You won't find this in the normal Games With Gold offerings, and I have no idea how long it will last. But MX Unleashed for original Xbox is a free download on Xbox Live right now if you're a Ultimate member.

General / Resident Evil Anime Reportedly Coming to Netflix
« on: March 22, 2021, 01:49:39 pm »
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cbr.com/netflix-resident-evil-infinite-darkness-voice-cast-images/amp/

So rumors are popping up again about a Resident Evil Netflix series. We've heard rumors before, and they seemed to fizzle out.

From what I've read this time it's going to be an "anime" instead of live-action. Though the term anime is used loosely as it's really CGI. It will disregard the live-action movies.

It centers around Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield. That leads me to believe it will follow the Resident Evil 2 story, but nothing confirms that. If it does, awesome. My favorite entry in the video game series.

I'm glad we're getting something Resident Evil, but I'm disappointed it's no longer live-action like we were originally going to get.

What do you guys think? Will this actually see the light of day, or be dropped like the live-action series? Do you like the idea of it being an anime?

Site Feedback / Badges

So did these just stop updating? The last item-related one I have is 900 items. Was really wanting to see that 1,000 items badge. I mean, I am a gamer, arbitrary online achievements matter to me. ;)

Just wondering.

Classic Video Games / Atari 2600
« on: March 11, 2021, 02:43:44 pm »
Atari 2600 sucks.

It was barely a part of my childhood before the NES, so I just don't have the nostalgia for it.

The sound is atrocious. The graphics are barely recognizable (that's understandable, at least), and that joystick is stiffer than an Olive Garden breadstick.

That said, it has a very interesting history. I'm enamored with the history behind the early gaming industry even if I'm not a fan of the console. Nolan Bushnell is a very unique guy. And the crap that company went through after he left.

I'm happy it was the innovator that created the gaming industry, but I sold mine due to disinterest.

What are your thoughts on the console?

Classic Video Games / SNES vs Sega Genesis Observation
« on: March 09, 2021, 01:28:13 pm »
I like and enjoy both consoles. But if I had to make the choice I'd go with SNES.

But I've noticed as I get older, my Genesis wishlist continues to grow as my SNES wishlist shrinks.

SNES has more all-time classics. The type of games that made waves in the entire gaming industry still felt to this day with games like Link to the Past, Super Metroid, and Chrono Trigger.

But the Genesis has more hidden gems. I keep unearthing shoot-em ups in its library that I want to get, amongst others.

Just an observation I had.

Can't reply in the News section, so thought I'd start a thread here about it.

Anyone care to speculate on what they think this big news might be? I know I'm curious.

Any admin want to tease us with some more clues?

Not sure when the official launch day is, but there is now an official announcement from them packed into this really fun and nostalgic reunion special they aired a few days ago:

https://youtu.be/eyBq6apzUHg

They haven't lost their chemistry at all, either, since the time these guys have been apart. It was well done.

From articles I read after watching this they plan on streaming, twitch, and cable TV broadcasts.

Off Topic / Console Wars - CBS All Access Exclusive
« on: September 26, 2020, 11:30:02 am »
Watched this last night. Pretty dang good. It went into depth on the 16-bit war, getting interviews with the people on the frontlines such as Tom Kalinske, Howard Phillips, and others.

The first half is the console war from Sega's perspective, and the 2nd half from Nintendo's perspective. Which is a really cool way to approach it. It's not biased, yet at the same time you hear both side's bias.

Sega of America really seems like the underdog fighting against the evil empire, that some how overcomes them despite the odds. Only to fail because of their own in-fighting coming from Sega of Japan. And Nintendo comes off as the miracle-maker that saved gaming in the 80s to grow into the powerhouse it became.

Well worth a watch. Very interesting stuff, and much more in-depth than the stuff you usually see on YouTube about the subject.

Video Game Database Discussion / Dedicated Console vs. Hardware (Categories)
« on: September 26, 2020, 01:47:12 am »
What are the differences between these categories?

I have a TurboGrafx-16 Mini in my collection, which is found under "Dedicated Console". Yet the very similar Super Retrocade, which I also have, is under "Hardware".

I would think these two consoles would be in the same category.

Classic Video Games / PC Games Important to Computer History
« on: August 06, 2020, 02:05:00 pm »
I'm making a computers Family Feud just for my class. For one of the questions I'm trying to come up with a small list of important games to computer history. (Not that it's part of my curriculum, just throwing that one in there for fun.) Help me out here.

Some of the ones I'm using so far:

-Space War!
-Zork
-Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord (Wizardry 1)
-The Oregon Trail
-Sim City
-Wolfenstein 3-D
-Everquest

Good picks? Bad picks? Maybe some other picks instead? Thanks.

We're all geeks and nerds here. So we have our fandoms. And we all wonder if Goku could beat Superman, or something similar. So I thought this might a fun thread to argue about.

Off Topic / Horror Fans Unite

Any other horror fans here?

What kind of stuff are you into? The classic Universal Monsters? Hammer Horror? Drive-in exploitation? VHS-era gorefests? Ghosts stories? Slashers? Zombies? Psychological horror?

I love the 80s-era stuff, personally. That was the golden age of horror. The explosion of VHS's popularity just blew the doors wide open for so many companies to give us so much different, cool stuff. And that was like the peak of practical special effects, which I will take good practical effects over CGI any day. When done right they look better. Plus I'm a sucker for slashers, and the 80s delivered in spades when it came to slashers. I'm not pigeon-holed into just 80s horror films, even though I tend to gravitate towards them, though.

Slashers, vampire movies, zombie movies, and ghost stories are my favorites. The George Romero "of the Dead" series of movies are my all-time favorites. Day of the Dead (1985) bein the best of the bunch, IMO. I'm also a big fan of the Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th franchises. The Lost Boys and Monster Squad were also big influences on me.

Classic Video Games / Collections vs Original Copies
« on: August 05, 2020, 12:11:38 pm »
When you get a collection, such as Mega Man Legacy Collection or Metal Slug Anthology; do you stop seeking out the original copies of those games? Or are you a completionist?

For me, if they are cheap, I'll likely still get the originals. Like the Sonic games for example. But for expensive ones, like the Mega Man series, I'll just stick with the collections.

Modern Video Games / Avengers 2020 Game
« on: August 03, 2020, 01:05:04 pm »

Are you interested in this one?

I was on the fence about it, honestly. From what we've seen it looks like a pretty generic action game. And it's odd since it's based on the movies, but the characters look nothing like the movies. Why not just base it on the comics if you aren't gonna pay for character likenesses?

But recently I heard there's gonna be unlockables and upgradable stuff for your characters. The way I heard it is that fans are upset about it because it looked similar to Destiny's upgrade system. But personally, I like hearing that there's gonna be upgradables and unlockables at all. I mean, that adds a bit more meat to the gameplay than just "beat-up the bad guys then fight a boss". So now I'm a bit interested. May use a little of that sweet stimulus dough to pre-order it, because why not since we have the extra money.

What do you think? Are you gonna check it out?
