General / Re: Remasters and Ports - A Good Thing?
« on: October 03, 2021, 05:04:06 pm »
I grew up in the stone age of console gaming and it's easy to say that ports of games have come a LONG way. Back then, we had to make due with the hilariously horrible port of Pac-Man on the 2600. The port of Donkey Kong on the Colecovision was pretty accurate but we never had one of those growing up and it wouldn't be until the NES till we got to play a somewhat accurate port. Even then, that system it had it's own port failings like Kung Fu.  :P

Nowadays there's a HUGE amount of ports and remasters of older games and I couldn't be happier. The only frustration is that there are so many that it's sometimes hard to keep up with/afford them all!  >:(

To be fair, I'm more into the compilations of older titles or updates/remakes. I just picked up a few Switch games in the last couple of weeks, Space Invaders Forever and Prinny Presents V1 which has Soul Nomad/Phantom Brave on it. The Space Invaders is a remake with some updated gameplay as well as a port of SE Extreme that was on DS. The games on the Prinny Presents I have on the PS2 already but what's nice about those is I don't have to unearth them from a tub or hook up my PS2 to play them if I wanted.

Anymore, I'm fully resigned to the idea that a killer title on the current gen is guaranteed a HD port on the next gen system. I was absolutely not surprised to see PS5 versions of Ghosts of Tsushima and Death Stranding. They've been doing these for years now so I don't see the trend ever stopping. I don't follow those as closely though. Now if they ever make a Namco Museum for PS5...  :P ;D ;)

It seems like the advance collection on switch release has all of you guys on a Castlevania buying frenzy right now

I already have the GBA physical releases and I have to imagine at some point in time Konami and LRG and gonna roll out a physical release.

Finally, anyway everybody knows what to do here  :P

LOL I had the tab up to start this and got sidetracked with a game. After I was done playing, I shut down and forgot to hit send. Sorry to steal your thunder.  :P  ;D  8)

Also, obilgatory...

Off Topic / Re: The Dream Trip
« on: September 23, 2021, 04:10:39 am »
In terms of a Dream Trip where I can bend the rules of reality and do things like time travel, I'd like to be able to visit amusement parks from my personal past that are no longer around as well as visit parks around the world during different periods like the opening of Disneyland/Walt Disney World. I too would have liked to have visited places like Japan in the mid to late 90's armed with the knowledge of today so I could snap up a ton of good titles on the cheap.  :P

Without bending the rules of reality but having enough F-You money and no job to do/buy whatever I want, let's see...

One thing I would definitely like to do is make a trek to visit all 50 states. I've managed to visit 20 of the 50 so far and would love to knock out the other 30 as well as the territories like Puerto Rico and the others. If I'm doing that, I'd try and do a trip-within-a-trip by visiting every MLB park and attending a game at each one. Since I'd have the money/time, I would probably do that for every NFL, NBA, and NHL team as well.  :P

Of course if I'm visiting every state I would absolutely go to every amusement park. Six Flags, CaroWinds, and Knott's Berry Farm are ones that immediately come to mind aside from the obvious ones like Disneyland. I've never been to Universal Studios so I'd like to hit that up as well as go back and spend a LOT of time at WDW.  ;)

Outside the US, the highest ranked destinations for me would be Japan and South Korea. Japan would be for the shopping but also for the chance to visit Tokyo Disney Sea. I have relatives in South Korea and it'd be nice to actually visit the country where half my lineage comes from.  ;)

I can't think of too many other places I'd wanna go without doing a little research. I'd love to venture up to Canada (when it's warm) and visit some restaurant chains that are unique to that country like Swiss Chalet.  :P

Hopefully one of these days I can make these dream trips a reality. I just need the damn lottery to stop selling me losing tickets!  >:(  :o  ;D

General / Re: Favorite Arcade Racers
« on: September 18, 2021, 01:43:04 pm »
Sure, Resident Evil Village was good, I liked it...but game of the year material? Nah, its not like its Resident Evil 2 or anything.

But at the same time, I can't think if anything better I played, either. Damn Coronavirus pushing everything back.

Metroid: Dread come out in a couple weeks. Here's to hoping it's a contender. I eagerly look forward to it

None of those are racers buddy. I think you meant to post that here https://vgcollect.com/forum/index.php/topic,11562.0.html  :P

As for racers, the first R.C. Pro-Am was a favorite growing up. I wore out my Nes Max pad playing that game. Hard Drivin' was a favorite in the arcades along with the original OutRun and Super Monaco G.P. (the Genesis version was sooooo lacking). Virtua Racing was probably the most immersive experience if you got to play the sit down version that was made to look like a racecar. It had air bladder bags that helped simulate the feel when you turned. Multiplayer Daytona USA was a blast as well.

The first Choro Q on PS1 is probably the one racing game I spent the most time on. I can't remember where I imported it from but the game was almost entirely in Katakana so I hunkered down and used that game to help me learn that script.  :D Also need to mention I spent a LOT of time with the first Motor Toon Grand Prix. I know Polyphony got wrapped up with Gran Turismo (another one I spent a lot of time with) but I'd kill for a MTGP3 with modern graphics.

One of the last racing games I played was mentioned by Cartagia already, Horizon Chase Turbo. Not a bad game, it scratches that retro itch. Another racing game I thought I'd be all about but was rather disappointed in was Table Top Racing - Turbo Edition.

Yeah, I try to post the dates when I know them, unfortunately the Twitter feeds I get them from don't usually have that info.

Titan Quest - Anniversary Edition is free on Steam right now.  Not sure for how long.

EDIT: and Jagged Alliance 1.  Looks like they are both until like Sept. 23 or so.

Snagged. Thanks for the heads up.  :D

Through his work we were able to get things like tickets for the Atlanta Braves or the 1996 Olympics (I went to 3 Braves playoff games when they won the World Series in ‘95. Woot!)

So yes, UPS had a pretty large impact on our lives. I’ve also been conditioned to say that Fed Ex is the Devil incarnate ;)

As an Indians (soon to be The Guardians) fan I say BOO! BOOOOOOOOOOO!!  :P  >:(  :o

Don't get me wrong, that Braves team had a load of amazing talent on it with several Hall of Famers (and yes, Fred McGriff absolutely deserves to be in as well) and I don't hate the team itself but I could NOT stand the fans and their incessant tomahawk chop/wailing nonsense that they did.  >:(  I despise the Yankees but I was SO happy to see them smack the Braves around in '96 and '99.  ;D

As for the subject...USPS is the best around here followed by UPS. I don't see much in the way of FedEx or DHL. My old roommate has gotten a few dinged up FedEx packages and my only interaction with DHL was when Strictly Limited put my order on one of their boats instead of sending it airmail like I paid for. That's not on DHL at all but I still wasn't happy about it.  :P

Congrats on the new digs! Welcome to the fun of being a home owner.

Thanks!  ;D

I had a snafu with the electric where it was turned off on Tuesday. I just got a text message saying it's back on so I need to go check, turn everything off, etc. Because of that I've been staying where I have been for another week which means another week of rent owed.  :P

Also, the previous owners didn't do a repair right and it forced me to call the Water Works and have them shut off water to the house to fix a corroded pipe. The guy can't fix it till tomorrow morning so I can't stay there tonight either.  :-\

Even without the pandemic playing a role in things, the prices for certain systems would have surged regardless. You've got some people hitting that spot where they're nostalgic for the systems they grew up on, in this case the DC/PS2/Xbox/GC era, and they now possess the disposable income to pick those fondly remembered titles up...even if it comes at a premium.  :o

The other problem that's been steadily increasing is the amount of speculators/flippers/scalpers on the scene trying to dictate how the market goes and how they can best profiteer from it. I saw a post on Reddit the other day where a collector was sent a message from someone asking them to raise the price of their auction on a game because a sale at a lower value would affect the prices of all copies overall. There's NO getting those bastards out of the industry at this point though and it's mildly infuriating to see the graded scene becoming bonkers and affecting non-graded games as a result.  >:(

If anything, I expect every generation going forward to become even more nonsensical than the previous one until the hardware makers manage to successfully make digital-only the de-facto standard. We're already seeing some PS4/Switch games attaining nosebleed prices because of smaller print runs and limited availability.  :-\

Now that I've got a house, I can't collect like I used to and even when I did have more disposable income it was already a huge PITA trying to keep up. I've halfway resigned myself at this point to accepting that I won't be able to going forward though.  ;)

Oh yeah...for anyone interested, Target got restocked on the Sanrio/Animal Crossing amiibo cards. No need to hunt them down on eBay or what not and pay obscene scalper/flipper prices.  ;)

So at the end June my housemate was like "Hey, it's about time you found a place of your own" and with that I started going on the hunt for a house. I finally put the nail in the proverbial coffin on Friday and closed on my first house, a 1500 sq./ft. bi-level. Even though it's just me, the garage is packed like a sardine can with a bazillion tubs containing my game collection and a f-ton of boxes for my comics. I had my now ex-housemate, my cousin and a buddy from work helping move all that on Saturday to which I was told "There's a special place in hell for collectors like you."  ;D  :P

The upside is the housemate's wife had an aunt/uncle who were also moving and they had some older but well-maintained furniture they were parting with (for free) including a sectional couch, two recliners, and a still-in-plastic king size mattress set. That's a cool $2K in furniture I don't have to buy now.  ;)

Since the house doesn't have a true basement, it's a little smaller than where I've been staying now. My friend's house is approximately the same size at 1500 square feet but as I learned while house hunting, unfinished basements don't count toward that number so his house is actually much bigger than mine when counting the amount of basement space he has. Not the end of the world but I won't be displaying as much of my collection like I had hoped to.  :-\

At some point I'm going to have to rip all of the carpet out of the house as the previous owners were smokers. I would prefer to have that Pergo/paneled flooring or whatever it's called anyway but that's a down the road project behind a few other sweat equity things I'm going to have to tackle.  :P

I'll be honest in that I wasn't really looking forward to this whole ordeal but at least the house-hunting and dealings with banks/realtor processes are over. The mortgage payment and utilities won't break my budget but the thing I'm NOT looking forward to is maintaining the lawn/weeding.  :o That said, I'll deal with it rather than have to put up with a condo's HOA telling me I can't have certain colored curtains or charging me for maintenance fees for a tennis court/pool I'll never use.

Anywho...let the fun begin!  8)

This is literally what this site has been reduced to....

Mods, just nuke it all already....

Oh and Brittney for being way more entertaining back in her prime and also her subsequent meltdown that started in the late 2000s.

The sabbatical has ended and Marv's back with his drug-induced, nonsensical bantering posts. In Marv's defense, I'd like to congratulate Drugs for winning the War on Drugs.  :P

Being a tad bit older, my Pop Culture Rivalry growing up was between Michael Jackson and Prince. I prefer MJ's more pop-sounding stuff to Prince's music but over time I've learned to appreciate both artists for differing reasons. Of course, I'm a Bee-Gee's fan so I don't know if that invalidates my taste in music or not.  :o
