General / Re: Preffering Old Games Vs Current Generation Games
« on: March 21, 2019, 08:17:08 am »
In general I am still trying to keep up with all the PS4 backlog of games I have. After Kindgom Hearts III I've actually had the time to go back and play some of them - The next new game I am getting will be Sonic Team Racing.. but even that will be withheld for Fridays so I can play co-op. Also, I am trying out a classic for the first time in a while in Final Fantasy V - GBA, while I own the GBA version I am still using a PC Emulator, it just looks so good upscaled to 1080P & I can use my PS4 controller win-win!

I must admit, I do struggle to go back and play older games, sadly, it does come down to trophies, games without the are slightly less appealing and that does come into effect when choosing my next game - It just feels less authentic in some way, which I know is shallow to note. I do want to go back and play some PS1 classics like Grandia, Alundra, Legend of Dragoon & so on but newer releases tend to take priority and with boat-load for a backlog I just rarely get around to it.

Sometimes I can be a hardware barrier, all my PS2 games are still boxed up as I don't have a good method to play them - I bought the Pound PS2 HDMI cable and was very disappointed with it! I have loads of PS2 titles I'd love to try out like Blood Will Tell, but sadly just don't have the means to do so. But with my recent Emulator set up, which looks so much better than playing PS1 games on the PS3, I am hopeful to get around to more classics this year, I'm 12+ hours in Final Fantasy V so I'm doing just fine :)

General / Re: What are your thoughts on buying loose discs?
« on: March 21, 2019, 08:07:34 am »
The only time I have ever bought loose discs is when HMV went into administration and they had stock without front covers on - I got some great deals like Xenoblade Chronicles, World Ends with You, Lightning Returns, Pikmin (Wii) and more for £2 a pop! All the discs were mint too - I did ask and check at the counter, something I always do when it comes to buying Pre-Owned content.

I must admit though, whenever I see loose discs on eBay I cringe, I wonder about the circumstance on how it managed to be separated and how it would have been looked after while loose and it puts me off the sale immediately. I'd never buy Loose disc online, it's hard enough dealing with dishonest sellers with complete sets as it is.

9. Firewatch (PS4):
I snagged it on sale for £4 this weekend and played it in one evening. This is a prime example of what I hope for in an Indie game, while not a AAA budget, it still has enough to not cop out on things like being in 1st person and not seeing your character model pick up things. The game itself was very compelling, well written and I enjoyed my time within the narrative. I have no real complaints, it was a solid experience and one of the best shorter games I've played this gen. I had fun just exploring an getting familiar with the environment and getting involved with the interaction with the dialogue choices - To which you hear your protagonist actually say the line - I hate it when games present a line and skip to the reaction. I don't want to spoil anything but highly recommend it for an evening experience.

Classic Video Games / Re: Who has best cover arts? Japan or US?
« on: March 07, 2019, 08:18:09 am »
I've always been fond of the European Box Art in a lot of cases - In particular with the PS1, I Prefer their Cases with the embossed strip compared to the other standard CD jewel cases.

Also, I will defend the Final Fantasy box art, there is something special about seeing that plain white background with full focus on Amano's Artwork Logo, looking at the USA FF covers I find them too busy filled with characters and no room to breathe. I actually have found it a shame that later FF games haven't kept the traditional blank background and logo design - FFXV was meant to but it doesn't have the PS4 strip at the top making it not look authentic.

Hi,

With the release of more Final Fantasy XV DLC, I find myself in a position once again where I feel DLC simply doesn't suit my way of playing a game.

The thing is, I buy a game and play through the experience, then I am done with it and moving onto something else. When a developer then release a DLC episode or story content that is substantial, I'm reluctant to go back to it as I am playing my next game already. Going back to a game after the experience just to play DLC just doesn't feel right, especially when it is story content set in a certain time-frame within the games adventure - Final Fantasy XV is set within chapters and these Story DLC Episodes are set within the time-frame of chapters midway through the game. I can't just jump into the DLC with the same enthusiasm post game because I just feel I'm done with it - This is why I still haven't even touched FFXV's DLC, other than the stupid cross-over ones as they're effectively post game content.

but I am hearing that Kingdom Hearts III is also getting DLC, which after completing it was obviously lacking post-game content - to the point where there was no point synthesising items or upgrading to the Ultimate Weapon as there was no challenge available to test it with. Now, having moved on to other games of course, the news of upcoming DLC is just nauseating, I'm done with the experience and going back to the game without any of the momentum of a playthrough just feels like a slog.

I get why they do this, because of the importance of having a presence within the Social Media age, but I hate the repercussions of that in getting a game in drips and drabs. I just want to buy a game, day one experience it and be done with it... but them experiences are becoming few and far between with DLC. Now, if I see a game has a Season Pass, I usually wait 6months to a year to see if a Game of the Year/Complete Edition pops up with the DLC all on disc - Still waiting Wolfenstien 2! But when a games still got DLC 2+ years after the release it can be very trying.

I'm jus curious to see what other people think on DLC, as it is something that has really begun to test my patience with the industry as a whole and put me off buying games Day One in general.

I've had many cases of this sadly, to the point where I cannot simply (insert Mordor meme...) post an item 1st Class - Which pee's me off that I have to pay more for tracking, i.e making sure they do their job. I'm currently already making a claim for an item that apparently didn't arrive.

Now, I always send my items through work, it may be a 2-3 day delivery but I can still have tracking on it. But I only have 2 days per week to do so, which is annoying if a buyer buys the item the day after my workshift.

8. Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise (PS4):
The biggest issue I have with this game is it's unwillingness to break away from it's objective structure. There are moments in which say a crisis suddenly appears within the city, but instead of it being an event that suddenly picks up moment, the main character observes this and notes how he will have to discuss this with the city's mayor/leader... and then it cuts to you waking up the next morning and having to talk to them before proceeding to deal with the crisis at hand! The whole game was like this, having nonsensical delays in where the pace should ramp up to 11! It honestly made it a slog to get through, this coming from someone who generally likes Yakuza games too- Which you could call this game a re-skin of them games.

I will say the one part I really did enjoy that felt unique was working in the Bar. I enjoyed the silliness put into making the drinks and getting involved with all the scenarios that would come from meeting people there. But beyond that it's really a lot of the stuff we've seen in Yakuza before - Casinos, Club Management etc. I did actually put effort into watching some of the series before playing to gather context for it, so I didn't just jump in without knowing much about FotNS but I really feel this title is a step back from Yakuza games and I'd really just recommend them instead.

7. The Simpsons Game (PS3)
I recently played through this with a friend, being a rarity of a Co-op game! At first it just seemed really janky and formulaic but there is a section in the later half of the game where you can see where budget went. The game features a lot of fourth-wall breaking and parodies but in the later game it literally parodies other games with levels based on Medal of Honor or one focusing on JRPGs! The creativity in the level design increased dramatically! and the scenarios were really engaging and the game went from just ok to pretty great!

6. Devil May Cry 3 HD (PS4)
I must admit I didn't have a fun time playing this, I was intending to play through the series in prep for 5 but just playing this put me off entirely. the difficulty is very unbalanced, I found once I was able to get Trickmaster to Level 2 I was able to dodge effectively and didn't struggle as much after that, but the opening segment was very frustrating! Also, the story has a lot less depth than I remember, I know it's primarily an action game, but I always thought this title had more historical context being the prequel, but I just found it rather flat. I know Dante is meant to be younger and more cocky, but sometimes I just found him too irritating and not a character I really liked being. I may get back into the DMC series and I am sure I will get 5 someday but for now the series interest is shelved.

I'd say Pokemon Sword & Shield being on the Switch really hit the Nail on the Coffin. .. Has it got any big releases on the way?

Devil May Cry 3 HD (PS4)

I decided to play Devil May Cry in prep for DMC5 in March. I reallyed struggled with the game at first to the point where I was just going to put it off for good. But I found as soon as I was able to upgrade the Swordmaster to Level 2 The game became far more managable! I was struggling with managing to get resources every Mission but I neevr struggled like I did within the first 3 Missions.

The game it self was enjoyable but I must admit it felt much more cheesier than I remember and the overall narrative wasn't the compelling - I think part of it is due to Dante's Younger 'COOL' attitude. I also wasn't t hat keen on one of the later missions which required precision in a platforming section - The standard jump as just so stiff and wasn't so fun.

I might take a break from playing the others to be honest, I felt mixed about the experience overall.

It has been and now gone! But gosh what a ride KH3 was, It was exhilarating from Start to Finish! I loved so much about this title, the graphics while admittedly took a bit of getting used to we're spell-bindingly good! The level design was immensely diverse, instead of the majority of it being rooms with encounters the game offered so many different gameplay features and discoveries, it's certainly the best so far in world projection - As a classic Disney fan,I do admit I wish there was a couple classics represented more but still very content with the worlds we got!

The combat was Amazing though! I had so much fun just exploring all the different Keyblades and Forms – What is cool about this game is that you upgrade each keyblade so all can be used in later game challenges! I loved the way the Disney Rides were utilised as attacks – My favourite one being a Log Float ride which you control around to hit enemies as you release a trail of water, then when the time is up having the float back track in a fun wild ride before striking the final blow! Also having forms activate after doing so much offence was a blast and the transformations are just unreal!

If I had to note a down point it would be the lack of post game content, there were no secret dungeons or Colosseum battles, a collection of easy battles but that was it really - Which is a let down for a series which is known for a boastful amount of post game content.  Beyond that it was a case of grinding and mopping up tasks for the trophies which did drag on a bit due to the lack of content to justify reaching max levels.

But, The game absolutely delivered on a compelling story and one that does justice to a series nearly 20 years old, fans of the series which are undoubtedly playing this already are in for a treat and can sigh a relief it is not the mess that became Final Fantasy XV. This really has been onf of the best PS4 experiences I've had & I'm very grateful for it.

Just incase anyone wanted to catch up on the Mobile game set before the Prequel Game Birth By Sleep, this chap does a very good summary (I'm also adding the Part adaptation in the Movie from 2.8, which if you have time is more entertaining to watch but doesn't cover everything!):

Back Cover (Which Explains the build up to the Keyblade WAR - most of the Mobile game in a CGI movie):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ar9-S9EjIf4

A video explaining the content of the the Mobile Game:

Then... the mobile game got updates in November & December:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5f9XnpqfQI

Watching this clued me up on alot of WTF was going on with this series in this time - I'm still not happy KH put important content in a mobile game but this is by far the best way to access it and make sense of it.

Avert your eyes from the video recommendations at the side as they are containing KH3 content now! Even by the uploader :P

As for the game still having an utter blast. some of the Worlds in this game are the best of the series!

I'm pretty sure the Epilogue has been unlocked now via a free update - When you look at the updates section of the game on PS4 it says so.

Also, I figured out why I hated the Gummi Ship section so much - My Ship had a 0 stat of Speed! Now that I've solved that it's great & I'm also getting plenty of components for weapon upgrades.

I'm about 18 hours in and loving it! Many big series entiries this generation simply haven't lead up to the hype (Final Fantasy XV, Metal Gear Solid V) but this game is everything I dreamed it could be and more! Every world is so rich in detail! and I don't just mean graphically (Which the game is also outstanding in) but there just so much detail in every little crevasse and I've had so much fun exploring around - Unlike the majority of the empty open worlds.

Also, I just love the camaraderie between the main cast, every little cutscene has me so emotionally invested as they're really easy to engage with. I also have to give props to on World in not following the story the world is based off, but making their own scenario - Something I've said the series should do all along and the Worlds Story was so much more engaging from it!

The only thing that is bugging me is the Gummy Ship segments, I appreciate it but the damn ship just moves so Slow! I want to explore but I feel like the speed the ship goes while boost is on should be the natual speed of the airship - probably easily done when upgrading but the system has always been confusing to me. I do love the combat though, there are so many special forms and attacks to utilise that I'ev spent a lot of time just playing about in combat. I like how you can swap Keyblades in battle this time  and how you can upgrade them to keep them relevant.

In regards to the narrative, yes if you haven't played the others... you're going to be lost. Admittedly even 18 hours in I haven't seen much advancement to the overall plot but I'm sure when it hits it will need the context of the previous games - Yes Even Union X, theres an hour summary video on Youtube which coves it well. I've made great efforts to catch myself up on it all so I'm hoping I'll still understand it :P

This really is such a joyus experiences and I look forward to another full day in playing it :)

Firstly the standard pick-ups:

Some decent stuff, Glad to have the Jak Trilogy portable now.

But this is what January 2019 Is ALL ABOUT!:

Both these games seem to really excel in what they offer, I've beat RE2 already but had a blast but Kingdom Hearts III is becoming my favourite PS4 title to date! It's stuffed with rich engaging content and as soon as I hop off here I intend to play even more!

Also, just a shout out to Capcom... They've given PS4 owners so much to be happy about with their Resident Evil releases this generation!:
