General / To buy or not to buy
« on: August 02, 2016, 09:56:29 pm »
I'm on vacation in Alabama and have been game hunting with the bf (gotta love shared interests <3 ).

What do you all think?

Pokemon Snap with box and manual: $30
Secret of Evermore with box (not sure if it has other inserts/booklet until I see it in person): $55

Purchase or don't? Condition for both seems to be fair with acrylic boxes to help protect them on the trip home.

I just got my copy of Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition limited edition and was dismayed to find that it's not a DRM-free copy.

It does look like it comes with a disc, but the code is on the disc itself, apparently, according to the label on the back of the box:

I know physical copies of PC games that are DRM-free go into the PC category. However, since this requires Steam and is basically a Steam code with a useless disc after redemption, my gut says this item belongs in the Steam category.

There are a few other items out there that were physical editions that included an emailed code or voucher for the Steam game, and those were placed into the Steam category. For example, OXENFREE

Anyway, just thought I'd check in with the forum about it. It's not very clearly labeled in our Steam/digital games guide as it doesn't say which category to put the item in.

Hey all,

I just got my Grand Kingdom Grand Edition and am a little disappointed by how it ended up getting packaged, especially considering the cost. But hey, that's the gamble with preorders:

Anyway, as you see, it's actually two boxes. It looks like the box on the left is actually the "limited edition" (according to the text on the back) while the box on the right is what makes it the "grand edition," a box of the other goodies, I assume.

This is also why I make it a rule for myself to not add anything to my collection until after I have it in my hand, because I think I should change the record here: http://vgcollect.com/item/102239
so that it only reflects what is in that Grand Edition box (while the user then has to additionally add the Limited Edition to their collection).

Anyway, I know a few games have been issuing these separate CE boxes (without game)... for instance,
Lara Croft's Gold Edition: https://www.amazon.com/Lara-Croft-Temple-Osiris-Included-Pc/dp/B00O1Z3FMK

We don't have an entry for the American version of the Gold Edition as far as I can tell, so I didn't have anything to compare to.

Folks have any thoughts on these separate CE boxes?
I assume we want to indicate that they do not include the game.
Do we catalog it with games or as "swag"?

I guess once we rename "swag" to "collectibles," then it might sound more appropriate.

I run into it occasionally in comments (why do I even bother reading them) or tweets to announcements of any goodies a publisher throws in for a pre-order bonus, launch edition, or collector's edition.

I've noticed in the last few months that there are some people who just don't like SteelBook cases. I think they're pretty neat, personally, though I'd like it to be included in addition to the regular box, not as a replacement.

I think the recent trend of stickers is pretty lame as I'm not the sort to put stickers on my stuff, and they don't really hold up well for display or as a nice thing to show off. I love artbooks if they're done well, and I didn't care for soundtracks for a long time up until just about two years ago (when I started streaming) because I like playing the music from the soundtrack at the beginning and end of the cast.

Shirts can be cool, but it's almost always a men's large sized shirt, so I can never wear it. Figurines are sweet, but I never take them out of the box, really because I don't want to break up the collector's item (the whole package).

What do you all think? Is there swag you love or hate when you see it announced? Is there anything that turns you off completely?

Video Game Deals, Sales and Promotions / GOG Summer Sale
« on: June 08, 2016, 09:57:59 pm »
Looks like GOG has a summer sale going on, and they have some freebies that involve some minor work, similar to what Steam used to do in previous summer sales.

https://www.gog.com/

They're giving away games like System Shock 2, Spelunky, Gabriel Knight, and Dreamfall Chapters Season Pass.

General / GOG Connect
« on: June 01, 2016, 09:12:12 pm »
Very interesting announcement from GOG.com today, basically letting you have a free DRM-free copy of eligible Steam titles that you already own:

https://www.gog.com/connect

This is very cool as GOG copies often come with digital goodies not available normally, like soundtracks, older versions of the games (for instance, Broken Sword 1 is a remastered, director's-cut version on Steam, but the GOG version gives you that game in addition to the original PC version which some users prefer).

The titles eligible for adding to your account seems to change out as agreements change out, but whatever you add to your GOG collection is permanent, so it's worth checking on every once in a while.

Just wondering what you all thought:

Publisher website says "limited edition":
http://valkyria.sega.com/purchase.html

But game itself has a sticker that reads "special edition":

The database title originally said "limited edition," but I changed it, but then I thought I'd check with all of you :)

General / First Game Ever Purchased
« on: April 15, 2016, 03:55:03 pm »
Hi all!

I think there was another thread a while back about the first console/game system you ever purchased, but not sure if there's one about the first game you ever bought :)

I think the first game I ever bought was Golden Sun [GBA]

I wish I recalled where I bought it. I just remember that I had the plastic on it for as long as I could. I kept one drawer in my bedroom's dresser pretty empty, so I kept some precious things in there, and one of those was GS. I still have the CIB game, and it holds some great sentimental value. Time to get a protective case for it and my other GBA boxes :)

Hey all,

I already have Bravely Second CE preordered from Gamestop but saw that Amazon, too, had retailer-exclusive DLC to offer for their preorders. I thought I'd go ahead and preorder the standard edition to get the DLC and just return or give the game to the bf or a friend.

I was surprised to find that, along with my order confirmation email, I received another email with the DLC code on it. (Usually these sort of emails get sent the day of shipping or approximately that time.) I suppose at this point I can just cancel the order and avoid the cost of returning the item to Amazon.

Just thought I'd let other folks know in case they were in the same position.

Gamestop has its own exclusive DLC as well, but I'm sure that will be printed on the receipt after purchase.

General / Interesting games for region-free consoles/handhelds?
« on: February 29, 2016, 02:24:01 pm »
Hey all, I was wondering if folks had any interesting titles they might want to suggest for consoles/handhelds that aren't region-locked.

I don't have many import games because of language barriers, but I picked up a few for my DS and PS3 & Vita since they're not region-locked and the games were of interest.

So far I have:

Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan
Moero! Nekketsu Rhythm Damashii: Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 2
Last Window: The Secret Of Cape West
Steins;Gate - El Psy Kongroo Limited Edition (EU)

The first two are in Japanese, but since they're basically Elite Beat Agents, I figured the language difference wouldn't be *too* much of a problem, though I haven't tried to play them yet.

Last Window: The Secret Of Cape West was never released in the US but is the sequel to the Hotel Dusk, which I enjoyed quite a bit.

Steins;Gate sold out for the US version of that particular edition, so EU was the only way I could get those goodies :P

Someone else in another thread mentioned Carcassonne for the DS, which seems to only have come out in Germany or such but has an English language setting available.

What other titles might be of interest to people? I, unfortunately, only know English, so the game would need to be in English or not rely heavily on text to play it. I'm open to learning Japanese, however, if it's not too complex (might encourage my Japanese studies :) ).

Video Game Database Discussion / Saturday Morning RPG Soundtrack bundle
« on: February 12, 2016, 03:00:02 pm »
I just got my shipment today of the game, so hopefully everyone will be getting theirs soon if not already if they were able to get a copy.

I was wondering what you all thought about the item listing for the soundtrack bundle (http://vgcollect.com/item/96659).  The game was sold as a standalone copy but a limited run of "soundtrack bundles" were also available. I'm feeling kinda iffy about it because the soundtrack is not physically bundled with the game but instead loose (they said that this would be the case in their Twitter posts).

Should we just have a separate swag item record for the soundtrack?  The soundtrack can be marked to say that it was only sold in limited bundles with either the Vita or PS4 version of the game...

I'm just thinking of games that may have been shipped with a preorder artbook that was not bundled physically to the game, so those items were created as separate records (this also allows people to add them to their collections should they manage to get a copy without the game).  Here's an example of an artbook that was not physically bundled with the game at purchase but was given out: http://vgcollect.com/item/24117

Just thought I'd see what you all thought :)

User Feedback / gf78
« on: January 25, 2016, 06:24:33 pm »
Can't vouch for how the games play yet as I haven't tested them, but just wanted to leave feedback on appearance and communication:

Shipping: Super fast! reasonable cost and priority 2-day shipping. I paid on Thursday, and everything arrived Monday morning.
Communication: Great communication, very quick response, gave a tracking number and everything.
Packaging: Packing peanuts and plastic bags to keep the weather out (thankfully a dry day today), even a little bubble wrap against the discs in the PS1 case so as to protect the the jewel case and contents further (much appreciated!)
Items as described: All the items look great and as described.

Would definitely do business with again!
