Video Showcase / Re: For You Star Trek Fans
« on: October 01, 2018, 10:18:06 am »
Beginning this afternoon I plan on starting a weekly stream where I play through several Star Trek games, starting with the PC version of Starfleet Academy, which has some pretty cool FMV stuff.

Every Monday from 1pm - 3pm CST the Shaun Trek will be voyaging through these classic Star Trek games, boldy going where few (no?) streamers have gone before.

It's definitely the most consistent of the new films, mostly because it's not taking many risks, you can kinda tell how the story will mostly go except for a few parts, but it's fun.  I know this movie got caught up in the Last Jedi backlash, abit unfairly, but it's a pretty good Star Wars film because you get whats on the tin...A Star Wars Story.  It's a good watch.
That's how I feel about it.  It's nothing special, but it is a fun pretty consistent romp.  I found some of the fanservice bits a little pandering (or a lot pandering - how he gets his name, and the nickname for Chewie bit), but overall I had a lot of fun with it, and I would also consider it #2 of the new films, though it sounds like the rest of my ranking would be different than yours

If you have a steelbook video game or blu ray, is it fire resistant?

Considering that the average house fire is only a slim 1100 degrees fahrenheit, the chances are pretty high of a steelbook surving the accident if it would actually be made out of steel to get to that sweet 1500 fahrenheit melting point.

Well, I mean that is if you are only talking about house fires.  Seether's question is a bit more generic than that.  Jet fuel can't melt steel beams, but I bet it can melt steelbooks.

You would get a payout equal to the rough value of your collection.  One of the major reasons I catalogued my collection here is so that I do have a full list of what I own in case something does ever happen.  And I use FilmAF for my DVD / Blu collection.

The plight of the materialistic.
A) Fuck you, man.  Try plight of the person whose house burned down.

B) When I bought my home and got insurance I specifically asked about my games.  I was told that the general policy covered them, but everyone should definitely double check your policies.  Or if you don’t have insurance look into it!  It could save your from financial ruin.

It seems like their might be life though.  I just really hope some huge company buys out telltale's IPs and pays to get the staff back and takes a swing at it.  The games garner interest.  It's just when you have PewDiePie spoling your entire game in front of millions.  Especially a game so story based it makes it a waste to even buy it.  Combine that with the game being only 20 instead of 40 or 60.   Then paying out the wazoo to purchase the rights to the name sakes of walking dead, batman, minecraft.  I can imagine how costly it was.

You hit the nail on the head after kind of contradicting yourself.  Telltale doesn't actually own any IPs to sell off.  They spent a ton of money to license these games from some pretty heavy hitters.  A second company would have to want to want to make the same kind of games, hire people to make them and then negotiate and pay a third party for a company for an IP for a series of games that was so unprofitable that the previous studio shut down.  There's a slim chance of it happening while Telltale is still open and has the licenses, but there is a snowball's chance in hell of it happening after they close.

I think another big money sink was the size of the company - almost 300 people to write and code story based games that have been running on the same engine for nigh on 10 years?  That's a lot of people.  You see much other companies putting out story based games on similar engines with much smaller dev teams.

I’m really tempted even if it is just to get Rondo which I have never played.

Most recently, the souls series had this affect on me. Everything about this series just pulled me in - Design, Combat, Lore, some of the environments are just breathtaking.

Enemy design is top notch, plus the soundtrack really gets under your skin during tense boss fights. All tied together with a steep learning curve.

I agree with this wholeheartedly.  They didn’t make other games obsolete, per se, but the Soulsborne games really reignited my passion for gaming in a way I didn’t expect.  They are beautiful, dense, impeccably designed, and fun.

Bloodborne is truly the PS4 killer app to me.  It and the Souls trilogy is modern game design practically perfected.  They blew me away in a manner that hadn’t happened since I first realized the scale of WoW.

I finished Sonic Mania and made a very important discovery: I don’t like Sonic games.  Even the old school ones.  The platforming is too slick and imprecise and while the levels look cool to speed through they are relatively unintuitive.  And I wanted to love it.

The Predator
Yeah, it was dumb as a sack of rocks, but I still generally enjoyed it.  The first half was actually pretty good, but the last third or so was a messy rush job.  The fate of at least one character still has me going "What the hell happened?!".  Definitely Shane Black's worst script, and the worst mainline Predator film - though its definitely better that AvP:R and probably better - at least more enjoyable - than AvP.

Jackie Brown
Easily QT's most low key movie - especially in the final resolution.  Great performances and soundtrack choices all around.  Makes me wish QT did a little bit more with regards to adapting other people's work, because Elmore Leonard was one of the greats in modern crime fiction.

Ash vs. Evil Dead - Season 3
And it's finally over - again.  Who would have thought 20 years ago that there would been an Evil Dead sequel series- and that it would be GOOD?  There were missteps along the way, like the hastily rewritten season 2 finale and shortchanging some characters at the end, but it was gory good fun from beginning to end.  Godspeed Ashley J. Williams.

Babylon 5: In the Beginning / Babylon 5: The Gathering
I watched the prequel movie and the pilot movie to gear up for a rewatch of Babylon 5.  It may not be as known as some other series, but it is one of my absolutely favorites - even if some aspects haven't aged great.  I was actually pretty shocked at how well The Gathering establishes the overall tone of the show, despite there being some major changes in cast and production choices in the year between it and the first episode proper.

Yeah... so I had a busy weekend.
