Video Game Database Discussion / Penguin Wars - Switch & PS4

The official release date on this game is somewhat sketchy because they've delayed it a few times so various news sites have stated differing dates. To make it more confusing the PS4 release has a different date from the Switch version so it's even easier to get them mixed up. Even retail sites also have vary on release dates.

There's been a small battle going on in our database entry for Penguin Wars (Switch). It's bounced between August 15 and 30 a couple times and I would like to present some evidence for why 15 is the correct date - at least for the Switch version. I'll start with a direct tweet from the game's publisher.

Site Feedback / BUG - Some Dates in Dropdown are written out.

When I was adding an item to my collection and I was setting that date it was purchased, I noticed that some of the dates were written out instead of being a number. The affected numbers include 10, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25.   Rendered on Chrome

Video Game Database Discussion / Reuse some Blank entries

Currently there's a bug in the system where every so often a totally blank item entry is created. We try to delete them when they get spotted but its pretty easy for them to get missed when a bunch of entries get created at the same time.

We can either delete or reuse them. If you're thinking about creating a new item feel free to edit one of these blank entries.
If you end up editing one of these into a new item please post which number you used. Here is the list of blanks:

Copy and paste URLs to duplicate database entries in this thread. Include the duplicate and the original that should it should be merged into. An administrator will review your submission, usually within a day, and then make the necessary changes.

If admins haven't cleared your post yet, feel free to modify it and add any additional duplicates you may have found in the meantime. This way we have less posts spamming up the thread.

Video Game Database Discussion / Wii Shop being Discontinued - Fill in Database

As we know Wii Shop and Wii Virtual Console is being discontinued. Before Nintendo removes these games off their official website we should try to fill in as much as we can into our database before that info is gone. Sure, some of this info can be found on other sites but Nintendo's site does have the official images which many of these third-party sites may not be hosting.

Nintendo's North American site is selling "refurbished" copies of Metroid Prime Trilogy for Wii for 15 dollars. That's cheaper than whats trending on Price Charting. Does not come with metal case or manual however.

Video Game Database Discussion / ACA NEOGEO on Nintendo Switch

Pulisher Hamster has been releasing a bunch of NeoGeo games on Switch this year under their "ACA NEOGEO" series. These games have ACA NEOGEO in the name of the product and read as such on main menu of the game system and in the online store. For example Aero Fighters 2 is labelled as ACA NEOGEO Aero Fighters 2.

Currently in our database these have been simplified to their original name, and remove ACA NeoGeo. My question is; should we continue to remove the ACA NeoGeo from the product names despite the fact that's actually what there are called in the system itself?

Classic Video Games / Favorite 16-bit soundtracks

In the 16 bit days there were so many games with memorable soundtracks. With sampling coming into play music was able to achieve new levels of fidelity. Thematic Sonic the Hedgehog. Moody Super Metroid. Epic Final Fantasies. Playful Yoshi's Island.
 
One of my new favorites I've been listening to is Gokujou Parodius, and the whole Parodius series in general. For those unfamiliar, Parodius is a parody of the Gradius series. Hence the name. Konami took their serious space shooter and heavily Japanified it. While crazy crap happens on screen there's insane/silly tracks playing that match the same level of absurdity.

Because of the incredibly fast development cycles the sound team didn't really have time to write new compositions. Some of the songs are lifted straight out of existing Konami games, but most of the tracks are these incredibly pumped up rearrangements of public domain classical music and Japanese folk. They took all these familiar songs and turned them on their head. While almost none of the music is original per se, it's still entertaining.

General / Most American Videogame ?

On this 4th of July I ask: what is the most 'Merican videogame ever made?


For me it has to be Duke Nukem. No one else embodies the American spirit like he does. Loves guns and scantily dressed women. What he lacks in smarts, he makes up for with balls and a "can-do" attitude.

Is there another character or game that can take the spot the most American? Happy fourth of July!
