Anyone else tend to post random blurbs in here, thinking this was the "general" thread? I do that a lot.

Currently playing? Rayman for PS1 mostly.

Rayman on the PS1. Man, that game is sadistically hard. So many cruel beginners traps, and overall ruthless level designs. It's a fun game, but damn is it frustrating and intentionally so.

Nice. Since I picked up Astal this past weekend, I've been back in the mood to continue my Saturn collection.

I really want to play Secret of Mana first, but Earthbound is so expensive, who knows when I'd get a copy to play for myself!  :'( Granted, SoM isn't exactly cheap either...

I've already played Chrono Trigger, FFIII and LttP

I've decided at this point I'm gonna cheat and buy Earthbound Uncut. It's so much more affordable, plus you get the game more in the form that it should have been.

There's plenty of games in the sea.

I bet there is. Somewhere, there are games underwater.

Retro con finds from today, all stuff I've wanted for a long time. Especially Ninja Crusaders, and Mr. Nutz!

My other August goodies.

In a Darkest Hour kick right now. I'm not exactly a metalhead, but I always thought this band was really underrated / overlooked.

I can't remember that clearly, but I want to say either Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 2, Bubble Bobble, Snow Brothers, or Monster Truck Rally. Maybe even Face Ball 2000, Super Mario World, or Gradius III. It's really fuzzy at this point. These are just the first ones I remember.

It's okay, depending how they dress the packaging. PS2 is admittedly bland, Game Cube as well, but I liked Xbox's black on green pretty well, and also liked the neon theme of 360, and I somewhat like the blue cases Wii U games come in. I thought it was a nice touch how Xbox One games actually have Xbox One embossed on the plastic, but the case itself is a bit puny. I thought there was a fair amount of last gen games with cool cover artwork, not so much this gen. I was at the store the other day looking at PS4 games and I swear there were like 5 games that had nearly black and white covers that all looked very similar - Bloodborn, The Order, Dragon Age, Mortal Kombat, Godzilla, Arkham Knight... bland, colorless and boring.

I'd agree that packaging hasn't been all that spectacular since N64, Saturn, and early PS1. The worst packaging, however, was the use of the standard CD jewel case, it just never did games justice IMO.

Regardless of what it is, it seems like Nintendo is brewing up yet another "innovative" piece of hardware that developers aren't going to touch with a pole that has at least ten feet to spare on it. What else is new.

Going to another gaming con Saturday. Hope I can come away with some goodies. I like to go without expectations, or any wishlist and just see what I happen to find at the right price.

Modern Video Games / Re: Fatal Frame V
« on: August 26, 2015, 09:44:13 pm »
It's scary how we're all fretting how Fatal Frame is getting no physical release when, as of now, the NX has no disc drive. Granted, the system may have cart games, but what if it doesn't? Will the reaction be the same? My guess is yes.

This is just the beginning of the end for physical games. When you think about it, most games now don't come in physical form. Only well established franchises and developers are still doing it, but of those, most of the games are also available as a download. Doubt that any next gen console will have a disk drive. Technology has triggered cannibalization in many industries, like games, and will continue to do so until fraction of what once was is left.

Gaming companies seem really, really eager to cut production of physical games out. They want you to think it's because they've become irrelevant, but it's not true. What's sad is customers having to beg companies to still produce physical copies. It's the opposite of what they'd have you believe, people still want it, they just don't want to invest in it anymore because there's a cheaper alternative for them as a company now.

Classic Video Games / Re: What do you prefer retro or modern games?
« on: August 25, 2015, 03:38:53 pm »
I prefer classic. Retro is something new that is like the old.  ;D

But old school for a multitude of reasons. I'm pretty disgusted with the current state of gaming, I'm old (at heart), and I'm not adapting. I grew up playing games that were very different. No internet, now downloads, no DLC, no HDD, no cinematic nonsense, no games are art, no frills. Just gaming in it's purest form.

I do like 6th gen, and even 7th somewhat. But stuff is changing, games are outgrowing me, enthusiasm is waning. That's why I'm not picking up any more new consoles. There's enough gaming history for a lifetime. I prefer the classics.

Wii U is already my last Nintendo console. I feel completely burned by it. Yeah, there are fun games on it. But it's nearly been a year since I've bought anything for my Wii U. In the meantime, I'm watching all kinds of awesome stuff coming out on Xbox One and PS4.

For curiosity's sake, what is some awesome stuff that came out on Xbox or PS4? I haven't seen a single game I couldn't' live without come to these platforms. Well, not one that I couldn't just get for PC instead.
