I'm pretty sure it was less popular some time ago the franchise as a whole, I remember selling a strategy guide of one of the dark souls for ps3 games for close to a 100$ excuding high international shipping costs wich was kinda insane especially for a strategy guide. But thanks to the popualrity it has been reprinted and dropped down to 20 - 30ish since it is pretty easy to find on ebay nowadays. I really wonder if people actually used the guide or bought it more as a collectors piece considering it's price when the dark souls series was less popular than it is today.

When the first Dark Souls came out it wasn't a huge hit.  It found some critical success, but it found its audience (like most RPGs, really).  It was obviously successful enough to get a sequel, but it wasn't until Bloodborne came out that the general gaming public at large became aware.  It gave a retroactive boost to the previous games in series, and the Scholar of the First Sin version of part II hit the new gen of consoles around the same time.

This is when stuff really blew up.  BB was a huge hit, but a console exclusive, so when the next game from the same team wasn't an exclusive, the hype train took over with Part III.

So yeah, in general, I imagine that stuff was just less widely available back around 2012-2014, and the popularity explosive cause a ton of stuff going back to the printers.

I won my last item on eBay this morning, although I accidentally overpaid.  I meant to enter a max bid of $7 and put in $77!  Luckily it only went over by $3, which I’m cool with, I was trying to lowball / snipe anyway LOL

My dream arcade cabinet would easily be a 6 players X-Men machine.
It is amazing!

*DROOLS*
Ah, the hours I spent playing that monster cabinet. I usually avoided playing as Dazzler or Cyclops because their viewing angles sucked ;)
I had a friend who had one in his garage.  That was a great July 4th party.

He ended up moving and sold it to another friend.  Last I heard was that it need work done on one of the monitors.

I’d stab someone for one of those in good shape. I love it.

General / Where do you get your games?
« on: November 09, 2018, 09:03:50 am »
As collectors, I imagine that most of us would get our games on the secondary market, but I also know that the main secondary market outlet - GameStop - doesn't have the best reputation (at least in the US).  So, the subject question stands - where do you get your games?

On the first run market I was a huge proponent of the Best Buy's Gamer's Club unlocked, where I save a ton of money, and earned a lot of points, but since BB ended the program and my membership expired this year I have really backed off - even though I placed a few extra pre-orders prior to the expiration to get the bonus points and discounts.

In general, however, I don't buy a ton of new games on release day.  I tend to wait on sales, in which case the outlet doesn't matter for me, or I find warehouse / open box outlet stores.  There is a local chain called Bargain Hunt that I was getting lots of my new games from earlier this year / last year, but ever since they changed how often they do markdowns it has not been as beneficial, but I still occasionally find something.

That brings us to the secondary market.  Most of my collection has actually been supplemented from two major sources - local auctions, where finds are becoming more and more rare, and Facebook Marketplace, where people now think that any game older than 10 years is worth $20 automatically.  That's not to say finds can't be had, you just have to work harder and be more vigilant.

There is a giant used media warehouse in Nashville called McKay's that I visit on a semi-regular basis, that will occasionally have some good deals, but the best part about it is the trade-in credit.  I've not actually paid a single dollar to them in years.  I found a woman selling hundreds of CDs (and a copy of Street Fighter II!) about two years ago that I paid $20 for.  I went through the entire collection, ripped the albums I wanted to keep, kept the ones I really wanted to keep and then ended up with about $200 in store credit that I have been cycling through with different DVD, CD and game upgrades over the past couple of years.  My last visit was the first time since that purchase that I actually spent more credit than I earned on the trip.  The prices here have been creeping up slowly the past few years, however.

There's a small comic shop chain called Great Escape near McKay's, the focus is more on collectibles, but they do have a few games and the like.  Anything that McKay's doesn't take in trade, they will, and their prices are generally better if they happen to have the same thing.

And of course there are the old stalwarts, yard sales, flea markets, Goodwill.  Inconsistent, but they can often be the source of the flat out best deals.  My last yard sale deal was a PS2, Wii and 4 or 5 Wii games for $15.  And I got a random great haul of 360 games at a Goodwill about 2 months ago.

This movie seems to get a lot of shit, not entirely unfairly, but I think this is totally a watchable action movie.  The writing isn't that great, it's not really the story anyone wanted with us finally getting a movie set during the war, it's stupidly PG-13 (I'm still dumbfounded that T3 is actually R-rated) but what we got isn't that bad.  I'd watch this any day over T3 and probably Genisys, which I'll be getting to soon.

I saw this in theatres and I had the same reaction. I was really surprised everyone I spoke with absolutely hated this movie. The movie was no masterpiece, but it was a decent action flick.

I personally saw it in theaters and hated it.  Everyone I was with hated it.  It's bland, generally derivative, unimaginative, Christian Bale is actually kind of terrible in it.  This was third movie in about 4-5 months where Sam Worthington's character's defining trait was "having a strong heart".  The only memorable thing I can thing of from the film is the highway chase sequence.  I've not seen Genisys yet, but I have a feeling this one will look better in hindsight.

Not a big fan of 3 either, but at least the action sequences there are all pretty top notch.

I finished Castlevania Season 2 last night.  It was great.  Episode 7 cemented it as easily the greatest video game adaptation of all time.

Far Cry 4 - Limited Edition XB1 [NA]

https://vgcollect.com/item/72540 - this one was listed as the standard edition until I tried to edit the box art to reflect that, then it was rejected and changed to the Limited Edition.

One of these should probably be the standard edition, as there is still not a listing for that version.

My edit was rejected - this item has incorrect box art.  This is the art for the variant that includes the Mammoth Missions (https://vgcollect.com/item/152631).  The box art should not include the little logo on the right hand side, as below.

Took a small pilgrimage to to the other side of Nashville to the big used media warehouse here.  Didn't look as long as I wanted to, but I did pick up a few things at some decent prices with more store credit.

Steel Diver (3DS)

and then for XB1

Dead Rising 3
Far Cry 4
Far Cry: Primal (Mammoth Missions)

I wish I didn't have most of these already or I'd be on this in a hot second.

The PC bundle is pretty good right now, too.

$1 gets you Shadow of Mordor AND Arkham Origins.

The end of my October Movie marathon was the following two movies:

Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich
Not as good as I was hoping, based on the trailer, but still probably the best Puppet Master film.  It's a complete reboot, so don't expect to know where is going to be going on when you start.  There's one death that I think was legitimately going to far, and the tone is all over the place.  It's worth a look, but don't expect too much out of it.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 Live: The Brain
The MST3K live show was here in Nashville on Halloween night.  Killer material the whole way through, and the movie itself was a classic disaster of Canadian production.  The brain itself its actually kind of a neat design?  Still, had a great time.

Last night I finished my rewatch of the entire Babylon 5 series proper.  I've still got some of the spin-off material to still get through, but the main series is over, and dammit if I don't still love it, flaws and all.

Gotta be the dumbest pose for any amiibo figure. lol

If this and the last Smash Direct were switched I doubt we’d be seeing too many complaints.  This was just pretty underwhelming to be the last push before launch.

The amount of horseback riding is starting to hit that point of "Boy, I wish I could fast travel".  This could start to push me to just ignore side activities more and try to focus on just the story stuff to get through to the end, because when you want to go somewhere specific and you know it'll take you 5 to 10 minutes of riding, if not more, it can really put a damper on your energy for wanting to do it.  There are wagons between the towns, but its still a matter of convenience.  I can put up with some tediousness, but when you are spending hours on horseback, the beautiful scenery and pitstops for helping or killing someone only do so much to keep you entertained after awhile.

Game mechanic I found out about yesterday morning that has really helped me out:

Set a waypoint, get your horse to cantor, and then activate cinematic view.  The horse will follow the waypoint to the end.  It's not a perfect solution, as you can get ambushed, and the horse may (rarely so far) lose the path - and you still actually have to wait, but you don't have to manually steer.  I've been using it as my snack and bathroom break time.

Tiny spoilers:
You can unlock fast travel at your camp.  But, it is only from your camp.

I'm hopeful they are gonna do another Castelvania Legacy Collection bundle for the NES/SNES ones.  I'd like to play more of them before Bloodstained.

The NES and SNES Classics are good ways to get 1,2 and 4 along with some other extra goodies if you are interested in that sort of thing.

Like so many others, my answer is probably Symphony of the Night.  I just played it for the first time last year, and I was just straight up blown away.  And that is someone who loves the original game - and all the other classic style ones, really.

Just bought my first item!! shopping is always fun!
I bought two, and had to return one already!  They didn't send me the edition that was listed on their site.  If I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it right.  I was quite upset cause I thought I nailed it on Day One. -_-

Depending on when I wouldn't mind being part of the unboxing either.
