Marketplace / WTB: 20" CRT Monitor

Hey guys. I'm not looking for it right away, but I'm gonna need another 20" CRT monitor for another arcade project. Case condition isn't a big deal, but I need the screen to be in nice shape.

My sister is letting me slide on my last 2 months rent, so I don't have to worry about paying her right now. But, in trade, my next arcade project has to be one for her.

General / Newer releases and their (lack of) paperwork.

Hey all. In light of the lack of paperwork in a lot of newer games (I'm looking at you Vita, EOIV and others).  I think we are going to need to make sure we list the inserts of newer games as accurately as possible.

For example, I just cracked open my copy of Castlevania: Mirror of Fate and it has no manual, but it does have the Club Nintendo code and a Konami Core code flyer in it. From a collector standpoint,  I would want go know that a CIB copy lacks the manual, so it wouldn't lead to a fruitless search.

Thoughts?

News / End of Month Stats for February, 2013

It's March, which means it's time for stats! Now that we have a full year of stat tracking under our belt, I can start comparing with a year ago. And from the looks of things, on average February '13 was on par with February '12. We broke some more records, nothing too super exciting, or is it? I know, you can't contain your excitement, so feel free to read on. 

Users

This month, we had a few problems with spammers. So with that in mind, it makes me wonder just how accurate these numbers are. But we did add 433 new users to the site and broke the 7,000 mark! Yay!

• Total Registered Users: 7,251
• New Users: 433
• Daily Average: 15

Items

In February, we added 1,080 new items to the database and 2,193 edits were made to existing items. We managed to break 37,000 items and are now only a mere 3,000 away from the big 40!

• Total Items in Database: 37,609
• New Items: 1,080
• Daily Average: 39
• Edits: 2193
• Daily Average Edits: 78

Collections

Last month was another good month for collection numbers. 37,889 items were added to users collections, with a daily average of 1,353. Wishlists saw a 3,300 item jump and the Sell List saw a little more love. But the biggest news here, we are now tracking 400,000 items across then entire site! That is awesome! That's 80 times more than we started with!

Off Topic / USPS Tracking Not Working?

Anyone else seem to have problems with the new USPS tracking? I have a few items out, both mailing out and coming in, and I either get an error or no status whatsoever.

Modern Video Games / Xbox 360 SHMUPs?

I'm interested in compiling a list of all Known Xbox 360 Shoot 'em Up games that are playable on a North American Xbox 360. It's one of my favorite genres and would like to be able to track down as many as possible for the 360. I've listed all the games I own or know of already. But let's fill this baby out! News / End of Month Stats for January, 2013

Alrighty folks, Welcome to February! January was a pretty huge month and we kicked off 2013 with a bang. Lots of records were broken and I think you'll all be impressed too. Really I don't know what to say, it was a pretty amazing month. Here we go!

Users

This month we  broke the 6.8k mark on users with a total of 483 new members joining the site! That's the most new users we've had in a given month since I've started tracking stats and it broke the record of 434 set in February, 2012! Sweet! Welcome to all the new folks!

• Daily Average: 16

Items

But new users isn't the only record broken this month. No no, In January, we broke 36,000 items in the database too! Completely bypassing the 35k mark with 2,075 new items entered into our system! But not only that, we saw 3,304 edits to existing items in the database too, with an average of 107 edits and 67 new items added to the site daily! Sweetness.

Collections

January saw a lot of record breaking in the Collections department. With all the new users on the site, we saw a pretty big jump in Collection totals this month. We are now sitting at 365,217 items in Collections on VGCollect! And with 39,399 items added to Collections this month, that's a new all time record too! Not only that, the 4,449 items added to Wishlists and the 260 items added to the Sell List are both new records in their own right. I love seeing these totals, I makes me all happy inside and stuff, haha.

General / Continues in games?

I was just wondering if anyone else does this. On games that allow for continues, but wipe your High Score on a continue. Do you let the timer run down to 0 and start from the beginning, or do you credit feed it to the end?

When I'm playing SHMUPs I tend to only play until I lose my last life and then let it go to the high score board. Usually I won't credit feed it, unless I'm trying to play through and unlock characters if needed. But on platformers and such I'll just keep continuing until I'm through it. I'm not sure what the difference it, but I think it has something to do w/ trying to master the patterns in each level of bullet hell shooters.

Does anyone else do this? Or do you just keep hitting continue until you beat the game?

Modern Video Games / New Monolithsoft Game!

In the Nintendo Direct today, Nintendo showed off some footage for a new game from Monolithsoft. It seems to have the action bar of Xenoblade Chronicles and at the end it even draws out the stylized X. But some folks are thinking it could be either a Xenogears sequel (thanks to the X being red), or more possibly Xenoblade Chronicles 2!

Either way, it looks like I may end up with a reason to get a Wii U now.

What do you guys think/ speculate?

News / Happy 2nd Birthday VGCollect!

Hey all, did you know that today is VGCollect's 2nd Birthday!?

Yep, 2 years ago today, Matt opened up the site to the public and we started taking in new registrations with the need for special codes and such. It's been a great 2 years too and this year alone was amazing.  At the end of 2011, we had the massive database failure and lost a bunch of info, user collections and even user accounts. But we were able to bounce back after a few months following it and saw some massive growth in both user base and database content over the last year.

So thanks for everything you guys do for this site. Honestly without your help we wouldn't be here. Or we would be here, we just wouldn't have all of the awesome content listed, like we do. Happy 2nd Birthday VGCollect and here's to plenty more!

General / Too Niche?

I was doing some reading on Pandora's Tower and a few places were saying things like "it's too niche to be localized" and such. Honestly, is there really that big of a problem with niche games? I mean without niche games, we are stuck with the same old stuff over and over. And fans of said niches feel like gaming has left them behind.

I know that's how I feel with SHMUPs. They were a staple of arcade gaming and had their place in home gaming, but now it's hard to find anything that's released here for the genre. A lot of us have been left with importing, and then you can only import region free games, unless you want to go through the hassle of buying a second system or modding an exisiting one.

So really, is being a niche game really a problem?

News / End of Month Stats for December, 2012

It's January! And that means we just finished the last month in 2012, Happy New Year! It's been a really awesome year here at VGCollect and I've got all the stats for the month of December ready, and on time no less. But, that's not all. For the 1st time ever, I've been able to collect stats for an entire year and we will be showing off the total combined stats for 2012. This is kind of exciting. So, here we go, your stats for the month of December, 2012 AND the year.


Users

This month, 396 new members joined the site, bringing us up and over the 6,000 mark!

Items

In December we added a total of 1,288 new items, with 42 new items added to the database daily. Also we approved 6,496 edits to already existing items.

Collections

Collections saw a large increase this month with a total of 28,283 items added to collections, with 912 added daily. While the Wishlists saw 3,193 items added to them and the Sell List saw 82 items added to it.

Now this is exciting. This is the first year that we've been tracking stats for a full year. This means that I can show you all the full stats for the year 2012! I've added the stats for 2011 as a comparision and changed the daily averages to monthly averages. So, here we have your stats for the entire year of 2012!


Users

In 2012 we added 5,199 new users to the site which, compared to the 2011 total of 1,134, is mind blowing! Thats an average of 433 new users per month!

Items

Last year the database saw an addition of 15,518 total new items. This is slightly less than the 19,169 we had in 2011, but it is still really awesome and comes out to 1,293 new items added each month. We also saw a total of 46,572 edits to items in the database over the course of the year, with an average 3,881 each month.

Collections

Now, as with every stat update I've posted, the collection stats seem to be the most astonishing. In 2012 we saw a total of 249,289 items added to users collections! That's over 3 times more items added to collections than the 76,019 total from 2011!

Wishlists also saw a lot of love in 2012, compared to 2011. Last year, we ended with 11,554 total items added to wishlists, where in 2011 we had 6,367 items listed. And finally in 2012 we had 766 items added to the Sell List, compared to the 560 from 2011.
