General / Re: Rarest Items in Game Collection?
« on: February 21, 2023, 11:53:45 pm »
I have some games that go for a bit of money, but I wouldn't exactly call them rare. Games like Pokemon Emerald, Heart Gold, Black 2 or the mainline DS/3DS Dragon Quest games. In terms of consoles that are rare-ish, I have a Game Boy Light, Virtual Boy, 32X, and Nuon.

The things I would count as rare (being small print run over value) that I own are:

-Tail Concerto (PS1, loose, ~150,000 sold)
-Solatorobo: Red the Hunter (DS, loose, ~100,000 sold)
-Nintendo Roulette board game from the 1960s (complete, ?? made)
-Sutte Hakkun (SFC, loose, ?? sold) It was a very late Super Famicom game release (June '99)
-Retrobit Mega Man: The Wily Wars re-release (GEN, complete, 20,000 made)
-Retrobit Avenging Spirit re-release (GB, complete, 5500 made)
-Rikki & Vikki (7800, complete, 550 made)
-Virtual Boy Works Collector's Edition (book, complete, 500 made)
-Primal Rage Blizzard trophy (?? made) I could only find one video about this trophy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TC54e6vw3aM
-Game Gear Checker cartridge (GG, loose, ?? made) A test cartridge for checking link cable connections between Game Gear consoles.

Finished Mega Man Zero the other day. Overall, while the screen visibility issues were very annoying, I enjoyed the game, especially the last stages. Before tackling Zero 2, I decided to give Hi-Fi Rush a go since that game looked really fun from the trailer and it reminded me of No Straight Roads which I really enjoyed. Finished the first stage and while it's really fun so far, I'm really not used to using an Xbox controller. Having grown up with Nintendo stuff, Microsoft's ABXY placement feel really off to me and takes a while to adjust to.

I've been giving the Mega Man Zero games (playing Zero 1) a try and I'm not sure if the reason people say these games are hard is because of the bosses/levels or because of screen crunch/leaps of faith and enemies shooting at you from off screen. It's reminding me of the GBA version of Mega Man & Bass with these annoyances. The boss fights so far have been fine as long as the boss has stayed on screen where I can see them. The levels in these missions have been disappointing ending so quickly and not being very interesting outside of the occasional enemy shooting at or dropping something on you from off screen.

I'm liking the story, setting, and character designs though. The fact that Zero gets multiple weapons that can be leveled up is pretty neat too.

I played through all of them a few years ago. The first game was my least favorite by far. Had the least amount of content and was definitely the most frustrating. No option to continue and replenish lives was really unfortunate if you saved the game with 0 lives and a difficult stage ahead of you. I also had to change the default controls (I was playing on PS4 with the legacy collection, not sure what you were playing).

My ranking is 3 -> 2 -> 4 -> 1. I prefer the ZX games personally because I feel like they had more to offer.
I'm playing the Legacy Collection on PS4 and I immediately changed the controls to feel more like the Mega Man X games (X jump, Square weapon, Circle dash, L1 is sub-weapon). Good to know that the other games are better.

Not a whole lot at this moment.

Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection
Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Freedom Planet 2 console release
Fuga: Melodies of Steel 2
Oddventure (I'm not even sure if this game's console releases are still in development since they're still listed as 2022)
Plumbers Don't Wear Ties re-release (Again, I'm not sure what the status of this game is since it is/was listed as 2022)

Other than those six games, I'm hoping for a little more information on Dragon Quest III's 2D-HD remake and Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate this year.

Hardware and Tech / Re: Mystery GBA SP EXT.2 cable
« on: December 22, 2022, 10:21:01 pm »
I'm almost 100% positive that cable came with this accessory: https://www.amazon.com/Pelican-Accessories-DS-Battery-Charger-Nintendo/dp/B0009SRZ7Y
I used to have this exact accessory (or something like it) and what you did was you plugged your DS charger into the battery pack charger, and it came with a male to male-cable-that connected from the battery pack charger to the DS so you could charge a battery in the dock and the internal one in the DS at the same time. The amazon customer reviews on this product are a bit vague, but they seem to echo this sentiment. If I recall it didn't work very well, but I haven't had the item since 2007 or 2008, so it's been a long time at this point.

EDIT
Someone is selling one on Facebook Marketplace: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/8211408898932475/
It has a picture of the back of the box showing that it came with the male-to-male cable for DS/GBA SP
Wasn't expecting to find the answer so quickly! Thanks!

Hardware and Tech / Mystery GBA SP EXT.2 cable
« on: December 20, 2022, 11:50:42 pm »
Went to a Goodwill and looked through their bin of assorted cables on Monday and I found what looks like a link cable for a GBA SP. I'm specifically saying GBA SP since both ends of the cable have the same type of connector that the charging cable and headphone jack adapter have that go into the SP/original DS's EXT.2 port. It can't be for link cable stuff since the EXT.2 port isn't wired for that, just power and audio. I thought that maybe it could act as a sort of jumper cable to use another GBA SP to power your GBA SP as dumb and pointless as that'd be, but I got no reaction from either of my SPs when I plugged the cable into both. Looking at a pinout for the EXT.2 port doesn't seem to help much. This cable has four pins: detecting headphones, one side of audio, 5.2V power, and ground. Both ends have the same pins. Does anyone have any ideas what the purpose of this cable is? Does some other electronic device happen to have the exact same port as the GBA SP/DS?
