Video Game Database Discussion / Nintendo DS duplicate consoles
« on: December 22, 2016, 10:49:08 am »
What is this item? Platinum Silver, no TLD.
https://vgcollect.com/item/14497

Is it a dupe of this?
https://vgcollect.com/item/7885 (US Silver original release with Metroid demo)
or
https://vgcollect.com/item/113728 (JP Platinum Silver)

or is it possible to be another version? I do not recognize anyone who has it in collection at a quick glance. I am thinking to merge it with 7885. Does anyone else have any ideas?

There are some others in this hardware category with no TLD on it, want to make sure there are not other dupes. This category seems to be kept up pretty well.

The app finally gave up for me. I opened it and it crashed. So then I closed it and tried again, now it just says "Unable to reach server." I had used it up until yesterday with no problems.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/122206951040

Another item on my "unconfirmed existence" ebay saved search list. Now confirmed, added to database, but still don't have box artwork.

NOTE: for anyone interested in buying this item, these disks are notoriously unreliable. I've heard these disks referred to as "the worst invention ever" before.

Site Feedback / Not receiving email when getting PM
« on: October 10, 2016, 10:57:57 am »
I had thought I noticed this before, but I can say for sure now. I got 2 PM over the weekend and had not received any email from the site about it. I didn't know I had the PM until I visited the forum this morning.

If others have this issue too, you can post about it here. Just in case this isn't just my email provider being weird.

Video Game Database Discussion / Club Nintendo Luigi's Mansion variant?
« on: September 09, 2016, 11:07:13 am »
Anyone who has or knows what these are:
http://vgcollect.com/item/56803
Club Nintendo Luigi's Manson diorama.

This entry needs new images but the box front and cart images are showing two different boxes. Is this a variation or a different regional release?

Box type 1: Luigi wearing purple overalls.
Box type 2: Luigi wearing blue overalls, hat sticker on top right, description text below The Year of Luigi logo.

The diorama part looks to be the same for both box versions.

Video Game Database Discussion / We have a SimCity SNES problem
« on: September 06, 2016, 07:17:28 pm »
There are 2 versions of SimCity on SNES [NA]
- with ESRB rating
- without ESRB rating

How it is on VGC
No ESRB rating: http://vgcollect.com/item/15515 in 298 collections
w/ ESRB rating: http://vgcollect.com/item/28073 in 20 collections
some other SimCity added later: http://vgcollect.com/item/60242 in 218 collections

This unmarked one needs to get merged, unless there is some 3rd version I am not aware of that it represents. Checking Ebay, it seems the breakdown is 60/40 non vs ESRB version.

What should we do with this extra SimCity entry?

Game collection series games are all over the place. Should we put the series before the game title or after? Here are some examples.

Sega Ages 2500: http://vgcollect.com/item/79498
Fantasy Zone Complete Collection - SEGA AGES 2500 Series Vol.33
vs
Sega Ages 2500 vol.33: Fantasy Zone: Complete Collection

NeoGeo Online Collection: http://vgcollect.com/item/38693
Garou Densetsu: Battle Archives 1 - NeoGeo Online Collection Vol. 5
vs
NeoGeo Online Collection Vol. 5 - Garou Densetsu: Battle Archives 1

Psikyo Shooting Collection: http://vgcollect.com/item/75564
Soul Divide/Dragon Blaze - Psikyo Shooting Collection Vol. 3
vs
Psikyo Shooting Collection Vol. 3 - Soul Divide & Dragon Blaze

Laser Soft Visual Collection: http://vgcollect.com/item/13701
Valis Visual Shuu - Laser Soft Visual Collection Volume II
vs
Laser Soft Visual Collection Volume II - Valis Visual Shuu

I am thinking collection series should be at the beginning of the title, and the game name after. What do you think we should do?

Video Game Database Discussion / The Collection naming discussion
« on: August 30, 2016, 11:42:33 am »
I'm looking at a lot of games that have The in the title and also Collection and wonder about the correct way it should be written.

King of Fighters Collection, The: The Orochi Saga
http://vgcollect.com/item/13121
The series title is The King of Fighters. Should it be
a ) King of Fighters Collection, The: The Orochi Saga (current name)
or
b ) King of Fighters, The: Collection: The Orochi Saga

will post more example when I find them.

General / German USK labelling question
« on: June 10, 2016, 11:17:08 am »
While doing my research on Sega Superstars Tennis, I found that in Germany there are at least 5 different USK labels. The first two (small and large) appear to be legit cover variations, but the label versions make me wonder. Where do these labels come from? Are they applied during manufacturing or is it something that an individual store does? If anyone from Germany (or whatever) can shed some light on these labels, it will be helpful.

Foreign Language Cheat Sheet
----------
VGCollect uses English as the primary language and this is reflected in many ways. Our search will substitute most special characters as their plain versions. For example, searching for Pokemon will return Pokémon in the results and vice-versa. This is helpful for people to not know how to type these special characters, or people from other countries that do not use them or
understand the language being presented.

As chroniclers of video game history, we must use the correct representation as much as possible, even if we ourselves do not use that language or type of script. As such, we should be using the appropriate characters and item names as it currently fits within the existing rules of the Style Guide.

If you feel this is too much to worry about, then I suggest that you do not work on game entries in a foreign language where you are not comfortable.

NOTE: If it is found that a certain letter does not translate to a plain Latin letter used in the English language, it should be reported on.

French Language
(In)Definate Articles of French language
Le, La, Les (the)
Un, Une (A or An)

The situation where À is at the beginning of a title. As opposed to English, the À at the beginning of a French title means At. At is allowed to start a title. The Golden Compass was released in France as À la Croisée des Mondes: la Boussole D'Or. It is a little strange to see that A is allowed at the beginning here but not in English, but it is because it is not A.
http://vgcollect.com/item/91109

The situation where L is added as a prefix to a French word does not apply to the Style Guide.
For example:
The Incredible Hulk (Nintendo) NA would be put into the database as Incredible Hulk, The
http://vgcollect.com/item/29908
In France, the title is L'Incroyable Hulk (The Incredible Hulk) Because the L (The) is part of the word Incroyable, it cannot be then removed and placed at the end of the title. Therefore the title is correct as L'Incroyable Hulk:

Rejected an edit to Nintendo Power v177 Alt cover entry here:
http://vgcollect.com/item/53868

Current image is the retail cover (see barcode). The image edit done was to change to the subscription cover. This cover does not have a barcode on it and would have the address label on the bottom. Another difference is that the retail version does not have the black text box above the top picture on the right, while the subscription version does.

So this topic is for discussion on whether people care about how picky we should be regarding magazine or comic covers. From my own experience in comic collecting, I have not met anyone who cares about having both the retail and sub versions of a comic or magazine.
