Gone back to an old save file for Persona on PSP.

Now I remember why I put it down for a full year.

Although it does a lot of things well and in novel ways (in regards to its original 1996 release), it has too little narrative and too much dungeon slogging and random battles. This is tiresome.

I’ve also been playing Leap of Fate on PS4. This is a really fun twin-stick rogue-lite. Fast paced but also the sort of game you can pick up, play for 60 min, put down, and feel like it was gaming time well spent.

LRG are release The Game Paradise Cruisin’ Mix Special for PS4 this Friday. Never mind that it’s already got a physical in Japan and has full English support....
Ignore this post. Degica (then verified in conversation with LRG) have confirmed this release is indeed different from the Japanese edition.

For starters, the standard release, at 39.99, will include the 29.99 digital came, and 30 USD of DLC (Homura, Claire, and voice pack).

The Collector’s Edition, at 99.99, includes a fourth DLC (Tatsujin), and a boatload of physical extras.

And today, LRG have pulled Super Mutant Aliens Assault from sale due to discovery of a trophy bug.... that’s been around for 2 years.

Also, SLG apparently will announce a Switch release for this weekend, to go with the PS4 release of Wonder Boy Returns.

Jan 24th - EastAsiaSoft are releasing Oniken + Odallus Collection. You can buy each separately for PS4 (or buy both and they throw in a slipcover) or one one cart for Switch.

Jan 25th - Limited Run Games has Jak II, Tacoma, and lord knows what else.

Jan 27th - Strictly Limited Games will be selling Wonder Boy Returns.

FYI, Vita fans: the first casualty of the cart production ending has been announced, YIIK has been axed.

Classic Video Games / Re: The top 5 games that defined your childhood
« on: January 19, 2019, 06:38:54 pm »
I’m defining childhood as anything up to around the time I started my teen years, FWIW.

King’s Quest (Apple IIe) - not my oldest gaming memory but probably the first with any lasting impact. Started a love affair with (then) PC gaming and the adventure genre.

Super Mario Bros (NES). - it only brought me back to consoles after I dismissed Ataris and Colecovisions (as a haughty 8-9 year old) as pure crap. No big deal.

Ultima VI: The False Prophet (MS-DOS) - I stupidly didn’t get into the earlier Ultimas “because graphics” (hey, I was a stupid kid), but when I finally did, my God. There are still few RPGs that understand the “R” part better than this game.

Blazing Lazers (TG-16) - Every vertically scrolling shooter has to meet the expectations firmly set in my brain by this one. I can still hear the first stage soundtrack clearly (and I haven’t owned or played a TG-16 in nearly 30 years).

Phantasy Star II (Gen). Best JRPG ever. Then, and now. It holds up. Fight me.

Bunny Must Die! Chelsea and the 7 Devils, on Vita. I love this game and its brilliant level design, but I hate the sluggish controls and how my thumbs hurt after a play session. The dev was definitely a sadist.

Short answer: yes, all the damn time. Why? Life happens.

Longer (but still not introspective) answer: In high school.... I just sorta of lost interest around 1993, but I got back into it hard in 1994 when I saw a friend playing Final Fantasy III. I rode that wave to Chrono Trigger and beyond. But then with the release of the Saturn and PlayStation I fell out of love again, as the crude polygons just weren’t (then) enticing me. I was also fiercely focused on getting good grades in university, and it wasn’t until 1998 when Metal Gear Solid and Gran Turismo hit that I ultimately plunged back in. Even then, I kept my gaming systems at my parents 500 km away while I was in school. I didn’t bring my consoles to campus until my very last year when I had perfected my study regime and knew gaming wouldn’t interfere.

I enjoyed the PS2/GC/Xbox era fairly guilt free for a few years, but a professional postgraduate program again saw me put gaming down (not drop it, but just ignore it) for years. It wasn’t until 2010 that I got back in and bought a PS3. I played off and on and even got a PS4 (in 2016) but it wasn’t until this past year that the hobby has brought me back fever pitched. Funny thing is, I have less time to play games now with my responsibilities in both my career and life as a parent than I ever did previously, but I’m not sad. I’ve struck a nice balance, and play when I can (this is why I like handhelds so much) but don’t regret that it will never take a priority over my family, nor would I ever want it to. It’s just a hobby. If I had to quit, I’d walk away anytime knowing it was fun while it lasted, and not have any regrets. Obviously, I don’t intend to do that without some provocation. I get a lot of satisfaction just talking with like minded hobbyists and looking for older titles I missed during my off periods.

This is on my collector’s bucket list of places to go, but right now with a 10 month old, and living roughly 7-8 hours away (incl 2 ferry trips), I just have to pass.

I met Pat at his book signing, seems like a cool dude.  I've seen Ian a few times when I went to Luna, he didn't seem obnoxious when he rang me up.

I don't see anything wrong with Pat (or anyone for that matter) voicing their opinion on anything.
There is nothing wrong with Pat voicing his opinion, just as there is nothing wrong with us voicing our displeasure with how he (or more accurately, Ian) handled it (i.e. poorly, like a child, petulant, etc).

Them: calling people “babies.”

Me: uh, you’re a grown adult in a room full of stuffed animals. Maybe you shouldn’t throw stones?

I’m not ashamed to collect and play video games. I am ashamed of simultaneously how toxic and childish how the people who cover the industry continue to behave. Criticism at a fan event is not analogous with behaving like a baby or acting entitled. It’s how one conducts that criticism that could engender such comments.

There was nothing I saw from BlizzCon that was entitled or childish. The “out of season April fool’s joke” comment could be seen as snarky, but given how people who worship the company’s PC products and strongly dislike mobile, paid money to attend the event, giving a little negative criticism in the face of Blizzard’s tone deaf presentation was more than deserved.
