I got my first job at Kmart in order to buy the Sega CD. It must have cost $300 at that time and I didn't work at Kmart too long, it was just during a holiday season. I imagine my pay was probably around $4/hour then too so most of the money I made must have gone to the system. There weren't many games available when I got it and full-motion video looked really cool so I bought Night Trap :-[

Possibly not worth playing now but the original Gran Turismo isn't a bad one to collect, it's certainly a classic though I have no idea on cost. Tenchu is one of my PlayStation favorites and even though I don't love fighting games, I've had a lot of fun with Tekken 3. If you like space combat sims Colony Wars is good, if a bit short.

I'm fine with Xbox and Xbox 360 but the Xbox One can burn in a..... err never mind. My main problem with Microsoft is that they take something people love and destroy it. Rare Ware comes to mind. I'm not alone on saying this but probably the best game company ever only to be bought out by Microsoft and never to make a good game again. I'm afraid that Minecraft and Mojang will suffer the same fate. Also the Xbox reputation is ruined. To most parents the name "Xbox" gets commonly associated with 360 No Scopes and Doritos. Overall it leaves a bad tastes in my mouth.

Although they have messed up developers, such as Ensemble and FASA, I think in the case of Rare the top talent simply left the company shortly after being purchased. Before they purchased Mojang, I was thinking they weren't going to bother buying developers any longer since it hadn't been working out well. It appeared as if they preferred buying timed exclusives instead. The Tomb Raider deal is one that I believe was good for all parties involved because despite sales, Square Enix still never came across as confident in the future of the series. Microsoft's money could go a long way in making that game better than it might have been and it will likely be on all platforms eventually.

I don't hate on any company but I did have some issues with the original Xbox after a few years and my 360 did get the red ring. They replaced the 360 quite quickly though and it's been fine for the past five years. Obviously Microsoft screwed up in the making of that console and many have broken, though I will add quite a few PlayStation 3s have broken as well. It's unfortunate that consoles break so often these days. I know they are much more advanced than in the past so I shouldn't compare them to cartridge-based systems, however, I will say that all of my Sega platforms still work fine  :D The only older platform that doesn't work correctly is my original Game Boy, that screen is messed up and even had some problems back when it was still relatively new.

So should there be a special thread to request company additions? It looks like I messed up here: http://vgcollect.com/item/58811. I meant to put Bethesda as the publisher, not the developer. The developer is ZeniMax Online Studios which I did not see in the database.

Classic Video Games / Re: Your favourite console, and why?
« on: January 22, 2015, 05:59:22 pm »
The Sega Genesis is my favorite though I can't say that I've played it too much in the past 20 years. Back when I was a teenager I really got into sports video games and played a ton of EA's NHL and Madden games, as well as a fair amount of NBA Live and FIFA. I don't see too many fans of sports games on these forums, perhaps because they aren't very unique or interesting to collect. I don't play too many sports games anymore, but back then I was someone that wanted the new version each year. Aside from sports games, my favorites were Golden Axe, Phantasy Star II, and Warsong. I played so much Golden Axe that I had memorized where each enemy would appear. I'm looking at my manual right now as I used to write down all of my scores in it (Sega put in three pages labeled Scorebook) and while I can't really remember how the game was scored, it looks like my top score was 390.0 as Gilius Thunderhead. I've got Strength ratings written down here too and can't recall at all what that was. That particular score was 69.0 but I did have higher strength in other games with slightly lower overall scores. The game assigned grades too; I've received as high as A+++ which I'm guessing was the best  8) I know I played that game over and over trying to perfect my scores which is not something I do these days.

I'm not too sure I can name 20 Genesis exclusives and I don't really own that many non-sports games. Unfortunately I did trade a few in for credit to get Lunar: The Silver Star on Sega CD. It's the only time I've ever traded in games and still regret it a little even if not all of them were great. A few I traded it because I got them on the Sega CD Genesis classics compilation, though I still wish I had kept the cartridges, such as Streets of Rage. During the 16-bit era I also rented a lot of games from a local video store. I remember liking Flashback but not having enough time to finish it. I did finish Gunstar Heroes and Strider. Of course I've played some Sonic the Hedgehog games too, though I've never been a big fan of platform games. Ecco the Dolphin was a unique game but I don't think I played the original on Genesis. I did try it more recently on a Genesis compilation. Speedball 2 was a favorite even though I never owned it. I've got the first one on Commodore 64 and did later pick up Speedball 2 on XBLA. The old Shinobi games are fun too. Revenge of Shinobi's ending area had all of those damn doors and forced me to check a magazine's strategy guide  :-[ Browsing the VGCollect listings quickly for some other exclusives: Moonwalker , ToeJam & Earl, and Herzog Zwei -- all games I did rent.

For now - new developers and publishers will have to be requested through the forum.

I suspect you may need to keep it that way forever. Even if you write a style guide for it there are too many people that don't read that as is evidenced by all of the game duplicates and titling errors. Whether you do open it up to users or not, you'll need to decide how detailed company names should be and whether to use publishing brands or just the parent companies. There are quite a few companies who have changed their names too, sometimes it is minor and sometimes it isn't. Do you add both or just go with one?  Then there are numerous in-house development studios that can sometimes be difficult to track. Here are some examples:

-Team17 Software Limited became Team17 Digital Limited in 2012
-Namco Hometek, Inc. became Namco Bandai Games America, Inc. in 2006, switched their name around to Bandai Namco Games America, Inc. last April, and this April they are going to change to Bandai Namco Entertainment America, Inc.
-past Sega can get a bit complicated as they went through all of the in-house developer name changes with the AM teams and then going back to some of them and then dropping them completely
-Nintendo has had a bunch of studios too, and then there is Nintendo EAD which is all I ever use in my work but it can be broken down farther

Some of us can probably keep up but I think the average user doesn't pay very close attention to company details. I assume most of the duplicates come from some people just adding a broad name to those going detailed (Sega vs. Sega of America vs. Sega of America, Inc., etc.). I usually aim for the most accurate so I'd add the corporate bits like Ltd., LLC, Inc., GmbH, etc., but I'm guessing the majority of people might not. I'm sure you know all of this though as you had to take it offline for such a long time  ;) I imagine sorting through all of the past submissions is a major pain, good luck with that  :D

I think you are part of the majority on this but people must be buying DLC since it hasn't slowed down at all. I've yet to actually purchase any DLC unless Pinball FX2 tables count as DLC but I don't think they do. I've played some that was packaged on retail game of the year editions, most recently BioShock Infinite's Burial at Sea which was actually 6-8 hours between the two parts, it was kind of a like a whole game. That's likely the exception though and most of it does appear to be quick money for the publishers. However, I can understand why they do it and if it keeps games from costing any more I can almost go along with it. I don't care about bonus costumes/skins or weapons and any kind of items, it's the extra story stuff that makes me wonder if I'm missing something. It also seems like some games simply don't end so that they can sell people DLC. I just finished Far Cry 4 yesterday and I would have liked more of a conclusion, it didn't feel like the choices I made mattered. My character lied a couple times to the leader I went along with but I didn't tell him to, he just did and as far as I know there are no consequences. Maybe there will be in DLC? I likely won't be finding out. Having played through Dragon Age: Inquisition I got to hear Morrigan mention the Grey Warden's child that I know was part of Origins' DLC that I never played so I felt like I didn't have the whole story. There were a couple of Mass Effect characters that I never met either. I know I can just read about the details online or watch youtube videos but sometimes it feels like companies hold back parts of a game intentionally.

Missing out on what I feel should have been part of a game bothers me most, though I can certainly understand your point about the future and how a game on a disc can be incomplete without the ability to download the post-launch updates. Actually, anything digital does concern me. I've got some Xbox Live credit but once I use that I don't think I'll be purchasing digital games on consoles any longer. Since they aren't backwards compatible on the newer consoles I don't know what will happen to all of my XBLA games if my 360 ever breaks. I certainly can't ever get rid of the system if I want to keep my games. I have to believe a company like Microsoft will out live me so the games will always be there to download if I have a working console, though who knows. I'll stick to digital-only games on PC going forward since I figure I'll always at least have a computer to play them on.

Video Game Database Discussion / Re: Amiibo & others listings
« on: January 21, 2015, 05:58:34 am »
Is there a reason the current amiibo listings don't include Super Smash Bros. in the title? It seems relevant since the game title is on the front of the amiibo packaging and above the character's name. I realize they can be compatible with other games but Super Smash Bros. is the primary game for the first few waves. Keeping the titles as is will create duplicate names once the Super Mario series hits in a few months though I guess you could number them, like Mario 2, Mario 3 and so on (though someone would have to keep track of that). Personally I'd put the game titles for these and for Skylanders and Disney before the character names, though I can see why you might want the character name first so that you can see how many variations exist for a single character.  On the other hand, putting a title first would make it easier to see all of the characters associated with a single game with the way the database sorts.

Although the figures just got their own section and this might be overkill, but maybe it would be best to give each type their own sub section under the toys. For example, Skylanders would be a category and Disney Infinity a separate category under Interactive Figures. I suppose it gets to be a bit much since they are broken down by region as well.

I currently have 2890 coins so I hope they add something good in February. Last year's rewards were a disappointment but then I can't complain because I get my registration codes from work. That's what really made the digital offers last year rather worthless to me though as I don't own a 3DS or Wii U. I do have a Wii but none of the gifts were for Wii. Although I don't play a lot of Nintendo games, I just like gaming in general and wanted some cool display types of items when I started using Club Nintendo. All I've managed to get the past few years are some playing cards, a soundtrack, a couple digital games, and some Kirby patches. I got the patches because I had expiring coins and there wasn't much to choose from. While they've had a few decent items for offer since I joined, I was greedy and was always waiting for something better, and I didn't know coins expired until I got that email telling me so  :P

I have always wanted to try Panzer Dragoon Saga but I can't spend money either. I'm not broke or anything but I was down last month because my mortgage escrow was way short. Houses can be a pain, though I also feel like renting is a waste  :P I'm not sure what that game goes for these days but it looks like you'll make out okay.

Modern Video Games / Re: GTA IV re-release - Would you buy it?
« on: January 08, 2015, 05:54:51 am »
I like the original game but I'd rather play something new than an upgraded version of an old game. I briefly tried the first-person mode of GTA V and didn't love it. Driving and punching in first-person is nauseating. Perhaps it does improve the game overall but I already finished it on 360 and don't need to play it again.

Not sure if Agent is still in development. If it is I'd expect they would abandon it for PS3 and put it on something else. Rockstar never removed the official Agent site (http://www.rockstargames.com/agent) but it's just a placeholder and they probably forgot about it. I wonder if anyone bought a PS3 in anticipation of that game, or The Last Guardian for that matter.

Xbox 360

Ninety-Nine Nights
Delete this recent addition: http://vgcollect.com/item/74164. Aside from being assigned to the incorrect platform it is also a duplicate. The correct entry: http://vgcollect.com/item/11441

MX vs. ATV Untamed

3DS

Doctor Lautrec and the Forgotten Knights

PlayStation Vita

Final Fantasy X/X-2 Remaster
-This one has two entries, however, two versions do exist so the box art could be considered accurate but I don't know which versions each person wants in their collection and that is probably impossible to know at this point. I'd rather not submit an edit and mess people up, though you should at least match the base titles and probably mark one as having art cards, and add the appropriate UPCs (launch version with art cards UPC: 662248914381; no art cards UPC: 662248914596).
http://vgcollect.com/item/57333
http://vgcollect.com/item/72616

Genkai Tokki Moero Chronicle
-I don't think this game is coming to the US and it already has a Japanese listing so I'd delete it.
http://vgcollect.com/item/69596

Germinator
-This is a PSN title, one listing is under that and one is in the retail listings.
http://vgcollect.com/item/49257 (retail)
http://vgcollect.com/item/58570 (PSN)

HtoL#NiQ: The Firefly Diary
-Two listings for the regular edition. Instead of deleting one you could make one the limited edition. One person has one of them in their collection but it really isn't out yet.
http://vgcollect.com/item/70073
http://vgcollect.com/item/72132

Tales from the Borderlands
-I wouldn't be surprised if this one day hits retail but I assume the retail listing was meant for PSN which already has an entry. I'm guessing the person submitted it wrong and instead of editing submitted a new one. Might want to look at the submissions from instantreplay because I think I'm submitting edits on a bunch of listings meant for PSN Vita that are his.
http://vgcollect.com/item/67672 (retail)
http://vgcollect.com/item/67673 (PSN)

The Grisaia Trilogy
-Another from instantreplay and I think in this case, as well as some others, he is jumping the gun a bit submitting games that are not official. For this one there is a Kickstarter in progress (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sekaiproject/the-grisaia-trilogy-three-huge-visual-novels-for-p) that has a stretch of goal of bringing it to Vita after PC pending Sony approval. So it's up to you if you want to leave it or delete it or do something else with it (needs a title fix if you leave it). I don't know much about it but I guess it exists in Japan, though if it comes to the US it will likely be PSN and not retail, and then they could even release the games individually rather than as a trilogy...but it's all up in the air at this point.
http://vgcollect.com/item/73782

Zen Pinball 2
-Another that is PSN only but has a retail listing as well as PSN. The earlier entry which is also the one in the incorrect location has the most data but neither has a release date. Since I don't know which one you are keeping I'll put it here: September 4, 2012.
http://vgcollect.com/item/49260 (retail)
http://vgcollect.com/item/67423 (PSN)

Sega Saturn

Atlantis: The Lost Tales
-This seems a bit strange but two people submitted the same European Saturn game a week apart.
http://vgcollect.com/item/73749
http://vgcollect.com/item/74108

PlayStation 4

PlayStation Camera
-There is one in the correct place and one with the game listings.
http://vgcollect.com/item/73933 (game listing)
http://vgcollect.com/item/73985

Dual Shock 4 Magma Red
-Same as the camera, one listed correctly and one as a game.
http://vgcollect.com/item/73245 (game listing)
http://vgcollect.com/item/73561

Xbox One

Portal 2
-I'd delete this one. Perhaps this was meant for Xbox 360 or just wishful thinking.
http://vgcollect.com/item/69333

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
-Someone put a bad second entry for one. By the way, the official spelling of Middle-earth is with a lower-case "e" for earth (it's capitalized on most of the listings).
http://vgcollect.com/item/69284
http://vgcollect.com/item/71208 (delete this one; wrong title, no data to keep, not in any collections)

Walking Dead, The: The Complete First Season
-Neither box art is perfect but the original listing has the pre-release box art that says "Game of the Year Edition" which was dropped from the title before release.
http://vgcollect.com/item/72777
http://vgcollect.com/item/73059

Strike Suit Zero: Director's Cut
-I pointed this one out back in October so it was either missed or you didn't believe me  ;) It was only released as a Director's Cut on Xbox One.

I'm not sure which are good since I've not played any but here are a few more to consider: Christmas Nights Into Dreams... (Saturn - packaged with a magazine), Jazz Jackrabbit: Holiday Hare 1995 (PC), Outlaw Golf: 9 Holes of X-Mas (Xbox - Blockbuster Exclusive), and Santa Claus Saves the Earth (GBA).

Dragon Age: Inquisition - A good 80 hours put into the game, with probably about 90% of the game complete.  Overall I very much enjoyed the experience.  It's very flawed, lots of stuff needed to be cleaned up and worked on and from what I hear in comparison to past games, it's lacking in a few areas, but I was definitely into the game.  I played as Qunari Warrior first and I might go back through the game again as an Elven Archer, using the Dragon Age Keep website for changing the story, and doing a few of the alternate story options.  Should be enough to get me another full playthrough out of that.

I finished Dragon Age: Inquisition yesterday after around 100 hours. The PC version is very buggy, took a while just to get it to work without crashing often (have to play in windowed mode). Not sure how complete I was though I did get all of the shards, rifts, landmarks, and all but one region (seems a lot of people are missing a region in Exalted Plains, could be a bug). Missed four bottles and a bunch of mosaic pieces. Also had a few missions in the War Room remaining when I decided to finish the game. I played as a male Qunari Rogue (dual blades), though due to a bug (until the last patch) every NPC thought I was female, often referring to me as she or lady. Right after I finished I did start up a new game on nightmare difficulty as a female elf mage. Not sure if nightmare will be too tough since I generally let the companions do their own thing and they can do some dumb things, especially when fighting dragons. Normal difficulty was easy though, mostly because I spent a lot of time in the first few areas so I leveled higher than most areas were designed for when I eventually got to them. I was level 24 when I finished the game.
