Classic Video Games / My Look at the SEGA Genesis
« on: August 14, 2014, 06:09:35 pm »
I've seen a few projects for Youtube and playing every SEGA Master System game. So, here is my newest project. AGES of Sega for the Genesis. This video highlights the early part of the system itself. Also, check out our other videos. I've been looking at SG-1000 games for a while.

Let me know what you think. All games are recorded via RGB Scart from the actual hardware. Unfortunately, the recording software is setup for modern HD consoles and only accepts certain aspect ratios. So, it is stretched. But it is clear and easy to work with. Which with a hobby, ease is the main thing.

Classic Video Games / Counterfeit Games Being Sold
« on: March 06, 2014, 09:38:35 pm »
There has been a lot of talk of the 5-screw Little Samson appearing on eBay. It's currently at $260. It is a fake. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Little-Samson-NINTENDO-PAT-PEND-MADE-IN-JAPAN-NINTENDO-NES-/141206371656?pt=Video_Games_Games&hash=item20e08e3d48

5-screws were not made after 87 or so. Do counterfeit games concern you when buying games? Would you buy high-end games?

Classic Video Games / Poll: How do you pronounce NES
« on: January 30, 2014, 06:35:14 pm »
Do you say it as if it is a word? Much like one pronounces NASA. Do you say the letters? Much like one pronounces NRA. Or do you call it something different? Do you go super old school and just straight up call it the Nintendo?

Personally, I have always called it the "regular Nintendo". I started this as a kid. I got mine in 1993 (top-loader, boy!). So, there was the "super" Nintendo. I didn't have that. I had the "regular" Nintendo.

However, lately, I've been transitioning to saying it in the NASA acronym style. I often say "NEZZ". I blame the brits on youtube. (I've also caught myself saying "Atari Jag-you-are". It's embarrassing. )

EDIT: Also list where you lived at the time of the NES. I'm curious if this is based on Geography. Like soda vs pop. Arkansas for me.

General / Systems that Kind of Belong with Another Brand Name
« on: December 12, 2013, 07:30:42 pm »
I've often wondered two things:

1) Should the Phillips CDI be included in a Nintendo collection?

2) Should the Neo Geo Pocket Color be included in a Sega collection?

Also, are there any other systems that are strongly associated with another company?

I wonder this because I always considered the NGPC the successor to the Game Gear. It was to the Dreamcast what the Game Gear was to the Genesis. You could connect your NGPC to your Dreamcast. It shared games. It was heavily featured in the Official Dreamcast Magazine.

Also, when I collected Nintendo, I was always curious about the CDi games. I knew they were bad. But a Zelda collection never seemed truly complete without the CDi Zelda games. This leads me to wonder if the CDi should be part of a proper complete Nintendo console collection due to the history.

Of course, each collector has their own definition. Just like every full set collector has a different definition of a "full set". Just curious what others thought of these examples.

Off Topic / Youtube Videos Everyone Should See
« on: November 07, 2013, 11:21:57 pm »
Our Star Wars Discussion made me think of Star Trek, which made me think of this video. There is no point except it is something I feel everyone should see. Even though it is stupid. That's what this thread is about. Youtube videos that serve no point except to be shared. I'll start off...

Classic Video Games / The Most Legendary Collector
« on: September 30, 2013, 10:39:03 pm »
Is there a collector whose name you are kind of in awe of? Someone you are just completely envious of their knowledge? Someone that if you met, you would be a little starstruck? Now, I mean strictly on collector status. If there is a youtube guy that you think fits the bill in terms of collector, list them. If it's because you like their funny videos, list someone else. I'm talking collectors.

For me, it is Mike Etler. I used to walk around with his rarity guide and even tried to memorize it when I was a kid. It was his work and tsr's web page that defined a few years of my life. I used to collect Nintendo pretty seriously in the 90s and this site was something I read over and over. I consider Mike Etler one of the pioneers of game collecting and NES knowledge.

So, do you guys have anyone who you think beats Mike Etler? Anyone used to hangout on tsr's NES archive?

Classic Video Games / VGConnect August 2013: Psychonauts

The thread for everything Psychonauts.

I am planning on starting tomorrow. Unfortunately this game is tough to find in the Dallas area. It was all over Tulsa.  :( I may pick it up on XBLA though. What's everyone else playing on?

Classic Video Games / Dragon Quest Celebration
« on: July 21, 2013, 07:11:56 pm »

Happy Console Gamer recently did a video for Dragon Quest. I've always know this series as being insanely popular in Japan, but forgotten in the States. At least until recently. although it still is no where near Final Fantasy levels. The video got me thinking. Why do you think this series never did well. Nintendo promoted it. They even gave the game away for free. But it seems like, even at the time, Final Fantasy was still number 1.

The only thing I could think of is that the US had a bigger split between computer and console players. Most of the potential Dragon Warrior fans were on the Amiga or DOS? But this doesn't explain why Final Fantasy did better. Although, they did not release FF 2 or 3 here, so maybe it really did not do as well as I remember...

I have several fond memories of the game. It was the first RPG I ever played. And although I'm not a big RPG fan. 8-bit RPGs have a special place in my heart. And this game is second only to Phantasy Star. I have not played any Dragon Warrior/Quest after the first one though.

Anyways, any thoughts about the series? Any diehard fans who make giant slimes out of bean bags?

Classic Video Games / Happy 30th Birthday SG1000 and Famicom!
« on: July 15, 2013, 08:04:21 pm »
SEGA and Nintendo's first home consoles (minus pong stuff) was exactly 30 years ago today. It's one of the great days in video game history. Just as the game market was dying here, it was just starting in Japan. July 15, 1983 was a crucial day in keeping gaming in the mainstream.

I always found it neat that the SG1000 and Famicom were released the same day. The MSX was released that year as well.

Modern Video Games / What Next Gen Games Are You Getting
« on: July 13, 2013, 10:19:56 am »
We've talked about the systems to death. But what about the games? If you are planning on going next gen what games excite you? And list for any system, whether you plan on picking one up or not.

For me:
Watch Dogs - It's coming to current gen as well. But seeing this last year at E3 was the very first time I started to get excited for the next gen.
Forza 5 - I love the Forza series. 'nuff said.
Killer Instinct - It is a scaled back version. And the original wasn't as good as the hype. But, the bottom line is, I am really excited to hear c-c-c-c-combo breaker again.
Destiny - This just excites me. I can't explain why. By I want to play it. I'm not a big FPS guy But I loved Marathon back in the day and Halo. I'm sure I'll like this.
Titanfall - I'm not as excited as others, but this does look fun.
Metal Gear Solid - I love Kojima.
Sunset Overdrive - Looks fun
Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts 3 - I'm not a huge RPG fan. But I still get excited for new Square games for some reason.

Modern Video Games / Don Mattrick Out
« on: July 01, 2013, 10:00:46 pm »
Don Mattrick has left Microsoft. He's now with Zynga.

Personally, I think a step up would be to replace him with that drinking bird. You know the one from the simpsons that just keeps pecking the "y" key over and over until is causes a nuclear meltdown...

Classic Video Games / VGConnect July 2013: StarTropics
« on: June 29, 2013, 12:02:20 am »
This is the official thread of the July VGConnect. Post anything related to Startropics here:

Until July 1st gets here, what are your memories of this game? This was actually a childhood favorite of mine. It was one of the easiest games to find toward the end of the NES's life. I remember going into a KB Toys all the time and they would just have copy after copy of Star Tropics and Zoda's Revenge. The abundance of copies is what I remember most.  ;D I think I eventually bought them both new in the playstation/saturn/n64 era actually. This was like mid to late 90s. This was probably the first RPG that made sense. Up until this point I don't even think I knew that Zelda had dungeons. I just did not "get" RPG games. I remember StarTropics being a good intro to RPGs.

I always found it a bummer Zoda's Revenge was not a SNES game. I wonder how the series would have done if that was the case.

Classic Video Games / Future VGConnect Games/Interest
« on: June 23, 2013, 05:53:50 pm »
I actually had a lot of fun for the June game. I think Earthworm Jim was a little short which is both good and bad. Anyways, I learned a lot about the history and beat a game that would have sadly stayed in my backlog for way longer than it should have. If other people are up for it, we could make a list of games and the top 6 could last us through the year. Doing one game a month until 2014. This would also give people time to find games. If anyone is interested we can start the game voting process. I would nominate the following:

Psychonauts
Phantasy Star
Doom
Shadowrun
Skies of Arcadia
Trouble Shooter

If interested vote for any game you see or nominate your own!

Vote Count As of Justin's Psychonauts vote on page 2

General / Cool Shenmue stuff
« on: June 17, 2013, 02:20:30 am »
Shenmue is my favorite game. Consequently, I keep up with the news, community, and happenings pretty closely. Obviously no Shenmue 3. But there has been cool stuff regarding the locations and history. Anyways, an indie documentary called in Ryo's footsteps was made and there is a campaign on indiegogo to make a better version. It's a cool documentary. I love travel shows such as no reservations, and this kind of reminds me of it. Clearly it has a very homemade feel. But it has the vibe. It also has the feeling of discovery Shenmue had. I really enjoyed watching it.

I wanted to make a post, because I think it is always amazing when people take a lot of their time and funds to explore and share with the video game community. Their indiegogo page is here: http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/in-ryo-s-footsteps-2--2
