You DO have to download EVERY game, even if it's on a disc.

I don't believe it is EVERY game though, I have at least one game that didn't when I had my internet go out.  I am going to test this theory on a few games.

Having said that, it's very easy to get an external drive set up connected to an Xbox (the S model at least has a USB port on the back for that reason), so it may be cheaper to buy a system with a smaller drive & an external. Unless you prefer an all-in-one unit, then plan accordingly.

FYI, the original XBOX One console also had the USB port to use an external HDD.  I've been using the same external HDD since the beginning on all three of my XBOX One consoles.  :)

If you game on PC, there's pretty much no reason to bother with one.

I disagree.  Having a good media hub (the XB console itself) and 4K bluray player with the S/X is quite awesome.  Especially if you have an HDR 4K TV.  It makes a huge difference watching a movie on that instead of a smaller PC monitor.  And I say this as someone with a killer PC audio system and a 46" high quality low lag HDTV TV as a computer monitor.  Plus the simple fact of having XBOX and XBOX 360 backwards compatibility alone makes it a must buy.  Essentially 3 systems in one with the best version of the XBOX style controller and all of the other ancillary features make an XBOX One a good buy.

Since I got a newer television, and some Xbox One games and a controller already. I'm thinking about buying an Xbox One console soon. Maybe after Christmas. Anyone care to give me your experiences with these devices?

Is there any negative surprises with these things? do I need an Xbox online account to play games offline? does this thing need to download or install every single Xbox or Xbox360 game from the disc before playing it like a PC?

Is this console worth the big money they charge for it? I trust all of your inputs before googling every single detail.

I saw a topic about someone asking about the Xbox One X but it was a vary shallow thread. but this thread is for both the Xbox One S or X or Original

I own all three XBOX One consoles.  I’ll try and answer your Q’s the best I can.

1. You can play games offline no problem.  You’ll only need an XBOX Live account if you play on using the social features, buy digital games from the Microsoft store and or collect achievements.  I also believe you need an account (doesn’t have to be paid) if you want to use backwards compatibility because you have to download the XBOX and XBOX 360 games.
2. If you have a 4K TV with or without HDR an X is worth it.  If you have HDR an X is a must.  I also enjoy the better frame rates the extra hardware muscle the X gives me.
3. An S is only good if you want to play 4K blu rays otherwse it has zero impact on the gaming. I bought my S because it was cheap and my original XBOX One’s power supply fried after several thousand hours of gaming and being left on 24/7 for years.  The S and X won’t have that PSU problem.

thanks for the input @jce3000gt  :)

No problem.  I also wanted to mention about the XBOX and XBOX 360 games that if you have the disc you download the game for free.

Off Topic / Re: Amazom Prime membership really worth the $12?
« on: July 24, 2019, 12:05:34 am »
A "scam"?  Treating their employees "badly"?  "Amazon is an evil empire".  Wow, that's pretty inflammatory.

Lastly, I've always had great customer service when I've had to contact them--they are very pro-consumer which is something that is NOT standard today.

So here's the thing: Amazon is very pro-consumer... to the point of being anti-worker. Like I said, I live near Seattle, I have friends in Seattle & other local warehouses. Here's the deal: you're put in charge of a single order. You have a scanner, with a timer counting at all times. It tells you were an item is, and also how long they expect you to take finding & scanning it. You can easily end up in a situation where you have to move the length of a football field in-between items, and you're given a minute and a half to do so regardless of how long you've been working or what else you're hauling around from said order. Can't find a thing? Scan rate drops & you're in trouble. Can't move fast enough through the massive warehouse? Scan rate drops & you're in trouble. Stop to use the bathroom? Don't be surprised if your boss is standing outside when you leave becuase your scan rate dropped too low. 12 hour days are common & often mandatory. That's just the packers- delivery drivers are often subcontractors paid by order delivered, so the hours are longer, the pay is worse, and there's no benefits. The typical wages regardless of where you're working are minimum or close-to, so many employees qualify for (and need) government services to get by- which Amazon does not pay for, as their city contracts exempt them from taxes. It's definitely a point of contention around here.

I don't think evil empire is necessarily off the mark. Not specifically trying to stop anyone from shopping there, mind you- but it's in the vein of Walmart for cost/convenience vs. worker exploitation, so if you care about that kind of thing, it should be affecting your shopping habits.

FYI, this is not anything new or uniquely reflective of Amazon.  This is how businesses and especially distribution centers and delivery drivers work and have worked for decades.  Been there and done that myself.  If you don't like where you work for whatever reason, even legitimate or not, change your situation and find somewhere else to work.  I'm not defending it, I'm merely pointing out that this is not a uniquely Amazon problem.  And if there are any labor violations then it is your responsibility to report it to the appropriate authorities.  I don't have sympathy for anyone who doesn't look to change a bad situation and report illegal labor practices.

Also, the fact that you say "there are no benefits" is a result of them pushing the minimum wage to that stupid $15/hr thing and also if they are contract labor.   Amazon ditched the bonus structure and lowered hours to their employees when they raised the minimum wage.  But that's a whole other subject I don't want to get in to due to it being political.  And if you "care about that sort of thing" in regards to your last statement you better not buy anything anywhere in person or online.  Newsflash, it is shit everywhere.  I know I've lived it for 10 years before I bettered myself by changing careers and finding a suitable job.  Yes it is wrong, but good luck trying to avoid it by "buying goods elsewhere" when they all do it.  Just a fact unfortunately.  Gotta pick your poison in life and do what ever makes you happy.   8)

I don't think so. I just cancelled actually. Reason being I was under the expectation that you would actually receive your orders in 2 days. Nothing I ever ordered with Prime came in 2 days, and yes I'm only counting business days. All of my Prime orders have came within 3 - 5 days. I get the same speed of shipping, or faster from random eBay sellers.

Definitely your area and or you do not have enough local courier companies delivering them themselves.  I get packages pretty much 99% when it says I should get it.

Quote
I think they make 2-day shipping sound like you'll literally get it that fast. Customer service told me no, you won't. They can take however long they want in processioning, and they do in order to save themselves money. So why was I paying a bunch up front for Amazon to ship my stuff at a standard rate of speed? Made no sense. So I cancelled. I kinda see it as a scam. Deceptive advertising. Lousy company. They also treat their employees really poorly or so I've heard. I hate what they've done to the retail business. Amazon is the evil empire.

A "scam"?  Treating their employees "badly"?  "Amazon is an evil empire".  Wow, that's pretty inflammatory.  I hope you realize Prime has more benefits than just expedited free shipping.  Obviously tens of millions of people or more disagree with you as well.  Lastly, I've always had great customer service when I've had to contact them--they are very pro-consumer which is something that is NOT standard today.  While I like a brick and mortar stores unfortunately you gotta evolve or be crushed.  It is just the nature of evolution and Amazon has cornered the market on the consumer goods marketplace so if you see that as an "evil empire" thing then you really must hate pretty much everything ever designed, made and or sold.  I suspect what happened here is you had one or two bad experiences and judge the entire system negatively based on your personal experience.  And you do realize even if you get Prime packages delivered to you at the standard shipping speed IT IS STILL FREE whereas the standard non-Prime shipping IS NOT when you aren't a Prime member.  So you are still getting a net benefit from being a Prime member--and that pretty much debunks your "scam" comment.

Life's too short to get this worked up over something petty mate.  Have a drink and fire up a game and relax.   8)

Classic Video Games / Re: PS2 clones and alternatives
« on: July 23, 2019, 05:03:40 am »
Dunno what to say, I've kept my PS2 fat from 2001 clean from dust, never used dirty discs and turned the power switch off when not in use and still looks and behaves as if I just bought it and took it out of the box.  My buddy who bought his on the same day I did has had numerous problems and he has since replaced it entirely with a newer model.  I firmly believe in the care taken and basic maintenance (cleaning dust mainly) while using electronics matters.

As for PS2 clones, I wasn't aware there were any that played PS2 discs.  I'd like to see what if any of you have, I find the whole clone thing fascinating.

Based on the nothing you currently know about them, which one would you pick?

XBOX.  Because Sony is too anti-consumer for my taste.  One of the worst on planet earth.    And I like the controller layout and UI better on XBOX.

Off Topic / Re: Cost Of Living In Your Area And Upkeep?

I really want to move to Colarado or some rocky mountain wilderness, but of course it's hard to start life a new when everything you have and all the people you know are already in one place.

Do it my friend, you only live once.  This is one of the reasons why the wife and I are moving to the rocky mountains (though in a different state that likes the constitution because CO doesn't).

Like ^ bikingjahuty we are getting a HUGE influx of people from out of state here in TX (and like CO we are getting way too many people from CA), more than we are losing and it is significantly impacting our cost of living here.  Our house value doubled in 7 years and the cost of living in TX is starting to get to the point of ludicrousness for us natives on about everything but petrol.  Our property taxes are pretty high though we don't have a state income tax so at least that evens out...sort of.  Thankfully the wife, child and I will be moving to the northwest (ID) in the country and will enjoy (at least for a while) the cheaper cost of living versus what we have here.  By the time it goes up a significant amount our mortgage will be paid for and we won't care. :)

Thank god the wife and I make a very good living...
Texans should feel welcome here. We have a saying, “Idaho Is What America Was”.

Thank you.  So far every native Idahoan (Idahoan?) has been super nice and welcoming...you know...like Texas USED to be.  Both my wife and I are libertarians and hugely pro-constitution so we'll add to the right kind of voting pool to keep ID as free as possible.  The two areas we're looking at were Idaho City and Island Park.  Though Idaho City may be the winner due to a few factors.  But that's for another discussion.  :)

So was there a spark that re-ignited the passion? as in a specific game or console or was it more of the idea of collecting games again?

it was more a series of games for me and all on the XBOX 360.  I moved away from PC a lot and moved more towards console at that time.
