Video Game Database Discussion / Re: Category/Platform Requests 2.0
« on: July 25, 2019, 07:11:54 pm »
Is there really a requirement to split Mac OS when X was released? Does it need to have a whole separate category, when PC does not have separate categories for DOS, Windows and NT derivitives?

It's true, if the PC category doesn't distinguish between DOS and Windows, combining the Mac Classic and OS X sections into one single Mac category makes sense.

On one hand, OS X was a completely new system from a coding standpoint, and not directly compatible with any software from OS 9 and below. On the other hand, they were never competing platforms, since OS X was the direct successor for "Mac version" software.

To make cataloguing simpler, I'll vote for combining them.

Mac [EU]
Mac [JP]
Mac [NA]

Requesting a revamp of the Mac section. Currently we have:

Apple Macintosh Classic [NA]
Apple Mac Classic [EU]

Apple Mac OS X (Intel) [EU]
Apple Mac OS X (Intel) [NA]
Apple Mac OS X (PowerPC) [NA]
Mac OS X [JP]

I propose changing it to:

Mac Classic [EU]
Mac Classic [NA]

macOS [EU]
macOS [JP]
macOS [NA]

The reason for the Mac Classic change is just to unify the names between the NA and EU regions, and "Mac Classic" is what Apple called the old system in its last days.

The current system was renamed from "Mac OS X" to simply "macOS" a few years ago. At this point I think it would make the most sense to combine the Intel and PowerPC sections into one "macOS [NA]", since they're still technically the same base system.

Off Topic / Re: Your favorite amusement parks and rides
« on: July 07, 2019, 03:50:55 am »
I love theme parks and roller coasters! I've never been to Cedar Point, but I've a ton of good stuff about it. I hope to go some day! These are some of the ones I've been to:

Disneyland - Anaheim, CA - One of the old greats. Space Mountain and Big Thunder will always be favorites. Special mention to the Rocket Rods, a short lived ride from 1999 or so. It was a high speed ride built on the old raised Peoplemover track. Since the old track didn't have banked turns, it had to slow down on each curve. But it was so fun when it was working! The track to it still stands above Tomorrowland as a remnant curiosity to this day.

Knott's Berry Farm - Buena Park, CA - A park very close to Disneyland, and slightly older. Silver Bullet is an amazing hanging coaster with a smooth ride, one of my favorites of any park.

Six Flags Magic Mountain - Valencia, CA - THE roller coaster park, possibly the best in the country? It has so much to ride, it's crazy. X2 is a bizarre coaster with pods sticking out of the central train. You sit in these pods, and they can spin independently of the train. It's great. Another one, Ninja, is a comparatively simple coaster for modern standards, but still great fun as your hanging car swings through the trees.

Washuzan Highland - Kojima, Japan - I went here as a teen in 2000. It's a park at the top of a hill overlooking the ocean. It was a workday when we went, so almost no one was there. Imagine going to an empty amusement park and riding anything with no wait lines. It was a fun, but rather small park.

Europa Park - Rust, Germany - A fairly large park with some strong "knockoff" Disneyland vibes. They've got a large sphere like Epcot does, a teacup ride, and a cool Pirates of the Caribbean style ride called "Pirates of Batavia", with Asian pirates. There was a really nice Mercedes sponsored roller coaster too.

Heide Park - Soltau, Germany - Sorta like a Six Flags park, but in Germany! A fantastic park that focuses on thrill rides. A lot of coasters were really fun. One called "Flug der Dämonen" (Flight of the Demons) is similar to X2 from Magic Mountain. Oddly though, one of the most pure fun things I saw there was a simple boat ride called "Topilaula Schlacht". You get in a boat that has a row of seats on each side. These seats all have water cannons on them that you can fire. But what do you fire at? Well the twisty river path that the boats travel down is also lined with water cannons, and random park-goers can man these cannons to blast water at the people in the boats! Everyone in the boats will focus fire on whoever is at these cannons. You could stand and watch the water war for an hour and not get tired of it.

No need to swap any chips. It's region free, so a Japanese game will work in your European Game Boy.

Triple post? Geez, I gotta stop trying to use this site on my phone. Three strikes, I'm out...

Edit: double post...

I feel like the more silly sports games have fallen by the wayside too. NBA Jam, NFL/NBA street, and all the great xtreme sports games like SSX and Tony Hawk  :'(

I think this is a big part of it. Game companies usually focus way too much on making sports games too realistic. The focus is usually to create an overly complicated "experience" for the user, rather than simply making a fun game.

Consider this: What are some of the sports games that everyone remembers fondly? Tecmo Bowl and NBA Jam. Both found the perfect mix of "realism" by having real-life rosters, but also focusing solely on what makes basketball and football fun. Both sports fans and everyday gamers can enjoy them.

I want more crazy sports games like Mutant League Hockey, Pigskin 621 A.D., or Super Baseball 2020 (an excellent game that shows how baseball will be next year!).

I was born in 1984, so I took in a ton of late '80s though '90s stuff.

The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! was an early favorite. I was obsessed with Nintendo and to me Lou Albano played the perfect Mario. They had wacky live action skits mixed with animated segments. On Fridays it became an animated Legend of Zelda show too!

Lots of others too:

Heathcliff
Dennis the Menace
Inspector Gadget
Transformers
GI Joe
TMNT
Mega Man animated series
Duck Tales
Goof Troop
Animaniacs
old Looney Tunes and Disney shorts
Sailor Moon
Ranma 1/2
Batman Animated Series
The Simpsons

Probably lots of others I'm forgetting  ;D

The Colecovision is definitely worth it if you enjoy older arcade games. Pepper II, Burgertime, Frogger, Montezuma's Revenge, Tutankham, Spy Hunter, Mouse Trap, and lots of others... they all got really solid ports on the system.

The most I've probably paid for a Colecovision game was about $30 for Mr. Do's Castle. It's cheap-ish to get games for, and a lot of them are solid old fun.

Elemental Master is a fantasy themed vertical shooter with cool graphics and awesome music.

Gauntlet IV gets overlooked a lot, but it has a great soundtrack that's exclusive to the Genesis by Hitoshi Sakimoto. He's the guy who went on to do tons of RPG soundtracks, like Final Fantasy Tactics, Valkyria Chronicles, and Dragon's Crown.

I think I'm obligated to buy any game involving these two:

Tron Bonne

And her clone, Risky Boots

Off Topic / Re: Does anyone know about manga?
« on: September 13, 2018, 04:45:10 am »
For awhile I was really into finding obscure English-release manga from 2002 and earlier.

Viz's '90s releases of Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku, and the early Ranma versions. Oddball titles like Futaba-kun Change (a Ranma clone), Silbuster, and Sorcerer Hunters.

I've also got just about all of Central Park Media's old NSFW releases, like Time Traveler Ai, Chirality, Midnight Panther, Legend of Lemnear, and the super rare (but admittedly terrible...  ::) ) Fantasy Fighters.

Modern Video Games / Re: Anybody play Fire Emblem Heroes?

I still do in occasional bursts.

I'm pretty mad that I didn't get the recent summer Camilla. I've been pretty lucky until now in getting the special summons. I must've pumped nearly 300 orbs over the last month, but she never showed up.

The game seems to be very crafty about noticing when you're only targeting one summon color. Suddenly that color will stop showing up among the "random" color choices.

I love fighting games, but I also don't really play competitively. Mostly for fun.

For Street Fighter V, usually Vega and Karin are my go-tos.  :D

This is him at his best though

I wish so bad that they'd make a new 2D Mario game that looked like this. Bring to life all that amazing artwork from the NES instruction manuals.  :)
