The history of the "Hardware" sections on the site started off being a hodgepodge of specific boxed consoles, generic boxed consoles, specific loose consoles and generic loose consoles. After awhile they have all been converted into specific boxed consoles with the specific loose or generic consoles merged into a boxed equivalent. There are still some instances of generic boxed console entries existing, such as in the Xbox categories.

Once I had started the Adv Guide for Gen/MD, I had determined that it would be greatly helpful to be able to make a list of entries that a console would relate to. You can see that post here. Starting with Genesis consoles, it was going along fairly well with the exception of the Model 1 Non-TMSS Made in China console. As I went to document all of these console releases, I was also updating the console entries to indicate which console came in the box, which you can see by clicking through to any of the example packs in that thread.

Then came European releases, starting with UK. It became obvious after a little bit that Sega used outer boxes a lot in EU. This complicates things to a degree because it means many entries (examples here and here) were of inner boxes. To make matters worse, often these inner boxes were used in various countries. Such as an MDII with 2 Controllers box was sold on its own in UK, as an inner box in UK, as a white label pack in UK (example here), as an inner box in France, as an inner box in Germany, and so on... and in addition, coming with different consoles. So there are instances where this inner box comes with the French console (Mega Drive RGB) or with the German console (Mega Drive PAL-G). Then there are UK (-05) and EU (-50) consoles that have a TÜV Rheinland label on the bottom, indicating they are sold in Germany. To make matters worse, the outer boxes are not well documented and many have not survived to this day, and then since there are so many releases in EU, it is increasingly difficult to match up consoles to boxes.

We can surmise that most people have loose consoles more than boxed consoles, and while I think that documenting all of the boxed consoles is important (there are few, if any, websites that track them to the degree that we do) I think that it is also important to consider providing a better way for users to track loose consoles. Also to consider that the more work we put into console release research, the more confusing the Hardware categories become.

So this discussion is about whether or not we should accomodate entries for loose consoles, how it should be done such as with a new category just for loose consoles, and also which platforms is this best to be used for. With this consideration, we would not need to track loose consoles for everything. For example with PS2, there is a very small amount of consoles that have multiple boxes.

This will be put up as a poll, this thread is for intro discussion already. Here are the potential options:
YES/NO. Create new sub-cats in certain cats for loose consoles (existing hardware cat will be for the boxed releases)

Currently this is being tabled as a YES/NO discussion and not one with multiple different choices, although your participation in this discussion may change that. I believe that it should not be an option to allow the creation of loose console entries in the existing hardware sub-cats. Also if we get to the point of approving the new sub-cats for loose consoles, we'll have to decide how to name the categories.

Systems that would benefit having a loose console sub-cat (due to many consoles sharing multiple different boxes)
- NES/FC
- SNES/SFC
- GC
- Wii
- SMS
- Gen/MD
- Saturn
- Dreamcast

Potential Poll options for question: Create new sub-cats for loose consoles?
1. Yes: create loose console catagories as needed and make entries for all console models
2. No: allow creation of loose console entries but only for console models that are not known what box they came in.
3. No: leave it as is and the user can use the Checkbox and Notes field when adding an item into their collection.

Site Feedback / Feature Request: Main Site BST additions
« on: June 10, 2021, 11:40:14 am »
After going through and adding some things to the Sell List, and looking at other users' Sell List or Wish List, there are some things that I would like to request in order to make this part of the site more usable.

The first thing that comes to mind is the (apparent) issue where additions to sell list does not show up in the Feed. Possibly one thing that could be added is getting a notification when an item on your wish list is added to someone else's sell list.

However the big thing I am thinking about is adding trade matching. Say you are on a user's sell list page. You want a game but maybe want to do a trade. How do you know what that other person wants? You go to their wishlist page but it could have 300 items on there. Then you have to find one that you have.

A trade matching feature would be one where you could click a button or something that would show a list of items that are on your sell list that matches items on their wish list. You can then say, I have this item you want and you have this item I want, want to do a trade? And it could be done a lot quicker if the site shows this comparison than spending a huge amount of time comparing up lists on your own.

This thread is have a list of international classifieds websites that can be used when researching. If you know any that have been missed, reply and we can add it to this post.

1. You can do individual country search on any Ebay by using Advanced Search and choose located in, however some items may not show up due to the Ebay you use and what your location is. For example, people who sell from say... Germany but only ship to EU will have listings that won't show up on Ebay US but will show up on an EU Ebay. Also, when searching on international using advanced, make sure to change Item Location option from Default to Worldwide.

2. Some language knowledge or use of a translator is needed as these are all localised websites.

3. Although not listed, it seems that there are active Facebook Buy/Sell groups for many cities (countries) around the world.

Please read the entire thread before choosing a poll option. Poll will run for 7 days (give or take) and the results will win out and become the rule. Users have the ability to change their vote. Rules in the Style Guide can be voted on again in the future or new ones can be brought. You can submit additional ideas to bring up for voting in this thread:
https://vgcollect.com/forum/index.php/topic,8361.0.html

This poll is specifically to determine as to which category a physical game release should be put in if the packaging features branding or compatibility information relating to more than 1 console release with a console release family. Multi-platform releases such as those for microcomputers (C64, Amstrad, Spectrum, etc) or game releases with peripheral requirements (such as Sega CD 32X) are not being considered at this time.

Examples
1. Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One and Xbox Series X titles often have co-branding on the front, sometimes showing multiple console names on the case or the cover, or may have a case/cover for a specific console and a label for another console. Most Xbox games will have text on the back to indicate which console the game is actually for, irrespective of what branding may exist on the front cover.

Gears Tactics has front text in the black box as "Xbox Series X - Xbox One" and an Xbox Series X label. On the back cover is the text: "For use only with Xbox One or new consoles with optical drive." The disc has the Xbox logo, and text "Xbox Series X - Xbox One" The game entry currently exists in the Xbox One [NA] category.

Bully Scholarship Edition has logos on the case for Xbox One and Xbox 360. It has text in the black bar on the cover "Plays on Xbox One and Xbox 360". It has text on the cover "Xbox 360 Game will download to Xbox One console." It has text on the back: "For use with Xbox 360 entertainment systems with NTSC designation." The disc has Xbox One and Xbox 360 logos. The game entry currently exists in the Xbox One [NA] category.

Sneak King has on the front cover only Xbox logo, but the cover design is based on the Xbox 360 design. Front cover has text "Includes Xbox 360 and Original Xbox Versions." Back cover has text "For use only with Original Xbox and Xbox 360 entertainment systems with NTSC designation." The game entry currently exists in the Xbox 360 [NA] category, but you can see on the history tab that the platform has been changed multiple times over the past 10 years.

2. PlayStation 4 games released with PlayStation 5 compatibility notes. These are games that are PS4 games that when used on a PS5, it will download the game from PSN. The PS4 disc is not playable on PS5.

Watch Dogs Legion has the PS4 cover design and logo at top. It has text on cover: "PS5 Upgrade Available." It has text on the back "Upgrade to the digital PS5 version of the game at no additional cost. To upgrade eligible PS4 disc copies, players need a PS5 console with a disc drive." and "Licensed for play on PS4 systems in the United States." The game disc has the PS4 branding. This game entry is currently in the PS4 [NA] category.

3. Atari 2600 red box releases are 2600 games that were released during the lifespan of the Atari 7800 and feature compatibility text on the packaging.

Venture has front cover text "Atari 2600 Video Game Cartridge." It has back text "For use with Atari 2600 and 7800 Series Systems." The cartridge label has text "Atari 2600 Video Game Cartridge" and "Atari 2600." This game entry is currently in the Atari 2600 [NA] category.

4. PlayStation games showing forward compatibility for PS2.

Kowai Shashin has text on obi-strip:
このソフトは
"PlayStation"
"PlayStation"(PS one)
"PlayStation 2"
のどれでも遊べます
It is currently in the PlayStation [JP] category

The choices are as follows:
Method 1: Co-branded games go in the category of the newest console
If an item has branding or mention of multiple consoles, the item will go into the category for the newer one.
Implications using the Examples
Gears Tactics -> Xbox Series X
Bully Scholarship Edition -> Xbox One
Sneak King -> Xbox 360
Watch Dogs Legion -> PS5
Venture -> 7800
Kowai Shashin -> PS2

Method 2: Co-branded games go in the category of the oldest console
If an item has branding or mention of multiple consoles, the item will go into the category for the older one.
Implications using the Examples
Gears Tactics -> Xbox One
Bully Scholarship Edition -> Xbox 360
Sneak King -> Xbox
Watch Dogs Legion -> PS4
Venture -> 2600
Kowai Shashin -> PS1

Method 3: Co-branded games that have compatibility info go into the category represented by that text, if compatibility text is not present then it goes into the category of the newer console
The "compatibility text" specified in this method is directly relating to games that specifically refer to a single console as being what the game is designed for. This relates mostly to the Xbox titles.
Implications using the Examples
Gears Tactics -> Xbox One
Bully Scholarship Edition -> Xbox 360
Sneak King -> Xbox 360
Watch Dogs Legion -> PS4
Venture -> 7800
Kowai Shashin -> PS2

Method 5: Create co-branded game categories
Rather than having to continuously have edit battles or disagreements as to which category one of these types of games belongs to, we would create new categories for multi-branded games as needed. Now this option would also apply to computers and micro computers. NOTE: this would only apply to items that have branding or compatibility text, and would not allow all PS1 games to be put into a PS1 / PS2 category.
Implications using the Examples
Gears Tactics -> Xbox One / Xbox Series X
Bully Scholarship -> Xbox 360 / Xbox One
Sneak King -> Xbox / Xbox 360
Watch Dogs Legion -> PS4 / PS5
Kowai Shashin -> PS1 / PS2
additonally, it opens up these types of categories to be created as needed:
PC / MAC
PC / MAC / Linux
C64 / Amstrad
etc

You can change your mind and change your vote if you like. Poll is set for 10 days until expiration.

Site Feedback / Submit New Item button missing from top menu
« on: April 27, 2021, 04:24:29 pm »
Admin is doing work on the site, as announced here:
https://vgcollect.com/forum/index.php/topic,11409.0.html

As a result, the top menu has a new button called "More Lists" which shows 2 options when hovering. This change removed the Submit New Item when viewing category or collection pages. You can still get to this button by searching for something (which you should be doing anyways, hint hint) just as it normally would.

We should wait until Admin is done doing work on the site before reporting the button is missing. The redesign process may not yet be done yet.

A conflict in the Style Guide has been found and we will need to rectify it using a poll, but for now we will have this discussion thread.

At the top of the Platform post of the Adv Guide:

Quote
Games Released for multiple or co-branded platforms
There are some instances where a game release has multiple branding or compatibilities listed. In older titles this was mostly seen for micros, but has also become more common as modern consoles enter transition periods. In these instances, the game should be put into the category for the newer console.

Examples
- Xbox 360 / Xbox One co-branding: should go into Xbox One category. See Bully - Scholarship Edition
- Xbox One / Xbox Series X co-branding: should go into Xbox Series X category. See Gears Tactics
- PlayStation 4 / PlayStation 5 co-branding: should go into PlayStation 5 category. See Need Example

Games where another platform is marked as compatible
There are some game releases for a specific platform, but mention compatibility for another platform on the packaging. These types of items should be put into the category that the release is meant for, and to note the compatibility in Description field, and put the relevant compatibility text into Box Text.

Examples
- Xbox One branding with Xbox Series X compatibility note, should go into Xbox One category. See The Dark Pictures: Little Hope
- PS4 branding with PS5 compatibility note, should go into PS4 category. See Watch Dogs: Legion

The original or un-written rule, pre-community investment and pre-adv Guide was that a game release that is branded for multiple console was to classify them as for the most recent console. This was particularly in reference to older systems such as Atari 2600/7800 and various micros in Europe. And along with it came the Xbox 360 / Xbox One releases, where they ended up in Xbox One categories.

However, something happened just recently with the introduction of the Xbox One / Xbox One X and PS4 / PS5 co-branded releases that some had thought that the games should be in a category based on what the packaging actually said. And this concept was put into the Adv Guide as the two sections:
- Co-branding
- Co-branding with compatibility note

However, the examples shown in the first section (Bully and Gears Tactics) are actually not valid examples for that, and are instead relative examples for compatibility notes. And there are edit wars over items moving them to different categories (one user keeps trying to put an Xbox 360 Oblivion entry into the Xbox One category) and many dupes have been created and edits have been put in to move Star Wars Squadrons around.

As Gears Tactics was in the Xbox Series X category, before actual covers became available where it was found it has this text: "For use only with Xbox One or new consoles with optical drive" and now it is in the Xbox One category.

Bully Scholarship Edition has a similar situation where it has text: "For use with Xbox 360 entertainment systems with NTSC designation", but is currently in the Xbox One category and not the Xbox 360 category.

The possible solutions that we can have (may +/- more later as the discussion progresses)
1. Co-branded games go in the category of the newest console
2. Co-branded games go in the category of the oldest console
3. Co-branded games that have compatibility info go into the category represented by that text, if compatibility text is not present then it goes into the category of the newer console
4. Create co-branded game categories ala Sega CD 32X [NA]*

*note: it is worth it to point out that the Sega CD 32X example is alone in this to only have the [NA] category, while the other regions do not have a separate category.
And this would include things such as:
- PS4 / PS5
- Xbox 360 / Xbox One
- Xbox One / Xbox One X
- Atari 7800 / 2600 (these games are currently in the 2600 category)

Also note that this discussion is only in reference to branding and NOT having anything to do with compatibilities that exist beyond that, such as the fact that 2600 games can be played on a 7800, PlayStation games can be played on a PS3 or GameCube games can be played on a Wii.... or most cartridge or disc based games can be played on a computer with appropriate hardware and/or software.

Also note that this does not resolve the other issue that faces micros in Europe, where single game releases for multiple current systems were made. I can't think of a specific example at the moment, but there are various games that may support both C64 and Amstrad CPC, among others.

Please read the entire thread before choosing a poll option. Poll will run for 7 days (give or take) and the results will win out and become the rule. Users have the ability to change their vote. https://vgcollect.com/forum/index.php/topic,8361.0.html

This poll is specifically to determine whether pack-in games from games or game packs are allowed to have individual or loose media entries in the appropriate games category. Currently pack-in games from consoles or accessory packs are allowed separate entries in the relevant games category which also includes loose media versions where no game packaging is included AND those releases are different, unique or have some variation that is not present in a standalone release of that game.

Examples
1. Individually packaged pack-in games from game packs
Dead or Alive Ultimate (Xbox)
main set: https://vgcollect.com/item/214
DOA1: https://vgcollect.com/item/43007
DOA2: https://vgcollect.com/item/32193

Sled Storm / The Need for Speed III / NASCAR Rumble - Collector's Edition (PlayStation)

Sled Storm: https://vgcollect.com/item/28891
NFS III: https://vgcollect.com/item/77625
NASCAR Rumble: https://vgcollect.com/item/77626

2. Loose pack-in games from games
Bayonetta 2 (Bonus Bayonetta Game Included) (Wii U)
Primary release includes 2 discs: Bayonetta 2 and Bayonetta https://vgcollect.com/item/33978
There is no additional entry for Bayonetta 2.
There is an entry for the Bayonetta disc: https://vgcollect.com/item/80602

3. Loose pack-in games from game packs
Half-Life: Platinum Collection (PC)
Main pack: https://vgcollect.com/item/8440
Includes 4 individual discs.
Other examples:
- cassette game multi-packs for micros like C64 or Amstrad CPC
- that CE that has all of the Final Fantasy games on separate discs (I think it is Final Fantasy but I can't find it now)
- Game releases that have an additional DLC disc

The choices are as follows:

Method 1: Do not allow pack-in games from games or game packs
The simplest method, where the entries for a game release or a game pack are considered complete, and additional entries are not created for add-in games or the individual games of a multi-game pack. The user would leverage the notes section when adding an item to thier collection to indicate the completeness.
Implications using the Examples
- The main Dead or Alive Ultimate entry would be allowed, but the two individual game entries would be deleted.
- The PlayStation CE entry would be allowed, but the three individual game entries would be deleted.
- The Bayonetta 2 entry would be allowed, but the loose Bayonetta disc entry would be deleted.
- The Half-Life entry would be allowed, but the 4 loose discs would not be allowed separate entries.

Method 2: Only allow pack-in games from games or game packs if the game has its own packaging
This option would allow for the pack-in games to have entries created that have separate packaging within another game or game pack would be allowed an entry, but a game without separate packaging would not. Same as above regarding notes section.
Implications using the Examples
- The main Dead or Alive Ultimate entry and the two individual game entries would be allowed.
- The PlayStation CE entry and the three individual game entries would be allowed.
- The Bayonetta 2 entry would be allowed, but the Bayonetta loose disc entry would be deleted.
- The Half-Life entry would be allowed, but the 4 loose discs would not be allowed separate entries.

Method 3: Allow all pack-in games from games or game packs
Would allow for separate entries for all pack-in games from games or game packs, whether or not they have separate packaging.  This would allow for loose game discs, carts or cassettes to have a separate entry outside of the game pack. A downside to this option is that it would produce additional clutter into game categories, especially in any computer category. It would also produce "dupes" concerning game multi-packs such as the Half-Life example or in general collection packs, or as noted in the below Final Fantasy example, or those PC Game budget releases that can have up to 20 different game CDs in them.
Implications using the Examples
- The main Dead or Alive Ultimate entry and the two individual game entries would be allowed. Loose disc entries would not be allowed.
- The PlayStation CE entry and the three individual game entries would be allowed. Loose disc entries would not be allowed.
- The Bayonetta 2 entry and the loose Bayonetta disc entries would be allowed. The Bayonetta 2 disc would not get a separate entry.
- The Half-Life entry and the four loose discs would be allowed separate entries.
- Both discs from Final Fantasy Chronicles would be allowed separate loose disc entries.

NOTE: None of these options would allow for loose or individually packaged stand-alone games from within regular packaging (such as an edition box) to have a separate entry. This is only to be regarding instances where more than 1 game exists within a single package.

Here is the promised thread, to find out how many items you have created. Note that we can only see how many items you have created that currently exist. Items you have made on error or were merged or deleted in the past are not known. The figures listed are all-time and not just in the past year.

We can also find what the first item you made is (or oldest existing item you created in case your first is no longer present)

Video Game Database Discussion / Style Discussion: Pack-in games from games
« on: December 04, 2020, 11:31:57 am »
Poll is Live: https://vgcollect.com/forum/index.php/topic,11218.new.html
Please continue discussion that thread.

This topic is to discuss the options for an upcoming Style Guide poll relating to how we should handle pack-in games within games. Currently, there is a loose understanding that they should be treated the same as pack-in games from accessories or hardware, but this is not in the Style Guide or Advanced Guide.

Pack-in games with accessories or hardware are allowed separate entries in the appropriate games category if the pack-in item is unique. This is most evident in the case of NFR media or games in a packaging that was only available with that particular item but not sold separately. It is also applied in the case of computer games that were sold with a computer, video card or sound card.

Pack-in games with games come in two varieties. The first is the "collection" where a outer packaging contains multiple game cases. These entries are currently allowed to have an entry for the main set, as well as separate entries for the individual releases.

Examples:
Sled Storm / The Need for Speed III / NASCAR Rumble - Collector's Edition (PlayStation)
main set: https://vgcollect.com/item/182361
Sled Storm: https://vgcollect.com/item/28891
NFS III: https://vgcollect.com/item/77625
NASCAR Rumble: https://vgcollect.com/item/77626

Dead or Alive Ultimate (Xbox)
main set: https://vgcollect.com/item/214
DOA1: https://vgcollect.com/item/43007
DOA2: https://vgcollect.com/item/32193

The second type is the individual media that had a unique release as a pack-in with a game. This is the situation that is not explicitly covered by the Style Guide.
Final Fantasy Chronicles for PlayStation: https://vgcollect.com/item/6572
Includes 2 discs: Final Fantasy IV and Chrono Trigger.
There is no additional entry for Final Fantasy IV.
There is an entry for the Chrono Trigger disc: https://vgcollect.com/item/125450

Bayonetta 2 (Bonus Bayonetta Game Included) for Wii U: https://vgcollect.com/item/33978
Includes 2 discs: Bayonetta 2 and Bayonetta.
There is no additional entry for Bayonetta 2.
There is an entry for the Bayonetta disc: https://vgcollect.com/item/80602

If we were to allow individual loose releases of unique game releases that were contained within a game release, these would be the following implications:
- The Final Fantasy IV disc in the example above would have a loose entry.
- Each of the individual discs from within Half-Life Platinum Collection would be allowed separate entries.

If we do not allow the separate entries, then users will have to use the notes section when adding an item to their collection to track its completeness. Then the individual media entries would be removed from the db.

More implications will be added as more examples are given.
Please list further examples where these types of games within games exist, and you can also post your opinion on whether games from games should be allowed separate entries.

Poll to come following some discussion.

Preliminary poll options:
1. Do not allow pack-in games from games or game packs
2. Allow pack-in games from games or game packs
3. Only allow pack-in games from games or game packs if the game has its own packaging

Hardware and Tech / Which consoles would be good for a SD Widescreen TV?
« on: November 30, 2020, 11:32:46 am »
I've finally found a decent standard widescreen TV. Unfortunately it is not an HD CRT, as I've not had any good luck finding one of those that isn't damaged in some way. It is an flat panel and uses a computer resolution of 1366x768. It works for its primary purpose, which is to watch widescreen VHS tapes without using a pillbox, meaning the video extends to the full display.

It is taking the place of the 4:3 CRT TV which I had the Saturns connected to and that setup will have to get moved to a different place. And it got me to think about what consoles will natively support the new widescreen TV without the use of hacks. I do not want to use any systems or games that will put a 4:3 image onto the screen or use horizontal stretching. So basically just SD (Standard Definition) widescreen content only, such as widescreen VHS does.

I know that the Dreamcast is out because those required edited ISOs. I thought about the PS2 since it does have a widescreen option in the menu. I think that anything that supports Full HD such as the PS3 is out of this discussion, since I have actual HD TVs to connect those systems to.

The TV has inputs for Composite, S-Video, Component and DVI. There is probably an RF connection also. This is an NTSC set in the US.
