Classic Video Games / Let's Name the Top 100 Sega Dreamcast Game Together!
« on: February 18, 2013, 10:28:44 pm »
Sega's final console. It's life was lived short and fast, but in that time a ton of great games were still released for it. It still had tons of potential left in it when the plug was pulled. So let's name our favorites of Sega's swan-song.

This works the same as the other "Let's Name" lists.

Rules:
-Please add only 1 game per post.
-Please allow others to post before posting again (to prevent this from becoming 1 person's list)
-Please do not repeat games that have already appeared on the list.
-This list is not supposed to be in order of greatest-to-least-greatest, it's a build-as-we-go list.
-Multiple entries from the same series are acceptable. For example, if someone has already listed Digital Devil Saga, you can still list Digital Devil Saga 2.

To start off:

1. Resident Evil: Code Veronica

Harrison Ford rumored to return as Han Solo in ‘Star Wars Episode VII

According to sources at Latino-Review, a site with an impeccable history of reporting accurate rumors, Harrison Ford will indeed be playing Han Solo again in a future Star Wars film. Latino Review first broke the news on Fox News Latino where the editor stated, "It’s official. Harrison Ford will reprise his role as Han Solo in the upcoming Star Wars movies.” He went on to state that “His deal is done. It’s just a formality. They haven’t really announced it yet.”

Fans may remember the report that first surfaced back in November where Ford expressed interest in reprising the role once again if the script handled the character in a proper manner. As to whether or not he'll be making an appearance in J.J. Abrams' upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII or the rumored Han Solo stand-alone movie is anyone's guess at the moment. However, we do think it would be a great device to see an older Han Solo being used as a framing device that leads audiences into a flashback, telling the story of his earlier years.

What do you think of the latest rumor regarding Ford's return to the role of Han Solo?

What Was Your Favorite Console Each Generation You Were Gaming?

Mine:

-2nd Generation: Commodore 64 - I actually ended up playing this system well past it's prime. But for me, it was hands-down far beyond anything the Atari 2600 had to offer, in comparison. The only downside being the legendarily long load-times of the 1541 floppy drive. You could literally go make a sandwich and come back and it would still be loading the dang game. But it was worth it, because it had some of the most complex games of the era, rather than the simplistic arcade-style games of the Atari 2600. I especially loved the animated text-adventures like The Swiss Family Robinson. And I played a whole lot of Blue Max.

-3rd Generation: NES - The system I fell in love with gaming on. So many wasted hours in front of a T.V. screen playing Super Mario Bros. 1-3, Zelda 1 & 2, TMNT 1 & 2, Pin-Bot, Bionic Commando, Star Soldier, Contra, Castlevania II, and Mega Man 2 & 5. (And a lot more, but those were my early favorites.) I was addicted when I played this system. We had an Atari 2600 before it, but it would never hold my attention for long.

-4th Generation: SNES - This system took everything great about the NES, and made it all better: Better graphics, better sound, bigger games, better controller, and more reliable hardware (no more freaking screen-blinking and blowing into cartridges). Nintendo, Capcom, and Konami were at their creative peaks, IMO, at this time. And Squaresoft was really starting to hit their stride which would continue on the PS1.

-5th Generation: PS1 - Great era for gaming. So much was happening. So many new genres and experimenting going on with gaming, and the PS1 was at the center of it all. Plus it had great exclusives and RPGs. The King's Field games, Resident Evil games, and Castlevania SotN alone are worth owning the system, IMO.

-6th Generation: XBox (Original) - Had the best action-RPGs that generation, which is my favorite genre, plus it had the stellar Halo games and other great exclusives like MechAssault, Crimson Skies, and Panzer Dragoon: Orta. And it had Morrowind, which was the reason I bought mine.

-Currently: XBox 360 - It's the only modern system I had until a couple years ago when my wife got me a Wii for Christmas. So naturally, I lean towards it. I've never had a PS3, and the Wii does have some fantastic games, but not nearly the variety of the XBox 360. Plus the XBox Live Arcade is a wonderful thing. Great classics, and a lot of great new games as well.

-Handhelds - GBA-SP - The best handheld of all-time, as far as I'm concerned. Great design, beautiful backlit screen, and a fantastic library of games of both original games and re-releases of some of the best classics of all time. Plus it's backwards compatible with all original Game Boy and Game Boy Color games which is a huge plus in my book. Especially since the GBA-SP really makes the games look a whole lot better with the backlit screen. And I love the clamshell design that protects that beautiful screen. The only drawback, IMO, is the low-quality sound. I want it to be louder.

Modern Video Games / A Look Back at Your Favorite Wii Games
« on: February 03, 2013, 03:25:38 pm »
The Wii is pretty much done and over at this point. I know that there are still a few spatterings of releases here or there, but nothing major anymore.

So now that the innovative console is done and over, looking back at it what were some of your favorite titles for the console? Physical disc or Wii Ware included.

My top favorites for the system:

-Bit Trip Series (Wii Ware) - An audio and visual feast that will test your skills.

-Cave Story (Wii Ware) - One of the most underrated games of all-time. Metroidvania gameplay with a very charming setting and cast of characters and some puzzle and RPG elements thrown in.

-Donkey Kong Country Returns - I love the Donkey Kong Country series. The level-design and gameplay are just so well thought out in these games and they play almost rhythmically.

-Metroid Prime 3: Corruption - One of the best uses of the Wii's waggler...ahem, "WiiMote".

-Metroid: Other M - More story-driven than most Metroid games, but still a great game in a great series.

-New Super Mario Bros. Wii - Great traditional 2D Super Mario platforming, polished to that special Nintendo shine.

-Rayman: Origins - Beautiful both visually and musically and great 2D platforming.

-Super Mario All-Stars - If you don't already have these games individually, or the original release of this collection on the SNES; then I HIGHLY recommend getting this one. Some of the best platforming games, nay, some of the best games EVER on this collection.

-Super Paper Mario - Nice twist on 2D gameplay and it was a fun Mario game.

-Wii Sports & Sports Resort - Just plain fun to play with people.

I haven't had the chance to play Epic Mickey or Legend of Zelda: Twilight Sword yet, but would love to. To tell the truth, I haven't played Donkey Kong Country Returns other than in the store for a couple minutes. But I already know I love the Donkey Kong Country series so it just seems like a no-brainer for me (and it's only a matter of time before it's in my collection, I just haven't come across that deal on it yet).

I really like the Virtual Console service, too. It let me try out some games that were otherwise hard to find or too expense to be a practical purchase for me like Lords of Thunder on Sega CD, Chrono Trigger on SNES, and Breath of Fire 2 on SNES.

What were some of your favorites?

Classic Video Games / Let's Name the Top 100 PS1 Games Together
« on: February 03, 2013, 04:36:53 am »
Seems the Game Boy/GBC and GBA lists are really dying down. Thought we could make it to 100 on those, but it seems we might not. So I thought it was time for another. I'm nearly positive we should be able to make it to 100 on PS1.

This works the same as the other "Let's Name" lists.

Rules:
-Please add only 1 game per post.
-Please allow others to post before posting again (to prevent this from becoming 1 person's list)
-Please do not repeat games that have already appeared on the list.

Site Feedback / Sent Messages Not Showing In My Inbox

In the VG Collect "My Messages" part of the forum, it shows messages sent to me, but when I click the "Sent Messages" option it says I have nothing. Yet I've sent messages in the past and just sent 2 today.

Site Feedback / Changes Within Individual Sections
« on: January 20, 2013, 05:41:57 pm »
I don't know how hard this is, or if it's possible. But I think it would a lot more useful if certain sections had different details. Not everything on this site is a video game.

For example: In the "Swag - Promo Videos/ Movies" section, we could have the proper genres (Action, Science Fiction, Comedy, Horror, etc.) and the proper ratings (G, PG, PG-13, R, etc.). Or in the "Swag - Print Media (Books, Comics)" we could have an Author section.

This works pretty much the same as the similar NES thread:

-Since this was questioned on the last thread: Multiple entries from the same series are acceptable. For example, if someone mentioned Donkey Kong Country, you can still name Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest.

I'll get her started:

1. Super Metroid

Site Feedback / Is There a Movie Catagory?
« on: January 17, 2013, 07:47:05 pm »
I see the "Swag - Promo Videos/Movies" section. But I was wondering if regular movies/T.V. Shows can be added here too? Stuff like the Super Mario Bros. Show, Resident Evil movie, or other such gaming related media?

Thanks.  :)

I'm excited to see what the line-up is gonna be! Love me some classic Capcom. Bionic Commando for NES is must!

I doubt licensed titles are gonna be on there, but it would be nice to see Duck Tales 2 released, since it brings with it a hefty price tag for a physical copy.

Off Topic / What Was The Last Movie/Anime You Watched?
« on: January 06, 2013, 08:03:58 pm »

I went and saw The Hobbit today. Can't say I hated it, it was a good movie in it's own right. Any Tolkien or fantasy fans should go see it. Great production values and budget, and a lot of Middle-Earth lore packed into it.

But at the same time, I can't say that I loved it either. It was just too silly at times. It seemed as if the movie never took itself seriously, which really bothered me. I mean, this wasn't some low-budget production where that sort of thing belongs, nor was it supposed to be a comedy. A little humor here or there is a good thing, but it was just too much here.

I hope the sequel is little more serious, since it looks like it's gonna deal with Smaug.

My first pick-ups of the year:

I've heard the Ultimate History of Video Games Book is quite in-depth and a great informative read on the history of the gaming industry.

And as I suggested that I'd like to see a JRPG with Western mythology and a Western art-style (in another thread); Lord of the Rings: The Third Age fits that bill perfectly.
