why did this topic seem to get heated all of a sudden? all I said is that I love sports games, didn't say I was going to hog them or make a fortune off them

there's plenty of enjoyment, from the retro ones like @sworddude said and there is plenty of them for collectors alike thay can also make great party games as well

No one is being heated, I am just speaking frankly regarding the availability and desirability of those games.  And, since this topic is about rare games, it’s pertinent.

There usually are a few rare sports games though. I don't know how, but every console has that odd soccer game worth a small fortune because they didn't print many.

Oh, for sure!  Just look at Hello Kitty Racers or whatever.  My post prior to the quoted one here says that it is “by and large” the case, but there will always be that one or two.

Finished game #2 Assassin's Creed Origins, which is definitely the most polished AC game I've played yet.  It evolved the series in a good direction, smoothing out gameplay, building a great open world, and it has a generally good story.

A few problems I ran into though: issues with contextual commands.  Several times that my assassination didn't take and I got stuck in combat, or I tried to mount my horse and picked up a corpse, etc.  And while the story is very engaging it goes on way too long.  There were no less than 4 different times that I thought the game was over, and then found out there are more quests, or more cut scenes.  It really played hell with the pacing of the back third of the game.

I mean like 99%?  You generally have to purchase any part of a game to play it.

Expansions and DLC are no more a “paywall” than purchasing the base game in the first place.

It is a paywall it can literally multiply the costs of the base game for a fraction of the content. rarely is dlc actually worth it as a result.

Also dlc inflates the pricy pretty fast when you wait for cheaper sony games, instead of spending 60$ right away. Dlc doesnt drop as fast in price as them games do.

That's not what a paywall is.  That is inflation of cost.  A paywall is locked content behind a paid gate - which applies to literally every game except f2p.

Now, if the question is “How much content is behind DLC or Season Passes?” - which really seems to be what is being asked.  I’d say around 20-30%.

Edited for clarity.

inflation of costs you say. games with over 200$ of dlc or even surpassing base game cost of 60$ alone that's not just some small inflation in price that's not normal.
Never said it was.

Quote
Also if you read the topic title. it says how much of a videogame is locked behind a paywall.

meaning that if somebody already paid the game and owns it or if somebody was wondering how much is locked behind dlc or micro transactions when you would buy the base game. if your playing the game at home how much content is blocked if your not going to draw that wallet. that's a paywall for people who already have the game. now if the title was how much the price is of a game for all of it's content. now than i would agree with you. but clearly it says how much content inside a modern game is paywalled meaning that you can ignore the base price since it's about when you already have the game ready to be played. see it like this way even if they would give some modern games for free that dlc is paywalled.

I did read the title, which is exactly why I'm pointing out, once again, that's not what a paywall is.  If having to pay for something means that it is stuck behind a paywall - then prety much every game that we talk about on this site is behind one.

Quote
heck you could even put a different context. say you got the game for free as a gift that dlc would paywalls you. your literally playing the game and content is paywalled while being in the game you need to draw your wallet for that content.

This example is the closest to being a legitimate paywall.  You are playing the game for free, but someone, somewhere still had to pay for the game first.  You may be stuck behind the "paywall" but the initial content still had to pass through one to get to you.

Quote
that didnt happen in the past. dlc is a paywall since in the past you where done after paying for the base game. dlc and micro transactions where usually just content that you would unlock by playing the game instead of opening your wallet. dlc is absolutely a paywall

This is just wistful nostalgia, expansion packs have been around since at least the early 90s (and, according to Wikipedia, the 80s).  Just because DLC and expansions are far more prevalent now does not mean that it is a new phenomena.

Anyways, I'm finished with the pedantry.  Like I said, according to the body of the first post, it seems like the question is "How much additional content is behind a paywall?" not the posed question of "How much content do they lock behind a paywall these days?".

Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems like most of them are just pop culture tie-ins, and not really unique varieties of cereal. So most of them probably still exist, only by a different name.

Precisely.  And for that reason the only real answer is Nut N Honey Crunch.

Probably my rarest one would be a sports title, nowadays since people often throw away sports games that are retro maybe NBA Courtside 2 for the Nintendo 64? or.

I have a strange feeling about some of my sports games, even though I currently can't, find out any I have that go for a lot of money today, I can see them becoming rare and obscure in the near future

Since sports video game always end up in the bargain bin I would think companies would eventually stop making them.

[...]

Wishful thinking, quite honestly. If you have NBA Elite 11, NCAA College Basketball 2K3, or maybe NCAA Football 2014, then sure.

Quite frankly, though, sports games, in the capacity that you're inferring, will never, if ever, become a rarity. They're hardly unique, if I'm being honest.

to me? my sports games mean something to me. I don't plan on selling any of them either. Another mans trash is another mans treasure. And for some reason, maybe I'm crazy I like having sports games along with other games in my collection .

just like I have almost a full set of EA Sports Golf games across 4 console prints as well as some of the less known golf video games

lol I mean look at most of the sports games in the databace here almost nobody has them but everyone has other games

That’s because most of the people in this site don’t care about sports games.  By and large they are not collector’s items, so people on a site dedicated to collecting will not be interested.

It’s great that the games mean something to you, but that sentimental value adds nothing to the availability of the game.

Someone said MegaMan X2 is rare? well I have a newer version of it for the PS2, and you can get all the MegaMan X games on the '

"Megaman X Collection"
now for $12 or more

I didn’t say it was rare, I said it was likely one of the rarest games *I* own, after explicitly stating that I don’t own anything particularly rare.

And yes, I am well aware of the various X Collections that exist.  I own a couple of them.  But the original X2 cart for SNES which is valued around $80-100 (which has dropped from the $125 or so it was a couple of years ago).

I don't really have anything super-rare, so if I had to guess I'd say its one of my Virtual Boy games, since I have everything for the console except for Jack Bros..

Other notables are Mega Man X2, Fire Emblem Fates - Special Edition, Cave Story with 3D slipcover.

The number of 3-4 year old annual sports games I see for$10+ on Facebook is embarrassing.
