Hardware and Tech / New PC Build
« on: March 19, 2012, 04:11:43 pm »
I've built computers off and on for ~ 8 years now and I think it's about time I build a new one for myself. I've been totally out of the PC world for ~ 2 years beyond maintenance and random parts here and there for other people.

Here's what I'm looking at (suggestions welcome):

Mobo:  ASRock 970 EXTREME4 AM3+ (crossfire/sli, 6Gb/s SATA, etc)
Processor:  AMD FX-6200 (3.8ghz-OC to 4.1, 6-core)
*Graphics Card:  ?
RAM:  8GB G.Skill Ripjaws X Series (DDR3 1333 - not the fastest but I don't see it hindering anything)
PSU:  Coolmax ZU Series 700W Modular (Will have to be replaced if I go Crossfire some day)

The other stuff is just going to get jacked from my current PC. I have a couple of nice disk drives, an extra 1TB internal drive for storage, a 1TB external on my network, etc.

I also have a nice case that I'm going to reuse which is the Thermaltake Bach VX:

What do you PC guys think?

Some of you have probably already seen this, but I just did. BTW...can't figure out how to make the vid start out on the first frame. Don't worry, it's not a porno :)

Modern Video Games / The 3DS Games Discussion
« on: March 05, 2012, 05:22:06 pm »
So I've had a 3DS since launch and only recently started picking up games for it. I have:

Ocarina of Time
Bust-A-Move Universe
Ridge Racer 3D
Asphalt 3D (give me a break, it was $3)
Tales of the Abyss (ordered)

There aren't that many options out there right now and I really want to get into the system before they start putting out great stuff on the Vita and my 3DS takes a back seat.

I was about to head out and pick up RE: Revelations but thought I'd check with the community first. Has anyone played it? Anything else I should consider (other than Mario Kart and Mario Bros.)?

Modern Video Games / Devil Survivor 2

I got this game in the mail today and I must say, pretty freaking good.

They basically took the first game, tweaked it a bit (for the better), and so far so good.

If you like SMT games/SRPG games/RPGs in general, check it out.

Modern Video Games / Corpse Party
« on: February 23, 2012, 09:06:54 pm »
So I just finished the first chapter in Corpse Party on PSP. And yeah. If you're into survival horror/mystery/problem solving games then you have to check it out.

I didn't even know something exactly like this existed.

The launch trailer doesn't show the game play but it's 2D sprite based with popup character dialogue. Pretty nice.

Classic Video Games / Ninja Gaiden on Master System...What?
« on: February 15, 2012, 08:02:15 pm »
So I'm a pretty big Ninja Gaiden fan and I just found out that there's on on the Master System (live under a rock, I know). It seems to be pretty pricey on ebay complete. Has anyone spent some time with it? How does it compare to the offerings on the NES?

For that matter, what else am I missing on the Master System? I only have R-Type and Shinobi. I've never really messed with the Master System stuff. This has my interest peaked.

Mine is from Earthworm Jim. The Descent (Genesis Version):

Not really as epic as some of the RPG music out there, but I still love it!

Classic Video Games / NeoGeo Pocket Color

I've wanted one for a long time. I was looking through auctions tonight and they seem fairly reasonable there. Does anyone have one? What do you think? Any particular games I should look out for?

Also, if anyone has one for sale (preferably in the box) pm me!

Hardware and Tech / What to do with loose games?
« on: February 06, 2012, 10:42:46 pm »
Thought I'd start a thread to discuss custom label/case options for various carts/discs. @azai392 started a thread earlier today asking about N64 case options and I've been toying with a little project this evening that ended up solving my issue of loose GBA games.

I snagged some GBA box scans turned into DS labels from: http://thecoverproject.net

I ordered some empty DS cases directly from Nintendo: Nintendo Store (US)

I took the images to OfficeMax and had them printed on "100 lb Elite Glossy Text" paper (practically the same thing Nintendo uses). I also had them use a LaserJet printer.

And finally, I cut out the labels and popped them into the cases.

Everything came out better than I expected.

The lighting sucks since it's midnight and my phone's camera doesn't get along with the glossy cover on the cases. Regardless, here are a few pics of what I ended up with (they don't look hazy in person):

Just because I had a case-less DS game lying around:

There is literally no difference in this versus the label for the game. It's really crazy how well it turned out. If you feel the paper on any of my complete DS games and compare you can't tell a difference.

I'll eventually have the boxes to all of the games I did this for but honestly, I'll probably start displaying all of my GBA games like this. They fit much better on my shelves and I don't have to worry about messing up the original boxes.

The total project cost me ~$40. It would have been less but I had to buy an Exacto knife and a Triangle for the cutting since I'm anal and didn't trust the people who printed the covers to cut them. I ordered 20 game cases from Nintendo for ~$20 and the printing was ~$10.

I'm very happy with the results besides Mario Kart. I'll probably spend some more time getting the top just right so there isn't that little extra white on the top of the spine...like I said, I'm anal :)

Has anyone else tackled this type of project? Would love to see some pics if you have!

Off Topic / Movies
« on: February 06, 2012, 11:48:52 am »
I'm an avid movie goer as well as a game collector so I thought I'd start a movies discussion!

I've been into older movies as of late. Over the past few weeks I've seen My Fair Lady, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Father of the Bride (the original), and The Professionals.

I'm just getting into the movies of the 50s and 60s. I can see inspiration from many of them in newer movies that I really enjoy.

Just for fun I'll throw in my top 3 movies ever (no order):

Lost in Translation
The Royal Tenenbaums
Donnie Darko (obviously)

I'm going with 3 because these are always on the top of my top 5-10 lists. None of them have budged since I first saw them. If I had to pick 2 more, 1 would be Blood Simple and the other would be up for debate. 4 & 5 have a tendency to move around a lot.

What are some of your favorites and what have you been watching lately?

Modern Video Games / Final Fantasy XIII-2 Early Impressions
« on: February 03, 2012, 11:27:48 am »
So I haven't bitten the bullet and purchased FFXIII-2 yet. To be honest, I really, really disliked the direction the game went with XIII. Having said that, if you are in the same boat as myself, or even if you're not, you should watch this video.

Early Impressions: Final Fantasy XIII-2

IMO he makes several good points about the direction of RPGs in general.

At any rate, it's a great vid to stimulate a discussion.

This is all over the internet today so I'm sure most of you have read something about this device, but if you haven't, behold! I'll be ordering this beast as quickly as possible if it's real!
