General / Looking for your opinion PS4 pro vs Apple Watch
« on: June 28, 2019, 01:03:30 am »
First of all, feel free to delete this if this isn’t the place for it.

So my birthday is coming up and my wife asked me what I want. I’m torn between a PS4 pro and an Apple Watch. I currently have an OG PS4 hooked up to a 1080p 120hz tv. I’m wondering if the pro upgrade would be worth it for the improved frame rate/super sampling. I like the idea of an Apple Watch but with a new model possibly being announced in September I could just ask for the new one for Christmas. I know this is kind of a first world problem but I just figured I’d get some other peoples opinions on the matter

General / Are save states in retro games cheating?
« on: May 29, 2019, 04:45:57 pm »
I've been playing the Castlevania Collection on the Switch and originally I had no intention of using save states; but I'm at the point where I'm not sure if I have to time to beat some of these old games with out them. I kinda have mixed feelings about it, on one hand, save states don't do anything to make the encounters easier; ie the enemies arent nerfed and I'm not buffed; but on the other the game originally did not have the ability to save, so you are playing the game in a way that the creators never intended.

I think I'm leaning towards not cheating, the more I think about it I start to realize that saving in a game has pretty much become the standard and that if the original developers created the same games now, they would probably have followed modern trends and included the ability to save your progress.

Thoughts? Opinions?

I've been collecting for a while now, and the whole time I've told myself I'm not going to do the flashcart/everdrive thing and only collect the real things.. But today I ran into an issue and its got me kinda rethinking my rule. I grabbed my copy of Golden Sun for the GBA off the shelf, popped it and started playing it. This would my first time playing the game, I've always heard great things about the game and being a huge RPG fan I was really excited to get it started. So I'm playing through the intro and like most RPGs this takes a while and you generally have to sit through a bit of story before you get a chance to save. I finally get to the point where I can save and I get a strange error telling me it cant find the backup memory or something like that. At this point I'm thinking no big deal, I've run into dead batteries before and havent had any issues replacing them, I'll just heat up the soldering iron and take care of it real quick; but when I cracked the cart open... there was no battery. At first I thought maybe someone put a bootleg board in there, but it checks out. Golden Sun used flash memory, no battery need. It turns out sometimes the flash memory just goes bad. I did some research and everyone just says to buy a new copy.

I could just go on ebay and buy another copy... but who's to say that game won't suffer from the same issue at some point. I'm sitting here looking at my collection, wondering how many of these awesome games might have issues down the road.. I knew that physical media wouldn't last forever, but this is legitimately the first game I've run into that didn't work and wasn't just something that was dirty or scratched. I have no plans to stop collecting physical media... but it might be time to start thinking about alternative methods of playing my games.

So with all that said, what are you thoughts on flashcarts, roms, backup media?

Hardware and Tech / New DMG Build. Backlight, Bivert, and reshell
« on: December 03, 2018, 02:16:31 am »
Pretty happy with the way this one turned out although I got excited and rushed part of it, so there's a smudge under the screen. I suppose I could disassemble it and fix that though.

Classic Video Games / Bought an NES game with the wrong board in it...
« on: October 17, 2018, 08:03:06 pm »
I was recently in Denver on vacation and picked up a few games at a local shop. I've been home for a couple of weeks now and finally got around to doing my normal cleaning and testing before I add the games to my shelf; One game wouldn't load after my initial cleaning so I decided to crack it open to get it a deeper cleaning, inside... there was a color dreams board.... someone swapped out the board on me... feels bad. It was a cheap game too, its not even worth me getting in contact with the shop to do anything about it.

General / I'm playing a game on easy... and I'm not ashamed.
« on: June 13, 2018, 04:00:48 pm »
I recently started playing The Last of Us Remastered and I found myself replaying a few spots several times just because I kept dying. Now I'm not the best gamer in the world but I'm not terrible either, normally I would just keep playing the same part over and over again till I eventually got it, but I kinda had an epiphany last night. I'm old(ish) now and I just don't have the time to devote to games like I used to, if I keep replaying the same stuff over again I'm just wasting time. I went ahead and dropped the difficulty level and I'm really ok with it. I'm able to keep a consistent pace and the story isn't being interrupted by me dying like 10 times. The game is almost more enjoyable now! I think going forward when I play any of these more "cinematic" games, I'm just going to start right off on easy. In the end I'm really playing these games for the story anyway.

Classic Video Games / Can anyone help with some info on games I found?
« on: April 25, 2018, 05:55:18 pm »
So I found some old Dungeons and Dragons PC games today and picked them up just cause I thought they looked interesting. I know nothing about old pc games and just thought I could use them to trade or sell them. Anyone have any info on what they might be worth or do we have any pc collectors that have equipment that would be willing to help test them?

I have a sealed PSOne and am currently looking for a Sega CD (model 2 preferably) and Sega 32X and games for each. Would also entertain other offers if someone is interested.

Every once and while I get hit with the itch to play an old game that I used to love, but sometimes what I really want the feeling of that old game but with a pretty new face lift. A while back I asked about Modern games that would feel like SSX. Now I've had the hankering to play some Gran Turismo 2/3. Figured I's start a thread to get some recommendations as well as open it up for other people to ask for modern game recommendations as well.

So! What game is going to give me the feel of my old GT 2 and 3, Does the newest GT hold up? are there better options out there for me?

AND what are some games that you miss playing but would love to find a modern replacement for?

General / Physical Space limiting your collection and downsizing.
« on: February 17, 2018, 03:18:40 pm »
I recently ran into an issue where I'm running of out space for my games. My shelf that houses my PlayStation games (all generations and handhelds) is full, and my Nintendo, Sega, Xbox shelf is damn near close. I started first by just getting rid of all my sports titles, I have absolutely no interest in the Maddens and all that crap; although I am holding on to some of the more interesting ones like Blitz and other unique sports games. After that purge I'm already full up again, so now I'm thinking about pruning games which I own multiple versions of. Like why do I need Retro City Rampage for PS4, Vita, and Switch...  Now I'm kinda stuck. On one hand, I could sell those duplicate titles and put the money back into some of the more expensive titles I've been looking but on the other hand, I'm toying around with the idea of just "removing" them from my collection and putting them into storage till have more room some day.

I'm interested to hear if any of you ran into a similar situation and what you've done about it.

General / When do you consider a Mario Kart game "beat"
« on: February 13, 2018, 01:57:30 pm »
I've been playing Mario Kart 8 and was just wondering when everyone considers a Mario Kart game beat. I'm almost done with 50cc and about to move on to the next.

Modern Video Games / Amzon shipping different region games?
« on: February 04, 2018, 01:27:49 am »
I ordered a copy of Gears of War 4 from amazon from this listing
And the copy that came had the pegi rating on it instead of the esrb rating that im used to.. Now i know the xbox isnt region locked but i'm kinda weird and would like all my games to be the US versions..

So i guess the question is did i misread the listing? i cant find anywhere on there that says its not the US version.
