What is your favorite gaming console ever?
Sega Saturn

What console do you have the most fun collecting for?
PC Engine DUO-R

In my case, the PC Engine is a close second to the Saturn in the subject of having fun collecting. Both have some pretty expensive games, but since non-gamers usually don't know anything about them it is relatively easy to find good deals at recycle shops and Hard-Offs in Japan.

It seems to be an interesting handheld, but I can't see many advantages in purchasing a Super Retro Boy... The GameBoy Advance SP also plays all GB, GBC and GBA games, has the L and R buttons on their proper places and I believe it can be found in very good shape for the same price or less. Don't you think?

My answer to both questions would have to be the PS4. Everything that the PS1 was, the PS4 has improved on and will continue to pass. The amount of games and the content of the games that will be on there by the end of the consoles life will most likely be untouched by any system ever.

Btw, Im jealous of you living in Japan and would love to go there.

I am not one of those overly nostalgic guys who thinks that everything was better in the past, but, although owning the system since it's launch, I don't think the PS4 has (nor has it the potential to have) a very good library... In fact, I would say that unfortunately it is on the way to be the worst Sony console ever in my understanding... So, I would love to hear from you what makes you like it so much.
Oh! And if you happen to be in Japan someday or need something from here, just let me know! It is far from the best place in the world to collect for the Master System and Mega Drive, but it is great for almost everything else!

Also, hey! Hook me up with some cheap Godzilla figures from over there! lol

Haha! Godzilla figures and memorabilia can be found in abundance and almost for free around here. If you are looking for any particular stuff, I can check it for you.

I can see that many people here love the DreamCast as much as I do!

Maybe because the Master System was such a juggernaut back in Brazil when I was a kid (and in fact, in way, it still is) I've never felt any attachment for the NES (or for Nintendo in general)... So It is very interesting for me to see how gaming culture varies from country to country and how many people around the world have so much love for the NES (a console that I saw for the first time in the late 90's!).
After moving to Japan, I can say that I finally begun to appreciate the Famicom and the Disk System, but Alex Kidd is still much closer to my heart than I think Mario will ever be...

I've seen it on the internet sometimes, but I can't say I have ever seen an Amiga with my own eyes (haha)...

And I also think the Mega Drive is an awesome system and, in my opinion, it is the best looking console ever (specially the Japanese model 1 with the huge 16-BIT stamped on it and with the model 1 Mega CD attached to it).

For most of my life I've considered the PS1 to be the best gaming console ever...
However after starting to collect for the Master System (and maybe because I was born in Brazil, where the MS was king over the NES) I figured out that it may be my favorite console of all time.

On the other hand, since I've been living in Japan for 6 years now, the Saturn became my favorite console to retro collect.
So, I ask you guys:

1) What is your favorite gaming console ever?
2) What console do you have the most fun collecting for?

I have a very modest SFC collection, so I am far from a specialist on the console, but I will try focusing my recommendations on some Japanese exclusive titles:

Rockman & Forte, Macross Scramble Valkyrie, Gundam W Endless Duel, The Firemen, Lady Stalker, Popful Mail, Paneru de Pon, Kishin Douji Zenki: Rettou Raiden and any SNK brawler released for the system.

Since you want to practice japanese, I can also recommend you Tales of Phantasia, Star Ocean, Seiken Densetsu 3, Bahamut Lagoon and any Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy.

I was able to solve the problem with a very simple (and cheap) AV/HDMI converter. The image quality is still very far from perfect, but it will work until I get myself a nice upscaler.

Did you check the settings on your tv? Some tv's allow to change from pal to ntsc, resolution, etc.

But the more modern the tv is, the less you can change

I checked it many times, but I couldn't find anything... My TV is a 2012 Toshiba Regza 32S5. If you find anything, please let me know...

I was able to solve part of the problem by using a PAL/NTSC converter. Now the image does not flicker anymore and it has color, however it is running at around only 1 or 2 fps...
Any clues on how to solve this final part of the puzzle?

You're not using a tube tv? Not really sure. You should just buy the sega Mark III, and buy a cartridge converter. You can play all the japanese games, including the sg1000 games, and Pal games this way in 60hz. The Mark III from japan works here with a scart cable. The modern tube tvs should be 50hz 60hz compatible.

Yeah, I am using an LED TV now. I already have a Japanese Mega Drive with the Mega Adaptor (Power Base Converter) to play Japanese Master System games. I bought the European Master System in order to have access to the Western library without having to use a cartridge converter and because the Mark IIIs/Japanese Master Systems are usually too expensive...
Once again, thanks for the help and, if you have some clue on what to do in order to make this MS work in Japan with a Japanese LED TV, please let me know.

Thanks for the prompt reply!
Unfortunately, it is not that easy to get SCART cables in Japan, and I would need to get another adapter (such as a Framemeister) in order to connect it to the TV. And even so, I am not sure this would fix the problem...
Do you think getting a simpler PAL=>NTSC converter could solve the matter or do I need to find a converter to change the 60Hz Japanese electric current to 50Hz in order to properly play it?

Hello guys.

I would be very glad if anyone could help me on this subject.

I live in Japan and, on a recent trip to Belgium, I got a European Model I Master System.
In Europe, it seemed to work nicely, however, when pluging it into my Japanese Toshiba 32S5 TV, the image gets black and white and all flickery and the sound seems kinda slow.

I guess it happens either because most European countries use PAL 230V 50Hz while Japan uses NTSC 110V 60Hz.
So, any guesses on how to solve the problem? Do I need to (1) mod the console, (2) get a 50Hz=>60Hz frequency changer or (3) get a PAL=>NTSC converter?
