General / Re: What video game related job/profession would you most want?
« on: November 26, 2022, 02:06:05 pm »
I'm already trying to make my own game, so in that regard, I'm already employed, except I haven't turned much of a profit from devving yet, haha.

I'm looking forward to Pokemon Violet aswell, after skipping LGPE, SwSh and BDSP because of not liking the look of them it feels kinda good to be interested in a Pokemon game again, well, I was interested in Arceus too but I haven't been able to play it yet because I can't afford a Switch. As for other upcoming games, I'm also looking forward to Mina the Hollower, Freedom Planet 2, Street Fighter 6 and Starfield, and I'm mildly interested in Gunbrella, Blanc and Replaced. Ex-Zodiac is right around the corner which also looks good, and another game I was interested in was Small Saga but who knows when that's coming out?

General / Re: Let's Talk About Your On Site Collection Status
« on: April 12, 2022, 04:45:08 pm »
I don't really use this site to track my backlog, played games or games that I'm currently playing, I do that elsewhere, I mostly use this site to track what I own and what's on my wishlist, that said, there are some games that I'm currently playing an some that I abandoned but I plan to go back to sooner or later. I think the games that are the highest priority for me to beat right now are Advance Wars 2 and Klonoa: Door to Phantomile, then there's Daxter and Alwa's Awakening, and a NitW fangame, after that I should go back and try to beat Arkham Origins, Skyrim and Psychonauts, maybe start God of War Ascension and Realms of Chaos, and sadly have to restart Joy Mech Fight and Bucky O'Hare because I lost my saves.

Last year an edit of mine to this version of Wind Waker HD was rejected: https://vgcollect.com/item/99252
the edit in question was a better quality image of the boxart.

I can totally agree that keeping up with the sheer number of releases is just a chore. I finally had gotten to the point where I was buying games on a daily basis and a large portion (probably 75% or more) were titles that I had no interest in ever playing.

I feel the same way, is there really no place to keep track of physical releases? Like a website or app to sign up in to be notified whenever a new physical release or reprint is announced?

As far as I'm concerned, those companies can keep their overpriced wares. I will however, give my money to any company, or retailer who'll continue to print/sell a game for a reasonable amount of time on an open market. Companies like ININ, which retail on Amazon have been printing and selling their obscure releases for a good while now. None of that arbitrary 2500 copies only! Get yours on so and so date, or miss out bullshit. So, I'll happily buy games put out by ININ. Companies like Strictly Limited can kiss my ass, and I'd never considering buying any of that noise second hand either.

I've been collecting Switch since 2018, and most of my library consists of indie titles put out physically, however all of them are true retail titles that anyone could get fairly priced with reasonable effort. My most recent acquisition was Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion; an obscure indie title put out by Graffiti games. If Limited Run had put that out, they'd do maybe 3,000 copies and charge $40 for it. Graffiti is reprinting as long as will be viable, and it retailed at $25. I'll continue to pick up titles like this, in support of smaller publishers with reasonable and non-gimmick based productions. The rest might as well not even be a thing, as far as I care. Doesn't matter what they put out, I won't support their shenanigans in the least.

I appreciate you mentioning those two publishers because I've been wondering for a while what publisher should I go with in case I ever made a game, especially when it comes to physical releases. I'd never want to put people through the BS I already have to go through with LRG. By the way, what do you think about Fangamer? Their physical indie releases don't seem too limited.

But I'm not even necessarily talking about a full set, just going after good or decent games on the console.

Yeah, that's always been my approach when collecting games, be it for modern or retro consoles, though that might also have to do with the fact that I never had much money to begin with (still don't) so I've always had to be picky when it comes to buying games, which I still am.

General / Re: Happy March! What are you all getting this month?
« on: March 02, 2022, 01:09:31 pm »
I was about to buy a Switch OLED but with the announcement of Pokemon Scarlet & Violet I think I'll wait until the inevitable special edition Switch that will come out for those games, now, if that special edition Switch will be an OLED or not is anybody's guess, but TPCI's track record seems to point to the contrary, since both the Sword & Shield and Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl special editions Switches were both Lite models, and I'm pretty sure the only reason Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee got a special edition standard Switch was because the Lite wasn't out yet. I'll still probably buy Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition this month though.

Classic Video Games / Re: What game are you acquiring next?
« on: February 18, 2022, 01:05:15 pm »
Not sure what game I might get next, since that depends on a few factors, I´m kinda waiting until Pokemon Day to see if Arceus gets any DLC, if it does, I might wait until the end of the year to get a physical release of it assuming it gets one with all the DLC included like Sword and Shield did, and if it doesn´t, I might pick it up soon. I might also get Kirby when it releases but there´s a chance LRG´s Quake release might ship before that, I´m also waiting to see if Goldeneye is officially announced for switch and xbox to see which platform I should get it for, and I´ll probably pick up Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition sooner rather than later in an attempt to play through it and 2 before 3 comes out.

General / Re: Box art / Game packaging
« on: February 15, 2022, 04:11:13 pm »
I´ll be honest, many times the boxart is a factor which determines whether I get a game physically or digitally, if a boxart is boring or lame I might be more inclined to purchase a game digitally, same applies if a game has a silly or bland title which might not look very cool displayed on a shelf. I might make some exceptions though if the game in question is part of a series I´ve been collecting for for a while, so in that case I might get the game physically even if I´m not too keen on the boxart, like with pokemon sun, the boxart for which I personally think looks odd because of Solgaleo´s face seeming kinda flat, which would likely have looked better at a different angle.
Regarding different types of boxes, I personally like the european PS1 ones, possibly better than the american ones since the european ones feel kinda sturdy with how thick they are, while the american ones feel incredibly fragile, like they´d crack if you looked at them the wrong way, I hate the european DS game boxes though, and I´m not too keen on how the PS2 and gamecube ones look over there either, I also prefer the look of the ESRB logo over the PEGI ones and others from the region, or any rating that has numbers in it for that matter, as I much prefer letters in those.
As for retro games that used to come in cartridges I gotta say I don´t miss cardboard boxes at all since those get damaged very easily, and I´ve been considering getting replacement boxes for several of those, like those DS-looking boxes for game boy games and the VHS-looking ones for N64 and SNES titles. I´ve also thought about printing my own custom boxart for games that have cover art I´m not too keen on but still want to own physically.

I´m not going to list any I played but didn´t actually own like the switch as I feel like that´s cheating since I didn´t play them enough to have an informed opinion on the matter, and I saw someone else listing mini consoles which I wasn´t initially going to list as I felt they didn´t count but since someone else did I guess I might aswell, especially since I never owned an NES or an SNES.

Anyway, for me, in regards to home consoles it´s:

1: Gamecube
2: Nintendo 64
3: Wii U
4: NES mini
5: Wii
6: SNES mini

As for handhelds:

1: Game Boy Color
2: Nintendo DS
3: Game Boy Advance
4: Nintendo 3DS

Classic Video Games / Re: GameCube 20th Anniversary
« on: November 19, 2021, 03:21:22 pm »
I was pretty late to the party with this console, I think I only got it around 2005 because back then I was young and didn't have money of my own and as such I had to rely on the generosity of the adults in my family. I remember being excited about it ever since it first released, watching commercials  for the console and games on TV, reading about them on magazines and even seeing them showcased in game shows, not to mention visiting websites and watching videos online before YouTube was a thing, needless to say I have very fond memories with the console, and when I got one, I really felt it delivered. Got a platinum one and I had to choose 4 games, and I went with Super Mario Sunshine, Melee, Wind Waker and Thousand Year Door. Loved Melee, Wind Waker and TTYD, even though I could never get around to playing TTYD in it's entirety a second time, and even to this day I'm bothered there never was a Wind Waker rerelease that adds back the cut content, and there might never be one. Despite loving those three games I was disappointed with Sunshine to the point I could never bring myself to finish it, I went in with high expectations though, but I ended up selling it. I eventually got around to playing other games besides the initial batch of four, mostly bought but one lent. Got Tales of Symphonia, Metroid Prime, Star Fox Adventures, Twilight Princess and Resident Evil 4, and borrowed Pokemon XD from a friend but gave it back to him after beating it. Wasn't too impressed with Pokemon XD but I much prefer the graphical style it went with than that of recent Pokemon games. Beat Metroid Prime and sold it to later get the Prime Trilogy on Wii. Enjoyed Star Fox Adventures despite it's bad reputation but I couldn't stand the voice acting in the game, eventually sold it but I kinda miss it, might buy it again someday, I dunno. Had fun with Resident Evil 4, beat it a few times but sold it expecting to buy one of the rereleases, which I still have to do, LMAO. Still keep ToS and TP despite both games having had rereleases, might sell TP after beating the Wii U version because I was somewhat disappointed with it as I didn't feel it managed to capture the feel of earlier Zelda games properly on top of being too easy, hoping both it and ToS are rereleased on the switch though.
Unfortunately I sold my Gamecube to be able to buy Brawl back in the day, but I would like to buy another one when I get the money for it. I eventually got other games on a trip to Europe, another copy of Melee for collection purposes, and also because it was cheap (only 15 euros, I assume it was because it was an NTSC game being sold in a PAL region), and a copy of Waverace, which I sadly haven't gotten around to playing, but that's partly because I don't have the room to put my Wii and Gamecube games right now, though I might try organizing my battlestation to free up some space soon.
I remember one time when I went to the game store and had to pick between Resident Evil 4 and Star Fox Assault and went with Resident Evil 4 because of the reviews, which was a good choice at the time, but the game went on to have many rereleases while Assault was never rereleased, I tried to buy it recently at a store which had it at a pretty decent price though, but by the time I got there someone else had already bought it. Sometimes I can't help but think about which games I could have gotten that are currently on my wish-list here over games that I wasn't too keen on or that got rereleases, but there's no reason to stop at exclusives, some multiplats had good versions on Gamecube too, better than those on the other consoles in some cases even.

Finally picked up Bug Fables yesterday, got Link's Awakening DX recently too.

Thanks! And yeah, I had some questions. I just so happen to have games such as Melee and Brawl which have several releases with different item numbers and I was wondering where in their boxes and/or discs should I check for those item numbers. I was also considering picking up games from other consoles such as the Switch and PS4 that also had more than a single print and therefore have listings with different item numbers, such as the Spyro Reignited Trilogy and Mario Oddyssey, and I would like to pick up the latest versions which should theoretically have all the patches on the disc or cartridge, and it would be ideal to know which version it is without having to remove the shrink wrap should I buy them sealed and then realize I got an older version, assuming of course those item numbers would be visible somewhere in the boxart. The question also applies to identify loose cartridges one might aquire for listings that have the boxart as the difference between two or more different versions, such as Pokemon Snap on the N64, which I would probably get loose and then try to figure out which print I got considering the listings for the game have the boxart as the most apparent difference.

Say, I was wondering why my edit to this cover of Wind Waker HD was rejected: https://vgcollect.com/item/99252
The one currently up doesn't look to be very high quality, and while my edit wasn't of the greatest quality either, I thought it still looked sharper than the one currently up, for the lack of a better term.

Your edit was rejected due to the proposed artwork being incorrect—not due to its quality. The artwork you proposed is for an item already within the database located here.

Right, but I could swear the version I posted didn't have that three-colored circular "stamp" in the corner that says "U.A.E., Sauda Arabia, Malaysia, Singapore Official Product".

Video Game Database Discussion / Identifying different game versions
« on: September 25, 2021, 11:47:10 am »
So, I've been going through my collection trying to add the games I have and those I want to my respective lists on this site, but I've been a bit confused considering there are several different versions for many games for which the only apparent difference seems to be the serial code next to the name in this site's listings, so my question is, is there any sort of guide on how to identify each of these different versions on a console by console basis? Is one supposed to look for these serial codes in the boxes themselves or on the disks/cartridges?

Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated.
