The graphics and sound were above anything else that generation. But the controller killed all the potential it had, IMO.

True, the stock controllers are pretty weird and uncomfortable. Although you can get them to work fairly well if you use your thumb to work the "knob" in the same manner you would a modern controller's analog stick. The metal leaves seem to make better contact with the controller PCB that way.

1. Kaboom! (2600)
2. Frogger (Colecovision)
3. Pepper II (Colecovision)
4. River Raid (2600)
5. Spy Hunter (Colecovision)
6. Burgertime (Colecovision)
7. Frenzy (Colecovision)
8. Venture (Colecovision)
9. Donkey Kong (Colecovision)
10. Atlantis (2600)

The CV was an awesome system with a tragically short lifespan.

This is an issue with the 6 button controllers. Certain games (like Golden Axe I think) won't behave correctly with a 6 button controller unless you start up the Genesis while holding down the "mode" button.

Hardware and Tech / Re: Looking for solid HDMI upconverters
« on: March 26, 2014, 08:24:47 pm »
It's important to remember that composite-to-HDMI converters like these...

... are NOT upscalers or upconverters. They merely convert the 480i composite signal to 480i HDMI. The result will look no better than connecting composite directly to your TV.

If you're using an HDTV, the final result will depend on the quality of your TV's internal upscaler. Most TV's give somewhat mediocre results, with cropping and other issues you mentioned. There's a chance you can go to your TV's picture setting menus to fix that.

Real upscalers are kinda expensive, but incredibly worth it. They specialize in taking the source signal and scale it up to 1080p so your TV doesn't have to.

For a clear picture with no lag, this is the one you want.

Metroid
No more first person shooters. Let's get back to exploration in 2D, or if you gotta make it in 3D, I've always said that Dark Souls is pretty much the modern Super Metroid...

Valkyria Chronicles
The game came out of nowhere, and wasn't a huge success at first. The developers assumed people didn't like it that much and shifted production to the PSP to cut costs. Then word of mouth got out, and the game became a good success in America. Sega is amazed, and decides to release the PSP sequel in English. But since the PSP market in the US was nearly dead at that point, not many bought it. Sega continues to believe that people don't like the series, and the third game doesn't get released here at all. It's terribly sad story of the death of one of the best new IPs in years. A new, proper game on PS4 could be spectacular.

Monkey Island or Maniac Mansion
These series are dead in license hell, but they were so much fun.

Chrono Trigger HD
Remember Dragon Quest 8's stunning visuals? Picture that, only with Chrono Trigger in HD...

The Last Blade
Wishful thinking at best, but if you've ever played The Last Blade 2 on the Neo Geo, it's one of the most beautiful and fun fighters there is. Imagine if they made a sequel with the same level of care that King of Fighters XIII got?

Valkyrie Profile
VP2: Silmeria is one of those rare RPGs that not only has a cool story, but is really FUN to play.

Final Fantasy VI HD
Either high res 2D, or a slightly toon shaded 3D version. You know you'd buy it.

1. NES - 143
2. Genesis - 80
3. SNES - 77
4. Colecovision - 65
5. Game Boy - 44
6. Atari 2600 - 31
7. Neo Geo MVS - 30

All the rest are in the 20's or lower. The period between 1980-1995 is the heart and soul of my collection.

Classic Video Games / Re: Your biggest classic gaming accomplishments

Over the weekend I legitimately beat Life Force for NES for the first time. For my whole life, I've never managed to do it until now!

Snake Rattle n Roll continues to destroy me though.

If you like brawlers like Dragon's Crown, you need Code of Princess.

Rune Factory 4 is also pretty good if you like Harvest Moon type games. I'm a sucker for Japanese fantasy games.

Best Console Game of 2013:
Dragon's Crown

This game is pure fun, with a surprising amount of depth and a bold art style.

Best Handheld Game of 2013:
Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

For me, the Zelda series had been ailing for a long time. The fun sense of adventure has been slowly drifting away from each successive game. This new Zelda managed to completely change that. Exploration and fun is back! I also appreciate the new graphic style they went with. More Zelda games like this please!

Best Game of 2014:
Dark Souls II

Because it will be  ;D

I'll probably watch it, hoping that the Leafs will squash the Wings.  ;)

I'm a longtime Kings fan, thankful to the Leafs for Scrivens (and Frattin too).

For me, it's games only. No hardware, posters, action figures, or any other weird stuff.

Dragon's Crown (Vita)
Super Mario 3D World (Wii U)
Shock Troopers (MVS)
Burning Fight (MVS)
Super Ghouls n Ghosts (SNES)
Zero Wing (Mega Drive)
Spectron (Colecovision)
Crime Patrol (Sega CD)
