Classic Video Games / Castle of Illusion HD remake
« on: April 15, 2013, 08:38:56 pm »
Castle of Illusion is being remade and coming to XBLA and PSN this summer. For those not aware, Castle of Illusion is a Mickey Mouse game that appeared on SEGA consoles. Think Duck Tales but more fun.

What I find interesting is that Disney is getting liberal with its licenses. This will be interesting given the closure of Lucas Arts and such.

Off Topic / New Daft Punk anyone?
« on: April 14, 2013, 04:20:13 pm »
OK, so this is one of my favorite bands. I came on during the homework (EDIT: meant Discovery) era. The anime music videos (interstella 5555) are what introduced me.

The new album "random access memory" comes out May 21st. Anyone else excited? Any Daft Punk fans?

Modern Video Games / Forza and Racing Games
« on: April 09, 2013, 12:23:10 am »
I've only had an Xbox and Xbox 360 for about a year so don't have too much experience. But I am addicted to the Forza franchise. I recently picked up Forza Horizon and love both of them.

Do you have any favorite modern racing games or franchises? I've heard the Need for Speed games are fun. I also heard things about Blur a while back.

Does anyone know if Moto GP or SBK is any good? I'm a big motorcycle fan. However, I only remember Hang On and Road Rash being good.

Classic Video Games / The game speculation thread
« on: March 31, 2013, 03:42:12 pm »
I thought it would be nice to have a thread stating what games might or will fetch a big price in the future. I put this in the classic section to avoid the buy the limited edition, don't open it, and sell it on ebay in a month.  I am specifically looking for games that are not outrageous now, but probably will be. For example, Snatcher may increase in value, but it is already considered a holy grail of sorts, so I don't count that for the thread.

Futurama (Xbox) - I have slowly been watching this game get more and more expensive. I started watching it last year, it would sell for $20, which I deemed too expensive for an xbox game. However, now it sells for between 35 and 40 very regularly. (not counting stock photo auctions, I ignore those)

If you are collecting for the original xbox... pick up Futurama.

Urban Strike (Game Gear) - This one may or may not go up. The game gear does not have a high ceiling on prices. But the game seems to be extremely rare. Game Gear fans seem to know this and scour ebay for the key price. One just popped up for $20, which is over market value. But it you put it up for a BIN at $10 a collector will buy it within a few views. Considering how few appear on ebay, I could see this getting really high (game gear high is 25-40). If I ran a store, I would slowly collect these at around 10 a pop.

Video Game Auction Watch / Unique Sonic 3 Cart
« on: March 23, 2013, 12:57:47 am »
I was browsing ebay and found a sonic 3 with a totally sweet homemade label. I can't tell if it is hand drawn on masking tape or what. If it is, that person has skills. The price is kind of off, but it is neat. I'm curious if it would sell. If it was about a third of the price I would be tempted.

General / Best Video Game Commercials
« on: March 22, 2013, 07:51:48 pm »
Let's face it half of collecting games is nostalgia. What's more nostalgic than watching the old commercials? Well, a lot of things... but let's see you favorite video game commercials anyways.

Here is mine. It was commercials like this that made me want a Genesis instead of Nintendo. I was 8 at the time and this commercial is perfect for an 8 year old boy.

General / What's your focus area?
« on: March 17, 2013, 01:05:14 pm »
Do you guys have a particular focus area? Do you have one system that you collect for more than any other? Are you a NES collector? Game Boy collector? Genesis, PS2? What made you pick that system?

I am a Game Gear collector mostly. I originally started out wanting to focus on the Dreamcast, but found Game Gear collecting really fun. The reason for picking the Game Gear is mainly nostalgia. I have horrible eyesight (near blind in my right eye) and could not see a Game Boy screen as a kid. So, I developed a lot of love for the Game Gear as a kid, if nothing else, because it was the only thing I could see. Plus, nothing beats playing Wonder Boy on the go!

Classic Video Games / What do you consider Atari?
« on: March 06, 2013, 12:18:46 am »
This is a question I was thinking of recently. Atari filed bankruptcy months ago. Well, more precisely, the company that now owned a portion of the Atari name filed bankruptcy. The name has been bought and sold several times. I was wondering, when do you guys think that Atari was no longer Atari.

Warner had Atari during the 2600 days. They developed up to the 7800, but sold the company in 1984 to Jack Tramiel. He then released the already developed 7800 and then developed the Lynx and Jaguar. Then the name was sold to other companies.

Basically, do you consider the Lynx and the Jaguar as being real Atari systems. Or do you think Atari stopped with the 7800 or possibly before.

Before, I always considered the Lynx and Jaguar to be Atari, even though they did seem out of place. But as I learn more about Atari. The more I don't consider them part of Atari proper. And the more comfortable I am with those systems place in history.

Hardware and Tech / Portable game boot problem fix
« on: March 05, 2013, 11:52:45 pm »
So, I have found that about half of the game gear games I purchase have trouble booting. I can always tell before I power on the system because the games that won't boot fit in way too loose. The ones that always work still fit snuggly.

A few months ago I saw a collector show his method of fixing game boy games that don't want to boot. He then proceeded to bend the game a bit. It sounds weird, but the odd thing is it kind off works. Basically, his explanation is that the contacts and board on the games compress over time and use and then no longer get good contact with the pins.

I recently decided to put a tiny fold of paper between the circuit and the game case (touching the side of the circuit that is blank). This pushes the circuit a tiny bit closer to the pins.

Now every game boots first try.

Modern Video Games / ArcadeCraft
« on: March 04, 2013, 09:17:08 pm »
Anyone play the game arcadecraft? I heard about it on JurassicJunkie's Friday Night Rant on Youtube... decided to check it out... and it is strangely addicting to me. I've at least gotten my 2.99 value.

It is basically lemonade stand but with an arcade.

General / Franchises that should be games
« on: February 21, 2013, 09:13:17 pm »
I recently have been on a movie franchise kick for games. Most are really bad. But this did get me wondering, what would be a great franchise to build a game on?

For me it is Battle Royale. If you have not seen it, it is available on netflix streaming. Watch it. It was the eerily similar "inspiration" to the Hunger Games. But with over the top Japanese styling. The basic no spoiler plot is that a class gets sent to an island where only one person can survive. If no one fights, every one dies. Plus, there is always an ultra violent ringer brought in.

It would be neat to have an entire island with stock piles, shelters, and tens of other contestants waiting to take you out. Everyone gets one "special" item. Some really useful, some not so much. It is all luck. The multiplayer would be really neat. Working together and forming alliances is a great way to get to the end. But the alliances HAVE to break before the timer runs out.

What franchises do you think would make good games?

Video Game Auction Watch / Japanese Saturn Advice
« on: February 13, 2013, 09:25:28 pm »
So, I am thinking about picking up a Japanese saturn to start that collection. Does anyone know a good place to buy one? Checking on ebay, this seems like the route I might go.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/WOW-Sega-Saturn-Game-console-System-RARE-Japan-White-/230928797127?pt=Video_Games&hash=item35c46dcdc7

My local retail store has a saturn with an st key for $70. This seems high to me. Plus, I like the white saturn look.

Any suggestions from an experienced japanese Saturn owner?

Classic Video Games / Let's Name the Top 100 Game Themes
« on: February 07, 2013, 10:47:48 pm »
I thought it would be nice to take a break from game titles and move to the most memorable video game music. After all, there is a whole thread devoted to audio setups. I know you have your favorites.

1. Simon's Theme - Super Castlevania IV

Site Feedback / Separate category for DC homebrews
« on: February 02, 2013, 05:15:43 pm »
When I first signed up for the site, I was immediately put off because I started putting in my dreamcast collection and immediately noticed there were way too many Dreamcast games listed. I also don't like wading through the homebrews when browsing.

The dreamcast seems to be the biggest system issue for this.

Would it make sense to have a separate homebrew category? I mean, there are over 300 DC games listed for a console that has approximately 240 games.

Modern Video Games / Next Gen Announcement coming?
« on: February 01, 2013, 07:53:30 pm »
Sony seems to be teasing a big event for February 20th. It seems like an odd time to announce a console. But the trailer does look like it more than anything (in the fact that it mentions nothing but playstation) (source: Real Giant Bomb). I recently heard rumors that Microsoft is possibly going to announce before E3 as well. What do you think?
