Classic Video Games / Re: PSX turns 25 in NA
« on: September 11, 2020, 09:04:22 am »
The first Playstation was revolutionary. IMO, it nearly perfected the controller with the Dual Shock. The big part of why it was revolutionary though? The games. Oh my gawd the games! I don't think there was a generation before or since that has supplied so many incredible new IPs. Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Dino Crisis, Destruction Derby, Oddworld, Twisted Metal, MGS, .... I could go on and on. Such an incredible generation. In fact, it was such an incredible gen that I honestly have trouble narrowing down best of games for it because there are so many to choose from.

As an example, I'm making a Hall/Wall of fame creating a shadowbox display for a favorite game from each major gen that I've been gaming. PS1 is next up on the list and I eventually picked the Tomb Raider series, but it was neck and neck with Resident Evil for a long time for me.

I remember seeing Sony show off the Playstation before it released and as a Sega fan, my jaw dropped. I saw what I believed was the cool system (Playstation) and then what I saw coming up in my fan camp... the Saturn. The $100 difference was also a huge difference to a 14 year old that wasn't yet employed anywhere. That said, I knew I wanted a Playstation and I started to do extra chores around the house. Then I moved out to the street and started doing extra chores for the neighbors next door. Then I moved on to the entire neighborhood offering lawn mowing, dog walking, house sitting, etc jobs for the entire summer of '95. I worked my ass off that summer to afford a Playstation and when all was said and done... I raked in about $150... half of what I needed.

I lived with my grandparents at the time and they saw how much I worked for it and they stated that if I didn't mind knowing what I got that Christmas. and if I handed over the $150 I had earned, that they would get me a Playstation that year as my gift. Of course, I immediately handed over the money and gave them a massive thank you and a hug just on their word.

That Christmas, I got to open up my first Playstation. They got me Ridge Racer with it. My uncle got me a memory card. My dad got me Destruction Derby. It was the best Christmas memory I had until I had kids of my own.

I've stuck with Playstation ever since. I can't wait to continue on with the PS5.

I'm also pretty disappointed in the Prince of Persia remake graphics when next gen is right around the corner. They could have done so much more with it. I'm hoping Ubisoft hears this criticism and pushes the release back to give the game a more appropriate graphical update. Otherwise, I'll probably just stick with my PS2 copy of the game.

Series X has been given a price of $499 and a release date of Nov. 10.  If they are making this year, there's no way Sony would miss it.

I was not expecting a leaker to force Microsoft's hands on giving up the goods. About time and bravo to that guy. Now Sony needs to end their silence. I guess as we now have information, at least on Xbox, we wait to see what Sony's move is. I concur that Sony can't afford to delay the PS5 now. Time for them to get up off their rear.

Classic Video Games / Re: What is your principal goal collecting games?
« on: September 05, 2020, 04:26:16 pm »
For the most part, I'd say, I'm collecting games that I have fond memories of. For instance, retro-wise, I still collect for my Sega Game Gear. On my list are essentially games that I've played or are linked to TV shows or movies I loved as a kid.... Micro Machines, Donald Duck Lucky Dime Caper, and Indiana Jones. The rest will be played via an Everdrive cartridge.

I don't anticipate ever having a full collection of games for any single system. I also don't anticipate having more than around 50-ish games per single system.... amend that to 50-ish physical games for modern systems.

I've even found that often I prefer doing projects (crafting) based on retro games or games I loved just as much as playing the actual game. Case in point, I've been creating shadowboxes for my favorite games of all time; making a wall of fame so to speak. I've done one for the original Ninja Turtles game for NES and I'm finishing up one for Jurassic Park on Genesis. Next after that will be Uncharted. It's a time killer, but I have great fun designing and building them.

I often wonder if SONY will end the PlayStation 4's support therefore forcing people to buy a PlayStation 5 and not keep the online services up for those who still own a PlayStation 4.

I got a feeling Microsoft won't do the same as SONY, but maybe they will or maybe either won't

but so far so good both companies are still supporting the 7th generation online patch servers so I hope they don't leave both 7th and 8th generations in the dust because I love some of my 7th generation consoles.

I believe Sony will be supporting PS4 through 2023 via online servers, production, and allowing third party games on the system. Sony has supported each Playstation for a minimum of 10 years. Going from system launch to last game released on each system....

PS1 - 1994/5 - 2005
PS2 - 2000 - 2014
PS3 - 2006 - 2020
PS4 - 2013 - 202?
PS5 - 2020/1? - 20??

Continued support for PS4 won't be an issue.

Sounds like a rumor is floating about that we'll be seeing some kind of PS5 event on the 25th anniversary of the PS1 on September 9th. Rumors are all over the place with some including that the price and launch day will be announced. Some are saying that new AAA games will be announced. Some are even going so far to say that with the recent AMD and NVidia card showings that PS5 might get a power boost of some kind (doubtful).

I'm not going to hold my breath, but here's hoping. I still believe we could very well see a delay to next year.

Necro Thread. Nice.

I'm a console gamer. I have been primarily since I got my NES back in 1991. Moved to Sega for Genesis and Game Gear. Then moved to Playstation on Christmas '95 and stuck with them ever since. I would occasionally have a secondary system like Dreamcast, Gamecube, Wii and now Switch but Playstation has remained my main system for 25 years.

I did do some PC gaming back from 1999 to around 2005 or so. Played some great games like Unreal Tournament, UT2004, Warcraft 3 and World of Warcraft. I even later jumped into Star Trek Online for a bit which was and still is the best Star Trek game created IMO. Luckily, it was ported to PS4 so I play it there now.

Handheld gaming was great back in the Game Gear and PSP days, but the Vita turned me off of it so quick that I don't think I'll ever buy myself another handheld ever again. I enjoyed Uncharted on it, but when not even Sony supported it after only two years, it became a waste of money. I still go back to my Game Gear though and am even still collecting a few gems for it. Looking to get an Everdrive for it next but it'll wait until next year or so.

I'm still catching up on Ghost of Tsushima. I've been doing every side quest available and have one of the better armor sets and my sword nearly all the way leveled with almost every perk unlocked and I'm maybe half done with the story. I do enjoy watching the enemy recoil in fear as I cut their friends down though.

Still on a game buying freeze for my use until PS5 releases, but I'm thinking of getting Luigi's Mansion 3 for the Switch for the kids to enjoy during the Halloween season.

As for PS5 launch games, Outriders is at the top of the list. Still waiting on what the heck is going to release with the system as well as what the heck the price is going to be. We'll see.

Honestly, unless the XSeX is far more successful than the X1, I could see it being Microsoft's last console release. I think they realize it as well and that's why they are focusing more on Games as a Service and having almost everything on PC as well. They are making the move over a couple generations instead of having to react.

I listed some reasons why in my rebuttal. It's fine if you don't like it, but the game is a really good one. I thought it was fantastic that Sega had different teams making essentially different games for the Jurassic Park franchise across their systems where as the Nintendo versions of the game were essentially the same and not well put together at that.

Didn't the Super Nintendo version shit all over it anyway? It was a mediocre 3rd party movie tie in at best, even if it was better. The Toejam and earl franchise represents the Genesis better. As a franchise and what the Genesis was about. I couldn't put an inferior 3rd party title above it.

I guess it depends on what you like. In my opinion, the SNES Jurassic Park game was the mediocre one. Very bland if not simply horrible gameplay. The character designs were half assed and cartoony. It's not even one I would consider purchasing. I'm not sure you actually played the Genesis version. Maybe you're mistaken it with the Lost World Genesis game? Maybe the 3DO game? I digress.
I might of been actually.  I was thinking it was some awkward top down view. This looks pretty good actually. Really nice graphics with what looks like prince of Persia vibes going on. I'll try it later on.

Yeah, Lost World JP on Genesis was boring and awkward to play. I still have a copy of it, but it was nothing like the previous two games (JP and JP Rampage Edition). I thought Lost World was going to be more like them when I picked it up. Waste of money.

While the phaser mechanics can be a bit janky at times, being able to go on missions with the crew is actually quite a bit of fun if you're a fan of the show. Pretty good graphics and sound effects from the show make this a pretty good game. Easily in my top 100.

I did see that Sony has released an odd way of being notified about preorders. You can register via your PSN ID to be put into a drawing to preorder a PS5 directly from Sony. No idea of when it will happen or yet what the cost is. I registered but don't anticipate being selected.

I still believe that there will be a delay for next gen. I've also noticed that most next gen launch window games will be cross gen. The title I'm most excited for is Outriders which is also on PS4.

We are about 2-3 months from the launch of the next gen systems assuming that mid November is the original target window for release. There are still many important details that neither Sony or Microsoft have released to the public.

1. Release date
2. Price of the systems
3. Day 1 launch games list

Hell, we haven't even seen the back of the PS5 yet; I'm hoping to see two regular USB ports for VR and external HDD.

I'm sure there are a handful of us that have been saving for a few months for the new system of choice, but there are many consumers that will wait for the above information to be released before they start saving up. They need these details before making the choice on what and when to purchase.

The lack of information from both companies tell me that both could easily be delayed into next year. What are your thoughts? Is 2-3 months enough time for consumers to consider buying a $400-$600 system if they haven't already been saving? If they actually release this fall as stated, I think both will suffer from a lack of sales in comparison to PS4 and X1 because of the delay of information for so long but also because of the obvious lock downs and high unemployment from the global pandemic reactions.

While I played this mostly on 32X, I'm happy to see that Virtua Racing had a version on the regular Genesis for those like me that didn't feel the need to keep the 32X add-on for only 2-3 games. Amazing that the Genesis is able to pull this off.
