the problem? or maybe the game cart is not reading. (I did clean all the pins) I bought a 2nd cart off ebay and if it's the cart I should work with a different cart. (I hope) Or maybe its something inside.
If anyone has any ideas what it could be, please let me know. thanks.

Here's the system if you don't know what it is.

Classic Video Games / Here's a Fun Game to Play, What Would You Pick?
« on: March 02, 2013, 04:45:54 am »
Let say a collector was giving away his entire collection, and he owned one of every system, game and accessory. And he was giving out three items to everyone in the forum who posted once a day from his collection. what would you pick out from his collection.

Here are the rules.
 - You can list 3 items only once a day. You can't pick another 3 items til after midnight PST.

 - You can't repeat any item someone else listed, if someone picks it the item would be gone.

 - You can pick the same item ONLY if there's variations, Like 3 screw NES cart and a 5 screw.
or regular edition and limited edition. If someone lists say zelda1 and nothing else you can
assume its the standard version (the gold one) then you can list zelda1 (grey cart)
Also You can only pick from NA, EU and JP versions. We'll assume everything is NA unless listed.

 - You can't pick the same item by condition, We'll assume it's all NIB.

 - Only list Systems, Accessories and games. No toys, promo merchandise, swag stuff etc.
Also Lets keep it within the gaming consoles, No Arcades cabinets or PC/Mac stuff.
Handhelds okay, computer game consoles okay, (eg. Atari 400 and TI99) You can list Arcade
Console Conversions and their games. (eg. MVS & Atomiswave) but they can be only listed
once. (MVS carts & systems can have a lot of versions) Also lets not list DLC stuff lol

 - No prototypes, or special versions not given to the public in some way. No display stuff ether.
It had to be sold or given away as a promo to a lot of people, like mail-away or a contest where
at least 100 people won. So no NWC90's it's too rare for even this collector to own it. lol
There are a few extremely rare items that only a few are known to exist, but it was sold to the
public it just failed so bad that not many exist today, these can be listed.  eg. See my 1st pick.

 - It can be from any generation. So if you would pick a Wii U black, list it lol

 - You can pick homebrew or reproduction games. but these can be only listed once, no variations.
These can have to many variations to keep track off. Now you can pick NWC90 (reproduction) lol

 - Also don't edit your picks once someone else posts after you. Lets not change our minds
because you thought of a better choice later. If it's unpicked the next day then list it.

 - And last just have fun with this, I'm not going to be too nit-picky and you shouldn't be ether.
And hey maybe someone playing with this game see's your picks and will PM you about a
    sell/trade.

I'll try and keep and updated list of all that's picked out at least once per page. and you can too if you like. I'm going to at least list my picks til the end of March. So for me the game may end there.

I mainly want to see what people would pick out in this scenario. Are they picking rare games? Valuable games? or games they always wanted to play/own but maybe can't find.
Again have fun with this, Get thinking what you always wanted in your collection.  :)
