General / New Mac Pro.... Anyone do gaming on Mac here?
« on: June 14, 2013, 02:24:16 am »
So, I was window shopping macs and they updated the mac pro page in the middle of my viewing. The new one looks weird. It's like a black tube. http://www.apple.com/mac-pro/

I'm reading about in now...

EDIT: I have to admit this thing is sexy looking. 10 inches high by 6.5 inches wide.

Anyone here mac users or is it all windows? Anyone else game on their mac? I know there was a topic on creating a mac game category...

Modern Video Games / Disney is getting serious about games...
« on: June 13, 2013, 12:30:57 am »
Kingdom Hearts, Fantasia (harmonix), castle of illusion, duck tales, acquisition of star wars and marvel games...

I've heard Disney is trying to get back to where Disney games were the thing. So, back to the 8 and 16 bit days. Do you guys think they will succeed. Personally I think it is off to a great start. The only bad move I've really seen is the closure of LucasArts and replacing them with EA. The rest, as much as it surprises me to write this, seems really well done and the developers are well picked. Duck tales stays with capcom, castle of illusion stays with Disney (EDIT: meant SEGA), Fantasia with Harmonix... sweetness!

Leguizamo provides a message about the movie. Calling them pioneers, talks about strippers, electrocuting people, and cutting Bob Hoskins. Plus, mentions of the fact that they were drunk most of the time. Double plus, he does a really bad cockney english accent that borders on derogatory.

So, what did you guys think of the movie?

General / Anyone interested in a together retro?
« on: May 28, 2013, 09:34:50 pm »
Just curious if anyone is interested in doing a vgcollect together retro or let's play type of thing. Racketboy does this as does nintendoworldreport. But didn't know if people here would be interested.

The idea is that each month the participating members play the same game. You can post your thoughts, let's play videos, anything. The goal is to play games we otherwise would not play. We all have holes in our gaming catalog. For example, I have never played Wing Commander, Ultima, etc. The activity also brings back the memories of chatting with your friends about a particular game everyone is playing.

There are other sites doing it, so it may be overkill to do here. But it could help build the community as well. Anyways, if you think it is a good idea respond. Also feel free to post possible games. I would suggest leaving it open to stuff that is easily emulated or on GOG.com so as many people can join in as possible.

Classic Video Games / Game Boy Advance Hate
« on: May 22, 2013, 11:28:20 am »
Does anyone remember the Game Boy Advance hate at launch. I remember it existing and emulators coming up named boycott advance due to people vowing never to buy one. Does anyone remember exactly why? I've been doing some searching but not turning up a lot of information.

I know we have a lot of OKC people. Anyways, anyone planning on going to SGC in Dallas? I would have just moved there, so I am definitely planning on it. I just found out about it from Pat the NES Punk's youtube. If anyone is making it out there, hit me up.

General / Capcom vs. Konami: Which do you enjoy more?
« on: May 11, 2013, 10:56:17 am »
These were always two of the biggest and best third party developers (at least during the 8 and 16 bit days). If you had to pick only one, which would it be? Mega Man vs. Contra, Resident Evil vs. Silent Hill, Street Fighter vs Castlevania, the list goes on.

I will vote Konami. I always preferred Konami the feel and look of Konami games. I will take the feel and design of X-Men or Turtles in Time over Final Fight any day. Castlevania is probably my favorite 8-bit game. And honestly, although I love capcom, their two biggest titles: Mega Man and Street Fighter never really spoke to me.

Classic Video Games / Greatest games almost no one has played
« on: May 09, 2013, 10:33:58 pm »
Know a game that almost no one has played? It has to be great. It also has to be one that when mentioned, almost never gets recognized.

My game: Policenauts.

It is the spiritual successor to Snatcher. It is way more original than snatcher (I do love me some Blade Runner). It gets referenced repeatedly in Metal Gear Solid. It has a killer soundtrack. Fantastic art. And most importantly, for my money, it is Hideo Kojima's best work. Sadly, most gamers seem to not know about it.

What are some games that you know are gems that no one knows about.

General / How old is your computer
« on: May 06, 2013, 11:50:09 pm »
I kinda wonder how old people's computers are on a retro game site. I could see two forces taking hold:

1) The gamer: Needs a new powerful machine.

2) The retro: Enjoys getting the most out of old tech.

Anyways, I got curious about what people are running.

I'm running a macbook 2007 model. It's a 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 gigs of RAM and a now small 120 GB Hard Drive (I have a 1 TB as an external though). It's still trucking along and I actually do not see replacing it anytime soon. I actually would like to use it as a primary machine until 2017.

Anyways, I delight in making old machines last way longer than they should. I definitely fall into the retro category. Even though a 6 year old computer is not old yet.

Recently did a trade with slothingXPIG. I received the items in a very timely manner and in the condition described. Communication was excellent. I would not hesitate to trade or purchase games from this user at all. A very smooth and delightful experience.

Modern Video Games / Sega Spectrum?
« on: April 23, 2013, 09:25:34 pm »
So, a new image has started making the rounds. Here is the link to the story at Sega-Addicts (The place I get all of my news, current, and local events from  8) )

Quote
A peculiar image has been circulating the web recently that shows the Sega logo as well as an unknown logo and the single word “Spectrum”. The Japanese text translates to ”A new world of entertainment.” and carries the date of June 6th 2013.

Is it a new arcade board, some sort of new online service or maybe even some kind of new home console…? And where on Earth did this image come from (I still haven’t been able to find the original source I’m afraid)?

The original source is unknown, so it could be nothing. Also, SEGA has recently been known to have cryptic teasers that lead to almost nothing. They had sand dripping on a field announcing a date (it turned out to be the new Football Manager game  >:( )

With the date being E3 (I read the date as June 12th not 6th), I bet it is going to be next gen system news. The logo almost looks like the windows logo (the bottom left pane moved to the top)... maybe something with XBox?

Of course, I'm hoping for a Dreamcast 2.... with Shenmue 3 as a launch title... and VMUs that play Genesis games...

What do you guys want it to be? What do you think it is?

Marketplace / Getting a feeler for trades
« on: April 18, 2013, 10:34:28 pm »
I am going to be moving and am debating on trading off the leftover Nintendo stuff from my old collection that I did not get rid of in the first cleansing. I don't have a good digital camera, so will post pictures probably Sunday. I would want pictures up before I trade as I don't trust my experience at descriptions yet. I am looking for SEGA and XBOX stuff primarily if interested in anything.

Import DS Lite System (white)
DS - Pokemon Diamond
DS - Gundam 00
DS - Higurashi: When They Cry 1
DS - Higurashi: When They Cry 2
GBA - Mother 1 and 2 (Players Choice)

All games are complete with inserts. The mother compilation box got beat up as it was in a backpack during a vacation in Kyoto before making it back to Tokyo. The two flaps have trouble staying closed and the top is bent a bit. Indentations throughout. I would rate a 6/10.

System is by itself.

In case you were wondering, some things I am looking for are:

Game Gear

Earthworm Jim
Mega Man
Double Dragon
Tails Adventure

Genesis

Contra Hard Corps
Castlevania Bloodlines

Saturn

Panzer Dragoon Zwei
Azel: Panzer Dragoon
Snatcher

Dreamcast
___________________________
Phantasy Star Online
Sonic Adventure 2
Chu Chu Rocket

XBOX
___________________________
Futurama
Stubbs the Zombie
Knights of the Old Republic 2

Also, various SEGA or XBOX stuff I don't have. You and I both know the good games. I'm looking for fair trades for both people. Genesis and Game Gear, I prefer loose carts. XBOX Case is needed, instructions could come or not. Dreamcast, SEGA CD, and Japanese Saturn are complete. Saturn is Japanese only.

Again, just getting a feeler. These are the last of my Nintendo stuff, so I might keep 'em. But honestly, they are just sitting in the closet not being used. And I should probably send them off before I move. Feel free to PM or post questions.

General / Anyone still get gaming magazines?
« on: April 16, 2013, 11:41:29 pm »
I was coming home late today and stopped by Barnes and Noble. Went to the game section and it hit me just how small that section is now. I knew a lot went under, but it is weird to actually see how few there are. I thumbed through retro gamer (good zine) and decided to purchase the official XBox magazine. I really enjoyed it. I was shocked at how much I liked it. Subscriptions are INSANELY cheap as well. 12 issues for 25 bucks. I think I would really enjoy it for 2 dollars per issue.

Does anyone else subscribe or regularly purchase video game magazines?
