Nothing worth getting up for this year... maybe Mario Kart 8. The question is, is Mario Kart 8 really worth experiencing humanity at it's worst again this year? Probably not.

People are still beginning? Seriously? I feel sorry for them. Never been a worse time.

Pretty much.

As some have said, collecting 6th and 7th gen stuff is quite easy and affordable for the most part, but even games from these gens are harder to find than they normally would because game collecting is huge in general. More and more people are holding onto games rather then selling them, making them harder to find and more valuable as a result. But yeah, if someone wanted to get into 16-bit collecting, or hell even collecting for the PS1 or N64, they'd have to have some deep pockets.

Yep. My thoughts go directly to the number of good games that already are not "easy" to find or inexpensive anymore from the 6th gen, because I remember a time when pretty much all of them were. Classic or modern doesn't seem to matter as much now, it's all fair game. You go to GameStop and some of the more collectable 7th gen games are hard to come by there too.

Tales of Hearts R... because screw letting another Xenoblade happen. I was even given someone's pre-order. :-X But only because they were supposed to have 2 in stock.  ;)

I don't think this will happen for one reason, it's a handheld. Handheld games, even really rare ones rarely fetch the kind of money they would if they were on a console. Still, I can see it maintaining its value for a while.

That.

Plus, it's also available digitally.

It still contains the recipe of being mostly a collector's item among physical games. Niche title, unpopular platform, and low print run. :D Although, I will give you that handheld holds less value in the collecting world, typically. I'm trying to think of a handheld game that now exceeds retail value.

I'd definitely starve first. Ramen noodles are what? 40 cents a pack? ;) To me, while game hunting is fun and all, it's not something I'd want to do again. I consider finding a home, a car, and food, much easier than building a large and diverse game collection. Worse comes to worse, apply at McDonald's and fall back on family for refuge until you can get your self straight again, and take your game collection with you. To me it's not worth a quick sell so that I can tie ends together and stay afloat long enough to get back on track and then have no games.

I'd say 90% of the games I have came from real world hunting, and not eBay. But if I was forced to start over, about 90% would need to come from eBay because of how much it's dried up in the small town area I live in. So that makes it much more difficult, what took me 6 years would probably take another 10, and probably thousands more in spending than the first time around. I just wouldn't do it again at this point.

None, really. There was probably a phase where some games had already been rated under that categorization, and released later rather than sooner, than others with the new rating. I'm not sure why they insisted on the change. I liked the K-A rating better, because it emphasized that adults should enjoy it too. Nowadays, many people dismiss E rated games, assuming they are created solely in the interest of children, like most G rated movies tend to be.

I think some people collect them. But aside from that, I think people do have an interest in them. They sell frequently online.

Classic Video Games / Re: Rare PS2/XBOX standard release games?
« on: November 07, 2014, 12:17:33 pm »

Mind you these are genuinely rare, not just valuable. A lot of people seem to confound the words "rare" and "valuable" i've noticed.
PS2

Winback 2
Rule of Rose
Blood Will Tell
.Hack GU trilogy
Arcana Heart
Castle Shikigami 2
Disaster Report
Echo Night Beyond
Eternal Poison
Forever Kingdom
Ghost Hunter
Growlanser Generation Deluxe Edition
Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus
Gundam Battle Assault 3
Jurassic Park Operation Genesis
Kuon
Lifeline
Monster Hunter
Monster Rancher 4
MS Saga: New Dawn
Robot Alchemic Drive
Rez
Shining Tears
Stretch Panic
Trapt
Virtual On Marz
Yakuza 2

XBOX
Call of Cthulu
Digimon Rumble Arena 2
Jurassic Park Operation Genesis
Land of the Dead
Outrun 2006
Sniper Elite
Sneakers
Steel Battalion
Steel Battalion Line of Contact
Syberia 2
Xyanide
Samurai Showdown V

I would agree with most of these, because in my days of hunting I've only seen each maybe once, or twice. In some cases not never. However, Rez and Stretch Panic stand out to me as two games that I've seen quite a bit of for whatever reason. I've not once seen Trapt, Blood Will Tell, or Forever Kingdom in person.

It's hard to say, there are probably plenty I've only ever seen once. For PS2 I'd say Tsugunai, because I never found that game in the wild, had to order it. Can't say I've ever seen Dual Hearts in person before either, or Under The Sun. Metal Saga seems like another one.

For Xbox it would be harder for me to add anything, because a lot of the games I've bought, I never saw again in the wild. Conker comes to mind, took me 5 years to ever see another copy after I passed up on one! Maybe Curse: The Eye of Isis, or Dreamfall: The Longest Journey? Also, can't say I've ever seen Stubz The Zombie in person before.

My wife and I were talking about something like this last night.  We were in local game store and they were telling about the box of NES stuff someone brought in.  It was the box my Godzilla 2 came out of  8)

Anyway, the dude only wanted $50 for something like 30 games and an NES.  They gave him his full asking price.  Mega Man 1-3 were in there, Godzilla 2, and Contra were all in this $50 box.

Sounds like a pretty crappy thing for a game store to do, with the whole giving the guy a fraction of the value of his stuff and not even telling him he's got a couple of games in it worth what he's asking alone. I bet they then priced each of the games according to eBay value? Maybe plus some on top?

I'm sure a lot of "game stores" do this, but I think it's really crappy for them to do. I know our local retro store will do this to anyone, even regular customers who they know can't be taken.

If the dude wanted $50, I have no problem with them only giving him $50 for it.  I bought Panic Restaurant for $5.  There was no way in hell I was going to go up to the counter and demand that they take $250 for it.
They didn't rip the dude off.  He got 100% of what he was asking.  It's the same as people I buy games from.  I have no problem giving people a fraction of what things are worth.
It's up to both parties to be educated about the product.  I'm not going to hold a seller's hand to help them make money.  I'm not going to steal from them, but giving someone way more than what they're asking is just dumb.

I just think it's different if you run a legit business. Ever seen Pawn Stars? Even those guys tell people when their items are worth way more than what they are wanting, and of course they're in the business of making money too.

In the case you describe above the buyer is a game store, so supposedly they are educated in the value of what they deal in or at least know to look into what the value is and make offers accordingly. It's not like Good Will where the manager isn't interested or doesn't care about the market value of donated items, or a yard sale where a bunch of random stuff just needs to be sold and done with. But it sounds like the guy just glanced in the box, saw valuable stuff, and said "sure buddy!". That's kind of crappy. Again, wouldn't be crappy in any other instance of buying or selling, other than a legitimate games store, IMO. I just think in that case, it's a bit more unethical.  ???

Most people who bring games to these places go in with a bunch and ask "what will you give me for these?", in which case the store owner must respond with a straight face and try not to insult the person with a lowball. If someone brings in a NWC official cart and says "can I please get $10 for this?", and store owner gives them $10, that's pretty lousy of them.

To me as long as it's the official CD, it doesn't matter.

I know they make DVD resealable baggies, and I think they might do it also for CDs, but not any hard cases that I know of.

I couldn't number them... but as far as what is on my mind a lot lately, it's always changing, gradually coming into consciousness and then subsiding slowly, currently - Bayonetta 2, Fairy Fencer F, Ar nosurge, Trapt, Crimsons Tears, Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow, A Witch's Tale, Castlevania III, Arc Rise Fantasia, and the Danganronpa games for Vita.

I hate thinking about which games I really want the most in the present moment, because I know I don't want to just spend whatever it is for them. That's just not usually how I operate, but the thoughts are always there. "Come on already! Just buy this game! You need it now!"  ::)

Did this game go up a lot in the past few years? I remember it being worth about $25 several years ago. But everything SNES has tripled.

Unless you're a fan of the series, I'd pass. If you are and it's the last one you need, then sure go for it. Tbh, I don't see that one much, even when I go to game stores. It's not rare, but I still think the chances of finding it in a thrift pile is fairly slim these days.

I'll just point out that no financial emergency would make me sell. It's bankruptcy before selling games. No, seriously. ???

But if someone had a gun pulled and said I must do it or else.

I'd have the hardest time selling my DS, PS2, and XBOX collections as a whole, I should say NES too because I've been working really hard on that one this year. Also quite a few of the individual games I had as a kid on various platforms. Would also suck to have to part with my Vectrex, just because I think it's one of the cooler things I've found since I've been on the hunt, and a bit sentimental in that regard.

It would pain me to get rid of anything, well mostly - I could probably part with my Jaguar and it's handful of games and only be slightly annoyed, but the above mentioned would hurt a lot. If it ever actually happened, I'd be done for good. :-\
