General / Re: Do ESRB Ratings Need to Change Just a Bit?

It probably would be easier, in the US at least, if the ESRB had used the same rating values as movies do.

General / German USK labelling question
« on: June 10, 2016, 11:17:08 am »
While doing my research on Sega Superstars Tennis, I found that in Germany there are at least 5 different USK labels. The first two (small and large) appear to be legit cover variations, but the label versions make me wonder. Where do these labels come from? Are they applied during manufacturing or is it something that an individual store does? If anyone from Germany (or whatever) can shed some light on these labels, it will be helpful.

After starting to go through Sega Superstars Tennis today, I noticed that the DS version is E but all the other ones are E-10+.
http://esrb.org/ratings/search.aspx?from=home&titleOrPublisher=sega%20superstars%20tennis

The ratings appear to suggest that the DS game does not have the mild blood or mild suggestive themes of the other releases. Is this actually a thing?
Also what is the difference between mild cartoon violence and mild fantasy violence?

« on: June 07, 2016, 06:52:34 pm »
As you can see all the duplicates have been created by the same person one after another including the 'Series' word in the title. What do you prefer for the database ? With or without 'Series' ? BTW I've created a new entry for the Vol. 10 that was missing and there are few others to do yet.

And there's also the original 'Sega Ages' collection on Sega Saturn. In the database, games are not always listed with 'Sega Ages:'. Is it OK if I edit the titles ? (I have one among them to add to my collection).

Questions about naming Japanese games should be asked here:

Guitar Hero: World Tour (X360) [NA]
Original: http://vgcollect.com/item/4809

One of these has a dual language ESRB rating on the front, while the other doesn't. Should we merge the two or designate on as CA and the other as US?

Artwork fixed on original. Dupe merged (ownership reasons).

Toh Shin Den S
http://vgcollect.com/item/42171

I have already found online, various wikia sources, saying that this is the name in Japan. Can either of you see if the cover artwork is actually implying the name is to be spaced out like this instead of being rendered as Toshinden like the rest of the titles in this series?

Video Game Database Discussion / Re: Recent Additions to Database
« on: June 03, 2016, 06:36:42 pm »
I thought it was odd that this wasn't added yet, so I hope it wasn't already there under a different title. But I did just add this one for Dreamcast because I couldn't find it:

http://vgcollect.com/item/105642

It was in the db already. It got processed as a dupe:

I dunno if these really count as Listing Errors but

http://vgcollect.com/helmut822016/magazine

The punctuation fluctuation makes my OCD go ballistic.  :o

Many types of items have no current title standardization. It is not a listing error per-se. Someone will eventually have to take the time to go through and fix all those titles up for magazines.

Do we want to extend the rules for foreign language titles for box text as well? If someone wanted to add the box text for a French game, it would just be a copy of the French that's on the back of the box, or would it be translated?

Box text should only be in the Latin language. Do not put in the non Latin symbol language in for box text. So for a game of that type (Japanese, what-have-you) it would only be English or other type words.

Definately not do translations of box text on foreign releases. It should be how it is shown on the package, IF you decide to put that in. In my usual db work, I often skip box text because I am more focused on having the entries in the db. If you see how many things I add on a weekly basis, you will understand. BUT sometimes I may put in partial text, such as the tagline that appears on the back rather than the whole thing. It really depends on my mood. ;)

EDIT: Oh I put your direct link into the first post.

That will work out. There are a LOT of Russian game releases that are hard to find online. Even as an example, Nintendo's Russian website has some pictures of their RU releases on it (found on Google Images) but if I try to visit the site it says blocked in my country. I can sometimes find Russian games on Ebay.co.uk (set to Worldwide, Russia doesn't show up if you pick EU only) which is typically how I find them to exist.

If you or anyone wants to fix titles for those (You can tell I didn't even try lol) feel free. You can just search for [RU] on the db to find them.

Video Game Database Discussion / Re: Listing Errors 2016

Spine cards are usually quite important for those who collect Japanese CDs (not just games, but music CDs are this way too) so yes the Spine card should be there if we can get it. But it is also understandable that sometimes we cannot find a good picture of a game with the spine card in, or we may have games without them (I know I certainly do).

I would say the appropriate image types would go in this priority:
1. Image of front including spine card. This is how a sealed game would look.
2. Image of front including full jewel case if the plastic jewel case inlay is *not* plain black plastic (or the standard release container)
3. Image of the front insert/manual

The above is true for most game releases including things like PS2, Nintendo 3DS or whatever. We would want a full front shot for PS2 games that did not come in the black case (blue EU releases, red Greatest Hits, etc), Nintendo 3DS had some games that came in a red case, etc. Or Dreamcast games that were released under the All-Stars imprint where the manuals are the same as the normal release.

Now for identification purposes, many people are not aware there are different versions of a game, or a person may think we have the wrong picture if they do not have or know what the spine card is for. It may be worth noting on the Virtua Fighter Kids item Description field that the jewel case has a clear inlay and it says Virtua Fighter Kids in the insert which is viewable on the front edge. Toshinden S has the black inlay, which is common and doesn't need to be noted.

Regarding the back cover image, the pictures you have been uploading are what the back cover were to look like if it was removed from the jewel case and flattened. It shows the edge parts. This is fine for an entry where no picture exists, but if one already exists (and is correct) it should not be replaced with one showing the edges. I said "spine" to mean the portions of the physical back cover that appears on the spines of the jewel case, not the spine-card itself.

PS: for anyone reading these posts and wonder about a spine card. In Japan, a piece of printed paper is put onto the edges of a CD sold at retail containing the product name, sometimes the price and usually the barcode. This is why you find a lot of Japanese CD games not having a barcode on the back, because it would have been on the spine-card. For collector's purposes, the spine may or may not have been glued onto the jewel case at manufacture, so if a new item is removed from shrink-wrap, the spine card may also fall away. It is easy to be damaged or lost, which is why you will find CD releases with a spine card to often be sold or worth more than ones without. Spine-cards were also used on some Japanese LaserDiscs and perhaps other media types as well.

Video Game Database Discussion / Re: Listing Errors 2016

I saw your reply yesterday, thank you for explaining to me. I'll remember that.

I have one more question cos I tried to update 2 front covers that got rejected :

Toh Shin Den S http://vgcollect.com/item/42171 the cover has a spine card so I wanted to edit with a 798x798 .jpg scan 266ko (without spine)
Virtua Fighter Kids http://vgcollect.com/item/19253 the cover is the whole jewel case, I thought it would be better with a 1396x1396 .jpg 880ko scan (without spine again)

Those two are a case, a judgement call. Some times it would be accepted, sometimes not. Here is the reason.

First, the image size you pick gets shrunk by the website. So 200x200 is the maximum size. Admins can compare the 2 images (old and new) in the small size and if there is little or no difference, it can be rejected. Sometimes people will try to put in new image that is just bigger and is exactly the same afterwards. So the original file size doesn't matter in the end.

In the 2 examples posted Toshinden S the image you chose to upload show less of the front than the existing ones. It is fine to have a photo with the spine card showing. This is part of the original package and should be in the image we use.

Virtua Fighter Kids front includes the spine part of the jewel case. You can see that it is clear and it says the game name in there. It is important for this to be visible in the front image. The same is true for US Dreamcast games, where 2 different versions cannot be determined by the manual, but what the jewel case edge has on it. Full front image is better to keep in this case of Virtua Fighter Kids rather than just what the manual/jewel case insert looks like.
