Hey hey! It's my favorite Mike Tyson, he's back!

I have played Hexen probably about halfway through. It's pretty interesting, but nothing that stood out to me as astounding. Maybe I just played it too late where the appeal of Doom-likes had faded.

I just felt I should post in this thread because of... some reason. I dunno what it could be. *Shrug*

I don't think newer generations are ever going to match the mystique of the older ones no matter what happens. The lost and obscure stuff from the older generations is because of limited knowledge, information and documentation. The newer stuff will for sure lose a lot, but that is because of specific (and really crappy) practices where everything is run server side so it's hard or downright impossible to archive correctly. Something like Stadium Events on the NES, with an interesting history for it's rarity that wasn't known widely until way after is probably going to remain more interesting than a Limited Run Games style release where the express purpose is to make a collectable, or Call of Duty 164354 that is online only and basically gone in a year when the micro-transactions only make $1 billion instead of $2 billion. I really like Limited Run for it's pressing of physical media, but it just doesn't have the same effect of knowing you had to ask behind a counter for a pornographic NES game that nobody knew existed even then. I think LRG games in the long run will plateau whereas old systems (specifically in the pre-internet age) will continue to increase in demand.

All the indie stuff of this day and age will probably be preserved well most of the time. There are future problems with preservation of digital platforms like Steam down the road for sure, but it won't result in total losses of information most likely. The attitude of people is also just much different, where gaming went from a somewhat niche thing to very broad appeal. In the end, many generations later (That is being wishful, though, as I bet before then console generations will not be a thing due to some kind of horrible 'games as service' singularity) the 8th gen will probably be looked at with some kind of novelty as probably being on the tail end of physical, but I doubt it will ever even come close to even future collectors to the systems and games of the even more distant past.

I like the idea, but I am not really sold on it having the balance and charm of the original trilogy. Heck, Crash 2 was the zenith of the series and even Crash 3 suffered a significant drop-off in my opinion (WAY too many vehicle levels). That is to say nothing about the blandness of the large majority of the following Crash games. I'm not optimistic, but hey, if it's good that's a nice surprise.

Modern Video Games / Re: Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-reckoning

It's great it'll get some kind of re-release. I hope this may lead to a long thought impossible sequel at some point. It's one of the best action RPGs in my opinion with lots of content and options and I put a heck of a lot of time into it. There just aren't too many games of that style that do it right. I should play it again, as I only have once... I mean, I've played frikken Two Worlds like 5 times so I have no excuse... lol

Classic Video Games / Re: What's your Mario kart series tier list
« on: April 08, 2020, 03:50:09 pm »
I am pleasantly surprised by your list, Sworddude. It is actually similar to how I would do it with a few differences. I was certain most people where gonna do the bog standard MK8 as the top every time.

S: Double Dash
A: Mario Kart Wii, Mario Kart DS
B: Mario Kart 8
C: Super Mario Kart, Mario Kart 7, Super Circuit
D: Mario Kart 64

Double Dash is my all time favorite. I love the tracks, I love the doubles system, I love the controls.

Wii and DS are next on how much I've played them and also great in most regards. I wish snaking didn't exist in DS, but you get used to it. DS also had all those amazing mission modes, and I do really like Wii's cycles and tracks.

Mario Kart 8 is where things go down... I can't justify putting it lower because it has SO much content, but this is in the coin system being brought era... and I HATE the coin system. Mario Kart improved so much when it was removed, but now it seems like it may be back for good... god, I hope not.

Super Mario Kart is really nostalgic and it's battle system is second best, but too many improvements have been made. MK7 is a worse version of MK8. Super Circuit is in the same realm as SMK, but I have less nostalgia for it.

Mario Kart 64 is the most boring and standard of all the games in my opinion. I don't think it improved on SMK enough and I think the tracks go from boring to even poorly designed. It's ace, though, is that it has the best battle mode in the franchise. Much like reintroducing coins was bad to me, ditching the battle system of the first 2 games in most of the series is a baffling decision to me.

Classic Video Games / Re: Your top 10 Favorite Sega Genesis games
« on: February 05, 2020, 03:48:41 am »
Man, looking through I actually don't have as much fondness for the Genesis as I thought I did. Most games I played on it where multi-platform where I preferred the SNES version and where I would have trouble narrowing down my SNES list, even filling a Genesis one is kinda hard.

-Sonic 2
-Sonic 3 & Knuckles
-Sonic

Obvious choices out of the way, these are the reason I bought a Genesis (though used from Gamestop for cheap after the systems hayday) in the first place. I hold the slightly controversial ranking in which I prefer Sonic 2 over Sonic 3, though this may be because I never completed a full play-through until a few years back where I had played 1 & 2 fully as a kid.

- Gunstar Heroes

One of the few true things to hold over the SNES in playground debates. I didn't play it until later, but it's amazing in gameplay and music while being very unique. Seven Force is in my top 10 bosses ever for sure.

- Rocket Knight Adventures

Really unique gameplay gimmick and excellent music. Stands above the rest of the non-Sonic mascot platformers.

- Castlevania: Bloodlines

Stands toe-to-toe with the SNES' Castlevania offerings. Not up to 4's standard, but perhaps better than Dracula X.

- Aladdin

The SNES and Genesis version are different enough to be considered their own game. Really tight platforming.

This is really where my list proper ends. There are a lot of games I enjoyed on it as a kid (Vectorman 1 & 2, Mickey & Donald: World of Illusion, Golden Axe, etc.) but they have failed to remain as prominent in my tastes as the above games or their SNES cousins.

General / Re: Free Morrowind from Bethesda Store
« on: March 28, 2019, 08:59:11 pm »
Morrowind is, in my opinion, the best of the Elder Scrolls games. The graphics are definitely dated now, but there are texture mods available that make them more bearable.

I'll take you one further. Morrowind is my favorite game of all time. it's the perfect mix of deep RPG elements and interesting character builds from the older that the newer games lack, but with a expertly crafted and creative world and quests that the older series didn't have. And that is just in the context of Elder Scroll games, with very few notable exceptions there hasn't been an RPG close to it in probably a decade.

It's got that old school clunkyness with some of the combat mechanics, and obviously the graphics are outdated, but these things should absolutley be tolerated for the deep experience within. I personally don't give a single crap about the graphics being old, 90% of the best games ever are older than at least 5 years (and probably more like 10), but if graphics are your thing there are mod mods to upgrade as snyderec mentioned. As for some of the old-school gameplay... I can understand if some people will be put off by it, thought there are many mods to improve a lot of functions of it. Just because I love to state this controversial opinion anytime I have context to do it - Wither 3's combat system is absolute garbage and it's considered a masterpiece, and Morrowind is 10x deeper mechanically.

Morrowind is an experience and missing out on it due to it's older systems or graphics is an absolute shame, especially when it's free.

TL;DR:

General / Do you include shipping price when logging cost?
« on: March 01, 2019, 03:34:42 pm »
If you keep track of what you payed with the cost option on VGCollect, do you include shipping prices? While I was looking up the receipt for a shipped item and adding it, which is an annoying step as the email often only shows the upfront game cost, it made me think about this. I have always added the shipping price as it was involved in the purchase of the game, but I could see a case for not doing this. It could give an inaccurate measure of what you payed purely for the game or item itself, inflating the perceived value. On the other hand, I've payed hundreds and maybe even more than a thousand dollars over my tenure and to ignore that cost seems a bit dishonest.

What do you think? What's your philosophy on shipping and how it relates to the price of games?

Modern Video Games / Re: Anthem gets 6.5'd by IGN
« on: February 22, 2019, 06:44:01 am »
In a logical sense 5/10 SHOULD be an average game, but that is not how game ratings work. Even if it is just BS, game scores work more like school grading where a 7.5 is average. This is because the bigger review sites like IGN are pretty big shills, and seeing 7.5 as average is kind of the way adapting to inflated AAA scores.

For a site like IGN to give a big AAA game a 6.5 basically shows they can't just ream it, because money flows from the creators, but can't get away with ignoring the general audience reception. That speaks incredibly poorly for Anthem. It's already kneecapped by the fact it is one of the awful live service games made to milk micro-transactions through MMO-like repetitive game-play. I've heard it described many times as a worse and more buggy Destiny, and Destiny is already a game I think is pretty bad. You can see this further on meta-critic with a vast majority of super fence-sitting 70 scores for critics, with larger negative reviews from users (who aren't incentivized to not give a scathing review) at 3.1.

This is basically Fallout 76 again, an unfinished profit-over-product mess, but with less public outcry for some reason. Remember when BioWare made top-of-the-line single player experiences? That sure was a long time ago, and they probably never will again if people keep buying stuff like this, so I'd recommend a hardpass. To be fair, if the game under-preforms EA will kill BioWare like they do with every other company they buy, but it's not the same BioWare it was so I don't even see that as a big deal.

RIP good single player RPGs... (from AAA, at least. Play Divinity: Original Sin 2, that game is mind-boggilingly amazing).

Can you tell I wanted to rant about this stupid game?

General / Re: Opinions on the February 2019 Nintendo Direct?
« on: February 14, 2019, 05:32:11 pm »
Eh, I'd say it was mediocre to bad.

Mario Maker 2 is fun, though I really think all those features should have been in the first game to begin with.
Ports, meh. Not interesting.
Link's Awakening remake... super meh. Maybe a new 2D Zelda instead?
Fire Emblem... there is just too much Fire Emblem now, and the direction the series is going is not to my liking.
That new Platinum game seems interesting, but not the kind of game I personally care about. Same with Deamon Ex Machina.

No Pokemon, Smash, Animal Crossing, or Luigi's Mansion news... basically all the big things that are interesting. No interesting new Nintendo stuff, be it continuing series or new IP. The whole thing just failed to hype me up for Nintendo's first party stuff, but at least I am getting a slow but consistent stream of physically released indie games I want from place like LRG and SRG for the Switch.

Maybe it also didn't help for positivity watching the direct through Metokur's stream, but at least the man is honest about his opinions.

27
I'd play it, but I don't have a PS4 or Xbone... if they ever put it om Switch or PC, I guess I'll play it then.

28
Nope. You don't own digital games, they are rented to you and can be stolen from you for any reason. To me tracking digital games would be the same as tracking pirated games, they are very similar except a pirated game is worth more to you...

Can you tell I hate digital games?

General / Re: Best Sonic Game
« on: December 19, 2018, 04:05:31 pm »
Gotta go with Sonic 2. I know there is a case to be made for Sonic 3 just being a better Sonic 2, but be in nostalgia (I only actually went through a full Sonic 3 & Knuckles a couple years back, whereas Sonic 2 was one of the first games I ever played extensively) or whatever, I prefer Sonic 2's level design and simpler mechanics.

It helps that Sonic 2 has one of the most perfect soundtracks of all time.

Pat has always been kind of a slimey hypocrite.

As long as no one is physical assulting him or harassing him, calling him out for his dumbass opinion on his channel or Twitter is fine. Any defense of Diablo Immortal is basically just willingly giving up consumer power, so calling it 'entitlement' is kind of moronic. So, I totally disagree with you, and you should well know if this happens to other things in other industries it is not called 'entitlement', but quality control.
